05/01/2005: You saw the House. Now meet the Store.

Almost didn’t beat the clock to get this one up before the weekend ends, but here it is — an almost-sequel to the House article, it’s….The Store! Yes, on the way home from the House, we met the Store. The Store is also known as “Gizmos & Gadgets,” and it’s got everything. Just a step above a thrift shop, it’s the place that gave me WWF loot bags, Dinosaurs Attack! cards and a black licorice pipe that I completely forgot to mention in the article. Go check out the goods! Envy the crap I have no place for! Make outrageous monetary offers!

Matt, if you plan on heading back to NY to visit that store, let me know. I’d gladly send you a few bucks to pick me up some stuff from the store, especially the Nintendo trading cards and WWF loot bags. I used to have tons of those old Nintendo cards when I was a little kid. I remember that I stored the cards, along with my Ninja Turtles action figures, in my Nintendo storage crate.

Holy….CRAP!!!!

I have that TMNT postcard book! All of those postcards are still intact, too.

Another AWESOME article, Matt. At least this one got on Fark!

Matt, I don’t see the ads you’re talking about at the end.

Those Dinosaur Attack cards are freaky. I would love to see a card by card breakdown article from you. Also, an article on the stuff you bought not show in this article.

I would love to have a store like that here. I fell in love when I spotted the pic with all those toys. Awesome.

Matt, I know you’re busy with a real job in the real world now, but thanks a ton for the two recent articles. They were great, and well worth the wait!

Anyone else want to see Matt in a Darth Vader voice changer helmet?

Ghosted by RAS @ 05/02/2005 3:52 PM EDT

This is way off topic, but speaking of Darth Vader, HOLY CRAP! Darth Vader Slurpee Cups! Has anyone else gotten these? They hurt mein eyes to look at.

Krang and I will not be denied our love!

I saw that postcard book at my library on Saturday. They had all of their superhero books on display. That was the only TMNT one I haven’t read. I should’ve took it off the shelf and read it.
And I wish I could find stores like these more often. Or maybe I just pass them and think they’re tire stores and don’t bother going in. :D

The turtles were small in those post cards because of a storyline from the Archie turtle comics issue #6 i think and a show from the old cartoon. The artwork was just reused and copied over to a degree. But ya, most of that whale shit never has anything to do with mutant ninja face attacking. That is why i love it so.

You haven’t done a "fundraiser" where you sold alot of your crap in awhile… I’d love to get my hands on a few things that you’ve written about but haven’t been able to find, especially the movies. Think about it…

You know that Christmas was established on December 25th to combat another upstart religion’s worship of the sun god, and it’s actually rather probable that Jesus was born in late April, as many of the events described in the Bible take place in spring.

Hey, about the TMNT post cards… I can tell just from looking at the cover of the book that they’re using the art from the Random House picture books. Infact, the two cards described with the Turtles in a glass bottle and eating a giant pizza are from the book The Incredible Shrinking Turtles, based on the season 2 episode of the same name.

My superior knowledge of TMNT wins again!

"proves to be the Store purchase than interests me the least"

"that" interests me?

good article :)

Ghosted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 05/02/2005 6:24 PM EDT

Zombie Derrick is right…arc was called "The Incredible Shrinking Turtles." And yeah, there really was a scene where they got trapped in a bottle and another where they’re eating a (comparatively) enormous pizza.

I have those postcards and treasure them. The art sure sucks though. ;)

Man, those "When Dinosaurs Attack" cards look like they were done by the same artist that did the "Mars Attacks" cards.

I had quite a few of them when I was a kid, never managed to get the whole series, but they were definitely an influence on me.

Great article. Always great to read about your treasures.

And as has been said before, 20 minute time limit? Heathens!

Alls I can say is, "Another great article Madd Matt". It brought back a bunch of good memories…Dinosaurs Attack Cards, and the TMNT book especially. Can’t wait for Part Duex.

