05/19/2005: The Revenge of the Sith Discussion Thread…

Consider the comments field for this entry your discussion thread for Revenge of the Sith. Those wanting to avoid spoilers should be careful while scanning through. I’ll be seeing the flick tonight (passed on the midnight opener knowing that it’d require taking today off), and I can’t wait. Three and a half stars from Ebert, fifty and a half stars from people who know who played the Wampa in ESB. Can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait. Share your thoughts, anticipations and questions in the comments.

EDIT: Saw it last night. Didn’t leave the theater knocked out, but it’s grown on me overnight. Will have more to say on Sunday. Oh, those DVD contests? I got a shitload of entries, so let’s make the cutoff Saturday, 11:59 PM for entries. Also, since I got waaaay more entries than I was anticipating (likely in the realm of 700 or so), I asked if the PR comp would mind supplying two of each set. So, there will be four winners total. :)

1st? I too, can’t wait. Not as lucky as you guys who’ve already seen it, but I will see it this weekend!!!

hey, look at that. second comment.
good movie. best of the three. saw the midnight showing about 9+ hours ago

I’m seeing it at 4:00 p.m. today. I think it’ll be awesome. I read the book and really liked the story, and the reviews I’ve read said that the visuals are breathtaking, so the combination of the two could be awesome.

Ghosted by Gozer @ 05/19/2005 9:40 AM EDT

Amazingly, it’s really close to the book and they leave VERY little out (even the really gruesome scenes I thought they wouldn’t show. Not that I’m complaining, mind you). Dialogue isn’t that bad; much better than the first two and a lot better than a lot of the critics make it out to be, but still short of the original trilogy. Alas, I wept when Mace met his end (Bad muthafucka, no longer is he).

Ghosted by Caldo Lanrissian @ 05/19/2005 9:55 AM EDT

it’s funny, so much of it is cgi, but it’s amazingly well done. the effects/environment/characters are all really well done. that, and the story wasn’t bad at all. overall, very fun to watch.

Crowds give me gas, so I’m gonna wait until the masses see it.

Ghosted by Pedro @ 05/19/2005 10:01 AM EDT

I’m going to wait ’til next week to see it, too. Not only do I have a test and essay to work on this weekend, but when I go during the opening week of a blockbuster I always get seated next to the one Comic Book Store Guy in the whole crowded theater who nitpicks the movie loudly. Sometimes that Darth Vader neck-chokey Dark Side force would come in handy, no?

Ghosted by Molten @ 05/19/2005 10:11 AM EDT

Man i cant wait i think im goin to see it at 630 if i can get tickets its been sold out all day but i cant wait oh my lil boba will be soo happy to see the movie that took place while his dad was living ……. bless his soul

I caught the midnight show and thought the flick was pretty kick-ass, but I’ll have to see it again under more optimal conditions in order to produce a more reliable critique. I found myself in the front row corner of the theater, so everything I saw on the screen was out of whack perspective-wise and it gave me a big headache. Plus, I could barely hear anything over the collective roar of 150 camcorders being used to make black-market bootlegs of the film. I will say this: Lord Sidious was uber-creepy, Anakin was only slightly less of a whiny pissant this time around, the inclusion of Wookiees seemed like little more than an afterthought, and during the last fifteen minutes, the film got in a big goddamned hurry to tie everything together with Episode IV in a way that wasn’t entirely fluid or intuitive. Despite all this though, Episode III is undoubtedly the most action-packed of all the prequels (perhaps of all the episodes, period). I’m sure that once I see it again in an environment that doesn’t necessitate me to lean my chair all the way back into the lap of a heavy-breathing, man-boobed fanboy sitting behind me, I’ll enjoy it a lot more and will be less likely to nitpick.

