09/25/2005: The Jones Soda Halloween Collection!

Okay okay, you can stop e-mailing me, I got them I got them. Exclusive to Target, it’s the Jones Soda Halloween Collection, a series of four fine soft drinks ranging from “Caramel Apple” to “Candy Corn,” and yeah I’ve probably got 24 hours to live. Actually, they’re nowhere near as offensive as the flavors in last year’s Holiday Pack, but it’s just more proof that we should always think twice before drinking from cans with pictures of goblins on them. If interested, they’re cheap, on borrowed time and are absolutely going to be the cause of many “HAVE YA HEARD ABOUT DEEEEES” conversations this Halloween season. Enjoy, and pretend it’s Monday.

X-E-rama – now that sounds like a good idea. It would at least give me a valid excuse to go to NYC.

Oh wow I just noticed that everyone’s postings are now "ghostings." That pun hurts me deep down.

"The Road Warrior movie was awesome but wrestling sucks worse than Jones Soda."

Yeah, well that’s just like your opinion, man.

Ghosted by the Dude @ 09/25/2005 9:59 PM EDT

If Jones Soda were the greatest thing ever in the history of the Universe, everything would suck worse than Jones soda.

Ghosted by The Wukong Effect @ 09/25/2005 10:11 PM EDT

This is random, but I just saw the trailer for "Doom" the movie today. Is it just me or does it look like it’ll be really awful? I can handle "The Rock" too – at least he wasn’t in "The Pacifier". The trailer just had this terrible-movie feel to it. Not that it can’t be awful and still entertaining (the Resident Evil movies come to mind). When will mankind learn to make either games into good movies or movies into good games? Why? I blame E.T.

tonight i had a ‘halloween soda’ taste test, a rip off of Matt’s for the holiday pack, i had those jones flavors and the Mountain Dew Pitch Black II, lol Had a buncha friends over and we all got sick off of the drinks, and real candy corn.

While watching Winnie the Pooh Halloween

Ghosted by Rutir @ 09/25/2005 10:54 PM EDT

For the record I’m shocked Matt picked Pitch Black as the official beverage of the holliday season as well… I honestly now consider Caramel Apple to be my new favorite flavor of sugar water.

Tried the Candy Corn as well and it’s actually growing on me. It’s kind of like a heavy cream soda with a nice butterscotch finish.

Gozer I couldn’t agree more. It just has BOMB etched all over its ugly face. Why do movie studios have to make movies like this? O think it is extremely to make a good movie based off a good video game because the essence of the game is only faithfully reproduced while playing the game. Trying to throw in live action to the mix makes things worse (see Street Fighter: The Movie) because it just looks hokey. Leave games to be games please!!!!!

Ghosted by phunqsauce @ 09/26/2005 12:15 PM EDT

I agree with Doom looking like it just plain sucks. I don’t think I could could stand all the shots they did in first person point-of-view like in the game itself. It’d get tiresome after a while. But there has been some good movies based on video games, such as Resident Evil movies, more so Apocalypse. There has been a few alright ones too. But yeah, I suppose most of movies based on video games do suck. I guess they’re making Resident Evil: Afterlife. Hopefully it will be good.

So, a dumb question, how do you make the Jason face?

aw yeayh, Gremlins 2 is on!! Evrybody say whut whut!! Gotta love Brain. And Rambo Gizmo. And Grandpa Al!

the last half hour of Spidey 2 sucked, enough to make me not want to see the first one or the rest of the 2nd.

oh yeah, regular smilie :) sad smilie :( which is who I forget.

mmm, Phoebe Cates!@! and that hat…yowza!!

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 09/26/2005 1:24 AM EDT

What channel are you seeing Gremlins 2 on?

Yeah, a Doom ad ran during American Dad and it looks like they just filmed the game, then inserted shots of people screaming. The studio logic is, "these young people, who are the only people we care about, play video games. We must make quick movies out of them, plot be darned." Bah.

