05/28/2005: X-Entertainment in Stuff Magazine!

Working feverishly on many things at the moment, but wanted to mention X-E’s latest journey off the Internet. In the July issue of Stuff Magazine, check out the “Hit List” section for a nice little blurb about my Worst Game Room Ever article.

There’s a mildly interesting story attached to this. The magazine had contacted me months ago to be included, but the images in the article were too shoddy after what I did to ‘em to use in print. I didn’t have the originals. Fearing that I’d lose my shot to have 1/10th of one page in one issue of one magazine dedicated to something I wrote a year ago, I offered to recreate the picture they were after, wrongly assuming I had a volley of Ms. Pac-Man machines at my disposal. I didn’t. The only one I had access to was at an editing facility we use at work, so one day, I crept out for an hour, took the subway downtown, blasted into the facility with a digital camera, pleaded my case, took very odd pictures of their Ms. Pac-Man machine and ran back to the office with only minutes to spare before a pretty critical meeting, which I sat through sweating profusely. Thanks, Stuff Mag!

I loved that article! It’s good to see that Stuff decided it was worthy of inclusion.

Should I be alarmed that something I like is in the mainstream media? It usually doesn’t end well when that happens.

Matt, that game room article just kicked ass. No wonder Stuff wanted to publish it. Maybe they will publish that one about that creepy general store in upstate, that one was also great. Any trips planned for the future?

Stuff Magazine needs to get itself a new editor for that "Your" instead of "You’re"

The gameroom article was awesome. Trip reports are my favorite article on X-E….

They needed a hard copy for their article? They couldn’t just copy and paste the picture from the web? Aren’t most magazines nowadays put together digitally?

They needed the pic in high res. The pics used in the article were taken high res, but scaled down for the article. Didn’t have the originals, so they needed a new one.

Yeah, that article was some of your best work! I’m glad some magazine realized that.

Of course, being the giant dork that I am, I typed in the other address mentioned in the text, and that’s some freaky stuff.

If those are just ice cream stains inside the love tunnel, they’re stains that have been fermenting and cultivating other stains for decades. If they’ve somehow attained sentience, they might grab your hand and eat it.

Very cool, Matt. They could have easily put a near naked woman in its place, but there’s X-E instead. It’s a fully acceptable trade-off. Congrats.

Mara: I went to that site and…wow. A Tony Danza tribute page I understand. Even the Who’s The Boss blue van tribute page I would get.

I have always believed that X-E belonged in a soft core magazine.

Was always a big fan of the shitty game room. Wasn’t this around the time you did the article on that f’d up mini golf place that had the lion statue that sported a visible asshole?? Congrats Matt!!!!

Awesome! I LOVED that article- way to go, Matt! It’s so great to see you spreading out into Stuff, Toy Fare, Nickelodeon, etc. Soon, though, this website will become overcrowded with new adoring fans, and there won’t be as much Matt to go around.

Congrats on getting Stuff’d! With all the attention the place has been getting all of a sudden, Matt’ll have to put up a velvet rope across the main page. And a big, burly Bea Arthur (redundant, I know) letting only the elite and good looking in. Or we’ll have to register.

I think the $64,000 question is: did the Atlantic City Quality Inn make renovations or, at least, repairs to the game room after being so thoroughly embarassed by that article? I don’t know what the situation with Quality Inns is, whether each individual hotel is corporately-owned or a franchise, but, either way, there’s someone in charge of that particular location, and he or she doesn’t want that sort of publicity. Two months ago, I wrote an article in my blog complaining about several problems at a specific McDonald’s location (lack of trays every time I go there, lack of ketchup on a Saturday night, and two security guys who were blocking the entrance to the seating area just because they were having a chat), and, about two weeks later, I got what I believe to be a corporate "hit" from Google from someone at McDonald’s looking to see what people were saying about that specific McDonald’s location, and, the next time I went to that McDonald’s, everything I complained about had been rectified. I can’t prove that it’s simple cause-and-effect because of my blog entry, but I think it was at least a noteworthy coincidence, and my blog only has maybe a dozen or so regular readers, compared to hundreds of thousands of X-E readers.

