12/12/2005: My nephew’s letter to Santa…

Advent & Advert Calendars are up to date. I’ll be back tomorrow afternoon with news on the holiday junk food everyone must go out and buy immediately. So get clairvoyant and try to figure out what I’m talking about before tomorrow afternoon, otherwise you’ll fail at buying it immediately. Meantime, click “more” to see my nephew’s letter to Santa Claus, and I swear to God he wrote it. I could not possibly write something this awesome myself…

That letter is awesome. The dichotomy between a good and bad xmas tree is just great.

Plus a double dose of new advent calendar goodness.

Christmas is DEFINITELY on its way!

Wow, maybe we’d buy more presents for Matt from his Amazon wishlist if he wrote his requests as cute as his nephew’s letter.

Ghosted by Carri @ 12/12/2005 12:15 PM EST

Just something really strange to notice… I finally got a "first post" and it’s 12/12 at exactly 12:12.

Weird.

Ghosted by Mr. Boligarky @ 12/12/2005 12:19 PM EST

Mr. Boligarky Congrats, you got the patented 12:12 First Post Christmas Miracle while I got stuck with its meaningless bastard sister, the 12:15 Second Post.

Hey, when do we start counting down the 12 days of Christmas? The 13th or the 14th?

Ghosted by Carri @ 12/12/2005 12:33 PM EST

When I was about seven years old, I wrote a letter like that. Every freakin’ year it comes back to haunt me. My family loves recollecting how cute I used to be and then pondering what happened. Grrrr…I hate being the youngest child.

Carri, the Twelve Days of Christmas start on Christmas Day and last until the Epiphany, when the Three Wise Men came. On the modern liturgical calander, it isn’t always exactly twelve days though because we always celebrate the Epiphany on a Sunday.

Wow…I listen way to much at church.

Ghosted by Karen @ 12/12/2005 12:42 PM EST

I am pretty sure we start counting ON the 25th itself, and go until January 5th.

Actually, I just looked it up, click on my name to see some church-y explanation of when the 3 Kings/Wise Men/Magi/dudes-with-the-presents get to Jesus.

WARNING!!!

DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GET THIS BOY BURNOUT LEGENDS ON THE DS!! IT IS A HORRID PORT OF THE PSP VERSION. SINCE HE WANTS PSP GAMES, MOVE IT TO BURNOUT LEGENDS FOR PSP. FOR THE LUVVA GOD! THE DS VERSION SCORES 3.0 OR LESS ON MOST REVIEWS!

WHERE MY CAPS BUT-oh there it is. Sorry. The PSP version is great BTW. For my Christmas list, I want Guitar Hero for the PS2, the 2 DVD behind the scenes of King Kong journal, and Godzilla: Final Wars on DVD AND PSP. (It’s an awesome movie.)

Ghosted by Jason @ 12/12/2005 12:45 PM EST

Looks like Karen beat me to the explanation. So click on my name THIS time to see more about the first christmas presents.

Your nephews have better hand writing than me. But so does the Pope, not the one they have now the one that’s dead.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 12/12/2005 1:05 AM EST

Wow, and I thought I liked video games.

Ghosted by Jeff @ 12/12/2005 1:08 AM EST

Awesome once again!

I bet Nick REALLY doesn’t know much about Beavis & butthead, and that there’s more eps and stuff on the DVD versions. I like his drawing of himself with the "ME" and arrow pointing to him. Matt shold have a sign like that, it justs reads "MATT!" and it’s an arrow pointing at him.

And in Advent #11, isn’t that supposed to be Storm Shadow and not Snake Eyes with Viper?

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 12/12/2005 1:11 AM EST

Oops, fixed. :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 12/12/2005 1:12 AM EST

I still have misprinted Snake Eyes window up, you think it’ll appreciate in value or should I just reload?

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 12/12/2005 1:15 AM EST

That window’s a bitch to keep in decent shape.

