11/27/2005: A 2 A.
As you can see, we’re gearing up for this year’s Advent & Advert Calendar features. (Thanks to Brian for working on the design, even though he’s a miserable Kraut and I hate hate hate him.) For those who don’t know, I LOVE CHRISTMAS and intend to ostracize everyone who doesn’t celebrate it by writing about it over and over and over again, or until I get drained in late December. This year, we’re doing things a little bit differently. Okay, I admit it: We’re doing things more simply, because I want to make sure I don’t overextend myself and hit a point where you come here and find NO CHRISTMAS PRESENTS!
In other words, for X-E’s 2005 Christmas season, I’ve decided to keep everything located here, on the blorgh. The decision was pretty easy, since the holidays have become a busy and generally good time for the blog — lots of lurkers come out of the virtual woodwork to contribute, and because of all of the many wonderful holiday-themed items I seem to pick up by the minute, there are usually more new posts during December than during any other month on the site. So, let’s make this place one big ol’ month-long holiday bash!
The blog will be homebase for this year’s Advent and Advert Calendars, and if you don’t know what those are, I guess you haven’t been reading the site very long.

I am figuratively pissing myself in anticipation for the advent/advert excitement. Love the new design.

Chestnuts roasting, stockings hanging from the chimney with care, multi-colored lights, the smell of pine, eggnog, fruitcake. But it just wouldn’t be Christmas without X-E and the merry master himself: sir matt.

Matt: I just want to let you know that the XE Advent Calendar with MAre and all her chums was the main thing that made me feel ‘Christmas-y’ while in Korea last year. It was hard to get in the spirit since I was away from all my family, friends and Xmas traditions (not to mention the fact that there was no snow!) and so I really appreciated having XE to visit while I was there. It was great to come online and celebrate Xmas with like-minded people every day of the month. Thanks Matt, for all you do.

Y’know…I’m one of those people who loves EVERYTHING about Christmas except any and all religious aspects of it. I’m a person of absolutely ZERO religious faith, yet I’m totally enamored with Christmas and all of it’s superficial trappings. When it comes to Christmas, my "holy trinity" consists of Jimmy Stewart, Bing Crosby and Perry Como. I guess that I’m a "poser" from a certain point of view, but it’s so much easier and more pleasant to spend a half hour watching a Charlie Brown special on TV than it is to spend ninety minutes in church hearing about why I’m going to hell.

Wouldn’t you know it - I just finished going through the Halloween Countdown. This year, instead of suffering the torments of actually ‘waiting’ for Halloween Countdown updates, I decided to read through ‘em all once the excitement was over. Days of X-E related fun, yaay! For someone whose country only celebrates Halloween in the tacky, surface level "Look, themed crap" way, X-E’s really helped me get a feel for it. I was absolutely disgusted when there wasn’t a single horror movie on. New Zealand television, you have let me down. And now, the best part of the year: Christmas. I’ve struggled with the Christmas spirit since I started choosing and, occasionally, buying all my own presents years back, but the Advent Calendar’s become as much a part of the tradition as poking the presents to see which relative gave you socks. Matt, I thank you kindly for passing on your holiday enthusiasm to so many others. I’ll be having me some o’ dat. *yoink*

I was at Best Buy at 5am on Friday. Cut half the line, as is becoming my trademark, and had to walk around the store with a huge-@$$ TV on a cart because of my lazy relatives.
Here’s the Take:
American Idiot (Import edition w/ VCD of Holiday and Blvd. of Broken Dreams. Who the hell makes VCDs anymore??)
Bullet in a Bible (for a friend)
Devil’s Rejects (for a friend)
Bowling For Soup Goes to the Movies
A Hangover You Don’t Deserve Dual Disc version
Fall Out Boy–My Heart Will Always Be the B-side to My Tongue
Bram Stoker’s Dracula Superbit version–I swear these look better than the originals.
Path of Neo Strategy Guide–Yeah, I’ve already beaten it, but it certainly helped me get those last few briefcases
PS2 Remote Control–works like a charm.
I was out of there by 7:30. I revel in being there every year. They used to run the lines through the cds and you could look at them the whole time, but being wrapped around isn’t soooo bad. And I sliced my thumb open trying to get that damn TV in my car. And the kicker? It didn’t fit, had to pick it up later.
But, I made like 15 bucks. Reward Zone people, reward zone!!