Ghosted by Texican @ 05/02/2005 6:43 PM EDT

Hey Matt! Great article, Sir. From the looks of the picture it would appear that you will not be able to assemble a complete set of the ‘Dinosaurs Attack!’ based upon the number of packs shown. I am almost certain that I have a shit load of ‘doubles’ for that series. If you are interested, let me know what numbers you are missing and if I have them, I’d be happy to pass them along. Sadly, you are correct when saying that these cards (As well as other things) could never be printed today. Therefore . . . May all the hypocritical worshippers and creators of political correctness drop fu–ing dead!
Have a nice day folks!

I had that Supergirl movie storybook when I was younger, and Marvel Comics versions of those Trading Card Treats.

I really do remember those Dinosaur Attacks! cards. They didn’t really gross me out,I was more interested in the idea of rampaging dinosaurs existing in the modern day becuase of a fluke of science to be worried about that.

There’s a store in a nearby town that’s like this one,but they mostly have NASCAR stuff and cheesey crap, and has only been around for a few years,so the only pop culture things I’ve ever seen in this store is stuff more recent, like Disney movies,Spider-Man,Star Wars Episode One,things like that. I did see a shopping cart full of late eighties-early nineties Marvel Comics, including ones like G.I. Joe.

Just don’t plan on coming all the way out here to rural Michigan, expecting another Store, becuase you’ll be disappointed.

The Lost X-E Articles, for those of us who have never read these. One of them is a review of the child molesting Different Strokes episode.

That Monkey Attack is a real good one sadly matt never told us why the monkeys were on cars and everything, did they escape from a zoo or What Mattz.

Matt, u are my personal hero–plugging Manahawkin was cool. I live 15 minutes from Manahawkin.

This article was great–like stepping into a time-warp. A good time-warp at that. I couldn’t help but think of my Super Mario Bros. paper cup dispenser that my mom bought for the kitchen when I was six. She won’t get rid of it b/c she thinks it will be worth something. You know, it probably has more value than those napkins or trading cards.

Never before have I see such gruesome trading cards. Good lord–Dinosaurs Attack???!!!
Once again, a great article–good clean fun for the whole family… If you family is a bunch of nostalgia freaks (mine aren’t, but I have a friend and a boyfriend who are). Remind me never to go to the Middle of Nowhere that is Upstate NY again.

I heard people talking about Family Guy today on campus…particularly the GI Joe part. That was classic–my brother and I laughed hysterically over it.

Lord, how I love places like "The Store." There was a place like that on the next block over from me when I moved into my apartment about three years ago. That lady had EVERYTHING, from great CDs and original Nintendo games that I hadn’t seen in years to plates, dishware, and appliances that used to be found in my mother’s pea-green kitchen when I was three years old. I got three CDs, a chair, books, and countless pieces of little junk and toys like the masks and the joke stuff.

Alas, the place has literally been abandoned since its former owner flew the coop; a "closed" sign is permenantly etched into a cracked door. I’m glad to know such places still exist elsewhere. This article brought back some good memories, and reminds me of how much I love looking for treasures among what’s more-or-less trash.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 05/02/2005 9:13 PM EDT

Ooh! I remember those Dinosaurs Attack cards! Better than the GPK cards, in my opinion.

Just what we need, a Shredder and Krang Hentai card. :P
Hmm, you think the TMNT postcards were made by the same company who made the Bebop and Rocksteady "We’re Made for Each Other!" Valentine’s Day card? ;)

Matt, I really have to thank you for reminding me of Dinosaurs Attack! cards. My brother had a couple back in the day, and I used to sneek peeks at em’ and thought it was cool because of the gore. Now, years later, I read this article, then immediatly googled up a page with all the cards scanned and damn, they are pretty fucking gory.

