X-E's 2008 Halloween Countdown is capable of soul-eating.

03/30/2005: Mooshagaloogapork.

I’ve only recently started watching Carnivale (by recently, I mean as in the week before the season finale), but I spent a day out sick from work yesterday sitting through the entire second season.  In what began as an attempt to stay awake for an afternoon conference call that couldn’t be missed, I passed on all the rest my fever was begging for to watch an awesome midget get a rubdown from a scorpion lady, among other things, I guess for thirteen hours straight.

What a fantastic show, I can’t believe I stubbornly passed on watching it all this time.  I won’t bother detailing it, but I’d say watching any two successive episodes would turn just about anyone into a fan.  Give it a shot.

I’m back at work now, feeling very clammy and as if I shouldn’t cough on anyone.  On the plus side, the giant Toys ‘R’ Us across the street had an equivalently giant street sign showing an M&M character in a Darth Vader costume.  I couldn’t make sense of it during the groggy walk to my building, but all signs point to a TRU run during my lunch break.  I wonder if I can land myself a Darth Tater.

Okay, I better get to work before Dora bursts through the wall and yells at me for setting a bad example.  Might as well do a

Survey: Totally lame one, but why not?  Name it.  Name your favorite Simpsons episode evahhh.

I’ve always liked the first season where they go to family counseling.  Watching them zap each other while Marvin Monroe tries to regain control.

NUMBER 2!!!!!!! my best ever!!! Gotta be Ralph Wiggum…hands down!

Ghosted by ralph @ 03/30/2005 9:59 AM EST

My favorite episode is the one where Homer thinks Bart is gay and takes him to the steel mill to see "real" men.  When the break whistle blows, the disco ball drops from the ceiling and all the tough guys start dancing with each other, etc.  I also think its the same episode where Bart lipsyncs Cher while wearing a black pageboy wig.  Good times.

DOH! i thought it said character….see what happens when you get excited about being post number2……..It probably the baseball episode with Don Mattingly and Darryl Strawberry…Ozzie Smith..so on etc. Classic episdoe and perfect usage of guest actors….now these guest actors are thrown in everywhere……….

Gotta go with "Behind the Laughter."  It was ehhhxellent. Getting Jim Forbes to do the narration was a great touch.

8th! Personal best! Woo-hoo! (unless someone posts before I can get this in)

My favorites tend to be pretty early in the run. I always really enjoy the flashback episodes where we find out about the early days of the Simpsons. Aside from those, my favorites are the one where Marge thinks of cheating on Homer with the bowling instructor (so many quotable lines) and the Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase.

The one with Phish and medical marijuana, good stuff!

Without a doubt, any of the Halloween Specials.

The episode where Homer heads the union is hands down my favorite episode. I think it is from Season 4.  Anything they’ve done in the past 5 years is barely worth watching.

Here’s my Top Ten:
1.  Last Exit to Springfield
2.  Rosebud
3.  Duffless
4.  The Last Temptation of Homer
5.  Boy-Scoutz N the Hood
6.  Lisa the Vegetarian
7.  Homer and Apu
8.  A Star is Burns
9.  Homer: Badman
10. $pringfield (or, How I learned to Stop worrying and Love legalized Gambling)

The best episode by far has to be the one where Homer gets the job working for Scorpio in his power plant and has no idea he is building a death ray to take over the world.

Best parts:
- Homer asking where to get hammocks … " … the hammock district."
- Homer tackling "James Bond" while he tries to escape and then gets shot
-Marge turning to wine when she finds everything is perfect in the new town
-Homer gets mad when Scorpio gives him the Denver Broncos to thank him for his work

Classic.

I’ll have to agree with Traynor, the episode where Homer thinks Bart is turning gay is my favorite.

- at the steelmill
Rosco - We work hard, we play hard!
(C&C Music Factory - Everybody Dance now, starts playing)
Bart - Dad, Why did you take me to a gay steelmill?
Homer - I don’t know

that’s a great episode

I’ll have to pick’n'choose, mix’n'match, and column a/column b from the Hallowe’en eps.
Homer cubed
Easy Bake Coven
Clown Without Pity
Hungry are the Damned
Homega Man
and the TV 666 opening.

Just about the hardest question you could ever ask Matt.  After all my name is an o’mage to a Simpsons Halloween episode.  2 cookie points for anyone who can tell me which one!