Ghosted by Matt @ 12/12/2005 1:15 AM EST

Aw that’s cute. My mom saved like all the shit I made in school and stuff up until I graduated. They’re all in a big box in the garage. I should go see if there’s any old stray Xmas lists. I remember I sent a letter to Jim Davis once with a picture I drew of Garfield lighting Nermal on fire. He wrote back, too, I still have the letter and autograph and everything.

BTW – After looking at your wishlist I signed onto Amazon and my front page recommended me some book called, "Why Do Men Have Nipples?" because I looked at that Dr Pepper beefy jerky. o.O

Ghosted by Mystie @ 12/12/2005 1:19 AM EST

DS is better than PSP; everybody knows that. Er….the educated do, that is. Might want to take your nephew for a walk and explain that movies and watered-down PS2 games don’t equal fun. The PSP doesn’t deliver anything you can’t just get on a much larger screen for half the price. The DS takes full advantage of the handheld format with things like a touch screen and tilt controls–things that would only work on a handheld.

He should wait to get a PSP until Valkyrie Profile comes out for it; then there’ll be a valid reason to own one.

Ghosted by Mars @ 12/12/2005 1:23 AM EST

Oh……he’s already got a DS. Never mind. The pic hadn’t finished loading.

But he actually wants "Kicking and Screaming" starring Will Ferrell for both DVD AND PSP!! He needs a freakin’ whipping now!

Ghosted by Mars @ 12/12/2005 1:26 AM EST

Oh for cute! How old is the lad?
Is Mare having pangs of conscience? The "reunion" shall be interesting.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 12/12/2005 1:33 AM EST

Oh no! Please don’t start ranting about if DS or PSP is the best system. They’re both good. Well, I haven’t played the PSP myself, and the people I know who own it don’t like it, but I’m sure there are some redeaming qualaties to it. . .

Ghosted by Crassadon @ 12/12/2005 1:38 AM EST

I remember going through Sears Wishbook and listing everything I’d want. I remember the complete excitment that I could potentially get ANYTHING… How I miss when Christmas was magical…

Ghosted by Jeff Mack @ 12/12/2005 1:41 AM EST

haha your nephew ROCKS! I am not joking!

p.s. when are you going to review the Jones regional pack?

Ghosted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 12/12/2005 1:43 AM EST

I don’t like handhelds at all! TAKE THAT!

Ghosted by FangsFirst @ 12/12/2005 1:44 AM EST

Plus..
The bar on X-E still says "Today on X-E: Christmas is dead…forever! Engulf yourself in Kool-Aid and Cereal madness!"

I think, though I know from past experience it’s moot and won’t be changed until it’s thanksgiving again anyway, that this is out of date.

I could be wrong, though.

Ghosted by FangsFirst @ 12/12/2005 1:51 AM EST

Get the kid Animal Crossing. Oh Animal Crossing! I count the days till I’m home from college when I can hold you in my hands once more…

Ghosted by Knitter @ 12/12/2005 2:47 AM EST

Matt,
The movie Flash Gordon was on TV today, and all I could think was YOU HAVE TO REVIEW THIS MOVIE. Considering the entire soundtrack is by Queen, I don’t know how anyone could resist watching it multiple times.

Also, I saw Christmas Crunch (though slightly insulted it was on the bottom shelf underneath non-holiday themed cereals) and about 500 varieties of Christmas cookies at the store today. It was enough to make me all warm and tingly inside =)

Christmas calenders rock, as always. Keep it up!!

Ghosted by flygrl358 @ 12/12/2005 3:46 AM EST

Those drawings make that letter awesome. SANTA RULEZ!

I used to write letters like that, but it was to the "official" North Pole address. I remember writing two, but getting back the same generic "I’ll see what I can do" letter. That was sort of disheartening, but Santa’s still good people.

Ghosted by Dr. Acula @ 12/12/2005 3:52 AM EST

Uhh Matt? You DO know the instructions for the Lego Advent Calendar are on the inside flap of each present right?

Because you seem to be assembling the bits slightly off kilter and its disturbing me for some stupid reason. (Stupid for many reasons, the fact its Lego and one can really do what one wants with them being the largest.)

