09/03/2005: Saturday Thread, Duh.
I’ve only got a quick sec before a friend stops by to help me with a computer hardware issue in exchange for free Japanese food, SO HERE’S YER SATURDAY THREAD! All day, all night, all right.
Our official movie of the night: A Nightmare on Elm Street: Part II, airing on Encore at 10:35 PM. (And for others, at different times, and for others, at no time at all. Buy the damn DVD.) The Monday after next marks the start of X-E’s 2005 Halloween Countdown - yay!
Edit: It’s Sunday. Keep posting.

So, to kick off the halloween related shit, what do you guys without social lives plan to do fer halloween? Thankfully I haven’t exhausted my money beforehand, so I am in the middle of constructing a Cthulhu costume. The wings and tentacles are a bitch, though.

The reason I don’t nowadays is because all my friends are pretty much gone since we all graduated this june.
I may try to do something cool this Halloween, like take my girlfriend to some of the scary things they plan in my town, like the haunted corn maze. That’s usually pretty badass.

Now that I’ve graduated from college (and am, by extension, an old, old man) I plan on sitting around at home on Halloween, scaring children who happen by. You know, more than usual. Although I do plan on putting something spooky on the door of my apartment. Like a cardboard spider. Or perhaps a pumpkin. Or a severed head.

I’m stuck at work all night…which means I’ll be in and out of here all night. Whoot! I never saw NoES II, but I did watch a movie called "Freaked" the other night. Interesting, to say the least…anyone else ever seen it? Oh, and feel free to click on my name.

In regards to Halloween plans: I have been put in charge of decorating the office, which means that this children’s toy company is going to emanate the stench of death for the entire month of October. I’m looking for a skeleton or two. Luckily my friend Chris, who drives a hearse, just got a job here, so that should help with the ambiance. Outside of work, I’m not sure what I’ll be doing…but the girl I’ve been seeing lately has a bunch of ideas, so we’ll see. All I know is that if I don’t eat at least two handfuls of candy corn and candy pumpkins, it’ll be a wasted Halloween.

I have no idea what I’ll be doing for Halloween this year. Since I’m not currently taking college courses I’ll probably have time to do something this year… but what?
I’ll probably end up on candy distribution duty again this year. That’s fine with me–it guarantees me an assload of free candy and gives me the option to dress up if I want to.
I’m so unmotivated though, about pretty much everything. Maybe something will pop up to spark my Halloween passion this year. I hope so.

Well, seeing as I have no power and no cable due to Katrina (I am currently at work soaking up AC and internet) I will not be watching any TV tonight. However as a Nightmare fan, I can say that 2 is my least favorite. That’s how many times I’ve seen it. 2.

See I always liked the idea of 2. That being said, I would have liked it more if 2 was the last one. Then it’d be more acceptable. With that, too, being said. I like all the others better.
The one thing I always wanted to see though would be Freddy just watching people’s dreams to find out their fears. That would be creepier to me than him outright killing you. Just knowing he is watching would give me quite the case of the willies.

My grandparents lived on an Elm Street when I was a kid, right next door to a big, scary house. Having said that, you can imagine why I never got into those movies… But it does beg the question, what was the scariest dream you ever had?
I dreamt I was married to Kathy Griffin and she just didn’t stop talking. Ever. And then my head exploded.
Scariest dream ever. And 100% not a lie, either.

Well, for halloween this year I’m thinking of going out trick or treating in a crazy elaborate costume that hides my true age. Seeing as how I’m well over trick or treating age, I want to fool people into thinking I’m some crazy kid. Plus, free candy, boo ya! I’m also seriously considering going to this http://www.valleyoffear.com . It’s some huge haunted house/hayride/corn maze in bucks county PA and it has a pretty good website.
I had this one dream one time that I was chasing these little kids from robbing a gap store. I chased them through these caverns and stuff and eventually we got to a field. On the other side of the field was a wooded area and as I saw the kids approach the wooded area from the other side, I saw a couple of the trees getting knocked over and the kids looking at what was coming with awe. It was this jacked mother on a huge crane wearing kickass sunglasses and a bulletproof vest that had painted on the front "The Suburban". He then proceded to ruin thier shit by hitting them with the crane. By the way, did I mention this was the most badass dream I ever had?