You know, I still believe it IS possible to make a good video game-based movie…it’s just that no one will try.

For anyone who might be interested, System of a Down and Mars Volta totally rocked my face this evening. It’s fine for anyone to think that SOAD is juvenille drivel dressed up to look like valid political commentary or whatever, but I defy anyone to attend one of their shows and not admit to having a good time. I started reading the article you linked, Gozer, but I stopped after the guy dissed Tool. I’m sorry…but NOBODY disses Tool.

Ghosted by The Yeti @ 09/26/2005 2:20 AM EDT

Gremlins 2 is on HBO Family. I’m so glad my parents have cable. Otherwise it sucks living with them again. :(

Mars Volta is okay, but I’ve never listened to much SOAD, not enough to like them. But I’m glad you had a good time at the show. Did you drink? Or smoke? ;)

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 09/26/2005 2:35 AM EDT

ya know, it’s totally open for a sequel, with Gizmo still alive, and the female Gremlin bride/whore/lounge singer was gettin’ it on with Robert Picardo. Gremlins 3, you know you would watch it!

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 09/26/2005 2:54 AM EDT

word movie game video game movie movies never work out, maybe somewhat for angelina jolie? but in general man BAD career move, i’m surprised the rock would go that way he seems business savvy

who knows maybe it will be a hit but these days – doubt it

ghostings is a nice touch!

gremlins 3: the retired batch

No, kidneyboy. No substance abuse for me last night. I was the DD. :-(

Ghosted by The Yeti @ 09/26/2005 8:41 AM EDT

Manimal, I totaly agree with you in that The Road Warriors were the Greatest Tag team in wrestling history, anyone who thinks otherwise is Nuts. Now on the topic at hand. I too had no luck in my hunt finding those Jones halloween drinks. Why is it that when one hears that something tastes like shit we too have to taste it. I still can’t figure that out? Oh well I guess we have to learn our lessons one way or the other.

Ghosted by Texican @ 09/26/2005 9:54 AM EDT

My own little mini review:

Candy Corn – I thought this was the worst of the batch. It tasted to me exactly like drinking carbonated maple syrup. 3 out of 10.

Caramel Apple – Pleasantly surprised by this one because it really did taste like drinking apple juice, but with a hint of sugar and/or caramel. 7 out of 10.

Scary Blue Lemonade – Huge disappointment. The flavor sounds so appealing, but it just didn’t live up. 4 out of 10.

Strawberry S’Lime – I thought this one was legitimately good. I found it to be rather tasty while choking down some hamburgers. 8 out of 10.

Mountain Dew Pitch Black – Pretty God awful terrible. And yet I can’t stop drinking it. I swear they put crack in Mountain Dew. I’m suprised I ever managed to ween myself off of Code Red. 5 out of 10.

On a sidenote, I think a pumpkin pie flavored drink could be interesting. Maybe a pumpkin pie milkshake. Hm…I think I’ll try to make one of those on my own for the Holiday season.

Ghosted by Brian @ 09/26/2005 9:55 AM EDT

Brian: I agree with the pumpkin pie drink thought. I really like the "pumpkin spice" drinks at Starbucks that they have now during the fall season. I think I even like it better than the gingerbread and pepermint stuff they have during Christmastime.

Ghosted by Gozer @ 09/26/2005 10:32 AM EDT

I was so thankful that Jones put them in tiny cans. It’s a lot less soda to choke down or feel like you’re wasting. Admittedly, though it’s in my fridge, I still haven’t tried Strawberry S’lime. I have tried the others, though. Scary Berry Lemonade was my first, and maybe I’m all screwed up, but I liked it. I drank the whole thing. And, yes, it was really cold. I’ve found that very few sodas actually taste good warm, and those that do always taste better frosty, so I figured they stood their best chance being chilled overnight. Brian was right, the Candy Corn soda did have a decidedly maple flavor. I recoiled in horror with one sip. Between my husband and I we’ve managed to pawn off all but one can. But, I think Caramel Apple rocked. It was like sparkling apple juice with a touch of caramel in it. The more I drank it, the more it grew on me. I actually found myself craving another can of it a little later. Make no mistake, it’s a strange flavor, but the kind you can’t help but want to keep trying. God bless Jones Soda.

