08/14/2005: Ghoul-Aid and Friday the 13th: Part 2!
As mentioned in the previous thread, I went to the drug store today and found no less than Halloween Popcorn Balls. It’s starting, and I am thanking God. Let’s celebrate the upcoming unholiness by busting out the spookiest Kool-Aid of ‘em all — Ghoul-Aid! You may remember my 2003 attempt to recreate Ghoul-Aid using existing Kool-Aid flavors, but this time, it’s the real deal. It’s sweet, it’s black, it’s a Halloween mega attack.
But wait! There’s more!
I’ve mentioned the film often enough, so finally, here’s the skinny on Friday the 13th: Part 2, an idiotically wonderful movie that makes its way to my sensory organs at least once a week on average. It’s the first onscreen appearance of Jason Voorhees (as an adult, at least), and it’s amazing to see how much our pal changed through the years. Article covers my ten favorite things about the flick, from Jason’s house to the Pamela’s severed head. Enjoy.

I really need to watch these movies…does the dvd set include uncut gore because i’d be curiousto see exactly how bad it really is.
The DVD set includes a lot of cut scenes; there’s even a feature that lets you watch the for-movie and original cuts, splitscreen.

Woo-hoo! Halowe’en! As I posted in the last blog, before this one popped up, I am preparing to get some ‘Ween items as soon as possible. I gots two houses to set up this year. I wonder if there’s a video projector I can borrow. I might throw Vampire Hunter D or GhostBusters up on a wall or plastic sheet this year. As one of my favorite late night monster movie hosts used to say, "Keep America Strong, Watch More Horror Movies!"

IFC has been showing horror films the last couple of Saturdays. They showed the first Friday the 13th and Bloody Valentine last Saturday. Last night they showed April Fools Day and Humanoids from the Deep. Both were interesting.

Matt, you already my hero and all but if you make the music for the intro to part III available for download, you will be one step closer to living sainthood. That is probably some of my favorite music and would be great for Halloween in the classroom.

Glad to hear it!! It is definitely a get on your feet and dance kind of funk.
I forgot to mention (and I am 90% sure that I am right) that Roger Ebert included F13 pt. 2 in his book, I HATED THIS MOVIE (or whatever it was called). I thumbed through the book and he is such a coward. He takes on F13 part 2, JUDGE DREDD and CALIGULA as if they weren’t easy targets for criticism. You’re a film critic, step up to the plate and take on a "real" movie. Had to throw that in.

Good review. F13 Part 2 was always my favorite Friday movie. I just like the way they presented Jason in the film. Made him more human. No love for Crazy Ralph though? He’s pure money in the film. "I told the others, but they didn’t listen. You’re all doomed!"
I’ve got love for Crazy Ralph, but more like #15-20 range love.

F13 II has to be my favorite of the bunch too. if you ask me whyna’t really say, but there is jsut something about it that makes me like it more than the others. And wasn’t there a crazzy guy who knew jason was going to kill everybody in most of the F13 movies?

That’s very cool that they have the split screen option. I may just have to seek out these movies. The only one i’ve seen all the way through was the first one and it was on network television so it kinda sucked. I just remember the scene where Pam Voorhies gets decapitated was strangely edited. they basically showed it panned way to the left so all you could see was her arm flailing and the rest of her body out of picture. I hope that makes sense.
I felt my first twitchy yearnings for Halloween back in like February, but they’ve been hitting steadily over the last few weeks. I went to Target today specifically to see if any orange-and-black crap had started to displace the school supply bazaar, but no dice.
BUT
Inspired by my yearning, I did a quick Google search and came upon a link filled with product shots of their Halloween line from a few years ago, as well as some Halloween wallpaper designs and other junk, and it seemed to keep the couldron bubbling for today:

I’m sure nobody cares, but I’ve no where else to write this so I’m just going to relate a story of my child hood here that this has reminded me of.
Long ago, back before I became apathetic and lazy, one of my most strictly held traditions was an annual Halloween party, and to emphasize how important this was to me, well… hmmm, let’s just say it was really important.
Seriously, I (or more accurately, my mother) went all out every year with planning games, decorating, putting up lighting, and everything short of actually summoning real undead creatures.
The anticipation was so great that inevitably each year I would piss my mom the hell off by reminding her of it and trying to start sending off invitations in early September. And now I can read two Halloween articles at once on X-E when it’s only August.
Shit, I didn’t mean to make this so long, but damn, you have no idea how much this means to me. When I was a little kid it felt like every single company that advertised to kids would frighten up their commercials every October, our school would provide appropriate decorations and eventually celebrations, and every show that I watched had the requisite Halloween special.
I’m not really that much older now, but already it feels completely different. It feels like Halloween is some kind of antiquity, and it’s inaccessable to someone who’s as old as me. I might as well get a job in some office from 9:00 to 5:00 and celebrate it with nothing more than wearing a "spooky" tie (if I’m lucky) on the appropriate day. I don’t know what the Hell that meant, but oh well.
The point is, I owe an incredible amount to X-E for showing me that Halloween’s not dead. At least not as long as I have the internet.

has anybody mentioned the time jason appeared as a guest on the arsenio hall show? i was like 12 and it scared me to death. as i recall arsenio kept asking jason questions and jason just sat there being scary and not saying anything.
potential suggestion for future halloween discussion thread: really awesome haunted houses and hayrides and stuff in your area.

Speaking of everyone’s Obsession with Golden Girls/Golden Palace on here, Bea Arthur was one of the roasters on Comedy Central’s Roast of Pamela Anderson. She was by far one of the best ones, because she read some excerpts from one of Pamela’s books, where she wrote about a hooker named Star who got a job as a lifeguard on a tv show, and dated a rock star. She read probaby the most grahpic parts, and delivered it the way only she could.
Pam’s response to her at the end was just classic: "It DOES sound sexier in a man’s voice!"

