09/03/2005: Saturday Thread, Duh.

I’ve only got a quick sec before a friend stops by to help me with a computer hardware issue in exchange for free Japanese food, SO HERE’S YER SATURDAY THREAD! All day, all night, all right.

Our official movie of the night: A Nightmare on Elm Street: Part II, airing on Encore at 10:35 PM. (And for others, at different times, and for others, at no time at all. Buy the damn DVD.) The Monday after next marks the start of X-E’s 2005 Halloween Countdown – yay!

Edit: It’s Sunday. Keep posting.

Yeah this was a pretty good one, let’s keep it goin. :)

Also, to Dopo: Sorry to hear that. Hope you’ll have a change of heart.

Kingklash,
Sounds like someone is thinking merchandising…Although I must admit, I think the X-E action figures would be on every Christmas list but overlooked by parents opting instead for "traditional" toys such as Lincoln Logs, EZ bake ovens, etc. I for one look forward to joining the ranks of the "CLEARANCE" shelf.
The local WAL-MART has the Halloween candy out but that’s it. Other stores had SOME stuff out but nothing major.

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/04/2005 6:12 PM EDT

My favorite thing about the Halloween season is the stockpiling of shitty horror DVDs at WalMart, Target, Meijer, etc. Last year I picked up "The Backlot Murders" featuring Corey Haim. It was terrible as expected. Can’t wait to see what comes out this year!

Matt – maybe you should post something indicating that this blog is still going. Is that possible?

Also, I’d just like to thank the 10 of you from last night who clicked through to my page. Muchos gracias.

Ghosted by Kyle @ 09/04/2005 7:27 PM EDT

Oh you know it. This time I will NOT pass up on that DVD of Trick or Treat…

Oh Gene Simmons, what WON’T you do for money?

Ghosted by AJ @ 09/04/2005 7:30 PM EDT

I love 3 day weekends, I don’t dread tomorrow. So today is a good day AND I went and bought fall themed decorations yesterday and put them outside my front door. They’re sitting right next to my flowers in full bloom.
Also, From Justin to kelly is on tonight. It’s not horror, but I bet it’s scary.

Ghosted by kb @ 09/04/2005 7:47 PM EDT

Apparently it IS possible.

So yeah – I’m at work, once again, as always. Verrrrrrrrry slow tonight. The catalog business dies on holidays, so I guess I’ll be around tonight. Knegative, come and get me…I’m waiting. And I’ve even got a half-assed excuse.

Ghosted by Kyle @ 09/04/2005 7:52 PM EDT

damn, Encore has some good shit on!! Christine just got done, now I’m trying to tune out We Are the World, waiting for Revenge of the Nerds II, and then, the showcase!! Wait for it……

REAL FUCKIN’ GENIUS!!!

Oh yeah, I am stoked!1

In the history of having Mondays off, I don’t think I’ve ever been more thrilled to have Monday off. Thank God.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/04/2005 8:04 PM EDT

In my own personal history of working every fucking day, I’ll be at work tomorrow. Ugh.

Matt – out of curiousity, did you ever get my email? And if so, thumbs up or thumbs down? And I won’t be offended if you find it necessary to delete this post.

Ghosted by Kyle @ 09/04/2005 8:06 PM EDT

Kyle — let me check, if I see I’ll write back, if I don’t, I don’t have it. :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/04/2005 8:08 PM EDT

well, I don’t have tmrw off, but I only work for 6 hours, so I got that goin’ for me.

Totally MAD…It’s a Gas!!

Reminds me of some PRIMUS lyrics: "Funny thing about weekends when you’re unemployed, they don’t mean quite so much except you get to hang out with your working friends."
While it’s been awhile since I could truly identify with that sentiment, I will say that it is weekends don’t mean as much when one is a teacher with papers to grade.

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/04/2005 9:19 PM EDT

Manimal, what grade do you teach?

Oooh hope nobody’s eating dinner and watching Rome. I was just kidding when I said it’s as good as Carnivale, but it is pretty fun to watch.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/04/2005 9:38 PM EDT

Are the accents ridiculous enough in Rome? IE: bad English accents = Latin?

Ghosted by AJ @ 09/04/2005 9:55 PM EDT

Okay, I’m back.