I’m enjoying your take on things though. Mine are all lined up on top of my CD Boom Box (Sony brand so the CD skips at any volume above 1/2 of course. Oh Sony, can’t you make any consumer electronics that DON’T break down?) in order. After the new year they get to be in my comic project. Cept I am a Mac user now (a whole whopping WEEK now. Was my Xmas present to myself.), and will be using a comic maker program called Comic Life to rock out the toy madness.

Ok, its an excuse to buy Legos, but so be it.

Ghosted by Bloodcat @ 12/12/2005 5:11 AM EST

I think we have a new Greatest Advent Character ever.

And Bob be thy name.

Ghosted by mtrox @ 12/12/2005 6:44 AM EST

I never wrote a letter to Santa. But that letter makes me want to right now. Awesome. Love where the story is headed. Mare looking out the window made me think of her singing that song from Fifel Goes West… You know "Somewhere, Out there"… That one. Good stuff!

Ghosted by Mattman @ 12/12/2005 7:47 AM EST

I think ‘I’ was a pretty good boy, too.

Today’s Story Of Suck:
I plan to buy a friend a present. [For the sake of being specific, it's a Sonokong Beast Wars Neo Longrack vs. Guiledart set] It’s up for auction, right, and it’s gone around a couple times, so I know I can get it cheap. Lo and behold, I forget to bid, and the auction’s relisted before I can ask for a fixed price offer. So I ask the seller for a buynow price on the new one, explaining that I missed the earlier one and it’s for a friend’s christmas present. What does he do, but put one on for two and a half times the price I could’ve had it for an hour earlier. Gaah.

‘Tis the season to be greedy..

Ghosted by onslaught86 @ 12/12/2005 8:00 AM EST

Greatest letter… ever.

Ghosted by Double G @ 12/12/2005 9:04 AM EST

I like your nephews take on the letter to santa, a list and a letter; the letter summing up his most wanted gifts. When I wrote santa letters it was Dear santa, how ya doing, heres my list. . .

I like the Santa Rulez picture. That is a lot of stars.

Ghosted by Geoffinsanity @ 12/12/2005 9:22 AM EST

I’d really like to see the Stetson Cologne commercial (the sleigh ride through the park)… I can’t seem to find it online

that was out of the blue sorry

Ghosted by TayTay @ 12/12/2005 9:28 AM EST

Your nephew is awesome. Every christmas I wanted a ton of stuff, too. I feel old because when I look at his list my first thought is that it’s like $1,000 worth of stuff.

The storyline on the advent calendar is quite suspenseful!

Ghosted by Jimbalaya @ 12/12/2005 9:51 AM EST

Hey. Little off-topic tidbit for all of you who appreciate the Yule Log.

If you have Windows XP and the latest version of Windows Media Player, you can download a WMP Bonus Pack from Microsoft.com that’ll give you your very own Yule Log visualization.

Gamer from waaay back here… I have both the DS and PSP. The PSP is more powerful and has a beautiful, huge screen on it. Unfortunately the games arent there for it yet. Lumines and Ridge Racer are the best of the crop. The DS has no analog whatsoever and the touchscreen looks like vaseline smeared crap, but the best games are there. Metroid Pinball, Sonic Rush, Castlevania, Animal Crossing, Meteos, Kirby Canvas Curse, Mario & Luigi… all great games. I’m not really partial to either system, they both have their pros and cons.

All the Mario sports games on the GC suck too except for Tennis.

after reading that letter, i officially have the christmas spirit again.. – thank you nick.. you’re my savior..

Ghosted by Review the World @ 12/12/2005 10:57 AM EST

I’m not a gamer, and hand-helds give me a headache. :p

Your nephew does do a great list, Matt. Makes me wish my nephew was old enough to write a letter to Santa. Oh, well, another couple of years, and he’ll be asking for video games and DVDs up the wazoo, too…

Ok, the whole thing with the fruitcake was fairly pointless but cute. Couldn’t stomach the cake, so you fed it to the toys, huh Matt? ;)

Today’s is far more interesting. Could our favorite stormtroopes and not-so-angelic Mare be heading for a reunion?

