11/08/2005: Christmas Peeps Dolls!

I’ve been trying to “be good” when it comes to buying Christmas stuff this year, partly because we’re moving to a new apartment in a few months, and it’s become an “everything must go” situation during our preliminary packing.  On the other hand, when you’re walking through the junk food aisle of your local supermarket and spot plush Marshmallow Peeps dolls, whatever convictions you have just turn to mush.

It’s the latest chess move in Peeps’ plot to take over the world.  The dolls come in a small, plushy size (called “Bean Bags”) and a larger size (”Squeezes”) using materials more akin to a pillow.  The dolls reflect some of Peeps’ greatest Christmas entries — a snowman, gingerbread man and the almighty Christmas tree.  They’re perfect stocking stuffers, and I’m not entirely sure if there’s anything in the world I enjoy more that stuffed stockings.  Incidentally, the store also sold Christmas Peeps stockings, so you can stuff the Peeps into Peeps and, all told, finally have an avenue to use the word “Peeps” five times per sentence without being at all redundant.

EDIT: WOOO!  Jones Soda Regional Holiday Pack in my hands!  WOOOO salmon soda!

"everything must go"? does this mean you’re going to be giving up some of your collection?

Its official:  Peeps are the antichrist!!!
Moving to a bigger pad Matt?
Also, I’m just curious…but how many x-e fans are from the Pittsburgh area?

Wow, this is the earliest I’ve ever caught an X-E blog update.

Matt, you seriously need to look into doing an RSS feed for the site so we can more easily know when you update.

I’m still in Peeps withdrawal from Halloween.

Chestnuts roasted by Paul @ 11/08/2005 7:00 PM EST

All doubt is gone from my mind.  There is a god.

P.S. I’m not in Peeps Withdrawal, because I bought an assload of close-out Cocoa Cats for $0.25 a box.

Chestnuts roasted by mtrox @ 11/08/2005 7:04 PM EST

When I went to Target this week, I saw halloween stuffed peeps in the super-discount post-halloween section.  It was the cocoa cats, brown beanie ones and dark purple squishy ones.  They even had a fabric bag I suppose was meant to be taken trick-or-treating, shaped like the peeps cat.

I didn’t see them before halloween, so they must have screwed up their marketing.  It was all I could do to keep from buying one.

Chestnuts roasted by liz @ 11/08/2005 8:12 PM EST

I LOVE Gingerbread Men (collectibles and cookies alike). That Peeps guy looks so cute (and tasty).  I may need to go on a search for Mr. Gingerbread, or "Gingy," as I would like to call him.

Definitely take pictures of your wonderful junk, or "Wonderjunk" before you move, Matt.  I’ll stop combining words now.

SALMON SODA?!?!

Surely this is the seventh sign of the apocolypse.

Yikes.  Godspeed to the poor, poor bastard who must try that evil in a cute bottle.

Chestnuts roasted by Frito @ 11/08/2005 8:56 PM EST

Hoo boy that move is gonna be a monster.
I hope we get a blog feature on the Jones regionals, if not a main pager. Actually that would require the drinking of salmon soda, and I’m not wishing that on anyone so nevermind.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 11/08/2005 8:57 PM EST

Y’know, the regional box sure is pretty, and four of the flavors are new…so it might be a main pager.  If not, definitely a bloggy.  From what I understand, it’s meant for people in the Seattle area.  Dunno if this means it’s only available in and around the Seattle area, but that was Jones’ intent.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 11/08/2005 8:59 PM EST

Matt, you are a brave, lucky, foolish, brave, lucky, lucka-ass guy. I soon want to get both packs and live up to my promise from last thread.

And I find it funny that the posts now say "Roasted By" and Boo is still there….

Am I the only one who thought those things were edible at first? It would be a little horrible to slowly eat that snow man as he smiled at you.

Chestnuts roasted by D-MAN @ 11/08/2005 9:08 PM EST

I’m sorry to go INSANELY off-topic but I thought Matt might want to see these if he hasn’t heard about it already:

Rumour has it that Jason Voorhees’ is about to clock a few years off from his age. Yep, another Hollywood horror classic is getting remade.

The “Friday the 13th” series (the first being released in 1980) told the story of a picked-upon kiddie who drowns, but resurfaces years later as a ghastly unterminatable killer.

Funnily enough, Jason wasn’t actually the killer in the first film – it was his mother, but in the endless sequels that followed, it was the hockey-mask wearing rogue that got the credit for his slayings.

