05/19/2005: The Revenge of the Sith Discussion Thread…

Consider the comments field for this entry your discussion thread for Revenge of the Sith. Those wanting to avoid spoilers should be careful while scanning through. I’ll be seeing the flick tonight (passed on the midnight opener knowing that it’d require taking today off), and I can’t wait. Three and a half stars from Ebert, fifty and a half stars from people who know who played the Wampa in ESB. Can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait. Share your thoughts, anticipations and questions in the comments.

EDIT: Saw it last night. Didn’t leave the theater knocked out, but it’s grown on me overnight. Will have more to say on Sunday. Oh, those DVD contests? I got a shitload of entries, so let’s make the cutoff Saturday, 11:59 PM for entries. Also, since I got waaaay more entries than I was anticipating (likely in the realm of 700 or so), I asked if the PR comp would mind supplying two of each set. So, there will be four winners total. :)

Fit for Natalie, thanks for giving your input on some questions i raised. I don’t agree with all of them, but it’s still good to get feedback fron another point of view.

I just wanted to comment on the reason Padme died: Yah, I’ll give you that Anakin did all that stuff (the whole turning evil thing), and that’d be hard to take. But I’d say that THAT causing her to not have the will to live is crap. She’s a new mother…of TWO children. I’m hoping most parents would agree that the thought of caring for her two children would be enough to keep her alive.

I really think I could have enjoyed this movie if I didn’t know anything about the SW Universe.

I wanted to ask the other X-E parents out there…
Did you take your kids to see Ep 3? If so, how old are they?

thx

am i the only one here that thinks that luke, not vader, was the actual chosen one? i mean, he’s not the badass vader was, but he did ‘bring balance to the force’ by turning vader back to the good side, who, in turn, killed the emperor

As for the contrived reasons why Padme fell in love with Anakin, he could have been using his MAGIC FORCE POWERS on that sweet galactic babe.

After all, it’s not like he’s the most moral of people :-)

Happy Birthday, Manimal? Well then, have a great day, hope everything is well for you and the whole family! Happy B-Day!

still haven’t seen it yet…

General Grabass is strong like ten Russian women!
Matt, when is ToyFare going to have TTT ripping Chap III? I have the issues of TF wih Mego Superman beating up Terrance Stamp, and Mace Windu lopping off people’s arms while saying, "This party’s over!" Can’t wait to see what commentary the guys have on this one.

HAPPY ‘NOTHER YEAR, MANIMAL!!!

I have nothing to say on the movie, as I have yet to see it (saw Hitchiker’s Guide this weekend though – I liked it), I did however want to wish Manimal a happy birthday. I also wanted to say SCREW ALL YOU! MATT YOU LEAVE THE X-MAS THEME HERE HOWEVER THE HELL LONG YOU WANT!

But go ahead and finish the Chia Plot please.

Jokun:

I disagree. Luke helps turn his father back to the good, but it is ultimately Vader who makes the final choice to throw Palpatine over the side.

Also, remember that Luke is Vader’s offspring. Which means that without Vader, Luke would not have existed.

I still think Anakin is/was the chosen one…Luke is simply part of the prophecy, too.

Dude, space battle at the beginning? Just awesome. Not long enough. General Grievous? Coolest looking character ever and the way he moved was just great. Seeing Darth Vader in armor? Pleased me very much.

On the other hand… I don’t care what some people say, that dialogue was the most horrible stuff I had to wade through. Some pieces I liked, like when Obi-Wan screamed at Anakin, "You were supposed to be the chosen one!" But when Palpatine was at knifepoint with Windu? "I’m so weak! I’m so weak! I can’t hold him off any longer!" Uggh.

And the "Nooooooooooooo." that Darth Vader let out at the end. That’s what I say when I want to spoof something. God.

General Grievous was awesome to look at though. I want his action figure now.

If we learned the Force here on Earth, can you imagine how lazy we would become? Remote controls a thing of the past. Loading DVD’s a video tapes from the sofa. My God… it would be beautiful.

KARMA…

I wouldn’t take a child younger than maybe 9 or 10 – there is a lot of stuff happening in this movie that is too much for a young child to take. It may sound prissy, but seriously – seeing a guy lose his legs and then burst into flames and moan and wail just seems like something that young children don’t really need to see prematurely.
Sure, the lava and fight scenes were pretty cool, but killing the kids (even though it’s off-screen) and the general atmosphere would make me highly consider not taking a young child… It just isn’t like the other SW movies…

:o )

Well, I enjoyed it. I’ve seen it 3 times. Unfortunately, there are some things that seemed rushed, and they definately should have left eh Qui-Gon scene in. Yoda’s last comments to Obi seemed to come out of left field.