Like many others I can’t wait for the calendar. I can’t wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. . .sorry.
Also, yesterday I went to best buy ( the crappy one, with small aisles, not the nice one with the huge aisles), and I picked up Disney’s holiday classic Vol. 9, with pluto’s tree and mickey’s christmas carol. Also, for 2 for 20 I picked up, its a wonderful life and Christmas vacation.
Thanks, Matt. I just got back from the worst Thanksgiving on record, including thrilling elements such as severe illness, moving my sister into her new house despite said severe illness, having some of my sister’s furniture blow off the trailer, worrying myself even sicker over grad school and finding a new apartment and having absolutely no money and a shaky job sitution, being bitten by a dog, taking care of another dog who was, himself, pretty tore up by a third dog, and generally getting my first-ever taste of the infamous "holiday depression." Oh, and also, yesterday we got to spend an hour with the coolest snowfall I’ve ever seen, with big wet flakes. When we got home? Seventy fuggin degrees. So I was bah-humbuggin with the worst of ‘em last night.
But then this morning, I crawl grudgingly out of bed, brew the first cup of coffee I’ve had in a week (my parents switched to decaf some time ago, and don’t even keep any real stuff in their house) and fired up the computer for the first taste of Internet I’ve had in a week, and what do I find? A parade review and the intriguing framework of the new advent calendars. Blam. Syringe of holiday cheer straight to the heart, complete with decisive downward stabbing motion. So now I’ve fired up my Transiberian CD, put on my cozy green-and-red holiday socks, cranked up the AC so I can pretend it’s seasonal outside, and am making a list for my Christmas shopping foray, scheduled for later this morning.
So thank you for saving Christmas, Matt. Rock rock on. Giles.

Don’t know if you’re interested, Matt, but a friend of mine has an original copy of a Muppet Christmas special from way back in the 80’s. I’m not sure to what year, but it’s loaded with all the commercials and everything. *uncontrollable bouncing* YAY! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I am so terribly, terribly excited to see the calendars up there. I really freakin’ need to get my damn computer fixed.
Is it bad that it’s not even December yet and I have over half my Christmas shopping done? I’ve done everything so far online this year, a first for me. I’m seriously considering doing it all online, so I can save all that mall-crawling energy for the after-Christmas sales to stock up for next year at the new apt.
The boyfriend comes up for our Christmas celebration this weekend…it’s the only weekend in Dec. he could get off work. So I totally score probably the only good presents I’ll get this year almost a month early. Woot.

I am very excited about the impending Advent/Advert calendars. They will help make up for what I learned this Thanksgiving: My parents suggested having a more "low key" Christmas this year. Here, "low key" means "fewer presents."
It’s not the lack of presents that upsets me, it’s the implicit signal that I’m getting older (27 now, youngest sibling 22). It’s OK, though, as I really have everything I want from life already. (Sigh)

Will somebody please tell Lee Scott that Christmas decorations being sold in September is just plain retarted! (That’s the CEO of Wal-Mart by the way - you guys probably consider him one of the 3 Wise Men of Commercialism Christmas.) Two local radio stations two weeks ago went into all-Christmas formats. I cannot take it - as Regis would say, Christmas in America is "out of control!" Hey Yeti, why don’t you write your local congressman and see if the supreme court, when they remove "In God We Trust" from our currency could outlaw Christmas and instead opt for the term Commercial-mas. Most of America thinks like you anyway and is only in it for the Charlie Brown Christmas tree, the $89.95 portable DVD player at Kohl’s and the never ending whipping of 50 year old holiday/winter music by strange old dead white men with names like Burl and Bing.

Hi folks. I’ve been reading X-E and combing its archives for perhaps four months, and I’ve managed never to hear of the Advent/Advert calendars. However, I think I have a pretty good idea of how things work.
My big pre-Christmas present to myself is a whole case of impossible-to-find Hershey’s Krackel bars, which I bought on the Internet. I have a passion for these bars that clearly goes beyond the level of sanity, and X-E’s inspired me to write a 3,000 word "funny" article about it that probably no one will read.
By the way, Matt, if you’re reading this, I want you to know that I love your site. I’ve spent a lot of time reading the articles and it entertains the hell out of me. My favorite is the tribute to five terrible board games, featuring the Full House Game and Tetris.

Tweety - Gift Wrapped
If anyone wants something, maybe I can yousendit. Their all .avi. I’m going to look for more rare christmas shows"
I would love alvin and the chipmunks and a camp candy christmas.
I don’t really know what I could trade, I have mickey’s christmas carol, I could send you that in return… I may also have The Bugs Bunny Christmas Carol on an old Hard Drive, I can take a look if you’d like.
It snowed here today. Not enough to get snowed in, but enough for me to slam my car into the curb after spinning for awhile. Now it feels very Christmassy.
Matt, you are so good to all of us who drool like idiots for your updates, Thank You!

Can someone explain to me what an RSS feed is? I am internet retarded I know.

Chestnuts roasted by
kb @ 11/29/2005 7:20 PM EST
An RSS feed is a way for all updates to be downloaded to an RSS reader. I read most of the sites I read through an RSS feed. It’s a lot easier than clicking around and finding all the information you want through the sites themselves.