AJ: I know not too many people are fans of BFS. But they’re my fat boys in arms. Powerpop/Emo and I’m all over it. Erik is one of my bass heroes :)

Kyle:Sorry to make that sound malicious last night. "How can you not have seen Bogus Journey?" is the meanest thing I’m prepared to throw. Just giving these guys a respite from my Keanu posturing. So, what’s the excuse? I’m honestly curious.

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/04/2005 10:00 PM EDT

Here goes:

Did you ever see that episode of "The Simpsons" when the Itchy & Scratchy movie came out, and Bart did something bad, and as a result wasn’t allowed to see it? Then at the end of the credits, they show in the future, Bart is a priest, and he and Homer are walking down the street and see that the movie is playing, and decide to see it, and it turns out to not even be all that good?

It’s sort of like that.

My dad was promising, promising, promising me that he’d take me to see it. I mean, this was my life. But I didn’t get in trouble. My dad, at the time somewhat of a holy roller, and especially protective of his kids, read a review of the movie. "They make a deal with the devil? There’s no way I’m taking you to see this now." And so it was. I’ve had the opportunity to see it a million times – and every time someone finds out that I haven’t seen it, they flip the fuck out like I just ran over their dog or something.

So why haven’t I seen it? I guess I’m just afraid that it won’t live up to my expectations. In my mind, this movie is like Citizen Kane – absolutely perfect in every way. And there’s no way I’m going to watch it and fuck that up. I mean, maybe eventually, but I’ll wait a little longer.

Now, if they decide to make a 3rd, I guess I’ll have to.

Ghosted by Kyle @ 09/04/2005 10:20 PM EDT

Matt, I’m not sure if you got it and read it or just never got it, so I’m going to re-send it in a minute, unless you tell me otherwise.

Ghosted by Kyle @ 09/04/2005 10:26 PM EDT

Interesting. I can respect that. Say 3 Hail Neo’s and remedy the situation. It’s not the greatest movie ever, but , for me anyway, it’s way better than Excellent Adventure.

Oh and 1.) they don’t make a deal with the devil and 2.) I’m not disrespecting your father’s faith and/or yours.

Just please tell me you’ve seen Reloaded and Revolutions :D

And no wiseacre comments from anyone else about those sequels. I’ve heard it all before :P

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/04/2005 10:36 PM EDT

AJ, you’re right on. Though in this episode they dropped a couple of phrases I’m assuming were actually Latin.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/04/2005 10:40 PM EDT

Maybe I should check it out then. I actually took Latin my last year in college.

Amor Fati :D

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/04/2005 10:46 PM EDT

Yeah, I’ve been told that they don’t actually do that…but I won’t let anyone tell me what actually happens. Someone said something about Death once, but I cut them off.

And of course I’ve seen the sequels. Don’t be silly.

Ghosted by Kyle @ 09/04/2005 10:50 PM EDT

Why do I get the feeling A Sound Of Thunder will be my new favorite movie ever?

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/04/2005 10:53 PM EDT

I’ve never seen the sequels…sorry ;) ;)

This is God, Kent!

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 09/04/2005 10:55 PM EDT

Because you haven’t seen Pulsebeat.

Ghosted by Kyle @ 09/04/2005 10:55 PM EDT

Good. I’m kinda glad Squee gave me an opening. If any one wants to know what I said means, you have to play Enter the Matrix or watch Reloaded Revisited. This of course allows me to remind everyone about Path of Neo Nov. 15th. New ending for those who didn’t like the original. Can’t wait to see what it is. Maybe it’s my turn to be annoyed. I loved the original ending.

I agree, it will be nice to see something with a bit of originality for a change. There’s few movies I go to the theater for, but that will be one of them.

Ev-ry-bo-dy Wants to Rule the World!!

Kneg, I’m almost dreading asking this…but what is Path of Neo? new movie or new DVD?

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 09/04/2005 11:12 PM EDT

Calm down Kidney. It’s not that level of blasphemy. It’s a videogame. PS2 & XBOX. The ending had to be changed because well, letting Smith overtake you wouldn’t be a very satisfying video game experience (I know alot of people didn’t think it was a satisfying movie going experience either :P )

You can change Neo’s Path (e.g. you can go up to the roof of MetaCortex instead of letting yourself be taken in by the agents.) and the Wachowskis have written every alternate path and, obviously, the alternate ending.