After reading the article, and clicking the link to the Thanksgiving soda one, may I bring back the "I love VT" discussion from back then?
:) :) :) :)

For some reason this year I have been devouring candy corn and candy pumpkins like crack, its hard stuffing them in those glass pipes however. Seriously, though I’m eating pounds of them. I’ve been thinking of mixing some with vanilla ice cream too.

Ghosted by Funky Boo Berry the 70's Ghost @ 09/26/2005 12:35 PM EDT

Actually the candy corn got me thinking of a new delicious Thanksgiving flavor: Creamed corn!!! YAY! And the word yay has me thinking of another: yams. Go yams.

Ghosted by Funky Boo @ 09/26/2005 12:37 PM EDT

I’ve been working on a review of the Caramel Apple drink for my site, and it’s hard to pin down an opinion..

If you just take a quick drink, to me, it’s sort of like ginger ale but extra sweet.. however, if you swish it around your mouth like wine you can taste the distinctive flavors a lot more.

Ghosted by Review the World @ 09/26/2005 12:44 PM EDT

Huzzah to the Matt! He is all powerful! I am SO getting those now. Is the Scary Berry Lemonade different fromt their regular Berry Lemonade? Cause I’ve tried that, and I like it.

And NO ONE realizes that this is Blog #666??? Spooky.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/26/2005 2:02 PM EDT

If you work your Googleage you can find a pretty recent blog discussion of the possibility of an actual Gremlins 3, including a quote from Joe Dante (basically saying ‘No dice’).

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/26/2005 2:04 PM EDT

I wonder if trying to get this to 666 posts is asking too much?

Ghosted by kingklash @ 09/26/2005 2:09 PM EDT

I’m never adventurous when it comes to consumables, but I’m pretty enticed now…candy corn grosses me out just as candy, so I think I’ll be avoiding that particular drink. But seeing the scary berry in the glass reminded me of the first time I drank blue Kool-Aid and thought it was the best thing ever.

Ghosted by Jessica Marie @ 09/26/2005 2:19 PM EDT

Jack and a box has a pumpkin pie milkshake, its frigging great! tastes exactly like it. Matter of fact, its better then the pie cause you can slurp it up instead of use a fork haha.

Ghosted by the80sruled @ 09/26/2005 2:26 PM EDT

It’s kinda weird seein Jones Soda in cans, something.. unholy about it..
Matt, I don’t know if you’re already on top of this but I just saw a badass (using the term loosely) Halloween commercial for Go-Gurt. Go-Gurt seems evil enough, but they’ve got skeletons and pumpkins n shit on the packaging so if you haven’t already it might be something cool to check out for the countdown.

Ghosted by WonKa @ 09/26/2005 2:36 PM EDT

Speaking of nasty sounding but good tasting drinks, have any of you people just taken a bottle of mouth wash and just guzzled it. After I saw Carrot Top talk about it on space ghost I had to try. I threw up :(

Ghosted by Darth Poop @ 09/26/2005 2:58 PM EDT

I love regular strawberry lime…almost tempted to run downstairs and buy a bottle (except the last time I was down there, they only had the crappy flavors like berry lemonade left). Too bad the campus store won’t sell the Halloween flavors, though, I’d love to try caramel apple. (Oh, the woes of lacking transportation.)

Ghosted by Megan @ 09/26/2005 3:01 PM EDT

I have finally had my mind twisted enough by XE to make my first compulsive purchase. Yes, the Jones soda halloween flavors, along with Matt’s article pursuaded me to buy all four flavors. I will spend tonight tourturing my wife as I beg her to try these ghoulish drinks with me.

