08/30/2005: Tuesday Update?!

I’m getting pretty tired of seeing the blog updated only during the weekends, so I can imagine how some of you might feel. So look! Tuesday update! Don’t really have much to say, but…TUESDAY UPDATE! Oh yeah, I updated the Kool-Aid Section with a shortie on Kool-Aid Kool Pumps, a Sharkleberry Fin-flavored treat offered at Burger King restaurants in 1991. TUESDAY UPDATE!

I hate to be a redundant broken broken record record, but I’m reallllly getting psyched for the Halloween season. I do this to myself every year. Trust me, it’s a lot different when your holiday seasons are spent writing about holiday seasons everyday. I’m toying with the idea of doing the Halloween Countdown every other day this year, but I hate to break tradition like that. We’ll see how it goes. Actually, this is a good question to ask — which would you prefer? Updates every other day, or updates on every weekday with the weekends off? Perhaps the latter makes the most sense. It would be ideal for me to have Sats and Suns to write the following week’s worth of entries. It’s a lot to do in a weekend, but I’d rather have the extra time and have them come out the way I’d like than write them all when I get home from work. We’ll see. I may still end up doing them everyday, because in my mind, that’s the tradition and it should stay. Especially because I’ve already collected better loot for this year’s extravaganza than the past two years combined.

Also on that note, I may need a good hand to help out with a few graphics for this year’s Countdown. Nothing too fancy, but if you’ve got serious skills, send me an e-mail. You’ll need to be able to do stuff as funky as what’s on the main page of the site. Haven’t thought about what this would pay. Not much. Consider it a labor of love.

Surrrrvey Sez! If you could only have one candy bar for the rest of your life, what would it be? I’m going with Snickers.

Discussion Thread: 156 comments

Continuing the Halloween prep discussion, does anyone have any ideas on what we could do with the blog during October? (I mean, aside from the obvious surveys, which are nice, but it’d be good to mix things up.)

This’ll sound lame, but it’s really no lamer than a Saturday Night Thread: I was thinking maybe everyone who was around on a particular night could watch the same horror flick while posting in the blog. The thread wouldn’t necessarily have to be all about the movie, but it’d just be the background deal for everyone. And instead of having everyone dig out the same DVD, we could just pick shit off of television.

We’ll see. Maybe worth a shot.

You know it’s funny, but I’ve already been watching shows cause of other people here on saturday nights. sounds great to me…lets hear it for a critters marathon.

1)Heath or 100,000 bar all the way.
2)Write whenever you dang want. Your providing free entertainment for 1000s of us. Whatever you decide, we can deal with it as it’s still a gift.
3)Good idea, by why relegate it only to horror flicks? You could do this anytime (not just October).

Good point. Anything decent on this Saturday? :)

Elm Street 2 and 10:35 sounds like a good choice!

Freddy Kreuger deserves a cartoon. Sorta like the Cryptkeeper one, but a late night HBO kind of thing. The "Freddy’s Nightmares" syndicated show was ok, but an animated series would rock, shock, and punch you in the jock.

Ghosted by kingklash @ 09/01/2005 12:16 PM EDT

Hah I had to restrain myself from doing the "100th post" thing cause I was afraid someone would post while I was composing
Which Max channel is Freddy playing on? As a west coastie I’d be playing catch-up but I think it’s a great idea. Someone should check the network lineups for the cable challenged.

Shit, forgot about the time differences. Is there anything good on at a universal time? :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/01/2005 3:26 PM EDT

kidneyboy, the name of the song you were referring to is called "Manna Manna" (i’m 99% sure that’s the right title…please correct me if i’m wrong fellow XE’ers)

As for the chocolate bar…I think I’d have to go with either a Mars bar or Twix…cause ya can’t go wrong with either of them :) As for the updates Matt, I think like someone else said, you should have fun with it…so update whenever you feel the need to…cause us loyal XE’ers know you’re busy and all that…and we do have a lot of patience…even with things that never did have a conclusion *cough* Chia Plot *cough, cough*

Ghosted by Jabo @ 09/01/2005 3:34 PM EDT

I think you should do a couple of no-prize MS Paint "contests", either asking for straightforward renditions of specific frames or scenes from horror movies (perhaps revolving around themes like "Your favourite scene where the cool jock or popular girl gets killed.") or putting characters and/or situations from horror films in a different context (i.e. "Put your favourite horror characters in your favourite cartoon.").