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/04/2005 11:20 PM EDT

Thanks Kneg! :D

You lost me after XBOX. I really don’t know anything about the Matrix. I watched the first one all messed up on something or other, and never saw the other two. Saw one section of the Animatrix, but again, I must have blanked out all the details.

But thanks for the answers!

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 09/04/2005 11:29 PM EDT

Always glad to spread the gospel :P

It’s finally giving me an excuse to get a PS2. And hey I can pick up Enter the Matrix and Constantine for like 12 bucks apiece. Rock!

So, personal distaste for sci-fi, specific hatred of Matrix or Keanu, or just not interested? Much like Star Wars geeks, Redpills always wonder why people don’t care for what they believe to be the greatest thing ever.

"Why don’t you like us? [puppydog eyes]" :P

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/04/2005 11:37 PM EDT

I like sci-fi, I like Keanu…I don’t know. I think it has to do with all the hype surrounding the franchise, and that, before I even saw it, I had heard that you have to watch the movie at least twice to understand what’s going on. It’s like it was implied that wyou wouldn’t know what the story was until you watched it again, kind of like that.

So the storyline never quite became clear to me, and thus I never watched the sequels.

And, no offense, people do seem to kind of obsess about it. Much like the Lord of the Rings movies. In fact, I’ve never seen any of those either…so maybe that drives me away from the Matrix as well.

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 09/04/2005 11:53 PM EDT

Holy Shit! Robert Downer Jr. is in Back to School, which is on right now. Earlier, he was on in The Pick-Up Artist, and yesterday, he was in Weird Science. I guess, according to Encore, Robert Downer Jr. represents the ’80’s.

And the son in Back to School was Arnie in Christine, which was on earlier today. Weird I know!

I work tomorrow, but not until one, and holiday pay makes my crappy wage seem a little better. I’m just now preparing for an illegally downloaded South Park mini-marathon. I’ve downloaded ep 814 and 901 – 907. I’m very excited. And I wish I was an action figure.

Ghosted by Gabbylicious @ 09/05/2005 12:31 PM EDT

Speaking of Back to School, it was filmed here in good ol’ Madison, WI on campus. It’s kind of funny to watch it and see places that I used to go every week. Of course, I don’t live or work in NYC like Matt does, so since about 95% of all movies are set in NYC it’s probably not the same for them.
Plus, it’s a pretty funny movie all-around too. Obviously not as good as Caddyshack (another classic with Rodney Dangerfield), but it has its moments.

Ghosted by Gozer @ 09/05/2005 12:49 PM EDT

Gozer, I actually just found that out! That’s pretty damn cool. Did they do any outside shots that you recognized, besides the campus buildings?

This is a great movie, I forgot how many cool people are in it!!

Rodney
Robert Downer
Archie
Hot Lips
Burt Young
fuckin’ Sam Kinison!!
Kurt Vonnegut
Brother Wayne Jason Hervey
Ned "squeal like a pig, Mr. Conner" Beaty!
Oingo Boingo! Danny Elfman rocks, and I totally forgot they play Dead Man’s Party!

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 09/05/2005 12:58 PM EDT

I really need to learn to come back here more often to read as things go on. As for the Matrix, I absolutely loved the first movie, and I thought that Revolutions would have been a great film if it WASN’T part of the series, but Reloaded was just so God awful that I wept throughout it. Then again, I spent my time counting light bulbs on the ceiling during Revolutions…

That’s beside the point, though, as I have no point to make. I just wish Twin Peaks season 2 was out already. I just started re-watching season 1 and I forgot all about the uber-cliff hanger of doom finale.

Also, this movie I just got Kibakichi is the most ridiculously hilariously bad movie ever. It’s like Samurai Teen Wolf.

I thought about bringing that X-E chat room up a little while ago. Sure it wouldn’t be the same as the good old blog comment threads but I’d love to have a chatroom to talk to you all in conversations tend to go more smoothly when you don’t have hit the damn refresh button every couple minutes.

I’ve gotten kind of sick of NoES II it’s been played to death in various rotations of the entire Starz/Encore channel line up the last few months. Its funny tho every time I do see it I get flashbacks of the first time I watched it.