As far as "No, there is another…" Someone else mentioned it, both Yoda and Obi knew about the twins, but I don’t believe either expected Leia to have any force powers, or at least, not as strong as Anakin/Luke. In the Extended Universe books, Leia doesn’t begin to learn to use them until after ROTJ, but they all knew she would have them. Luke also tells her that in ROTJ.

Also, the exact lines of ROTJ are:

Luke: Leia, do you remember your mother….you’re real mother…?

Leia: Just a little bit. She died when I was very young….

Luke: What do you remember?

Leia: Just….images really. Feelings.

So it’s obvious that they both know Leia is adopted. Also, she says images, and feelings. So how many times do the Force users use feelings? THat’s basically how she an have a recollection of her mother. I don’t see why so many people are confused/have a problem with this.

Yoda was badass. I really wanted more Wookies, and I think it would have helped the Jedi Purge if they would have said something about Order 66 when they first found out about the clones. You know, like they knew it was there. Like a secret imprint on the clones, and only figure it out once the Jedi Purge began. Oh well, what’s done is done.

SO either Palpy or Plagius created Anakin. Watching Yoda and Obi-Wan fight side by side was great (although REALLY brief). To understand why Grevious ended up the way he did, you need to watch Clone Wars. MAce almost killed him. It’s mind boggling how Hayden and Portman have ZERO chemistry with each other, but have chemistry with everyone else. I thought Hayden did a good job, and his banter with Obi-Wan seemed natural and as if they had fought side by side for some time.

All in all, I enjoyed it, and I was happy. Lucas could have done worse, but we got something finally did justice. And for those that have this really sad and twisted hate for the prequels, I can almost garauntee you will by the DVD when it comes out and then watch all 6 movies including the "atrocious" first two.

The more I think about it, the more I love the movie. Yes, there are quite a few plotholes.. but that’s alright. It was still good eyecandy.

I have one gripe though. Grievous. I love the bad guys and I always have and Grievous was no exception (he was probably my favourite, actually) but.. If he’s supposed to be the best fighter, a Jedi killer and all that.. Why was Obi Wan able to cut off his hands right away? He has four arms and he almost immediately lost two hands. What is that?! I wanted to see more Grievous. :\

I don’t think Plagius created Anakin. I think it was Palpatine. He wanted a decent apprentice so he took on Dooku while Anakin was growing up, knowing that he’d be discovered as a Jedi at some point. Since he was created out of midichlorians, that would be why his count it so high, and the unexplained pregnancy of his mother who does say ‘There was no father’ during the first movie.

I have very little to gripe about. I truly did enjoy it. But more Grievous, dammit. I want the action figure.

There is an upside from the "Special Editions" of 4, 5, and 6, though. They can patch up some movies that were otherwise ok, but with a minor glitch or two. In a related vein: Lets talk somebody into remaking TransFormers: The Movie totally in CGI. But, use the same old soundtrack. You just can’t replace Scatman as G1 Jazz.

Ghosted by kingklash @ 05/23/2005 1:49 PM EDT

I’ve been dissapointed with both the Grevious action figures I’ve bought. (Deluxe and 12".)

Don’t blame James Earl Jones for the "NOO!" line- it was Lucas’ call on which take to use.

I still haven’t seen the movie, but I will soon enough… Clonetroopers rule!

Ghosted by DarkPrimus @ 05/23/2005 1:49 PM EDT

DarkPrimus: What’s wrong with the Grievous action figures? I’m not wasting my money if they aren’t worth it. (Well, I probably will, but I’d still like to know anyway.)

Ghosted by Starreh @ 05/23/2005 1:58 PM EDT

What?! Vader kills the emperor?! Way to ruin it for me, thanks guys. ;-)

In the book it kinda explains how obi-wan whooped Grievous so quickly. The short of it is, obi-wan uses the most common lightsaber fighting style, its very simple, and he’s a complete and utter master of it. Simplicity in itself can be confusing I would imagine if your opponent is being all fancy and fancy like with four arms and what not. Never the less, I’m taking captain solo and he’s friend…I mean never the less, I would’ve liked to see a little more lightsaber action between grievous and obi-wan.

And I really really loved the end duel with battle of the heros playing and it kept cutting back and forth between yoda/emperor and obi-wan/anakin.