If I still was going to school this semester (I’m graduating college in less than 3 weeks), I would most likely have done a reading of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" or "Charlie Brown Christmas." I have music for both stories, and I purchased Charlie Brown Christmas book for my friend’s baby. Grinch is easy to obtain.
I still may do a special recording of Charlie Brown Christmas (with music and added lines from the teleplay) for my friend’s son. I have recording software and a microphone and have editing skills. Sounds like a cool idea, huh?
I pre-ordered "He Man and She-Ra Christmas" for the boyfriend as a pre-Christmas gift from amazon.com two weeks ago. Did everyone pre-order theirs yet? Comes out December 6th.

Yay Christmas! My mom has been busy so we haven’t had a chance to even get a lot of the Xmas stuff out yet. It’s not officially Christmas here until I dig up my old Muppets trio and my Christmas Crunch ornament!

Rudolph is on tonite on CBS. Also, the comic strip "Get Fuzzy" is about marshmallow Peeps today.
The Wizard issue with Matt’s article mention is #171.

Aw, crap. Down this way, "Rudolph the Red Knows Rain, Dear" is being pre-empted by college sports. And I don’t want to set my VCR to record it at 2:00 in the morning, when KWTV 9 will run it. Good thing I bought Ma that boxed set of Rankin-Bass specials last year. "Nobody wants a Charlie-in-the-Box!"

I’d let you guys know what kind of Compy I have, but I’m at college right now (during a free period), that and I just plain forgot. I’ll let y’all know when I get home later

TimCo, thx for the link! I’ve been scouring Google looking for a comprehensive Christmas specials list to enjoy with my kids. Trying to instill the "time-honored tradition" of a cup of hot cocoa and some great olde time classics.

When I checked the blog just now and saw all of those question marks, my heart leaped and I exclaimed how excited I was to my husband, in a sort of out-of-control voice. Kinda creeped me out.
Am I the only one giddy with anticipation for the advent calendar? Did I just use the word giddy in a sentence… on purpose?
Bring on the MARE!

So this is the first year that I’ve actually broken down and The Boyfriend and I have gotten Christmas stuff. Ever since I’ve been on my own, I’ve just had a tiny lit tree with a single shoebox of lame ornaments. My excuse was that you put the stuff out for one month, then it sits in storage for 11! But this year I was officially hit by the bug (in no small part thanks to X-E, by the way!). But DAMN! Christmas shit is expensive! We haven’t even gotten half our stuff (including the tree!) and we’ve already spent $50. Craziness.
In other news, our local Target put the Jones soda on clearance, so if anyone wants one, let me know (not the regional stuff; just the regular one). I guess here in Orlando there was no run on such things…
I know I’m behind the times, but for Black Friday we ran out to Circuit City and got two Sirius radio thingys free-after-rebate. I’m hoping satellite radio will actually have decent music and not loads of bad commercials, bad DJs, and bad music. Anyone have it and can confirm such allegations??

Chestnuts roasted by
purplegirl247 @ 11/30/2005 4:38 PM EST
Count me in as giddy.
Also, purplegirl, the Sirius has lots of different stations. It all depends on what you’re into. The DJ’s are pretty inoffensive. No commercials, but they do Sirius drops and jingles fairly frequently. If you’re into Christmas, they’re doing all Christmas music on Ch. 2 and all Country Christmas music on 52. Should be able to find something you like.

Best Buy has a 2 for $20 deal on holiday movies. I picked up Christmas Vacation and Charlie Brown Christmas. They had a couple other good choices too.

Also, the kind of Compy I have is a Dell Dimension 4100 from a few years ago, and I’m on Microsoft XP. Where do I get this player that will let me play .avi files? I’ve tried to play Seth MacFarlane’s "The Life of Larry" but I could not view it becuase it was on this kind of a file. I did found a RealMedia version of it, but it had crappy quality and froze roughly 4 minutes in.

I’m so sad–Paul Deanno is leaving CBS-3 in Philadelphia for WTVJ (NBC-6) in Miami. KYW just lost one of its best meteorologists. Not only that, but he is also extremely cute!! I met him during my internship this summer, and I have my picture with him. Needless to say, I’ll ALWAYS treasure it. He was a really nice guy too.
Anyone from the Philly area know who Paul Deanno is? I realize probably no one else is sadder than me, but he was a great guy. I’ll miss him.
Can’t you tell I’m in freakin’ mourning here?!

I gotta tell you guys about my tacky cookie jar–this thing is about 45-50 years old. My grandma bought it from a Woolworth’s/5 and 10 store in Central Jersey/Union County between the late 1950s and late 1960s. It’s ceramic with cookies raised and imprinted all over it–extremely tacky…and I love it to death. Has incredible sentimental value!

I think it’s probably not healthy that on the job I’m thinking of what should be done on XE…