Anyway, I’d go with Homer the Heretic.  Gotta love starting your own religion.

my favorite simpsons episode was the softball ep.  i even know all the words to the song, even though i haven’t seen it in probably 4 years.  i used to be a total simpsons nutjob, but now i’m really dissapointed in the show.

my favorite all time simpsons moment was when the crew and milhouse went away for the 4th of july, and bart was trying to get the cool kids in the town to want to hang out.  he told milhouse to stay down and showed off a bunch of skateboarding tricks.  the kids weren’t buying, so bart went back to milhouse.  milhouse said "are we in yet?" and bart said "no, they must’ve seen you!"

The one where they make alcohol illegal and Homer starts brewing bathtub alcohol. I think that’s gotta be my favorite.
Homer: To alcohol! The cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.

I have to say that my all time favorite episode is when they go to NY to get back the family car.

No pizza only kalu kalush…

A Streetcar Named Marge. It’s underappreciated, but the plot is solid, the music is, IMO, the best such accomplishment in any episode ("If you wanna go to hell you should take a trip to the Sodom and Gomorrah on the Mississip!") and there’s the great subplot with Maggie in the Ayn Rand Day Care Center.

Matt, you should rent the first season of Carnivale. It was 10x better than the second season. Everything about it was just awesome - the musical score, the acting, the photography… plus, you get to see Jonesy and Rita Sue do it in an open shower stall. Woohoo! Oh, and Dora Mae’s funeral (the cooch family’s youngest daughter) is haunting. A lot of people have compared it to Laura Palmer’s funeral in Twin Peaks. If you can’t find the DVDs anywhere, let me know. I own them, and wouldn’t mind sending them out your way.

I loved the Halloween Simpson’s episodes, especially The Raven segment. I also liked the ep where Lisa is cool for a day at the beach, and her friends glue shells and seaweed all over the Homer-mobile, only to be attacked by seagulls for their entire drive home.

Ghosted by trajeal @ 03/30/2005 1:20 PM EST

Ah.

Trip to NYC is a great one, props to the person mentioning the klu kalash.  "only mountain dew and crab juice."  "ewwwwww, ok I guess I’ll take the crab juice."

Matt, Before I tell you my favorite Simpsons episodes (or at least one of them), I must tell you that the Garbage Pail Kids movie is coming to DVD! I remember your wacky review sometime back so thought you’d appreciate watching a decent version of it…if it can be decent. :) Anyway, one of my favorite Simpsons episodes (since there’s way too many name) the babysitter one with Ms. Botts…I love Penny Marshall’s voice on that one. :)

Ghosted by Melissa Y. @ 03/30/2005 2:00 PM EST

God, I am a Simpsons freak, as I type this I own all the Simpsons dvd’s, have about 12 tapes filled with Simpsons episodes and am staring at my "The Many Faces of Homer" poster. Some of my personal fave’s are.

Homer’s Phobia - Homer realizes his new friend is VERY gay and after seeing Bart in a hawiian shirt realizes Bart too must be gay.

Lisa the Vegitarian - Lisa proves further that she is the smartest person on the show by giving up meat and hanging with Paul and Linda McCartny while Apu sings Sgt. Peppers.

Deep Space Homer - Homer goes into space after competing with a very sober Barney for a spot on the shuttle. Gave birth to the great line from Buzz Aldrin "Second comes right after first!"

Marge Vs. The Monorail - Ahhhhhh, Phil Hartman. Springfield has extra money in there budget for the first time, instead of fixing all the pot holes in town like Marge suggests they hire Lyle Lanly to build a genuine, bonifide six car monorail. Anyone else notice that after Phil Hartmans very untimely death the Simpsons started really going down hill… Weird huh?

And now for my rant about how The Simpsons sucks now… I dont know what happened (actually I do, Ian Maxtone Grahm happened) but The Simpsons, for oh, the last 6 years or so has gone away from what it one was. Watch the early years of the show, for the first 7 or so seasons, the show had heart. The family faced problems, there were real, ingageing stories each week. Now, because the show runner for a lot of episode’s doesnt actually like the simpsons (ian maxtone grahm), the simpsons has lost that. Cant totally blame him, although he has in interviews said he was never a fan of the simpsons in the early years because he thought it was too serious. Also have to blame advertisers, the simpsons has gone from a run time of 22 minutes to 20 minutes to allow for extra commercials. Two minutes may not seem like much but thats enough time for a whole sub plot. Anyway…. Long story somewhat shorter, as much as I love The Simpsons, the show has run its course, and its time for it to end *single tear*

oh great now someone else is gonna get rich off my idea.

I like the slower-paced, relatively-realistic, episodes with solid writing and character development, or, to put it another way, I like the episodes that are like most episodes of King of the Hill.

