08/30/2005: Tuesday Update?!

I’m getting pretty tired of seeing the blog updated only during the weekends, so I can imagine how some of you might feel. So look! Tuesday update! Don’t really have much to say, but…TUESDAY UPDATE! Oh yeah, I updated the Kool-Aid Section with a shortie on Kool-Aid Kool Pumps, a Sharkleberry Fin-flavored treat offered at Burger King restaurants in 1991. TUESDAY UPDATE!

I hate to be a redundant broken broken record record, but I’m reallllly getting psyched for the Halloween season. I do this to myself every year. Trust me, it’s a lot different when your holiday seasons are spent writing about holiday seasons everyday. I’m toying with the idea of doing the Halloween Countdown every other day this year, but I hate to break tradition like that. We’ll see how it goes. Actually, this is a good question to ask — which would you prefer? Updates every other day, or updates on every weekday with the weekends off? Perhaps the latter makes the most sense. It would be ideal for me to have Sats and Suns to write the following week’s worth of entries. It’s a lot to do in a weekend, but I’d rather have the extra time and have them come out the way I’d like than write them all when I get home from work. We’ll see. I may still end up doing them everyday, because in my mind, that’s the tradition and it should stay. Especially because I’ve already collected better loot for this year’s extravaganza than the past two years combined.

Also on that note, I may need a good hand to help out with a few graphics for this year’s Countdown. Nothing too fancy, but if you’ve got serious skills, send me an e-mail. You’ll need to be able to do stuff as funky as what’s on the main page of the site. Haven’t thought about what this would pay. Not much. Consider it a labor of love.

Surrrrvey Sez! If you could only have one candy bar for the rest of your life, what would it be? I’m going with Snickers.

Purplegirl: Sounds like you’re describing something that is still being made here by Blue Bunny. It was either strawberry or chocolate ice cream on a stick that had something in the center ans is coated in those crunchy bits. Wish I knew what it’s called.

I hate to be a conformist, but Snickers all the way. That’s mainly because they don’t make Bar None anymore. I’m not much of a candy eater, and I appreciate chocolate bars that aren’t sickeningly sweet, or at least have enough stuff in them to create a complex flavor. My three runners up? Mounds, Pay Day, and Chunky.

Purplegirl, I absolutely know that ice cream. Good Humor makes them (Chocolate Eclair and Strawberry Shortcake respectively). Cute story – when I was in middle school, I’d never had a strawberry one. My school didn’t sell them, but the elementary school did. One day my well-intentioned little sister got some money and decided to buy me one and keep it in her bag all day long until she got home (plus the 90 extra minutes it took for me to get home.) To its credit, the thing was completely melted and not a drop got out of the wrapper. She felt so sad that I refroze it and ate it. It actually still tasted pretty good.

Hey Matt,

Guys and Gals of XE please pray for all of the people displaced by the hurricane. It is worse than what you see on TV. I live in the north part of the state and the number of people that have evacuated here is astounding. Me and the wife are going to volunteer time and resources for the next few weeks to do what we can. Please pray for us all.

On another note, I am now jacked about Halloween, like you Matt, I live and die for Oct. 31. I have spent the better part of the summer after work and weekends building huge props and getting ready to make those kids earn their candy as they enter my grave yard.

Also, snickers is the best all time but twix have to be a close second!

I’m one for the weekends off routine. Then, Mr. C can just come up with Hallow-themed Saturday Survey questions for us.
Count me as seconding the love for Zero, the original "Inside-Out Candy Bar." Of course I hope the question means that it would be the only obtainable confection for the remainder of my lifespan. Otherwise, it have to be one hhuuuuugge Zero bar to last the rest of my days.

I’m not a huge candy bar eater, but I’d have to go with Coffe Crisp as my number one choice. So I guess I’m another person who’s in the minority. Hey, I’m unique! ;) As far as the updates go, I vote for the weekends off option. That way we have something to look forward to each weekday, and can then do our own thing on the weekends.

I’d be happy with updates every other day since a) I work full time in NYC as well and don’t want to look at a computer screen when I get home and sure you feel the same way and b) sometimes I don’t get to your site everyday anyway so then I have a backlog of countdown days to go back to…BUT this is just my opinion and do whatever’s best for you…and regarding the survey? Nestle’s Crunch or Mr. Goodbar

The best candy bar ever is Hershey’s Symphony with Almonds and Toffee Chips. Not the little ones, the HUGE ones that are the size of like 5 normal bars. It’s even better straight out of the freezer and smashed into little crunchy, frozen bits. Aww yeah.

Have to go with Snickers as well. It’s got everything you could possibly want in a candy bar, but it is by no means a "jack of all trades, master of none" situation. Snickers has got everything, but it’s a GOOD everything.

You know, I put WAY too much thought into it, and I can’t think of a better "deserted island" candy bar than Snickers. It’s got it all. Peanuts, chocolate, caramel. I do like my variety, but if it’s gotta be just one, you’ve got to go with ‘ol reliable.

Your (Halloween – Thanksgiving – Christmas) run is the time of year I most look forward to logging on to X-entertainment. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in and suggest that you update every day. It doesn’t have to be a full article – if you are short on time – just post some spooky music – or a scary story. Anything. It will be worth it. Thanks.

I gotta go with the Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. You get two in every pack, so you can always save one for later if you didn’t inhale the first one. Sometimes I get all Hannibal Lechter with it and cut the peanut butter cup like a little pie and eat it slice by slice.

I’ve tried the inside out ones, and the balance of the tastes is wrong for me.