I was maybe 7 or 8 at the time being babysat by my older sister who was 13 at the time and she had her best friend over. Those 2 were positively OBSESSED with the nightmare flicks (and ironically enough since someone brought it up the sleepaway camp flicks too lol)

They decided to pop NoES II into the VCR. I being 7 got scared and her friend let me sit in her lap….well at some point she got the bright idea to try to scare the shit out of me so she starts doing her best imitation of Jesse during his freddy transformation. She wraps one arm around me and put her right hand to my face. The bitch even had just enough dirt under her nails to convince me of the possibility that she was gonna sprout claws. She then muttered something in the best freddyesque voice that a 13 year old chick could muster at which point I screamed, bit her forearm so she’d let me go.

I ran through my rents bedroom locked the door behind me then into their adjacent bathroom and locked that too. I stayed in there for hours till my rents finally came home and my dad jimmied both door open with a flathead screwdriver.

My sister got grounded for a month as a result and her friend was forbidden to come over for months up until they both apologized to me for it.

kidneyboy:

Do yourself a favor and see the LotR movies. Get the Extended Editions, sit down, and watch all three. Over 10 hours, but well worth it. They are great films…

As for the Matrix..loved the first one. Reloaded: OK. Certainly not as good. I like Revolutions better. Everyone else said the ending sucked…I thought it was brilliant. Then again, I am a philosophy minor, and I really enjoyed the Matrix films for the philosophical aspects–not the action ones.

And boo to all you people that have tomorrow off. I still have classes at college. The Law School doesn’t have classes, but of course the lowly undergrads do. Dammit…

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 09/05/2005 1:55 AM EDT

Is Matt looking forward to A Sound of Thunder because he heard it’s bad and he loves bad films?

Late August is a dumping point for bad films, and this was released as late in August as possible, with no advance screening for critics. Its Rotten Tomatoes rating isn’t very good either.
Kind of a drag…unlike all other movies about the consequences of time travel that stem from it, this was based on the Ray Bradbury original. Bradbury even had a hand in the film. And it turned out bad.

How odd it is that I am anywhere near the X-E blog at 3:44 AM Labor Day Eve. This is what we call teething. When she’s teething, I sit up with her and read comments about movies I haven’t seen and work on Jamestown powerpoints. Teething takes us all back to her newborn days.
It is quite an existence.
KYLE-I teach U.S. History this year which is mainly consisted of 11th graders. Last year was U.S. and World (10th and 11th) and the year before that was 7th grade (yuck) geography of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Very scary comments posted above for me personally since I watched that SIMPSONS episode about the Itchy and Scratchy movie AND I started watching CITIZEN KANE tonight (I feel asleep). Fear has gripped me…

I got a SUPER SWEET Halloween job this year. Security for the Dallas Scaregrounds. Basically the job entails wearing a black shirt/black jeans and standing inside a haunted house until 2am. The orientation included such instructions as "if anyone smokes: rip the cigarette out of their mouth, throw it on the ground, crush it under your foot, and tell em to keep moving." They actually pay you to do this stuff! So pumped up!!

The original Matrix is phenominal. Nothing could have followed that up and lived up to it. That said, I liked Reloaded a lot, but I was also disappointed in Revolutions. Half of it (the Zion half) I loved, and the other half felt really flat. This is going to sound odd, because the whole thing was 3 movies long, but overall Revolutions feels… very rushed. The Animatrix was great.

Enter the Matrix is worth about $10, if that. The extra back story is cool but the game itself is obviously really rushed and ultra bland after about 10 minutes of play. The driving levels are among the very worst I’ve ever played. But I’m glad I played through it with both characters.

I’m not sure I like that we’re going to be able to play as Neo. That just seems like a little much. I’ll probably play the game when it comes out, but I don’t really like the idea. Changing the end kind of bothers me too, but I can see why they would have to do it.

I usually don’t post here alot but on the ba dreams discussion, I had a fucking weird one last night. After being up for 48 hours straight, I passed out around midnight.

Enter the Cryptkeeper and Elfman’s specatacular theme. Did anyone ever see the episode with Ewan McGregor, where him and his woman are zombies? Well it was that episode. Nuff said.

Ghosted by The Juggalo @ 09/05/2005 6:18 AM EDT

Were they zombies? I remember that they were undead, but that’s the only ep of that show I ever watched and I’m getting it all mixed up with Bordello of Blood and From Dusk Til Dawn.
I refused to watch Matrix for a long time, but I enjoyed Reloaded and the Animatrix (which is way better than anything they came up with in the movies IMHO) had me convinced that they were really gonna bring it together for a big payoff at the end of it all. I don’t think they quite managed it, though.
