X-E Loves Sharkleberry Fin Kool-Aid!

Merry Easter! And what better way to celebrate than with the Ultimate Tribute To Sharkleberry Fin Kool-Aid! Yes, Kool-Aid is my latest obsession, something I'm not very proud of but totally welcoming of it all the same. I've decided to devote a whole ten minutes of my life each week to tracking down old packets of Kool-Aid, and since Sharkleberry is an awesome pink shark wearing sunglasses, his flavor topped my list. Long thought discontinued, the mix is now on sale again in the United Kingdom. Article provides a taste test, commercial review and a look back at the pages of an all-Sharkleberry edition of The Adventures of Kool-Aid Man comic book. Oh. Yeah. Is this the part where I tell all of you to raid the back of your kitchen cabinets and send me all of the old Kool-Aid ya find? That'd be swell, thanks.

Thanks to the whole two of you who sent in egg pictures! I kid, I know it was a late request. The R2 egg was created by a reader named Anthony, and I've definitely done the same thing to eggs in the past. "Wanda Waddle," the blue beauty on the right, comes from Kristin. Big bonus points for using plastic googly eyes.

When you're done celebrating GAWD or waiting for your friends who celebrate GAWD to finish celebrating GAWD, get down with this survey: What's your favorite Kool-Aid flavor of all time? I told you...I'm on a kick.

Edit: Blog regular and old pal Manimal sent in a great batch of Easter Egg pics -- click "more" to see 'em...

Manimal calls it: "Busted on a joy ride."

Manimal calls it: "The Max Eggo Band."

Manimal calls it: "Emmie Side Up."

Okay, off to stuff the mush.

I know it’s a little late, but I LOVED Rainbow Falls. I can still taste it after twenty years, but haven’t seen it since then. I wish I could describe this wonderful taste but I’m having trouble with that. Petition Kraft to bring back our favorite flavours!

OK, this is the perfect opportunity to bring this up. When I said this to my husband he looked at me like I was crazy. A couple of months ago I was online and found a picture of an 80′s-era packet of Kool-Aid and I had this completely guttoral reaction. That glass pitcher with the dripping condensation on the outside (so you know it’s icy cold) and the fuity beverage inside. AAAHHHH!!! When I saw it it was like I was 6 again and I needed Kool-Aid in the worst way. Can anyone relate to this?
I was actually a huge fan of the Fruit-T’s that came out a few years ago. I was sad when they discontinued those. The Strawberry Tea rocked.
As far as drinking old Kool-Aid, when my husband was a kid he was a big fan of watermelon Wyler’s. When his mom couldn’t find it at the store she wrote the company to ask about it and they sent her a huge box of packets. I can only imagine how old they are – 15 years maybe? We drink them all the time with no ill effects. We’re coming down to the last of them though – finally. The cool thing is that it’s clear so you can fake people out and tell them it’s water. We’ve done it more than once.

I used to dye my hair with Kool Aid when I was in high school and Sharkleberry Fin was my favorite color. I shit you not.

So Matt, just curious, did your pee turn pink? The pinkness of the pitcher was amazing!

My aunt gave all of her kids and me koolaid points for the free toy at the Jetson’s movie. It was very small and looked nothing like what was promised, but it was still the most exciting movie ever because of it. Holding up the Jetson’s car when it was on screen too was just magical.

Scott P: Thats funny you were on the wayback matchine, I do that all the time with this site, I missed out on some much stuff I really would love to read everything! I find it funny that the only pictures that seem to be missing are the ones of Matt.

What kind of premiums would be in the X-E Wacky Warehouse?

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash- 120,000 X-E points, 2,400 Woolong S&H. (45 Zeni in Canada) @ 03/29/2005 5:44 PM

I remember when Kool-Aid had a huge promotion with Nintendo around the time Super Mario Bros. 3 came out. They had Nintendo-themed games and puzzles on the back of those Kool-Aid Kooler boxes. Brings back memories of having SMB3 fruit snacks and a Kool-Aid Kooler at snack time on a school field trip to the park.

Oh and does anyone remember when Kool-Aid had a promo with KayBee Toys that when you turned in some Wacky Warehouse points, you got a free video that had all kinds of weird skits on it?

Okay Mars-
I’ll tell, even though I already pretty much said it all. We were in K-mart a couple of years ago getting something for something… I don’t remember, but I know we had some food from the frozen section. We got into the express lane- 10 items or less, I think, and the guy in front of us had a crapload of Kool-aid, plus some other stuff. I guess he thought that duplicates of one item counted as one or something. So because the flavors were different and he didn’t separate them into groups, the girl at the register had to ring them all up individually. I counted them as they passed- one hundred packets of Kool-aid. In the express lane. Who does that? And it took forever to ring them up, too. It was crazy!
Not too interesting now, but boy was that a story when it happened!

My favorite kool-aid flavor is lemonade. I find it kind of funny how so many people seem to love the cherry flavor yet to me it’s the worst tasting flavor easily.

ah, the "wacky wild kool-aid style" tape. yeah, you could get some interesting stuff at kaybee with kool-aid points such as hot wheels, gack splat!, and those little volley balls with frog legs(Wonder if anybody else remembers those). Anyway, the tape mainly consisted of overdubbed stock footage from kool-aid commercials and black and white movies, and some sketches including a cartoon rendition of stan frebergs take on day-o where the bongo player has an ear ache, and the one where dom deluise is taunted by a newspaper box. watched the tape who knows how many times ’til the vcr ate it.

Chestnuts roasted by cheaptrick @ 03/30/2005 12:17 PM

I have the tape. Will review someday. Positively absurd.

Oh, yeah!

during desert storm i used sharkeberry fin to make the desalinized water drinkable. i even made up a song about it:

sharkleberry fin x 5 (the first 2 fins are dragged out, the last 3 are short)
gonna fuckin’ die x 5
ship me home in parts x 5

it’s not very original, but it was humorous at the time.

i really like the bottle of chardonnay you have chilling behind the pitcher of kool-aid in the picture.

A+.

As an aside, did anyone notice the name of the artist who did the cover for the activity book? Dan DeCarlo – longtime Archie Comics illustrator. Interesting…

hey matt, off topic slightly but, according to digitalbits.com, there’s a 2 disc Jaws anniversary dvd coming out in July! You’re gonna need a bigger boat!

Is Rockadile Red extinct too? I really want to make a pitcher of it but there’s only one left in my kool-aid stash.

Very cool IHAQ.

I actually just found the Wayback Machine recently. I’m still pretty addicted to it. And I only found X-E 2 years ago or so. I’ve still got a lot of catching up to do. Just read one on Matt’s 1987 birthday party. "Is Jake Clairvoyant? YES!"

Chestnuts roasted by Scott P @ 03/31/2005 8:25 PM

How many people Wayback X-E? My X-E excitement really just started in October and I immediately went to the Wayback Machine to see what I’ve been missing. I just wish there was an easier way to read old articles… like with a simple archive feature on this site.

And the 1987 Birthday Party is also one of my favorites.

Chestnuts roasted by Carri @ 03/31/2005 9:12 PM

Something else just occurred to me…

It’s too bad that this comic wasn’t published a few years earlier, because the letterer for Archie Comics in the early 1980s was none other than…

…Pierre Bernard (credited as Pierre Bernard Jr.), the graphic designer from Late Night with Conan O’Brien and the star of "Pierre Bernard’s Recliner of Rage". The guy is at least ten years older than he looks (looks 30, actually in his early 40s).

I felt Sharkleberry deserved 100 posts.