Kane Hodder, the man behind the Mask, told TV Guide that he thinks a remake is a good idea – if only because it means he might get the job again. Hodder, who was replaced for Freddy vs.Jason, says “[Restarting] might be in my favor, because they might not feel they were admitting anything if they went back to a "basic Jason" thing”.

Not surprisingly, The Weinstein Company have also decided to remake “Halloween”.

Twackius: If they remake Friday the 13th, epsecially with Jason as the killer, then I will give up on any belief in the basic decency of mankind.

Chestnuts roasted by Twackius @ 11/08/2005 9:14 PM EST

"so you can stuff the Peeps into Peeps"
That sentence makes me wonder if there is a peep fetish some where out there. Anyone else think something along those lines when they read that? My god, I need help.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 11/08/2005 9:32 PM EST

I dare anyone with the regional Jones sodas to just chug the salmon flavored soda without stopping or even smelling it.  Just down the whole bottle.  I bet the fat cats over at Jones won’t see that coming.
That soda reminds me of when Homer Simpson’s in NYC waiting for the guy to take the boot off his car’s wheel.
Cart Guy: "We have crab juice and Mountain Dew"
Homer: "Ewwwwwww!  I’ll have a crab juice"

Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 11/08/2005 9:43 PM EST

Gozer–I think it would be more of a task to SLOWLY drink the entire bottle of Salmon Soda.

Chestnuts roasted by mtrox @ 11/08/2005 9:48 PM EST

O.k. - but would it be more difficult to keep from barfing if you drank a quarter of the bottle slowly or the whole thing quickly?  Anyone willing to find out in the name or science?  Also, I wonder if the temperature even has an effect.  You’re probably gonna spew chunks either way.

Matt, Matt, MATT!!

Oh, how I have missed this site. Oh, how I hate real life for interfering with my ability to obsessively check this site seventy-seven times a day for updates. Oh, how I have missed your humor and your glorious love of everything from our childhood.

The last time I visited, you still had the Christmas decorations up. Granted, I think that was in the spring, but still…pretty soon it’ll be time to put them up again, huh?

I must admit that the upcoming Christmas season got me thinking of you, since you’re the one who got me back into the Christmas spirit last year. And totally made my day (month? year?) by blogging about my stupid little "fuck Jesus, yay Christmas and yay Matt" e-mail.

And of course I’ve been thinking with glee about the Advent Calendar goodness sure to come. *gleeglee*

I missed ya, Matt ol’ boy. I missed this site. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got quite the catch-up reading ahead of me. And I’m looking forward to every minute.

Love and early Christmas cheer,
Nicole

I saw ghost and purple and brown Peep Bean Bags in a few South Jersey stores during Halloween. I resisted them, too. I’m also hoping to move into a new apartment near Philadelphia in a few months, and I don’t need to be buying more junk, either…but if I can find the stuffed Christmas Peeps, I may cave in. The Gingerbread Man alone is too tempting for words.

I HAVE ONE OF THOSE! Except it’s an actual yellow peep. It’s the softest thing ever and it sits on my pillow and guards my bed while I’m away.

Chestnuts roasted by Starreh @ 11/08/2005 11:20 PM EST

Someone earlier mentioned that temperature of the liquid may have an effect on the ability to ingest the soda.  I would say that the colder it is, the easier it goes down.  That’s why I can chug a ice cold beer from the fridge but fight to take a few swigs from a hot one.

Something about a cold drink makes it go down better.

Gene - I’ve had that problem before.  Since I hate hitting reload 10 times, I usually just highlight where the picture should be until I see the spot and then right-click to "show picture".  It works well enough and doesn’t interfere too much with article reading.

Chestnuts roasted by Frito @ 11/08/2005 11:34 PM EST

The regional packs locator said I could find them in Pittsburgh, and find them in Pittsburgh I will.  I’ve already walked in and out of three Giant Eagles and one ShopnSave.

Why am I so desperate for salmon soda?

Chestnuts roasted by Jessica Marie @ 11/08/2005 11:46 PM EST

My World Market hasn’t got ‘em in yet. I have to keep checkin’, but I will have them. I’m so having a tasting soiree next week. No, seriously I have the regular pack in my possession. I also have someone bringing an assortment of Japanese sodas that are said to be just as "tasty" if not moreso.

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 11/08/2005 11:55 PM EST

To all the people who were talking about Pittsburgh, I actually used to go to California University of Pennsylvania, which is in the Pittsburghian area.

Also - Matt, you have more fortitude than I for even trying to Jones Holiday sodas. I had been offered the chance yesterday, and your reviews of them helped me choose which ones to trick other people into drinking and which ones to attempt to choke down.

