Forever Linked With Furby!

It's been a pretty special day for me. I've slowly gotten into the producing side at Nick, meaning, on occasion, I get to produce the spots I write. It'd take me eight paragraphs to explain what that means, but essentially, you stay with a project from start to finish and direct every creative aspect of it. About a month ago I won a pitch for a Furby-related "giveaway spot" (this is why I went to Toronto a few weeks back), and today, the bitch hit the air. I love it. It's so me. Love it so much that I'm going to put up with a 20MB download to let y'all see it, because I doubt very much that I can persuade the site's audience to watch Nickelodeon all week until my spot happens to come on. It wasn't too terribly long ago that I spent my days hunting down Furbies at toy stores during their initial hot run to make a fast buck on eBay. Now I've done a commercial for 'em. My dreams are twisted, granted, but it's nice to see some of them come true.

The Halloween Countdown rolls on with September 13th's tribute to McDonald's Halloween Gift Certificates, a free ticket to cheeseburgers for any trick-or-treater who was lucky enough to find the holy house that gave them away. Last call for the Halloween Art Contest, as I've already gotten plenty of entries, including a few that are quite clearly awesome in every way possible.

Wow – that Nick ad is flippin’ awesome! Congrats. That’s gotta be nice to see your vision come to life and be all polished and expensive.
By the way, is there a particular reason that the new Furby’s are being marketed towards girls? At least the ad made it seem that way.

Oh yeah – I liked the rhyming too. "Borrow your clothes" vs. "shoot out of your nose"? Genius.

With all this talk about Halloween, me and my friend started to discuss years past. He went to public school and I went to catholic school. I realized that it must have been a totally different experience for kids who went to public school. For kids in catholic school, you got off the day after halloween for all saints day, a holy day of obligation. So, God willing, if halloween fell on a thursday, it was friggin awesome because your 4 day weekend started with halloween. I guess kids in public school never experienced that which must have really friggin sucked.

My guess is that they’re skewing them younger more specifically on this go around because the assumption would be that people who had the original Furby would be less inclined to want the new ones. Of course, this doesn’t answer your question at all.

My birththday is tomorrow! Eeee!

Happy b-day, KenneFFFF!

Thanks foo’!

Wow, I am happy for you. It’s rad that your talent is being seen by the masses. Did that sound too schmoozy? Cause I meant it.
Random stories from your childhood always amuse me.

I took a picture that was published in a local paper, which I thought was pretty cool. Then I sign on the Web and see that you’ve produced a friggin’ Furby commercial – way to completely make me see how small my little accomplishment was.

So jealous.

Can I be you?

Actually, I’m going to have to offer some thanks, Matt. People don’t believe me when I say that Furby is back. Credibility through television – huzzah!

Chestnuts roasted by Tougi @ 09/12/2005 8:58 PM

That’s insane Matt. Congrats.

You need to write those eight paragraphs one day.

Awesome ad, Matt! Congratulations and keep up the great work you’ve been doing on the website.

Here’s something I’ve wondered for a while….how did you land the Nick job? Did you see an ad for it in the New York Classifieds? Did someone at Nick read X-E and think "we need this guy"? Was it accomplished through the evil power of networking (some guy you met before now worked there and brought you in)? Or did you simply walk in and give them your resume?

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 09/12/2005 9:43 PM

They were doing a spotlight on a kid and one of the producers caught him reading the site. Ultimately was brought in for a trial and clawed my way into the ranks with the help of some very awesome people there.

WOW, great spot! Good graphics, good rhyme scheme, good promotion, etc. I didnt know you got the job that way. Very serendipitous.
I guess I need to stop procrastinating and get my art in.

That furby commercial made me cry, I wish I got to make commercials that make people cry. Congrats on the success Matt. If I sound sarcastic I don’t mean to be. You know I love you. Ephant Mon enema :o

gerv:
That’s awesome. I’m actually a pretty big closet Hilary Duff fan. Shh – don’t tell anyone! I know her music isn’t very "good", but it’s really catchy. (No offense to your friend – the music itself is well done, but the writing/composing isn’t exactly inspired).

Now that ain’t workin’ that’s the way you do it
You play the guitar on the mtv
That ain’t workin’ that’s the way you do it
Money for nothin’ and your chicks for free

Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 09/12/2005 10:13 PM

Matt:
Well, I was sorta wondering why the Furbys are being marketed to teenage girls too, so that makes sense. I never really thought about who the first generation Furbys were marketed to (or who actually bought them). It’s pretty unconventional, so I don’t know who the most obvious demographic would be for something cute/technological.

Chestnuts roasted by Gozer @ 09/12/2005 10:17 PM

Oh my GAWD! That’s how you got in at Nick?!? Wow.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 09/12/2005 10:22 PM

your right gozer…her music is filled with "hooks" (the good stuff in songs that stick in your head all day long)…i like her theme song to Laguna Beach (closet fan, but hey, at least a couple of the girls are friggin hot….do you spell that kinda "hot" with one "t" or two?) Funny thing is he was raised on Kiss, Zepplin, and Chili Peppers and now he plays this.

Chestnuts roasted by gerv @ 09/12/2005 10:36 PM

I saw a commercial for Furbies the other day (no, not Matt’s) and was surprised that they are still making them…Or is this a resurgence? Has the retro fad already made late 90s fads "cool" again? If so, that’s really sad….

I remember when Furby came out and everyone thought it was the most awesome technology in the world….wow, times have changed…

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 09/12/2005 10:38 PM

Any chance we could see that in wmv format?

Chestnuts roasted by Mr. Mr. Mr. @ 09/12/2005 10:43 PM

They never quit making Furbies, at least AFAIK. I can’t watch the ad yet, and I’m dyin’ here.
That’s not the same Roger that everybody had and you can still find at every Goodwill, is it? Looks pretty dinky. Fun fact: Charlie Fleischer dressed up in a rabbit suit everyday on the set while they were filming the movie.