My top three overall are:

Marge Be Not Proud: Bart gets caught shoplifting a popular video game and is able to more or less get away with it for a while, but, when his parents do find out, they act like real parents would, being disappointed in their son, giving him the surface "cold treatment", but still loving him.

Summer of 4 foot 2: The family goes on vacation to Maine, and, since no one there knows Lisa, she finds she can fit in with the "popular kids", but these are three-dimensonal "popular kids" that have well-developed personalities by one-shot Simpsons character standards, so they won’t necessarily shun nerds should they find out the truth about Lisa.

The Last Temptation of Homer: Homer meets Mandy, an attractive new female employee at the powerplant who likes everything he likes and seems like an ideal match. There’s not a single fly in the ointment, other than Homer’s devotion to Marge. Can Homer’s conscience, represented by Colonel Klink, keep him from straying?

Ghosted by Steve Brandon @ 03/30/2005 4:49 PM EST

Definitely the 100th episode spectacular, Christmas, and Halloween episodes (one of my co-workers gave me a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror DVD for Pollyanna this Christmas–thanks Joe!!!!!!)

Remember the outtake from "Homer and Apu," especially the one where they are watching the Hindu movie, and the woman is singing "La-la-la-la-la," and the guy breaks into the window, and the dude with the shifty eyes?  Bart says its sucks, but Homer says it funny b/c "my clothes are different from his clothes."  That Hindu music is funny!!!

Not offend anyone, but did anybody ever see Hindu music videos on local access TV?  They used to show those on the old Adelphia Channel 8 (now Comcast 8 in Ocean County, New Jersey) 10-15 years ago.  The bright colors, costumes, bad songs, shoddy production, and strobe lighting
were classic at best.

I also wanted to mention the time on the Critic when Jay did that Jewish song and dance for Duke, who had bee eyesight. Heidel-deedle-heidle-didle.  I think thats how it went.  Man that hysterical!!!!!!!!!!

Ghosted by Allison @ 03/30/2005 4:58 PM EST

Damn Sknyluv beat me to it! :P  but yeah I also would have to say "You Only Move Twice" is like one of my favourite episodes. Hell to this day me and my younger brother still quote it at the strangest time. We even went to the point of using a P2P software program to download the episode. Depending on how long this entry’s up people while answering the survey question…we should try to stump each other with simpsons trivia…like me and my oldest brother do (I have 3 brothers :P)

Steel Mill Episode:
Homer: You guys are sick
VERY gay Steel Worker: Oh, be nice!!!

Bart takes the old people on a cruise ship: Sea Captain: YARRRRR!! I’m not attractive!

Neverending door bell: Bumble Bee guy: Aye Yai Yaiee!! Senor Ding-Dong!

I gots me a Darth Tater! :D

I just found out today that we have an ENORMOUS Darth Vader head/mask sitting in our training room. I haven’t seen it, because it’s locked up, but I heard it’s the size of, say … one of those plastic play houses for kids. Apparently we were supposed to destroy it and send it back from where it came, but instead, we’re having a contest. Whoever sells the most BPP’s (a 1 year extended warranty) gets the enormo-vader-head! Alas, I won’t win. Damn the cashiers!

Not sure why we have it, but damnit, I gotta see that thing tomorrow night!

I don’t really watch the Simpsons anymore. I used to, but not for years.

The Stone Cutters was in my opinion the best episode. Honorable mention goes to the Simpson’s Spin Off Showcase but it doesn’t get me in syndication like it did when it first aired. They must have cut some good out.

I had a feeling you were avoiding Carnivale for some weird reason! It’s okay, I’m the same way with Deadwood. It’s so cool to hear from someone who got hooked by Season 2. Traj has lots of company in her opinion that Season 1 was a lot better, but I think they compliment each other. If you haven’t seen any of Season 1 yet you’re majorly missing out.

Already saw a couple mentions for this one, but the "Cape Feare" episode is, without a doubt…the best…episode…ever…

Homer is putting Bart, who is all freaked out about Sideshow Bob trying to kill him, to bed. Bart lays down…and Homer busts in the bedroom with a tray of brownies and a butcher knife in hand…"BART, DO YOU WANT SOME BROWNIES!!"…bart screams and says "Dad, I would really appreciate it if you didn’t barge in my room brandishing a butcher knife." Homer says, "Huh? oh right…the Sideshow Bob thing. I’m sorry boy."
Bart lays back down and in comes Homer again, "BART, YOU WANNA SEE MY NEW CHAINSAW AND HOCKEY MASK!!!" Bart again screams…Homer says, "Oh, what was I thinking?"