If that article didn’t shame the Atlantic City Quality Inn into putting at least a little money into fixing the arcade machines (or adding new ones) and trying to get rid of the smell, I’m not sure that’s the sort of establishment I’d ever want to stay at, because the broken window theory can apply to hotels as well. I know that it’s just a games room, and, even in chic-er hotels, the games rooms don’t tend to get as frequent attention from the cleaning and maintenance staff as the restaurant or lobby or, of course, the hotel rooms themselves, but if the hotel management lets the room fall into a state of general disrepair, it reflects very poorly on how much they care about the upkeep of the hotel in general.

Well like everyone else on the site, I also send my congrats on the Stuff blurb Matt. Let’s just hope that if this causes Matt to become very popular, and brings more traffic to XE, that the regulars to the page will be first to get past the velvet rope. As for the list EMajorwitz…of course you belong! :) I just hope that one day I’ll be on the list…maybe if i posted more often….well until that day! To end this post….as a congrats to Matt…Chocodiles and Ecto Cooler for all!

Anyway, I was wondering about the bad-publicity effects of that article myself. It would be great to shame them into fixing it.

You contribute so many groovy articles for us to enjoy. I feel as though I should be making one for you though my talents would pale by comparison.

Hey, congrats! That must feel awesome when "outside" people take notice of the site, and love the articles enough to advertise them for free. I always feel a little tickle of pleasure (no, not that kind, dirty minds!) whenever I see the X-E icon heading articles over at Fark.

Hey, I made the VIP list, cool! I guess dumping my opinion and rambling about the nonsense of my life here has paid off.

Wow, an X-E VIP list. Erik and Kidneyboy (and I am sure a couple of others) definitely belong.
Maybe this will inspire Matt to do something that I always thought would have been funny: A "Meet Matt" contest a la "The KIDS IN THE HALL meet Paul Bellini Contest". The winner could stay in that Quality Inn in Atlantic City……

Pregnancy…It sure is nerve racking though. Germans record the pregnancy at during dates so when I say we are at Week 34 they are at Week 32. Really confusing. Plus, they want to monitor all the time now and my wife feels she is as big as a house. I never agree though.

I really dont have much more to add, but I wanted to say a congrats to you Matt!! Being in a mag is kick ass!

So, you’re naming the baby Brett? I like it! But then again, Bret "the Hitman" Hart is one of my absolute heroes.

And to answer a question from a previous blog about my Korean experience of seeing Episode III, YES- You really do get a FREE DRIED SQUID in a little box with every popcorn combo at the theaters here in Korea (just a baby one)….jeez, back home we used to get a free chocolate bar or gummi worms.

My best friend named his kid Brett, after Brett Favre. Yeah, being from Wisconsin, we name kids after da Packerss here, oh yah.

And a heartfelt "Thank You!" to all military peoples this Memorial Day. Starting with my Granddad, and through to my Sister (the one who died once already), and various relatives in between, I have known at least one person from every war since WWI. Even though I am at work today, we’ll be closing early to take some flowers to certain graves and appreciate our Freedom. Again, Thanks a lot, guys and gals!

Intresting fact: My wife’s great uncle was one of the flag raisers at Iwo Jima.

Well, Brett Favre was playing on the television when my wife came down to tell me "I suck" while holding the pregnancy stick. Her father’s name is David, but I play it off as naming him after David Carr as well. It is great too, I can have two favorite teams (Packers and Texans) and will only be in agony if they both make the Super Bowl.

Gotta love the Packers, they can’t leave because the city owns them. That is the best owner situation anywhere.

Funny you mention wrestling Muppetbaby…I originally wanted to name a boy Brock, but I don’t want a quitter. Doubtful my wife would have let me name him Hulk Hogan Majorwitz either.

Oh, and all of you still suck that you have and I haven’t seen Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

I used to adore Stuff but there was a definite drop in quality and I let my subcription lapse…obviously it’s back on the upswing if they’re featuring X-E. Hello to anybody just finding the site due to the article, and huge congrats for getting into the mag!