Ghosted by The Yeti @ 05/19/2005 10:21 AM EDT

All in all it was a pretty horrible movie. Hayden Christensen is a horrible actor, and definatly not bad ass enough to be playing Darth Vader. A message out there to George Lucas; learn to write a love story if that is going to be the focus of the movie. There were some of the worst dialogue I have ever heard. In a conversation between Anakin and Padmé there some of the dumbest lines ever were said.
Anakin: "You are beautiful"
Padmé: "It is because I am in love"
Anakin: "No, it is because I am in love with you"
Padmé: "Has love made you blind"
Now that was not an exact duplication of the conversation, but it was pretty darn close. There were points that I actually laugh out loud, a lot of them had to do with the Darth Sidious would just randomly growl for no reason. So that is what I have to say about that.

!!!!**emperor’s make-up job spoiler alert**!!!! was anybody else a little grossed out by the emperor’s poorly done forehead? looked like a wrinkly butt coming out just above his eyes.

Ghosted by jokun @ 05/19/2005 10:35 AM EDT

"NOOOooOOOOoOoOOOooo" – A certain lord of the Sith.

Well done Lucas. In three or so lines you ruin Darth Vader. Nice to hear JEJ back, but he was clearly putting on the highest pitched voice he could achieve to try and match up with Hayden.

Overall though it was a lot of fun. Yoda’s entrance to the Duel at the end is officially the most badass moment in the entire saga.

Ghosted by Darth Frankenstein @ 05/19/2005 10:42 AM EDT

By the way, the only reason that Ebert didn’t give this film a full four stars was probably because Padme didn’t whip off her top and do a pole-dance. Ol’ Roger is the biggest perv in the movie-review business.

Ghosted by The Yeti @ 05/19/2005 10:50 AM EDT

I think this would be awesome if you hadn’t already seen part 4. Sadly, there were no surprises left.

Ghosted by Sweetie @ 05/19/2005 10:53 AM EDT

Sadly, i had to agree with matt and decided not go to the midnight show.(damn work!!) But, in a badass turn of events, my company is throwing a private screener!!! Its tommorrow, but hey..its free, and its a theater that serves beer and TGI Fridays-esqe food. So thats alsome.
Happy Sith day everyone!!

ps. I brought one of Kuse’s brothers with me to work today… hes chillin on my monitor. :)

I’ll also be seeing it a little later. Mainly I’ll be waiting for Greivous, and any good fight involving Yoda. Does he do another of his "Blooming Ground Flower Attacks" that was soo cool in II? Light fuse, then away you get, yes?

Ghosted by kingklash @ 05/19/2005 11:34 AM EDT

Yoda doesn’t make the same high pitched whining noise from what I can remember. His fight/s are much more believable this time round – not that the one in AOTC wasn’t awesome or anything.

I was giddy as a schoolgirl during the ‘the shit has hit the fan’ montage of Jedi death. You see one Jedi after another bite it, then it cuts to Yoda. And you KNOW that Yoda is going to do what all the others could not – see the attack coming and survive. Man, he does it in STYLE!

no ewok or anything ewok like i am to presume?

Really good movie, extremely entertaining. The script seemed a little forced to get everything to line up with episode 4,5, and 6 but otherwise the nerds would be over every single detail that was off.

I thought although it stumbled a bit at parts that just didn’t seem "logical" (even in star wars) I thought overall it was excellent and plan on seeing it a few more times. Also throw in the fact that I had to sit second row and my eyes were bugging out and I was in a general bad mood the whole night so it was probably even better then that.

Ghosted by The Modern Day Pirates @ 05/19/2005 12:19 PM EDT

It was awesome. Not an oscar winner, but if you are a Star Wars fan, you will definitely be fulfilled. I’ll saw many things that just made my hair stand on end based on coolness/wow, we finally see it!! Battle scenes are great, Hayden’s acting is MUCH better, still corny dialogue, but it is Star Wars, you just have to deal with it. Only part I didn’t like was the "birth"…and I’m not talking about Luke and Leia.

The theater was cool…let us in at 8 so we didn’t have to stand for 4 hours. Then they sold hot dogs, sodas and popcorn for $1 each.