Also, the scene at the Witness Relocation office where they are trying to tell Homer his name is Mr. Thompson is great. "Now, when I step on your foot and say ‘Hello, Mr. Thompson’, you nod" "Hello Mr. Thompson"…Homer leans to the guy next to him…"I think he’s talking to you"

Also, when Lisa is reading her letter from her pen pal…ok, I’ll stop now…

Yeah, good episode

"Roman Numeral Three: Surprise the boy in bed and…disembowel him! No, I don’t like that "bowel" in there. GUT HIM! Ah, le mot juste!"

I’d have to say the X-Files episode, the one where Homer gains 300 lbs to become disables, the Jurassic Park parody where the Simpsons go to Itchy and scratchy Land, the Sherri Bobbins episode, yes, even the Poochie episode.

Speaking of the Poochie episode, would Poochie surivive today what with all that "X-TREEEEME!!!" crap? :P

I’ve got all the dvd’s, some books and the trivia game.  btw that trivia game is really indepth.  My favorite question, how many times was Homer married?  3 howard points to the winner.

The one with the medicinal pot was great…seeing Homer hanging out in the attic with Otto…and the one where they come to Canada!
- "Why would I want to leave America to visit America Junior"? Being a Canadian, that quote always stung a little, but it was still great to see the Simpsons in Totonto!

ras,  i’m going to say 3 times, twice to marge and once to the waitress in vegas.

another great moment just popped into my head.  the halloween ep with hugo, and dr hibbert says "you’ve probably never even seen yourself in the mirror" and hugo looks at the frame hibberts holding.  *BAM* punch in the face.  good stuff.

quite correct big jerm, most forget he married marge twice.
another favorite moment, homer stays up all night eating 64 slices of american cheese.

I’ve read the postings and can’t believe no one’s mentioned the "tomacco" episode where the Simpsons leave Springfield for the old homestead so Homer can avoid a duel.  The tobacco and tomato plants cross breed and produce an addicitive tomato.  The cigarette companies are after it and eventually all of the crop is consumed by the hopped-up farm animals.

I love Carnivale, but I don’t have a TV, let alone cable, so I have to content myself with the first season on DVD until the second comes out on magical discs of joy.

The first Simpsons episode that comes to mind is the one where Bart says "I wash myself with a rag on a stick". But then, upon further thought, I like the one where Homer accidentally makes a time machine out of the broken toaster in the basement and keeps coming back to fucked up realities.

There have been so many Simpson moments I’ve enjoyed, I can’t possibly single one out. But my favourite whole episode is The Monorail (parody of the Music Man).

And, I’ve never heard of Carnivale. What’s it about, and when is it on?

Aah, the wonders of dem silly Simpsons: definaately the one where Lisa’s tooth creates life, and she’s shrunk down to their level by Bart… Also, the Shinning. (Isn’t it Shining? "What, Boy, d’ye want us te get sued??!")

Ie, Halloween specials roool.

Missed you guys: getting a internet-cafe fix. And STILL the Christmas lights? You do know it’s April Fools Day, Matt? Maybe the Darth M&M wuz product of your fevered brain? Kidding! Don’t throw me ou…aaargh.

I’ve always been a sucker for the Halloween episodes. I especially like the short where the school starts making children for food. Fattening them up and the giant blender etc.

That one just always sticks out above the rest in my mind.

Good God people, how can so many of you people like any recent episodes?  It’s been firmly established that the Simpsons were in their prime through years 3-8 and anything after season 10 is HORRIBLE!  The only people who like recent episodes are the same people who had hundreds of jokes and subtle references go over their heads during the early seasons and now simply laugh at whatever stupid situation Homer get into in these recent episodes.

Ghosted by Fan @ 04/01/2005 3:21 PM EST

Fan,
jeesh…relax..I do know a lot of people that like recent ones as well as the prime years. I, myself, can agree that the Simpsons has past its prime, but that some episodes can still make me laugh…the one where Homer made a video for Lisa in the mall stands out…when he says her favorite books are "magazines" and her best friend is Maggie.

"Maggie, you’re her best friend. You go talk to her."

Give us all a break…and just enjoy the thread…

Tetsu, Carnivale is on HBO on Sundays at 10 pm. The second season just ended, and now we’re waiting to find out if it will be picked up for a third. We should know by June, and if the show comes back it will probably air sometime in 2006.
As for what it’s about? An awesome midget, just like Matt said. Actually, the story takes place in the middle of the dust bowl during the Great Depression. One branch of the story follows a traveling carnival, headed by the aforementioned awesome midget, while the other branch follows a preacher in California with a growing following. It’s sort of like Gabriel Garcia Marquez meets Grapes of Wrath, but it’s also not really like anything else you’ve ever seen.