Chestnuts roasted by AJ @ 11/09/2005 1:24 AM EST

Congratulations on getting a Regional Holiday Pack.  I’m foaming at the mouth when I will get to partake.  Do you want my video and reviews of both packages?  Remember, I’m zany enough to drink the WHOLE bottle of each flavor.

Hmm, I wonder if I could pass the video off on Newgrounds and become famous like that Numa Numa guy.

Hey there, Matt!  Like Nicole, I, too, am a re-newcomer.  Checked the site multiple times a day last year right around this season, and even told one of my professors about it–he almost died laughing at Mare’s wacky antics last Advent calendar.  Are you going to do your holiday jukebox again?  That was my favorite part.  Can’t wait for more tidings of the season!

Chestnuts roasted by emily @ 11/09/2005 9:09 AM EST

Aww, Matt, you remember me. Now I feel even more special. I went back last night and re-read that entry, and it gave me warm fuzzies to read and remember the nice things you said. And so, I give you a big, giant, warmfuzzy hug. *HUG*

I vow to never again let life interfere with my love of all things X-E. Dammit! :) You rule, Matt. It’s that simple.

Um, on topic, on topic…I don’t even like Peeps, but those stuffed ones are so cute. And you people all have way more fortitude than I to try those Jones holiday packs. Eeeeeyuck.

Jones Soda is from Seattle, so I think that the "regional" means where it’s from.  However, the only thing that seems super "seattle-y" is the salmon.  I would have expected some sort of coffee soda.
I like the peeps, but I can only imagine what storage must be like for you. Gingerbread peeps sound a bit too spicy though.  Have they got peppermint? Those would be good floating in a cup of hot cocoa.
Yesterday I decorated the coffee shop for Christmas, and Thanksgiving at the same time.  There’s just not enough big exciting Thanksgiving decorations to keep me happy till December.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 11/09/2005 10:09 AM EST

emily, go back to last year’s jukebox and you can still give it a listen. Matt said there would be new additions to the playlist, but I’m only hearing last year’s favs so far.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 11/09/2005 10:30 AM EST

kb - I got the gingerbread peeps last week and I don’t like them.  I don’t know if this makes sense, but they taste too sweet or something.  I wouldn’t say that they’re gross or anything, but not my cup of tea.  They might be o.k. in a cup of hot cocoa though.  I’ve still got three left though so maybe I’ll warm up to them now that they’re hard.

Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 11/09/2005 10:54 AM EST

Gozer-I’m all for Peeps…but year old Peeps just sound frightening…

Chestnuts roasted by Rosella @ 11/09/2005 11:35 AM EST

kb–

They don’t have peppermint peeps, but they sound ultra-tasty.  I still say they should make pumpkin pie-flavored peeps.  It makes more sense than releasing three different versions of plain peeps (for instance Ghosts, Pumpkins, Spooky Cats for Halloween).

As long as they don’t make their marshmallow taste like salmon or turkey-and-gravy, I’m all over new Peeps flavors.

Then again, turkey-and-gravy peeps sound kind of appetizing.

Chestnuts roasted by mtrox @ 11/09/2005 11:45 AM EST

I knew sumptin’ was up with Peeps!  Last Easter, Avon was offering plush Peep chicks with pull-back motors in them.  They were even supposed to have a "Peep-peep" sound as they waddled across the table.  Now, these ginormous guys show up.  The Fates are trying very hard to jump-start my X-Mas Spirit here.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 11/09/2005 11:46 AM EST

If Jones is intending for the regional Holiday Packs to only be available in Seattle, they’ve done a piss-poor distribution job.  Clicky on my name for evidence. :)

Anyway, I’m looking forward to Matt’s review.  The national pack review was pretty good, but if you wrangle more co-workers for the regional pack, Matt, encourage them to write more than 1 or 2 word descriptions!  I really enjoyed "Granger"’s comments from the national review.  "Betty" and "Wilma"’s were pretty anticlimactic, though.

Keep up the great work!

I can’t wait till I see the faces of the Salmon drinkers.

Mat needs to get a small video clip of it so we can run it in slow motion to properly capture the spray of soda and the variety of colorfull euphamisums for having intercourse with yourself that leave thier mouths.

An episode 3 clone trooper with the markings of the 501st legion, though on the box it says that it’s a clone lieutenant. In episode 2 the clones with blue markings were lieutnants but in ep 3 color showed what legion they were part of. I also got a new Darth Vader on Bespin when he revealed the awful truth to Luke.