The Big Cup I like, but they only give you one of those.
It’s my theory somehow they merge them, with MAD SCIENCE that Humans were not made to mess with. But I know there are two peanut butter cups in every big cup. I can feel it. It’s a gut hunch.

As for Halloween updates, you don’t have to do them every day.
It’s not a job. This is for fun. If you want to put a little something up every day and take the weekends off, that’s cool. If you want to just make a mega post on a Saturday or Sunday that’s fine, too.
If it’s not stalkery, let us know if you went to a haunted house or found a neat costume website. Or bought a dremel to carve a pumpkin or something.
Halloween rocks, and the season oughtta be two months long. Every year it’s like a race and I’m straining at the starting line for the pistol to go off.

JLAJRC, thanks for the link. I don’t think it ever occurred to me that I could ever have the chocolatey goodness as an adult (or pseudo-adult as the case may be).

Lori, your story about your sibling is classic.

And finally, while I’m being chatty, I agree that updates are precious and should be savored…unlike candy bars, which apparently we all wolf down like animals! I’m a big fan of the Reese’s Cup, as well as its sister, the Pieces. I also love Heath bars but they tend to get stuck in your teeth, and that always slows down the enjoyment factor.

I think Matt has decided but I like the idea of M-F with weekends off. For a CHOCOLATE bar to have with POP would have to be a Cadburys brand, Im thinking a Flake bar, they are the best when they are actually from England tho!
Oh and someone talked about Smarties bar, yeah I love smarties just in general better than M&Ms, makes me proud to be Canadian!

Ahoy there! I’d definitely go with ButterFingers. The way it sticks to your teeth oh god it’s orgasmic. And Matt, I know when the article premeired you probably got alot of email about this but back in 2000 or so you did something on ROTJ toys and said the Tie Interceptor was Darth Vader’s new fighter. It was a mass produced next generation Tie fighter. You can see several sqaudrons of em in the space battle. God I’m lonely.

I say do them on the weekdays, but reserve the right to do them on the weekends if you’ve got some extra cool loot you need to share.

Also, remember a few months ago when a bag of Tato Skins was shown (in upstate NY, I think). Anyway, I found some of those in a grocery store here in Stillwater, OK. So they either still make them, or I got one of the last remaining bags in the SW. Also I bought the "new" Jell-O Pudding Pops…it felt like grocery shopping with my mom when I was a kid!

Speaking of purple, I just tried the new Mountain Dew Pitch Black II and it’s pretty good. I didn’t find the original version to be that special, but the tang in this makes it pretty tasty.

I hope they bring back the Pepsi Holiday Spice but from what I hear I doubt it will happen. That was AWESOME.

Pitch Black II is very good. I bought it not expecting much but was convinced it was worthwhile after opening the bottle and getting that first grape whiff. I couldn’t drink it everyday but it’s a good seasonal thing.

Ok, I have no time to read allll those posts, like I’d normally do. I’m running on about 10 hours of sleep in the past 3 nights.

Candy Bar – Well, being vegan puts a damper on that, so I’ll answer it two ways. Before I was vegan, I would’ve picked a Hershey’s Symphony Bar, most likely. Purely delectable milk chocolate all by its’ lonesome, or with toffee and almond, I think. Now, the closest thing I eat to a candy bar is called a Luna Bar (Nutz Over Chocolate flavor, please!) They are really yummy, and good for you. :D

The BEST EVER Reese Cups were the ones that came in the 3 packs that you’d sell for school fundraisers. They seemed bigger, and way fresher – like a fancy, deluxe version of itself.

Well, that one’s easy: Orange Aero (which, I think, is officially called "Aero Orange"), the very special kind of Aero, which is a milk chocolate bar originating in Britain, with a bubble texture inside that they only seem to sell a couple of times a decade here in Canada (though it’s a constant in England). The orange version has a nice tangy (faux) orange flavour, and the bubbles are an eye-pleasing orange colour encased in a darker chocolate outer shell.

If anyone’s wondering what Smartie’s Bars are exactly, it’s a chocolate bar containing Smarties, but the British/Canadian Smarties, which are candy-coated chocolate buttons that are essentially like larger, flatter M&M’s. It’s got nothing to do with American Smarties, the chalky candy things in rolls, which are known as "Rockets" in Canada.

As for graphics, this probably isn’t what you’re looking for, but I doing drawings of London city street scenes, and, incongruously, the occasional movie-based MS Paint picture. I also, after a long hiatus, recently tried my hand at cartooning again, drawing this drawing of an obscure anime character (Natsumi Tsujimoto from You’re Under Arrest for those of you in the know) whacking that annoying "Mr. Opportunity" guy from the Honda Commercials in the nads with a baseball bat.

You know, tonight I sat down and tried to just do it all myself, and it hasn’t come out too bad, really. Brian’s busier than ever and won’t be able to handle it this year, but it looks like we’re safe. I don’t plan on revamping the main page entirely (for reasons that should be obvious to any longtime reader), but rather revamp the look of last year’s Countdown and add a section on the main page that links to it. So far, so good, but thanks as always, Steve!

How ARE those Reese’s Big Cups, anyway?

Regarding the Halloween Art schtuff, it’s definitely in top running to put an open call out for readers (well, readers of the blog, at least) to send in artwork to tag at the end of each Countdown entry. If not, there will definitely be a couple of dedicated days for it.

Just got the Muppet Show DVD, and I love the very firstest sketch, its that one "menominah" song. I feel like a moron because I don’t know the name of that song, and it’s been popping up in commercials and shit too! Can anyone enlighten me?