Fave Simpsons episode ever has to be the Treehouse of Horror (I forget the number) with these three parts:

1)  Homer clones himself.  I love the dialogue:

Vendor:  "But I must warn you, its webbing is a mesh of comfort…and evil."
Homer:  "You had me at comfort!"

And the part where he’s blowing away the clones that remember the way home?  Priceless.

2)  Billy the Kid, Frank and Jesse James, the Sundance Kid, and Kaiser Wilhelm are resurrected and terrorize Springfield.

3)  Dr. Hibbert creates man-animal hybrids.

Dr. Hibbert:  "Now be careful, he may try to slobber on your crotch."
Homer:  "Eh, I’ve been around Scotsmen before."

And by the way, Nate, my favorite SB e-mail has to be dragon.  You can’t compete with the "Trogdor" song at the end, and the fact that Strong Mad is carving "DAGRON" into the table is brilliant…absolutely brilliant.

I really don’t think the new episodes are all that bad, although they do kinda overdue the cheesy gags, the ‘All I know is that my testicles wont fit in my underwear!’ line kinda took the cake. Although for some reason besides all the halloween specials I’ve liked the one were Nsync were on it, and there was LT Smash and stuff, that one was awesome. The one were Homer works for that company that ends up being evil, though I can’t remember much about that one. I love Radioactive man, the Bongo comic adaptions of him are really good! I wouldn’t call myself a big Simpsons fan, though watching reruns doesnt usually get boring… I seem to enjoy watching Family Guy and Futurama moreso, though…

Okay I’m out, and I’m also ben-sevenfold.

I can’t believe I forgot Deep Space Homer! The James Taylor moments are classic! "Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground…uh…sweet dreams and flying machines flying safely through the air."

My favorite Troy McClure line:
"You may remember me from such educational films as Alice Doesn’t Live Anymore…"

My favorite Ralph line:
"Hello, Principal Skinner. Hello, Supernintendo Chalmers."

I also love it when all the faces of PBS come after Homer because he doesn’t make good on his pledge. Betty White’s great in that show too.

ARRGH! I could go on all day!

I have to agree with "22 Short Films About Springfield." The episode just reminds me so much of the film Slacker.  One of the few Simpsons episodes from more recent times that doesn’t make me wish I was watching Futurama or Family Guy.
The Pulp Fiction bit still sticks out in my mind also.  "Heh.  Shakes.  Don’t know what you’re getting." Genious.

I like the one where Homer becomes an inadvertant missionary (help me JEEBUS), although the ending is a little weak.

My all-time favorite one though is when he sees his face on a box of Japanese detergent and goes to Japan and Bart meets a girl who is playing that dancing arcade game.

I also like it when Homer hoards and falls in love with the gigantic pile of sugar :)

This is probably about dead but since so many people qouted their favorite lines I had to run this one by when I saw no one mentioned it.

Marge: Have you noticed something about Bart?
Homer: New glasses?
Marge: It seems like something could be troubling him.
Homer: Probably misses his old glasses.
Marge: I want to get more involved in Bart’s activities, but then I’d be afraid of smothering him.
Homer: Yeah, then we’d get the chair.
Marge: That’s not what i mean’t Homer.
Homer: It was Marge, admit it.

My favorite Simpson’s episode definitely has to be the one where Bart wants to be a daredevil.  He wants to jump the Springfield Gorge(?) and Homer actually ends up doing it (unsuccessfully).  Homer falling down the gorge (twice!) is some funny %$#*!!!

My favorite, if I must pick only one, is "You Only Move Twice," in which Homer moves the family upstate for his new job with the Globex corporation. Little does he know his friendly new boss is a fucking supervillain. I don’t know if I’ve ever laughed harder than I did when Homer gets James Bond shot.

————————–
He’s getting events from KOTH mixed up with the Simpsons, but there actually was a Simpsons episode where Homer sees his face on the box of Japanese detergent. It was in the episode "In MArge We Trust," where Marge takes up counseling at the church, becoming extrememely popular. This leads Reverend Lovejoy to a crisis of faith, and questioning his own worth. In the b story, Homer tries to find out why his face is on the damn box. It was a really good episode; Lovejoy winds up rescuing Ned Flanders from a mob of angry apes. The sermon that following Sunday is titled "Conquest of the County of the Apes." Always makes me chuckle. :)