Also, I’m not asking you to bend over backwards to accomodate Canadian readers, but, for the "live" horror movie blog posting, if you do that, it would be cool if, just one time between now and October 31st, you can pick a film that’s being aired on an American cable channel that Canadians, or at least those of us who aren’t breaking the law prohibiting having grey-market subscriptions to DirectTV, can actually watch on Canadian cable/satellite TV services, like TBS or Spike TV.

Matt, my vote is for Mon-Fri updates. Mainly because I read X-Entertainment at work and look forward to the daily distractions.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

Anyone else seen the new adult swim commerical where the kid becomes InuYasha? What was the chick in the black leather? spandex? latex? suppose to be?
I want into that party.
As for the movie start the blog when the movie starts in the east coast and just let it roll across country. might not be able to watch it all at once, but we can all talk about it all night.

I’m all for the horror movie idea. I haven’t seen many horror flicks (though I suppose I really should have). As it stands I’ve only actively watched and enjoyed Mr. Zombie’s fine work :) Honestly can’t recall seeing any of the classics or classic series. I’m such a loser. Guess I’ll go watch She’s All That or something now :P

Kneg, Kneg, Kneg. I’m sorry, but House of 1000 Corpses was effin’ terrible, man. Also, according to my sis, Sid Haig is a really shitty tipper (4ยข!)
(He’s our local resident celeb, along with Micky Jones, who you’ve seen as "biker dude" on every sitcom ever. Dude’s even in the Saved by the Bell wedding movie!)

My fave candy bar is no longer being made or at least not being distributed to northeast ohio was Bar None by Hershey. It had chocolate wafers, chocolate cream, covered in chocolate and topped with nuts. I don’t understand why they got rid of it…it makes me very sad.

Ghosted by phunqsauce @ 09/01/2005 7:15 PM EDT

My favorite candy is still Sour Candy Belts, but if it had to be chocolate I’d have to go with a Wonka bar.Yes,they actually make those.Theyr’e milk chocolate with tiny chunks of graham crackers.Best chocolate bar ever.

Sure Matt, lead me on for oh so long, making me believe that I just need to check in on X-E on a weekly basis, and WHAM, a huge Tuesday Melvin.

Anyways, um…Twix if I’m allowed to dunk them in chunky peanutbutter, weekdays are cool, and I wish I had tv to watch. Not that I’d be able to have fun w/ Freddy anyway, but at least I could catch up on the latest German politics. I’m crapping my pants with excitement for the countdowns because I only found X-E early in January of this year. Lucky me.

I hate posting again like this, but I forgot. One of the most delicious candy bars I ever ate was one my mom sent me while I was in Peru. It was milk chocolate from Isreal (of all places?) and it had Pop Rocks in it! To top it all off, she found it at Big Lots. I know that at some time later in my life, I will do a home made version, and it’ll disappoint me.

Ghosted by Mad Cow @ 09/01/2005 7:58 PM EDT

I cant say for sure what my favorite candy bar would be. I geuss maybe a snickers or baby ruth, some crappy american candy.
I remember my mother brought home some chocolate from germany once and it tasted like cheap milk chocolate. But for some reason it had this soapy chemicale taste to it. It was weird. Also matt i think you should stick with weekend (fri-sat-sun)Or so updates. It would give you time to think about what you wanto talk about and such. I dont know im not good at these things.

No, I’m sorry Squee. I adore House. I’m all for tipping fairly (I overtip when I can), but Captain Spaulding is immortal, if just to me. I love Devil’s Rejects even more than House. I wish it could have been a trilogy, and maybe it can (see my uber-optimistic post in the spoiler thread).

Remember, I live a life of Controversy. This is what I do. Revolutions is the best Matrix, High Fidelity is better than Say Anything, etc. etc. You know the drill.

"For the love of Jane Russell’s big fat horses ass on toast, stop ringin’ that g**damn bell!! We-ell, sh*t the bed!"

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/01/2005 9:12 PM EDT

Kneg,
I’m always pleased to hear others praising "House" and "Rejects" since what I normally hear from most people concerning those films is rancor and disgust. I thought that each film was outstanding in a way that only a film directed by a man obsessed with Frankenstein and serial-killers could be. For my money, the best line of any film of 2005 can be found in "Rejects" when Otis, after poking his nine-millimeter pistol down into the panties of a terrified, middle-aged female hostage, wonders aloud if her vaginal moisture will "rust the barrel". HI-larious.

Kidneyboy–did you ever see the Muppet show sketch w/the forest animals singing the song "Stop"???

They were being hunted and were singing it quietly, and every gunshot started that chorus "Stop children/what’s that sound?/everybody look what’s goin’ down…" Is it me, or is that really DEEP for a Muppet Show skit? Quite impactful.