Ghosted by Black Zarak @ 05/03/2005 1:48 AM EDT

I’ve been to that store. Wish I bought some stuff but for some reason didn’t feel like it at the time. I caught on my way back of from the Jersey shore. Matt’s right about 97 percent junk and it looks like he just scored the extra 3 percent. I love the fact you made it to that place Matt. small freakin world

It’s all about the captain power, alan thicke in gold plstic armor, lol. I had those same masks u found at one fo my parties. i was obsessed with that stuff as a kid, the evil dudes name was judge dredd wasn’t it? got me all confused when that movie came out. I had thats guys big mech vehicle and used to use that on all those tapes which for awhile tookover for my nintendo, lol

Ghosted by Rychiar @ 05/03/2005 8:08 AM EDT

whoa sorry about the multiple posts. The store’s not actually in Delhi. It’s in morris. I think that’s the name of the town. A town which also has a covered bridge

Ghosted by Alexius @ 05/03/2005 8:13 AM EDT

Do an article on the dino cards…I think I speak for most of us that we want to see them all

Ghosted by thejyav @ 05/03/2005 8:39 AM EDT

Wow, so many comments this soon.

This article has pictures of WWF wrestlers, Mario and TMNT. Everything a guy could want.

The best thing about the store? The straw doll outside the front window (cf 1st picture).

"MR. GAME & WATCH"

Sun worship was anything but "another upstart religion’s worship of the sun god". Sun worship (specifically, worship of the Ancient Egyptian Sun God Ra) had been around since at least 2400 BC. Not really what I’d call an "upstart" affair. LOL

Sorry for the religion-related comment everyone!

I wonder if the Store has a Monkey’s Paw for sale?

Ghosted by kingklash @ 05/03/2005 11:42 AM EDT

Matt should have taken a picture of both rooms. i think in the second room there was a display case with half a stearing wheel or something. none the less the place is awesome. I wish every town had recycle shops like these.

Woo! License to Drive and, even better, TURK 182 are coming to DVD! Oh how I have waited for Turk 182. Matt, you probably get tired of people asking you to review their suggested movies so I’m not going to do that. Except I kind of just did. Damn I’m good.

Ghosted by jhnnywalkr @ 05/03/2005 3:42 PM EDT

As with alot of people on here, I also remember the Dino Attacks cards (though vaguely) It’s one of those images I saw when I was younger that became permantly etched in my mind (that and the cover of Iron Maidens Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son album)….anyhow! Who doesn’t love goin to stores like that. I remember about a year or so ago I was downtown with my parents and went into a store that had a shitload of old movies, comics, cds…u name it! But moving on…I know I’ve posted this before…but I’m gonna ask again. Does anyone remember these cards from late 80’s early 90’s They were stickers I remember, and they were of real products…but the names were like a gross or disturbing version of the products. the mirror on my dresser used to be covered with them…but cannot remember for the life of me what the hell they were called? Does anyone remember?

Ghosted by Jabo @ 05/03/2005 3:48 PM EDT

Nope, fraid not. Maybe if you could remember a more specific example? Sounds like something from the GPKs era.

Ghosted by jhnnywalkr @ 05/03/2005 3:51 PM EDT

Wacky Packages, no?

Ghosted by Matt @ 05/03/2005 3:56 PM EDT

I agree with Wacky Packages also. They’re making a comeback. They’re were some free inserts of them in some comic books a few months ago. Pretty cool.

Jhnnywalkr: Haim was interviewed about License to Drive in Entertainment Weekly. Batman’s on the cover.

Looks like Wacky Packages it is.
http://www.wackypackages.org/
JLAJRC: Cool, thanks! I’ll see if I can check that out. I’m always interested in whatever inane thing either Corey has to say. Although I must admit, I missed the 20/20 interview with the Feldman about MJ. What I’m really waiting for though, is the Turk 182. I’ve convinced myself I’m one of the few people on the face of this earth that remember it and desperately want to see it again. It’s practically impossible to find in a video store. I’ve found VHS copies on E-Bay, but I’ve been holding out for a DVD. I figured it must come someday.