Ghosted by Y2JB78 @ 05/19/2005 12:23 PM EDT

I went to the midnight AND made it to work.
General Grievous was quite a let down. He seemed so cowardly and unnecssary (especially since he does so well in CLONE WARS). Much improved dialogue and, yes, it was legitimately funny. I enjoyed it. Better acting too. I am sure we will be hashing this out on the blog forever so I will leave it at that.
P.S. yes, the wookies were added on as an afterthought

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 05/19/2005 12:27 PM EDT

Anyone seen that it’s been posted on bittorrent. I’m not saying that’s OKAY or not illegal. It’s even rumored to be a pre-release verison, so maybe good quality. The camcorder versions I’ve heard can look dark and grainy.

Ghosted by RAS @ 05/19/2005 12:55 PM EDT

I also made it to both the 12:15am show and to work at 8am. But damn was it worth it. ROTS is, in my opinion the 2nd best SW of all time (behind ESB obviously)
It was the first time during any of the prequels when I found myself feeling like I was watching a SW movie, and not some community theatre troupes redition of an EU novel…

Ghosted by oldschool @ 05/19/2005 1:03 PM EDT

Mind you all the people that saw it at midnight were probably serious fan-boys so this might be slightly biased…

I haven’t seen it yet but I plan to this weekend

Cheers

The change in Grievous character could be attributed to the force crush that Mace preformed on him at the end of Clone Wars. It was evident by the nagging cough he had which showed he was weakened(sp?). Still, the fight between Obi-wan and Grievous was pretty awesome.

Ghosted by Wirehead @ 05/19/2005 1:52 PM EDT

Waitwaitwait. There’s a new Star Wars? I’ve got to call my friend Pope John Paul II!
What? Oh geez.

Ghosted by jhnnywalkr @ 05/19/2005 3:44 PM EDT

I really liked this film and I’m far from a Star Wars fan (I call the previous prequels Snore Wars). About the only thing I didn’t like was the way Padme died. A broken heart? Yeesh. I would have had her be mortally wounded during the Anakin/Obi fight. Plus, she came up with her children’s names awfully quick. I also wanted more Wookies.

Otherwise, I give the film 3 stars.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 05/19/2005 4:55 PM EDT

R2D2 is one ass-kicking little bastard.. Padme/Anakin scenes made me naseous..
Space fights and light saber duels way beyond expectations. (waaay beyond)
All in all I gotta say (certainly not for the first or last time) that it’s definitely the best of the prequels. IMHO it is better than ROTJ as well. Basicly it’s probably exactly what you are expecting.
(click my link if you know how to usenet)

*(not so) major spoilers below*

and OMG.. Darth Sidious is Senator Palpatine??! Who woulda thunk it!

Went to the midnight showing last night, was totally blown away. Best of the prequels by far.

A workprint has been leaked and is showing up on all the filesharing networks as we speak, near dvd quality but it does have number at the top of the screen and a dodgy aspect ratio.

Ghosted by Vhaal @ 05/19/2005 5:54 PM EDT

I didn’t mind the Ani/Padme romance as much as the dialog surrounding it. When he was giving his big speech in "Clones," about how he shouldn’t give in to his feelings, but blah, blah, blah, I said to Little Brother and his wife, "That is the most complicated explanation of Blue Balls I ever heard." Then somebody behind me said, "Shh!" But, I believe the damage was done. I’ll have that in mind when I go to see "Sith."

Ghosted by kingklash @ 05/19/2005 6:01 PM EDT

I think ol’ Padme was really just a non-entity which was odd due to her huge significance to the plot. I agree that she should have been injured somehow and then died. It would have given Anakin more motivation.

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 05/19/2005 6:32 PM EDT

Every review I’ve read so far has been very favorable, not all scattershot like with the first 2 prequels. I want to wait until the first huge wave of people flock to the theaters til I see it so I don’t get stuck sitting next to the guy in the storm trooper costume with massive BO. I’m psyched though. One question, Anakin doesn’t babble about sand again, does he? ::cringe::

Ghosted by Lammy742 @ 05/19/2005 6:32 PM EDT

Don’t worry.. I’m sure good ol’ George will spend the next 28 years making various director’s cuts of this trilogy just like he did with the last one.