Wukong the Target in the big city just North of you (that would be in NW Louisiana) has two huge shelves full of the Jones soda.

"They’re coming to drink it, Barbara!"

Ghosted by kingklash @ 09/26/2005 5:58 PM EDT

I forgot to mention this, but I think the Scary Berry Lemonade tastes like the middle of a raspberry Tootsie Pop. You have to envision it at the point where the chocolate is peeking through, but there’s still raspberry candy left so you’re getting an equal taste of both. That’s my opinion anyway.

Ghosted by Lori @ 09/26/2005 6:04 PM EDT

Out here in LA I tracked some Candy Corn soda down pretty easily at the local Target. I loved this stuff for about 3 sips, it’s all downhill from there. I can see why the cans are so small. You can only take so much of this stuff.

Ghosted by D-Roc @ 09/26/2005 6:22 PM EDT

Yeti…bummer, but an honorable sacrifice.

I work at Culver’s and we have pumpkin milkshakes and malts. We actually just use the pumpkin pie mix(the stuff that looks like it came out of Robocop’s ass trap) and just blend it up with custard. And a sprinkle of cinammon on top. We also have cranberry shakes (duh, being in Wisconsin!) and eggnog shakes start in the winter (which means next week in Wisconsin :) )

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 09/26/2005 9:01 PM EDT

Holy Gross Batman! The candy corn stuff is the worst soda i have ever had.

Ghosted by BetterThanFew @ 09/26/2005 10:05 PM EDT

I know the sodas themselves aren’t worth it, but I knew nothing of Jones Sode before this article and now I have to try them.

On a side know, I hadn’t read that Christmas article from last year until now and wow, you work(ed?) with some attractive ladies, Matt :)

Ghosted by Night_Trekker @ 09/27/2005 1:35 AM EDT

Brian,
Jack-in-the-Box made a pumpkin pie shake last year. It’s pretty good. Order a small. Like the Jones Soda, a little goes a long way.

Ghosted by Bitchick @ 09/27/2005 7:26 AM EDT

Being in the UK, I have to say it’s fascinating to see all the effort fimrs/people go to over Halloween in the US. We just don’t get any of this stuff over here. To be honest, the shops are so full of Christmas stuff there isn’t any room for it..

Ghosted by DTMS @ 09/27/2005 2:30 PM EDT

I always found it odd that Halloween is so unappreciated in the UK, considering all this stuff began in England and the British Isles.

I hope it’s at least still popular in Ireland.

Ghosted by Monte @ 09/27/2005 4:10 PM EDT

The soda cans dissapeared years ago here (PerĂº) coz they were more expensive than bottles (but beer cans still existing). Just imagine Halloween scary soda bottles… I’d like that :D

Ghosted by Yelinna @ 09/28/2005 12:23 PM EDT

no halloween in england? blasphemy!

funky boo is HI-larious!!

Ghosted by diamondzdigidul @ 09/28/2005 3:48 PM EDT

The only one I liked is the Berry Lemonade it reminds me of Slush Puppies/Nerds candy.

The rest taste like shit…

Ghosted by Jackie @ 09/28/2005 10:08 PM EDT

I never really thought much of Jones soda to begin with, and that Thanksgiving set of theirs looked absolutely revolting.

This doesn’t seem much better either. I love soda more than anyone, but that’s just going too far.

Ghosted by Booth @ 09/28/2005 10:14 PM EDT

I feel like the Strawberry S’lime and the Scary Berry Lemonade are just regular Jones soda flavors year round. I bought a twelve pack each of Strawberry Lime and Berry Lemonade at Target over the summer.

I haven’t tasted the Halloween editions though, so I’m not sure about that. I really liked the Strawberry Lime though.

Ghosted by Sami @ 09/28/2005 10:48 PM EDT

Question: Now understanding that S’Lime and Berry Lemonade are perennial flavors, does anyone know if they’ve been dyed such weird colors during their "normal" run?
