The Revenge of the Sith Discussion Thread…

Consider the comments field for this entry your discussion thread for Revenge of the Sith. Those wanting to avoid spoilers should be careful while scanning through. I'll be seeing the flick tonight (passed on the midnight opener knowing that it'd require taking today off), and I can't wait. Three and a half stars from Ebert, fifty and a half stars from people who know who played the Wampa in ESB. Can't wait can't wait can't wait. Share your thoughts, anticipations and questions in the comments.

EDIT: Saw it last night. Didn't leave the theater knocked out, but it's grown on me overnight. Will have more to say on Sunday. Oh, those DVD contests? I got a shitload of entries, so let's make the cutoff Saturday, 11:59 PM for entries. Also, since I got waaaay more entries than I was anticipating (likely in the realm of 700 or so), I asked if the PR comp would mind supplying two of each set. So, there will be four winners total. :)

Well as can be said for all the prequels this one had great effects and bad acting. Of course most of the bad acting came from Anakin than anyone else. I do agree that a lot of the loose ends were tied up in a rushed kinda "what the fuck?" type of manner. The action was by far the best of all the movies. General Grievous wasn’t quite what i had envisioned him. A coughing robot??? I thought he’d be more bad ass. It was funny seeing Ian McDiarmid become a bad ass swordsman. I mean when he did that twisting jump and starting mowing down those jedi in the scene where they were trying to arrest him i almost shit my pants!! I give him kudos for being the best actor in this one cuz he really freaked me out (although I think he gave up his little "secret" to Anakin way too easily). Not much can be said about Padme for her acting was atrocious but I did like the first sighting of the famous hairstyle that Leia had in Star Wars and it was also interesting how Anakin approached her in a similar manner about ruling the galaxy as he did in the Empire Strikes Back with Luke (minus the I am your father line of course) Well enough of my yammering. I’m sure i’ve left out stuff but I must be going…….

it was fun

I thought it was a very great movie. Really, one’s just being silly if one doesn’t like it.

Not to offend anyone but I personally thought the last two Star Wars movies were nothing short of terrible. So my expectations were extremely low for part 3. I couldn’t understand for the life of me why anyone thought this one would be any different than the last 2. To my shock and amazment I actually liked this one. I thoight it was a fun movie. There was certainly some bad dialog and a little over (or under) acting. But there was nothing about it that really ruined it for me. It seems like everyone who expected it to be the greatest movie ever made was dissapointed. Funny how so many people had opposite reactions from what they expected to have.

phunqsauce, watch Clone Wars to see how trully bad ass Grevious is and why he was coughing in ep 3.

Browsing through previous comments I was pleased to find others who didn’t think this movie was so great.

On a PURELY ENTERTAINMENT level, without any thought of the other movies, or analysis of Lucas’ plots, I would agree that this movie is "good".

HOWEVER (scroll down to skip rant, otherwise read on for, what I feel, are valid points)…

Someone already mentioned it, but there were many aspects of the plot that were way over-forced, or just put in for "continuity’s sake". For example, Bail Organa talking to, "Captain Antilles, I’m placing these droids into your service. Have the protocol droid’s mind wiped." A practically pointless exchange, aside from explaining R2′s and C3PO’s exchange with Luke in ANH about who their true owner is. There were other examples such as this one which were thrown in for whatever purpose, and never completely explained (why was threepios mind wiped?) but i won’t go into that any further.

The lack of any…not even the SLIGHTEST BIT…on-screen chemistry between Hayden and Natalie P. is sooooo tiresome and horrid to watch. There was more chemistry between NP and Ewan McGregor in the seen where Obi-Wan is checking on her after she’s knocked unconscious!!!

I will admit that i liked Hayden’s character and acting more in this movie than the last. I credit at least half of his bad acting to bad writing. For example, when Padme says, "Hold me like you did back on Naboo." Gimme a break!!!