Watched GHOULIES I and II this morning thanks to the double feature from Netflix. I think the sequel was better (which is rare as we all know).
Getting into the HALLOWEEN spirit myself. Bought some cheap whatnots at the Dollar Store yesterday and watched TREEHOUSE OF HORROR 2 and 3 earlier this week.
I like how on the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET collector’s DVD it states that part 2 is essentially (albeit unintentionally) a metaphor for homosexuality. Once one thinks of the movie in those terms, it makes a lot more sense. Watch it and you will see it. Either that or you can wonder why everything bursts into flames in that movie (???).

Right now, I’m so tired, I’m not thinking of what I’m doing tomorrow, much less next month. I’m trying to find a job doing something I enjoy more and gives me steadier hours than working in a grocery store in a town that people think only exists in the summer. The grocery store I currently work at is going to be torn down in about three weeks. Yes, it does need to be replaced and it’s supposed to be done in May, but it’s going to be a pain transferring to an off-island store (I can’t afford a car) and trying to haul all my groceries home on my bike or the bus this winter. If I’m going to leave this store, I might as well get out all together. I’m just having a hard time finding a job as a writer or an editor or a receptionist or a secretary - seems people have friends and reletives to do those jobs.

Hmmmm, just checking in and I guess it’s going to be a sleeper tonight.
MATT and whoever else, I forgot to mention that I found a 1990 DICK TRACY magnetic facial hair toy at the local Dollar Store. It is from 1990 and is Disney authorized and everything. Not bad for a dollar but the original asking price was 2.19. No wonder it took 15 years to sell. I also got the Halloween stuff. Are you guys familiar with the toy MUTANT FREAKS? Looks like good stuff. If you want to see pics (for whatever reason), click the name.
What about John Carpenter? That whole bleak, falls eason light all his movies are shot in in Halloween to me. I have to watch some Season of The Witch now…"2 More Months Till Halloween…SILVER SHAMROCK!!!!!"

Dammit. I’m actually doing stuff for once and miss an attempt to have a Bill & Ted discussion. I am seriously disappointed with myself. Again, happy belated B-day to the man himself. Kyle, you cannot call yourself a Bill & Ted fan without having seen Bogus Journey.
STATION!
See, if you’d seen it you would have totally got that. The box set’s first printings apparently had a phone sex number mixed into the box art. For once, already owning something has cost me. I could have had one of those fine pieces of rare Keanu merchandise. But no, I’ve owned B & T for years and haven’t bought it yet. Grrr.
I recall Keanu saying he was willing to do 3. Trilogy here we come. Not like Alex is doing anything. Wait, he’s doing a biopic on somebody, right?

They were showing Nightmare 1, 2 and 3, back-to-back, on Movie Greats a day or two ago…How convenient.
Anyway, I never noticed before, nor got, what was up with those ‘whale songs’ in the background in 2. Maybe some people think ‘whale’ when they think Freddy…I dunno. I can definitely remember it being used during the ‘final battle’ where whatsername (Meryl Streep? Heh) kisses Freddy/Jesse (Fresse? Jeddy? I prefer Jeddy).
Do they talk about the music at all on the DVD?
I had to make sure I didn’t dream that up, so if you go here, and click on 12 (Sjports Attack/Threatening Angela), you can hear some whale action. The whales kick in around 12secs.
Enough about whales though, I love when Jeddy busts out of the door and disappears just before the pool massacre, and you see all those dudes kinda crab-crouching towards the broken glass and stuff. It’s hilarious…especially this one dude’s face. You don’t see a lot of crab-crouching in movies these days and I think that’s a real shame.
And one last thing - I think the best character in that movie was the ‘Pool Negotiator’. I hope he got a medal of honour or something. At least mentioned in the local newspaper? I smell spin-off series for that guy, even if he’s dead.

"Look, just say a spanish word, and I’ll bring you something!"
My weirdest dream had me working on an ice cream truck, but it sold Italian Ices. And for some reason, Bill Clinton (the Darrell Hammond version on SNL, not the real thing) always wanted the blue ones, but not by ordering them, he tried to buy them while in several disguises, like the Trix Rabbit.

I cannot remember all of it, but I woke up in a dingy basement (that looked nothing like my own) with what seemed to be a pile of human limbs in a pile on a wheelchair, a half dead man in chains on a wall, and I noticed my legs had a shitload of what looked like cat scratches (I did have cats, and they weren’t declawed). The the walls began to shake, and I heared a voice repeating "This is not the true answer" in a satanic tone. Yeah, fucking freaky.