Aaah, memories.
One night several years ago my sister (a HUGE slasher flick buff) and I watched good ol’ part two. The house was dark and quiet and my sister is notorious for being easily freaked out during these films…so I did the only reasonable thing and when she left the room for a drink, I crouched behind the couch, spread an afghan over the back, propped my head on it, and did the best "dead face" Pam Voorhees I could come up with. Scared the living bejezus out of her (I think there was Diet Coke in the piano as a result of her panic), and to this day all I have to do is bare my teeth at her to freak her out.

Ghosted by
gadgetsgirl @ 08/15/2005 4:27 PM EDT
Now that I think about it, earlier that night we had also watched part one, with my Dad sitting at his computer, playing solitaire. The computer was behind the couch my sister was sitting on and she got really jumpy, assuming he was going to scare her. Every time he stopped clicking the mouse, she’d freak and round on him. So finally he unplugged the mouse and clicked frantically while he crept up behing her…mayhem. It’s amazing the neighbors never called the cops.
I owe some of my best family members to the Jason series, apparently.

I’m about to feel like a complete nerd for posting this, but I must.
This is an actual theorization I have come up with after ‘multiple’ viewings of F13 Part 2.
I theorize that Jason’s mother was involved in some high-end voodoo shit. Raising the dead, possessions, demons, the whole lot. Jason’s basic immortality and dealing with Freddy–who’s also all Demony and dead too–seem to prove this.
‘But that’s obvious, O6!’ you say. You didn’t let me finish…
I theorize that in Part 2 Jason is actually attempting to do a voodoo reincarnation ritual to bring his mother back to life. I assume that his mother actually showed him how to perform this at some point during his childhood. The reason he has to kill the victims of the movie is, obviously, to use the bodies in the reincarnation, probably as some kind of messed up Leatherface-type thing.
So yeah–I think Jason was just killing people to get his mother back with supernatural wizardry. Now, obviously, they lost this transition in the newer movies where Jason just randomly punches people’s heads off for no apparent reason, but they seem to have brought at least some element of it back into the more recent movies.
Or I’m reading way too much into this crap.

Onslaught Six @ 08/16/2005 7:28 AM EDT
O.S. — that actually makes perfect sense, and is supported by all the wacky voodoo shit from Jason Goes To Hell.

I went to Tarjay to see if there was anything else I could get him, and I saw the day-glo box, which was screaming "BUY ME!" I hate when stuff does that b/c then I follow the command to "buy it." Yeah, "Bobby’s World" IS on DVD…not the whole series, but last summer while browsing the aisles in Best Buy, I saw "Bobby’s World: The Scratch N’ Sniff Episodes" which was like, 5 episodes picked by Howie himself. "Scratch and Sniff?" I asked? Well, needless to say, I bought it in a hurry. Okay, here’s the kicker: I get the damn thing home and open it, and out falls a small "scratch and sniff" card, with a picture of Bobby saying "Can you guess this smell?" So I scratched. And I sniffed. Know what the smell was? CARDBOARD. Freaking cardboard. It didn’t smell like anything…it was never supposed to! And I’ve hated Howie Mandel ever since…because that son of a bitch got one over on me…and there’s nothing I can do about it.

Onslaught Six,
I don’t know, man. I guess it’s possible but….
To me, Jason is just a normal killer in 2. Things don’t start getting out of hand (unrealistic) until part III when he really CANNOT be killed for ANY reason. I think the voodoo stuff was tacked on after the fact as an attempt to explain why this guy is indestructible. In F13 pt. 4, and HALLOWEEN II for that matter, the killer is definitively killed
(hence both F13 5 and HALLOWEEN III go into "new" directions). When Jason comes back in part 6 as a zombie, at least his superpowers(?) are understandable.
To be fair, I havent seen JASON X or FREDDY VS. JASON so maybe I am not getting the full picture…

Bobby’s World got me thinking about Beakman’s World, my favoritest show in the whole wide world.
Beakman is on DVD, but it’s a "Best Of" instead of actual episodes.

Here’s a bit of trivia for you Matt, Stuart Charno also had an extremely small role as Harrold "The Reptile" Sherbickle in "Just one of the Guys". He was the weirdo guy who was told to put his little lizard pet friend into his locker by the gym teacher and then proclaimed he couldn’t because the alligatots would eat him.

I love this flick ! Just like all other Jason movies. The best part was the end with Pamelas head.

Ass rockin’ review, Matt. Do more!
A weird thing I noticed on repeated viewing of the film: When Ginny is hiding from Jason under the bed in the cabin, a mouse scares her and she almost loses it. Well during that scene, a puddle of urine is made. We always thought Ginny pissed her pants, but then agreed it was the mouse/rat.

playing Resident Evil 4 reminds me of F 13 2 every time one of the psychotic bag head chainsaw villagers shows up least until they spew spanish gibberish anyway.
Ghoul Aid however must been one of those flavors that flew under my radar tho I’ve had Gatorade Black thunder which attempts the same flavor.
I almost made a teacher wretch in high school drinking black thunder I knelt next to the ajnitors mop bucket made it look like I was filling the bottle with gunk water and took a gulp…..I was a distrubed teen

Wow, man. I think we have the exact same taste in horror flicks. I totally loved this Jason movie as well, thanks for the awesome review. I always tell folks this and 4 are my favorites. Crispin Glover is so fuckin goofy in it, and his death cracks me up. If I ever meet him I’m going to call him Dead Fuck. Oh yah, and lil’ Corey Feldman is fun to point at.
"Let me run this through the ol’ computer… Yah, you’re a dead fuck!"