Someone mentioned before how they managed to ruin Darth Vader. "Noooooooooooo!!!" and the stumbling Nazi Frankenstein walk off of the op table. [shakes head] how could they do that to LORD VADER!?!? *sigh*

The plot advancement was choppy and ill-explained. I really felt like the whole thing wasn’t very well scripted.

Padme’s pregnancy advances quite rapidly. She’s not showing at the beginning, and by (almost) the end, she’s quite round…though it seemed as if the entire span of the movie was really only over the course of a few weeks…but that’s how it felt to me, not based off of any sound proof i can recall and present here.

Lucas…either give your ships artificial gravity or don’t. I don’t think a space cruiser that has been hit will "fall down" in space??? Maybe it’s the gravitational pull or something… i dunno… i won’t go more into it than that.

Greivous was a disappointment. Though i’ve only seen Part 1 of the clone wars. Maybe after i see part 2 i’ll understand more of why he was such a wuss in ep 3.

The last thing I’ll mention is the special effects. They were special. They were effects. They were numerous, and mostly very cool. However, as i watched the movie, i kept thinking "cool special effects". Initially that may not sound like a bad thing, but take this into account: When i watched the original trilogy, i don’t remember thinking "cool special effects"…i remember thinking "cool spaceships" etc. What I’m basically trying to say is that the effects were all too "cartoon-y" for me. There was a certain element of realism that was lacking. I understand that Lucas admitted that this was actually done intentionally to "re-inspire the old serial comics/novels" or some such nonsense. Again, not knocking them so much as making an observation.

Maybe my impression will change once i go see it again…maybe not. though, i’ll always be a bigger fan of the trilogy i grew up with.

I’ll end my post by repeating what i told my buddy as we walked out of the theater…

"I was entertained by the movie, but I didn’t really *like* it."

I thought this movie ruled. It is the most emotionally charged, violent, and badass star wars movie yet (and i say yet, as theres still plenty that can be done with the story). It was a 2 hour nonstop asskick fest from the opening space battle to the institution of order 66 to the way that anakin gets lit up at the end. it was insane. We knew that darth vader was a bad guy, but we never knew how much of a sick bastard he really was. Darth vader is fucked up!!

on a side note, my friend said that the fall of the republic wouldve been averted if the jedi offered a better health plan. anakin prolly just couldve gotten some counciling and maybe some prescription meds for his bad dreams.

Favorite SW parodies that I can dredge up out of hand, in no anywhich standing:
SpaceBalls
Hardware Wars
The episode of Hanna-Barbera’s Popeye show with Bluto as a Vader-type
Thumb Wars ("You must be… the Cry-Baby.")
Eric’s dream from "That 70′s Show"
Star Wars Holiday Special (to quote Leela, "When you say ‘Special’…..?)

For Thumb Wars, I think the best is "Touch your tongue to mine. You know, to make it all official."

Whoo hoo! Matt does it again doubling our chances to win Nick DVDS!

All Hail Lord Matt.

Then again, my chance at winning is about as good as that Giacomo winning the second leg of the VISA Triple Crown on Saturday.

Hey Matt,

STAR WARS + BURGER KING=ALWAYS?

Has Star Wars always been tied to Burger King? I seem to recall my cousin having those sweet glasses from the OT from BK.

Why not venture forth with McDonalds too?

I so wish I would have bought all of their Darth Vaders on base here. My mission wasn’t to collect them all, but I’m just missing Luke, the plushies, and all of the vehicles. I’m sure they are offered for $99 a pop on eBay at this point.

Here in Germany, they are giving away different toys off base. I guess I will stop in and have a beer to get one.