Ghosted by Cyanyde @ 05/19/2005 7:42 PM EDT

I saw the midnight showing last night. I really enjoyed it, and I would say its aobut as good or a little better than jedi. The dialouge was much better, but padame was still pretty bad. I thought Hayden Christansen did a much better job this time, but most people I’ve talked to still hate him.

I’ve noticed a continuity problem. In jedi Leia saya she remembers her mother, but in ep III padame dies right after childbirth. Leia could have just remembered he adoptive mother, but it seemed pretty clear she was talking about her real mother.

Saw the midnight last night. Good stuff! I still refuse to accept Anakin as Darth Vader, though.

"One question, Anakin doesn’t babble about sand again, does he?"

Well, he doesn’t SAY anything on the subject, but it’s safe to assume he still doesn’t like it that much. Has a bit of a nasty experience on a beach of sorts.

"I’ve noticed a continuity problem. In jedi Leia saya she remembers her mother, but in ep III padame dies right after childbirth. Leia could have just remembered he adoptive mother, but it seemed pretty clear she was talking about her real mother."

The Force, man. The FORCE. Yeah, it’s the Star Wars equivalent of "a wizard did it" but I can accpet it as an explanation. Remember "Through the Force, things you will see, other places, the future, THE PAST, old friends long gone" It’s reasonable enough to say Leia just had some sort of weird force vision/memory thing.

Isn’t it remarkable that someone so completely devoid of writing talent was able to create an entire universe of lovable characters that mean so much to so many people?

Ghosted by The Yeti @ 05/19/2005 10:44 PM EDT

I’ve thought long and hard about how to make a succinct review – I studied several different paragraphing styles, expressive punctuation and checked a lot of facts:

Woo! Star Wars! Woo!

fuck, when Anakin sliced off Dooku’s hands… man. and then he cut off his head… shit.

that’s awesome…

Man, daughter has a play (practice all week until Saturday) and I have a football game on Sunday three hours out of town.

Why the anger? Well, only a few military base theaters will carry Star Wars this weekend, and none are near me (at least an hour and a half away to the closest one). Plus, after this weekend…nothing!!! The base schedules for all the theaters do not list Star Wars at all and their schedules go all the way up to June 15th!!!

I hope it sucks would just too evil for me to say. I hope its good and I get to see it soon…

Semper Fi,

Didja guys see the Falcon?!? That was my big geekout moment.
I am still a little too wowed to really formulate my thoughts. I’m not thunderstruck, you know, but there was just SO MUCH to absorb. Some stuff from above: I thought it was pretty clear from ROS that Leia would have been remembering her adoptive mother in ROJ. It’s a little counterintuitive, but it’s definitely not a continuity problem. I mean, I’d have the rewatch Jedi to be sure but I’m confident. Actually, I think maybe Darth Frank’s hitting it…it’s always about the force.
I hate to say stuff like "the dialogue is soooooo much better" because it’s so pejorative but…dudes, the dialogue is like 800 thousand times better. There are some moments that are clunky or don’t really ring perfectly true but with how much they manage to cover without feeling crammed or frantic I think they did an awesome job. For a movie that’s 1/3 sword epic, 1/3 romeo & juliet story and 1/3 political drama they really tied it all together.
Yeti, I gotta take issue with what you’ve said. If someone was able to create an entire universe of lovable characters, they’re not completely devoid of writing talent. That’s like, oxymoronic. I think a lot of people will agree that maybe Lucas is missing something when it comes to writing believable dialogue. But that doesn’t make him devoid of talent. Of course, you were probably just exaggerating a little and now I’ve taken all the fun out of your hyperbole. Sorry :D
King, Grevious is really really cool. I caught just a little of Clone Wars during Friday’s marathon and now I’m dying to see all of it. Yoda doesn’t pull the move I think you’re referring to, but he has some BADass moments. And I thought the badass was going to be Mace.
More wookies would have been nice, yes. But I think that could be said of a two hour film of nothing BUT wookies, so there ya go.
I’m having the most trouble analyzing the digital effects…they were state of the art, as in the other prequels…they were sort of cartoonish, like the other prequels…they were so shiny and pretty and seamless, not like anything I’ve ever seen in CGI whether Sin City or The Incredibles (which I finally saw).
Did anybody else feel the urge to go the library after the show and pick up some EU books? I don’t think I’ve read any in years, but seeing the end (which I think did a good just of getting us into Ep. 4, in terms of all the political manuvering, personal transformation and freaking giant alien iguanas) made me want to go back and revisit Han and Leia and Luke.
spoilers: So Obi’s chilling with dead Qui Gon in that cave the whole time? A new slashdom is born…and somewhere, perhaps, an angel loses it’s wings. Hehe. I loved that the Emp tells Vader that he killed Padme (not that he’s not culpable for her death anyway, but it wasn’t from the choking), it’s just so creepy and jibes with the twisted master servant relationship we see from them later. That was a good bit altogether, with the breathing and the shaking and even the NooOOOOOooooOOoo!
Speaking of Padme, I did think it would have been cooler if Obi had said something like "You’re married!" to Padme instead of "Anakin is the father, isn’t he?" I mean, duh. The girl never leaves her room and Annie’s the only one coming in, who do you think the daddy is? Show me some Jedi intuition!