If anyone hasn’t seen it, it’s on one of the Best of DVDs– Bob Hope, George Burns, and Dom DeLuise. It’s in the 3rd ep, which is Bob Hope. It is so not Muppet-like, and I felt kind of humbled after seeing it. really good though.

Ghosted by Allison @ 09/02/2005 12:06 PM EDT

Also, wasn’t "Hawaiian War Chant," from the Muppet Show? It was in my dance recital in 6th grade, and a friend told me it was a Muppet Show song. I can’t describe how it goes, but I was told about a rock that sings in the foreground.

The horse Bob Hope rode on in "Don’t Fence Me In" was wearing sneakers. I think they were New Balances.

Also, Miss Piggy singing "Cuando La Gusta," was classic, and pretty much paved the way for Scott Bakula to sing it on "Quantum Leap" years later.

Ghosted by Allison @ 09/02/2005 12:10 PM EDT

I’ll admit, 1000 Corpses isn’t completely without merit. Rancor and disgust are good words to describe how you feel watching it, though. I couldn’t stomach seeing Devil’s Rejects.

TWIX Cookies & Cream bars, they were out in the early 90s and were the shiznit – used to freeze ‘em and eat ‘em up like there was no tomorrow!

as my favourite candy bar, i gotta say tupla, a finnish candy bar that i ate a few(hundred) when i was in finland seeing my cousin. Finland is a pretty nice place actually. After all the stuff i had heard about finland i was like oh my god, but since it was my cousins birthday i had got to visit her. It was really fun, but everything is pretty expensive there, but i got a new nokia really cheap there

Wow, I totally forgot about foreign candy bars. Probably the best thing I ever had was an Irish chocolate bar. No idea what the name was but I seriously dug into my roomate’s supply of them and was upset when her family in Ireland stopped shipping them. Or maybe she just started hiding her candy supply on me!

Little brother, who loves House of 1000 Corpseseses, is doing a Monkey a Day for this month. Good warm-up exercise for whatever our Fearless Leader, spinning cog in the Viacom machine, and champion of his local Naked Crisco Twister/Full-Contact Jenga League has in store for October. How about a X-E Movie-of-the-Month Club? Come up with a flick or two for us to hunt down and watch, then have a weekend thread for ripping it to bits.

Priscilla Barnes: Three’s Company, Mallrats, and Devil’s Rejects. That’s quite a resume, don’t ya think? I’m sure some will say I left something out. Correct me if you feel the need :P

And now for something completely different: Happy 41st to Keanu!!!

I doubt there will be a way to fight the whole time zone thing with our movie watching and such, Matt. Thought for some reason my TV says that Nightmare 2 is at 11:45. Maybe Digital Cable is trying to balance things out? If so, than Nightmare 2 might be all go.

As for candy bar: I’ll go with the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. I can’t get enough of them, ever. But, if you can go with seasonal treats: I’d survive on the regular Cadbury egg.

Ghosted by AJ @ 09/02/2005 4:24 PM EDT

Does the time zone thing really matter that much? It’s not like our movie conversation would be limited only to the precise showtime.

here’s a suggestion for the halloween blog: what if people were to post info about halloween events in their area (ghost tours/haunted houses/movie revivals, etc)?

Ghosted by consulatsunset @ 09/02/2005 8:14 PM EDT

I definitely think one of those
"movie of the month" things are a good idea. Can’t be any of that hard-to-find gems though. the video store I used to work at doesn’t have alot of the good stuff anymore–unfortunately, it didn’t rent, and it got pulled for sale. And I refuse to go within inches of Blockbuster, cause I worked for a mom-and-pop competitor (and they were better!)

Ghosted by Allison @ 09/02/2005 8:19 PM EDT

Well I gotta give it to Reese’s big cup… a Hess station near me sells them in "Big packs" – two King-size packs… that’s a frigging meal right there.

I wonder why the reeses peanut butter always tastes so much better then any other PB – even the chunky kind!

My friend once invited me to share in the combininging of sugar and peanut butter and ingesting the resulting mixture. In ended up very similar to the elusive Reese’s peanut butter, which makes sense, of course, though it’s perhaps too obvious to think of without actually making it yourself.

By the way, I’m disappointed that I’ve never seen this in one of those MadLib books that the school bookfairs always sell for outrageous costs, but never appear in real bookstores: "My _______ once invited me to share in the combininging of ________ and ________ and ingesting the resulting mixture."