King, how about the Muppet Babies parody? And the "Pigs In Space" Muppet Show sketch. I need a copy of that episode! Eric’s dream from 70′s Show was good, but I’m too disgusted with the recent developments on that show to feel charitable towards it right now. Chappelle’s Show did a great one too: "Ooh! About it tell me!"
Here’s another question. Not to dump on Hayden, cause I think he did a passing job in Ep. 2 and he really grew on me a bit more in 3, but obviously there are some doubts about the caliber of his acting. Who would you have rather seen in the roles? I know this is a rather obvious suggestion coming from me but I kept picturing Nick Stahl as Anakin during ROS. Of course his look doesn’t really mesh with the look that Bach’s face has but we’ve stretched a lot of continuity worse than that. I love Portman’s look and can’t really picture anybody else as Padme, but there were times where she did succumb to that green screen weirdness. I would never think of anybody but Ewan McGregor as Kenobi, though. I think he’s definitely the high point of all the prequels and I really enjoyed the fact that he got a meatier role this time around.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 05/20/2005 8:02 PM

Just to add on to squee’s post if I may, there were 2 big Obi Wan elements I enjoyed. First, his saber skills, which were so good in I, were reinstated after taking a dive in II. Secondly, I liked the way he watched Anakin burn and was neither pained nor repulsed. "You were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them" looks corny but Ewan read it just right.

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 05/20/2005 8:19 PM

The movie was fuckin’ awesome. :D Only real complaint is I wish some scenes/characters lasted longer. But, I think it’s the best way to end the Saga. Badass all the way.

SPOILERS!

Let me start of by saying yes, this film takes a nice piss on the previous two prequels, and comes closer to being in the league of the original trilogy, and Lucas almost, almost, redeems himself. There were a few problems, namely, Lucas deciding on trying to make this Tombstone Episode II. First off, General Grevious has freakin’ turbuculosous like hes Doc Holliday or something (Though I guess thats because of the events of the clone wars cartoons) and then the highly touted lightsaber duel in which he wields four of them was actually nothing great. In fact, most of the highly-anticipated duels weren’t much. Then you have Obi-Wan, who decides to chase him down in a half horse, half iguana that has turkey feathers on his head. Lucas, what were you smoking when you designed this creature? And then, Mace Windu takes on the evil Palpatine in one of the most wooden duels in the entire saga. For a fight that was so touted, especially by Jackson who plays Windu, it was quite disapointing. Then, the moment I really had been waiting for, to see Palpatine truly turn into the Emperor and get his screwed up face and go completely evil, what happens? It was laughable, I mean literally. I don’t know about the rest of the theater, but me and a select few of my friends could not stop laughing whenever they showed Palpatine and his two-forehead, coked out insomniac eyed face. Or when he was in essence doing force-lighting to himself while screaming "I’m an old man! Flush me downt he toilet!" Then the moment that truly said "bullshit", was the moment everyone had been waiting for, the moment Darth Vader reveals himself in the armor/suit we all remember. Oh, what dialog…"Where’s Padame?"…"Is she safe?"…"Am I a homosexual, Master?"…and the moment that I laughed at, but wanted to cry at, the moment Vader went complete sissy and cryed out "NNNNOOO!!!". I was half expecting him to fall to his knees, arms stretched out, rain pouring on him, ala Shawshank Redemption. Though, despite all my bitching, there are good things in the film, and it was better than both Episode I and II. The Anakin/Obi-Wan duel was fairly well done, and when Anakin and other Club 66 members decide to whack out all the Jedi, ala Al Pacino and his family whacking out all enemies in the Godfather Part I, it was fairly cool, though they should have actually shown the ‘younglings’ getting what they deserve. The best is when a female Jedi gets shot to death, and we slowly Zoom Out, as she is continually shot for no apparent reason. Probably the best thing in this film was Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, he really felt like Alec Guiness from the original trilogy. Overall, I’d say I thought the film was decent, and if it wasn’t for some of the dialog and cowboy scenes, it would have been much, much better.

Taco Bell had some star wars tie ins

Chestnuts roasted by Taco Bell @ 05/21/2005 1:16 AM

I saw the movie tonight.