Ghosted by starwenn @ 12/12/2005 10:59 AM EST

Cute letter. My son asked Santa for a fish and a bowl of water this year. I think I can handle that one.

Ghosted by kb @ 12/12/2005 11:11 AM EST

Oh Boy, this year is going to be a doozy. I like th fact that all of Matt’s characters share the same world…

I think Mista Snowman shit in the cake…it wouldn’t surprise me, it just wouldn’t….

Wow, pretty girl just walked into my office…I’ll be right back….

Ghosted by Galvatron @ 12/12/2005 11:15 AM EST

Matt, will there be a new Christmas jukebox this year?

Ghosted by yikes @ 12/12/2005 11:42 AM EST

Is it just me, or does "Books" on Nick’s list look like it was added afterwards to appease an adult?

Ghosted by mags @ 12/12/2005 12:04 PM EST

Great letter the kid has. When our local newpaper prints the "Kids Letters to Santa" things, I like to read them out loud. They get printed verbatim and it’s fun to see what kind of mutant spelling crops up. A couple of years ago, a whole first grade class kept asking for a "pupy ples" and it became our catch phrase that X-Mas. I’ll keep you posted if any new words get added to my seasonal vacabulary this year.

Ghosted by kingklash @ 12/12/2005 12:19 PM EST

I noticed that too, mags.

This letter makes me miss the days when I could just go hogwild asking for crap instead of having to come up with a wishlist that only includes things my family can afford.

On the upside, I just remembered I’m getting the Beatles blue greatest hits 2-CD set (I have the red one already). I know because my boyfriend bought it in front of me so he’d get the right thing. And I think I’m getting DDR Mario Mix because my mom mentioned a gift that’s too big to wrap, and that game comes in a collassal box. I don’t think I spelled collassal right.

Kittycatgirl:
"and the touchscreen looks like vaseline smeared crap"

You’re not supposed to replace the stylus with an icepick. It says so in the manual! Seriously, my wife and I got a DS at launch, it’s seen regular use over the past year, and the touchscreen is a crystal clear as the first time we fired it up. As an aside, our PSP hasn’t seen nearly as much playtime as the DS. It’s like everyone else is saying: the games just arent’t there. Tokobot looks pretty neat, but it’s supposedly very short, so I suppose it will be a rental.

Ghosted by ZiZak @ 12/12/2005 12:31 PM EST

Colossal. That looks better.

Ghosted by jazzy @ 12/12/2005 12:32 PM EST

*after reading previous post*

I’m not drunk, I swear. Ignore my typos, please.

Matt, I’m lovin’ the Advent so very much right now. I had a dream about you this weekend…I don’t remember what it was about, just that I was dreaming and you were in it. Weird. My X-E withdrawal on the weekends catching up with me, I guess. Damn my busted computer.

I watched the Charlie Brown Dog for X-Mas special…I thought it was cute, but I was REALLY annoyed the poor kid didn’t get a dog! Sure, hanging out with Spike for a little while would be cool, but dammit just give the kid a dog. This is why I can’t have kids. We’d have a zoo by the time they’re 8 because I can’t say no to fuzzy aminals.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend! Oh, and the Grinch is apparently on tonight on Comedy Central at 8pm EST…apparently, it’s getting a lot of play there this year, and it was on somewhere else already because I’ve seen it once so far. It’s still my favorite special, hands-down.

Ghosted by Nicole @ 12/12/2005 12:37 PM EST

Anybody here who owns a DS, you NEED Mario Kart DS. It’s the best game in the Mario Kart series by far. Matt, make sure that kid gets Mario Kart DS for Christmas. :)

Ghosted by LuigiHann @ 12/12/2005 12:41 PM EST

Although my infatuation is clearly not as strong as Nicole’s (you’re not in my dreams or anything), i think the reason your nephew is so cool is because he has such an awesome uncle. If you ever decide to have kids, they are gonna have so much fun!

And I loved the fruitcake bit. And the "rebound" comment.