I must have some mental block for X-E on Saturday nights.
I was sooo bored and had nothing to do - do you think I remembered the Saturday Night Thread? Hell no.
Well, since the movie seemed to come on at 11:30, I had a new Inuyasha to watch anyhow.
I had a dream about Freddy once. It was pretty screwy. Started out I was outside at some funeral - it looked like something out of the "November Rain" GNR video, dunno why. Anyhow, Freddy jumps up out of this casket and starts chasing me. I make it back inside, to the kitchen, grab me a big ol’ butcher knife and when he comes tearing in, I stab him repeatedly in the chest. The dream skipped a little, and I was thinking, "Ok cool, I killed him, don’t have to worry about him anymore." and that’s all I remember.

I have been glued to the radio to hear all of my fave alternative songs from back in the day. Its nice to hear good rock on the radio again, well at least for this weekend. The worst nightmare I ever had (that I can recall) was from when I was in grade school.
I was with someone (I don’t know who) checking out a huge, beautiful empty house. It wasn’t old or ruined or anything like that, it was incredibly clean, like it was newly-built. It was made of wood and was unpainted on the inside, but it still had furniture (all unpainted wooden furniture). We had to go in through a front, ground floor window to the left of the front door, presumably because the door was locked. I wasn’t supposed to be there, I remember that.
As soon as I got through the window, a nearby phone rang. I answered it but I don’t really remember what the voice on the other end said. I think it might have been telling me to go to a certain parade that I witnessed later.
All at some point later in the dream (I remember it now as an immediate jump from the house to the parade but there was probably something in between) I was watching a parade and one of the floats had a person on it, burning alive. Well, it was either a skeleton to begin with or the person was so burnt they had no flesh left, but s/he was alive somehow, was being consumed by flames and was screaming in agony.
Either nobody else seemed disturbed by what was happening or this singular image was such an intense focus of my dream that everyone else had disappeared.
That is the worst nightmare (that I can rememeber) I’ve ever had.

Hey Matt,
I agree with what you had to say about the whole genie ordeal in Cereal Prize Project Group 14. I actually met Mark Waid (a well-known comic book writer from LA) yesterday (Saturday), and we were discussing how ideas are most successful when they aren’t so concerned with exactly what the audience wants. And that includes not taking concepts that others have thought of and coming up with our own version thereof. He used the example of TMNT. Eastman and Laird’s idea was rather experimental, but it was successful. And sure enough, there were those who tried to ride on that success with their own TMNT-like ideas, but who the Hell remembers them. I vaguely remember the likes of Biker Mice From Mars (and I do actually have a VHS from this series), but it is certainlynot as memorable as TMNT. Anyway, I find that I’m learning a lot about writing and the ideas that work, as well as the ones that don’t work, from your writing, Matt. Thank you.

Nate has learned one of the godforsaken truths about advertising and/or popular characters: If it’s worth doing, then it’s worth others overdoing. TMNT begat a bevy of fighting animals, MMPR set loose a legion of martial artists in spandex shows. The original Star Wars gave us cute robots, robots with british accents, "laser" swords, and scenes with crowds of weird aliens. Harry Potter is big right now, and look how many "Magic" shows are being made for kids right now, including a Super Sentai show in Japan! Just wait until X-E becomes popular and well-known around the world. Kids will want to be like Matt, Squee, Gabby, Gozer, Manimal, or, heaven forbid, yours truly! Time to stick my head back in the bucket again….

Sounds like someone is thinking merchandising…Although I must admit, I think the X-E action figures would be on every Christmas list but overlooked by parents opting instead for "traditional" toys such as Lincoln Logs, EZ bake ovens, etc. I for one look forward to joining the ranks of the "CLEARANCE" shelf.

Here goes:
Did you ever see that episode of "The Simpsons" when the Itchy & Scratchy movie came out, and Bart did something bad, and as a result wasn’t allowed to see it? Then at the end of the credits, they show in the future, Bart is a priest, and he and Homer are walking down the street and see that the movie is playing, and decide to see it, and it turns out to not even be all that good?
It’s sort of like that.
My dad was promising, promising, promising me that he’d take me to see it. I mean, this was my life. But I didn’t get in trouble. My dad, at the time somewhat of a holy roller, and especially protective of his kids, read a review of the movie. "They make a deal with the devil? There’s no way I’m taking you to see this now." And so it was. I’ve had the opportunity to see it a million times - and every time someone finds out that I haven’t seen it, they flip the fuck out like I just ran over their dog or something.
So why haven’t I seen it? I guess I’m just afraid that it won’t live up to my expectations. In my mind, this movie is like Citizen Kane - absolutely perfect in every way. And there’s no way I’m going to watch it and fuck that up. I mean, maybe eventually, but I’ll wait a little longer.
Now, if they decide to make a 3rd, I guess I’ll have to.