I thought it was awesome. No plot holes left out, and it really gives a sense of completion to the entire triology.

Oh and kingklash: this statement is false: "Kenobi was wrong about Anakin being The Chosen One"

First of all, it was Qui-Gon Jinn who said Anakin was the chosen one.

Secondly…Anakin DOES bring balance to the force….he kills all the jedi, so in the RotJ final scene, there is just the two Sith and Luke. Then, Anakin kills the Emporer, so there is balance: Luke and his Father…Good and Evil…

Also, I loved all the parallels with the OT that were present in this film…Especially the Count dooko fight at the very beggining of the film. Exactly like the RotJ fight, complete with the Emporer watching from his throne. Anakin, however, is unlike Luke in that he kills Palpatine’s apprentice…and thus becomes the new apprentice.

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 05/21/2005 1:17 AM

Well, Cameron. I totally disagree with your opinion. ROTS doesn’t deserve to be the final installment of Star Wars. Not in the least. The story had potential for being good, but it was not carried out properly.

And in a way, Anakin kills Palpatine’s apprentice twice. Darth Vader leaves Anakin when he sides with Luke in ROTJ. Thus, he "kills" Darth Vader and becomes the Jedi he once was.

Chestnuts roasted by Warx @ 05/21/2005 1:30 AM

Well, my GF and I loved it. The first hour or so was a bit blah. Felt Episode 2 caliber. But then it really picked up and I had joygasms through many points.

Some critisize the "NOOOOOOO!" I liked the idea… but James Earl Jones coulda put more feeling in the scream. As for the Frankenstein walk, I went "WHA?!" but after thinking a second, you see him look at his legs and remember… he’s just been given some android legs. Taking his first steps WOULD be awkward.

Then there are a couple of plotholes (that I don’t think ruined the movie, just gave my girlfriend and I something to discuss, and sorry if these were mentioned above).

First off, in Jedi, when Luke asks Leia about her mother and she talks about knowing her a bit, that always led us to believe she was talking about THEIR mother, yet Padme dies in Sith. I guess you could cover the hole by saying in Jedi, Leia was refering to her adopted mother, Bail’s wife, who might have died.

Also, in Empire, Kenobi says "He’s our last hope." then Yoda "reveils" to Kenobi. "No… there is another."
But in Sith, Kenobi Witnessed Leia’s birth. OOPSIE!!

In truth, I have no beef with Sith. I think Lucas made up for the horror that was Phantom Menace.

The only painful part of Sith to me was Padme’s Acting. But I always thought she was extremely wooden and dull.

I’m glad she’s dead. :P

Chestnuts roasted by Blaine @ 05/21/2005 2:30 AM

Oh yeah, and for those who complain about the "Where’s Padme" lines etc. being bad. The black helmet and cape don’t make Vader. At that point, he’s basically still Anakin, wearing the armor. He’d be worried about Padme. He’d wonder what’s going on. Then we get the cheesey "NOOOOO!" And the Vader we meet in the New Hope is Vader AFTER this. After about 20 years of pain, suffering, and basically having nothing else to care about except serving the Emperor. So AFTER that scene people hate is when he gets BAD.

You know I was enjoying the film up until that Windu/Palpatine/Anakin scene. That was just plain retarded. Yeah there were a few people laughing during that. I being one of them. But it was more of a "what the hell am I witnessing? Is this really happening?? I might just cry out of horror!!" kind of laugh. There were some pretty unforgivable flaws and moments of the film. Some things were just better left to my childhood imagination. But hey at least I got to see that kick ass trailer for Narnia!! Woo-hoo!!

Chestnuts roasted by evadrad @ 05/21/2005 7:38 AM

A point that nobody seems to be bringing up, and maybe got overlooked is when Palpatine is telling Anakin about HIS master, he mentions the ability to create life out of the metachlorians. Are they hinting or suggesting that Palpatine might have had a hand in Anakin’s creation??