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 05/20/2005 1:13 AM EDT

Great movie, bbut I did pick up on a continuity error (and I’m an extremely casual fan). Obi Wan was there when padme had and named the twins plus he set up the hiding locations for both of them. However in the originals he says that luke is their only hope and yoda has to tell him that there is another.

Ghosted by Jotenks @ 05/20/2005 5:29 AM EDT

Whoa…good lookin’ out, Jotenks. I didn’t even think about that. Allow me to reiterate a previous blog entry:

Blue Balls, ‘Klash? Is there something you ain’t telling us?

Star Wars only opens on Friday here in sunny SA. Will go prepared to laugh at Lucas. Oh yes, I think he should have let every fan on the planet help him write the script, and then given it to Spielberg to direct. And have it edited by Jamie Bruckheimer. Or something. Because, let’s face it – Jar jar Binks. Aargh.

Maybe Obi Wan was sexist: he didn’t see Leia as Jedi material, cos she’s a girl.

Ghosted by eminentfreak @ 05/20/2005 7:31 AM EDT

Or Yoda was just reminding him of Leia to drop a hint on US, the AUDIENCE.

They cut out the scene where Qui-Gon Jinn talks to Yoda about becoming part of the living Force, and a load of other scenes.

Believe it or not, in the scene were Anakin finds the kids hiding in the Council chamber, they did film him killing them.

They could have very easily packed all three of these movies into 1 *maybe* 2 episodes, and then spent the 3rd installment following Darth Vader for the next 18 years. There is _still_ the gap from when Luke and Leia are born, until we actually see Leia’s ship get boarded in the begining of EpIV, and in my opinion, the first half of this trilogy is utter waste.

As I have said, Episode III is easily the best of the 3 new movies and probably better than ROTJ as well.

Bottom line: Go and see this movie in the theatre. DO NOT wait for this to come out on DVD. Find the biggest, loudest theatre in your area and bring beer. It is worth it just to see the big bad space ships blowing up.

Ghosted by Cyanyde @ 05/20/2005 11:46 AM EDT

In Attack o’ da Clones, listen to Ani’s speech in the scene where Padme is in her leather lounge wear. Way too many word for "I’m horny."
As for Yoda-sensei having to tell Ol’ Ben about Leia, Kenobi was wrong about Anakin being The Chosen One (insert Kung Pow joke here). Maybe in a bout of chauvanism he never considered the little girl as a possible choice. Or the Force was just dormant in her.
The above statement either makes me a super geek or possessed of amazing intuition. It just popped into my big empty head.