Calm down Kidney. It’s not that level of blasphemy. It’s a videogame. PS2 & XBOX. The ending had to be changed because well, letting Smith overtake you wouldn’t be a very satisfying video game experience (I know alot of people didn’t think it was a satisfying movie going experience either :P)
You can change Neo’s Path (e.g. you can go up to the roof of MetaCortex instead of letting yourself be taken in by the agents.) and the Wachowskis have written every alternate path and, obviously, the alternate ending.

You lost me after XBOX. I really don’t know anything about the Matrix. I watched the first one all messed up on something or other, and never saw the other two. Saw one section of the Animatrix, but again, I must have blanked out all the details.

Always glad to spread the gospel
It’s finally giving me an excuse to get a PS2. And hey I can pick up Enter the Matrix and Constantine for like 12 bucks apiece. Rock!
So, personal distaste for sci-fi, specific hatred of Matrix or Keanu, or just not interested? Much like Star Wars geeks, Redpills always wonder why people don’t care for what they believe to be the greatest thing ever.

I like sci-fi, I like Keanu…I don’t know. I think it has to do with all the hype surrounding the franchise, and that, before I even saw it, I had heard that you have to watch the movie at least twice to understand what’s going on. It’s like it was implied that wyou wouldn’t know what the story was until you watched it again, kind of like that.
So the storyline never quite became clear to me, and thus I never watched the sequels.
And, no offense, people do seem to kind of obsess about it. Much like the Lord of the Rings movies. In fact, I’ve never seen any of those either…so maybe that drives me away from the Matrix as well.

I really need to learn to come back here more often to read as things go on. As for the Matrix, I absolutely loved the first movie, and I thought that Revolutions would have been a great film if it WASN’T part of the series, but Reloaded was just so God awful that I wept throughout it. Then again, I spent my time counting light bulbs on the ceiling during Revolutions…
That’s beside the point, though, as I have no point to make. I just wish Twin Peaks season 2 was out already. I just started re-watching season 1 and I forgot all about the uber-cliff hanger of doom finale.
Also, this movie I just got Kibakichi is the most ridiculously hilariously bad movie ever. It’s like Samurai Teen Wolf.

I’ve gotten kind of sick of NoES II it’s been played to death in various rotations of the entire Starz/Encore channel line up the last few months. Its funny tho every time I do see it I get flashbacks of the first time I watched it.
I was maybe 7 or 8 at the time being babysat by my older sister who was 13 at the time and she had her best friend over. Those 2 were positively OBSESSED with the nightmare flicks (and ironically enough since someone brought it up the sleepaway camp flicks too lol)
They decided to pop NoES II into the VCR. I being 7 got scared and her friend let me sit in her lap….well at some point she got the bright idea to try to scare the shit out of me so she starts doing her best imitation of Jesse during his freddy transformation. She wraps one arm around me and put her right hand to my face. The bitch even had just enough dirt under her nails to convince me of the possibility that she was gonna sprout claws. She then muttered something in the best freddyesque voice that a 13 year old chick could muster at which point I screamed, bit her forearm so she’d let me go.
I ran through my rents bedroom locked the door behind me then into their adjacent bathroom and locked that too. I stayed in there for hours till my rents finally came home and my dad jimmied both door open with a flathead screwdriver.
My sister got grounded for a month as a result and her friend was forbidden to come over for months up until they both apologized to me for it.

Is Matt looking forward to A Sound of Thunder because he heard it’s bad and he loves bad films?
Late August is a dumping point for bad films, and this was released as late in August as possible, with no advance screening for critics. Its Rotten Tomatoes rating isn’t very good either.
Kind of a drag…unlike all other movies about the consequences of time travel that stem from it, this was based on the Ray Bradbury original. Bradbury even had a hand in the film. And it turned out bad.