Admitedlly, we shouldn’t have to read the novel to fill in the gaps, the gaps should be in the novel and filled in by the movie. Which actually brings a new thought to mind, that sort of confirms the wookies being a last minute thing…
There’s no distinct mention or detail of the battle of kashyyk in the novel or the video game. I figured "well maybe georgy’s got something special planned and we only need to keep them from escaping…I mean, that the battle was going to be this insanely cool and large deal, not 45 seconds of wookies roaring" but apparently I was wrong.

I think that kinda sucks that you had to watch the cartoon to understand the movie. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the cartoon is badass but its almost like being required to watch the Star Wars Christmas SPecial to get info needed for the movie viewing. They should just keep it in the movies….

And alas I still have the image of darth sidious screaming "NOO, NOO, NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! YOU WILL DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEE!!!!" (during his duel with Mace) in my head. I swear he’s gonna turn into Linda Blair at that point. I keep thinking his next line is going to be "YOUR MOTHER SUCKS COCKS IN HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

A friend of mine mentioned to me the other day that they are planning on starting work on a Star Wars TV series….

Anyone have any word on this?

To those how hated Palpatine’s whining, he was doing that to get Anakin to attack Mace. Sure, his acting may have been bad too, but the motivation was, as in everything else he does, to get Anakin to turn to the darkside. He was far from beaten.

Starreh: The Deluxe’s action feature hinders posability. I would reccomend picking up either the Sneak Preview version or the Four Lightsaber Attack version of Grevious if you want posability.

The 12" figure sucks balls because it’s next to impossible to get him to stand up, and his fingers are made of soft plastic, so you can’t even have him hold his fucking lightsabers. His cape is the most badass cape I’ve ever seen, though. I’m thinking I’ll give him a black wash to bring out all the details of his sculpt, and then give him a top hat. Then he can do a song and dance number with my 12" Xenomorph (who is currently singing a solo with my other 12" Star Wars figures in a kickline behind him).

Ghosted by DarkPrimus @ 05/24/2005 5:13 PM EDT

Oh, as a note: I don’t own either of those figures I recccomended, but judging from the picures on rebelscum.com, they’re the best. Good luck finding a Sneak Preview Grevious, though.

Erik M- If you want figures, but hate ebay, go to cloudcity.com- Way better, and lots of diff. stuff. I am sorry you hadn’t had the chance to see the movie!!!

"Luke: Leia, do you remember your mother….you’re real mother…?"

Galvatron, here’s my attempt at explaining this apparent inconsistency: maybe Bail Organa’s first wife died early on when Leia was a child, and the Bail remarried. Leia would think his first wife was her "real mother", when in fact it was just her first adoptive mother. Howzzat?

Anyway, I thought it was a good movie, though obviously it could’ve been much better. I still won’t accept Hayden Christensen as Anakin. The guy is such a TERRIBLE actor. It’s no wonder he’s thinking of quitting acting and becoming an architect- at least he knows his acting career will only go downhill from here on out.

The best part of the movie was when Anakin was lying there legless and literally fuming while Obi Wan confesses his disappointment and frustation- I thought that scene was so genuine, and of course mostly due to Ewan MacGregor. He’s everything Hayden isn’t. Although I think Ewan was perfect as Obi Wan, I can’t help but wish HE had played Anakin instead. I think he could’ve singlehandedly raised Episodes 2 and 3 to OT status had he been chosed to portray Anakin. He’s sort of wasted as Obi Wan, but still, he did a helluva job.

Ghosted by Al @ 05/30/2005 9:54 PM EDT

When my husband and I left the theatre last week, I reflected on Christopher Lee and Ewan Macgregor. Both of them are genuinely trained actors that weren’t pulled from a headshot portfolio and given the roll on looks alone. I am beginning to wonder whether well-trained acting in big film is a dying art.

I guess there are a few greats in the work such as Toby McGuire and Ewan, but honestly, since I’m a woman who’s not afraid to dis a pretty actress, I can say Natalie Portman just may not have been the best pick for the role. She looked the part, but the film just never played off with any real depth from neither of the young portrayals of Padme and Anikan. Both Christensen and Portman seemed under confident in most scenes.

I’ve watched Portman in other roles where she’s able to interpret more. She has talent to spare. I can’t help but wonder whether Lucas buried any creative juices that flowed on the set that weren’t his own creation.

If he does make another trilogy, he really needs to step aside and let another director take the reins.