The original Matrix is phenominal. Nothing could have followed that up and lived up to it. That said, I liked Reloaded a lot, but I was also disappointed in Revolutions. Half of it (the Zion half) I loved, and the other half felt really flat. This is going to sound odd, because the whole thing was 3 movies long, but overall Revolutions feels… very rushed. The Animatrix was great.
Enter the Matrix is worth about $10, if that. The extra back story is cool but the game itself is obviously really rushed and ultra bland after about 10 minutes of play. The driving levels are among the very worst I’ve ever played. But I’m glad I played through it with both characters.
I’m not sure I like that we’re going to be able to play as Neo. That just seems like a little much. I’ll probably play the game when it comes out, but I don’t really like the idea. Changing the end kind of bothers me too, but I can see why they would have to do it.

Were they zombies? I remember that they were undead, but that’s the only ep of that show I ever watched and I’m getting it all mixed up with Bordello of Blood and From Dusk Til Dawn.
I refused to watch Matrix for a long time, but I enjoyed Reloaded and the Animatrix (which is way better than anything they came up with in the movies IMHO) had me convinced that they were really gonna bring it together for a big payoff at the end of it all. I don’t think they quite managed it, though.

Speaking of Back to School, it was filmed here in good ol’ Madison, WI on campus. It’s kind of funny to watch it and see places that I used to go every week. Of course, I don’t live or work in NYC like Matt does, so since about 95% of all movies are set in NYC it’s probably not the same for them.

Oooh I’ve never seen this version before (the Hulk Hogan one)…now I know that the correct phrase is gremsters. What’s the story with the DVD set, which version does it have?
Don’t know which version is on the DVD set, but I sure enjoy Hulk making a mess with the popcorn and soda better than John Wayne shooting the Gremlins.
And for the record, canned food and shotguns are a great stock tip… no matter what the source.
Mr.Boligarky is right. There’s always gonna be nutty survivalists.

The Gremlins DVD has BOTH versions of the scene! One in the film (the theatrical version) and the other version is included as a supliment.

Damn this site is awesome. I was wondering if you’ve ever covered The Barbarian Brothers! Those guys were awesome. I remember them making a movie where they were truck drivers and were superstitious. Classic 80s. I don’t know if you’ve seen the article by Rob Bloom or not but he’s written a funny tribute to the Barbarians at http://www.robbloom.com/creative/barbarian.htm

Speaking of Nightmare, Amazon just released the boxed set for $42! The cheapest I’ve seen it in a retail store is in the neighborhood of $75+. Just in time for Halloween, enjoy!!

Starwenn, you live in Rio Grande, right? I live almost an hour from there in Little Egg Harbor, Ocean County (NOT Egg Harbor, Atlantic County!). I’m looking for job too. Communications is hard to crack when you live in the Philadelphia area. Seems I don’t wanna go work in New York (2 hour commute on NJ Transit bus). I’d rather commute 70-90 minutes to Center City to work.
And yes, people have family to those kind of jobs you explained.
I feel your pain.

Oh yeah. My *Bad Dream*.
I wound up in an episode of Quantum Leap I watched on October 29,2001. The reason I remember the date was that the Halloween episode aired on October 30, and no ep aired on Halloween.
The episode was "Shock Theater" (last ep of the 3rd season). Sam loses his memory of everything and starts re-living prevous leaps as the people he replaced in those leaps. He talked like them, acted like them, and even walked like them. Creepy as anything. Problem was, because he mesons and neurons were whacked out, he began losing contact of Al. Al starts fading until he’s pretty much gone. Figure out for yourself how it ends. Trust me, it went on for 2 more seasons, so the ending couldn’t have been horrible.
Anyway, the dream. Instead of it being Sam, it was ME. Problem was, I just was suffering from a worse case of amnesia after the shock treatment than Sam suffered in the pilot episode. Couldn’t recall a thing. At least Sam knew his first name. Anyway, Al kept disappearing on me. I kept freaking out. I even started crying like Sam did in the episode–except I was REALLY crying!!!!!!! This turmultuous nightmare lasted a good 2 hours before I woke up scared to death. It felt like it really happened, except it could NEVER have happened. The situation never even existed.
Moral of the story–DO NOT watch "Shock Theater" with all the lights out at midnight. If you do watch it at midnight, KEEP THE FRICKIN’ LIGHTS ON!!!!!!!!
By the way, I have watched it since. In broad daylight. It is a really superb episode.
