X-E Loves Sharkleberry Fin Kool-Aid!

Merry Easter! And what better way to celebrate than with the Ultimate Tribute To Sharkleberry Fin Kool-Aid! Yes, Kool-Aid is my latest obsession, something I'm not very proud of but totally welcoming of it all the same. I've decided to devote a whole ten minutes of my life each week to tracking down old packets of Kool-Aid, and since Sharkleberry is an awesome pink shark wearing sunglasses, his flavor topped my list. Long thought discontinued, the mix is now on sale again in the United Kingdom. Article provides a taste test, commercial review and a look back at the pages of an all-Sharkleberry edition of The Adventures of Kool-Aid Man comic book. Oh. Yeah. Is this the part where I tell all of you to raid the back of your kitchen cabinets and send me all of the old Kool-Aid ya find? That'd be swell, thanks.

Thanks to the whole two of you who sent in egg pictures! I kid, I know it was a late request. The R2 egg was created by a reader named Anthony, and I've definitely done the same thing to eggs in the past. "Wanda Waddle," the blue beauty on the right, comes from Kristin. Big bonus points for using plastic googly eyes.

When you're done celebrating GAWD or waiting for your friends who celebrate GAWD to finish celebrating GAWD, get down with this survey: What's your favorite Kool-Aid flavor of all time? I told you...I'm on a kick.

Edit: Blog regular and old pal Manimal sent in a great batch of Easter Egg pics -- click "more" to see 'em...

Manimal calls it: "Busted on a joy ride."

Manimal calls it: "The Max Eggo Band."

Manimal calls it: "Emmie Side Up."

Okay, off to stuff the mush.

Purplesaurus Rex: a grape-lemonade combo

I miss it so much I try to make my own with grape Kool-Aid crystals and frozen lemonade… it never works…

When I was a kid, I used to wonder what would happen if Kool Aid man tripped and fell over. do all his guts come spilling out, and does he die?

Ha ha! I heard mention of Squeezits…I haven’t thought about them in years! Remember those flimsy plastic bottles they came in? And there was one flavor that was clear until you dropped in a tablet of color. It was their version of every manufacturer’s need to create a "mystery flavor."

My favorite was Great Bluedini…and I remember drinking it only in Burst form.

I don’t know if that’s still made, but I found out a few weeks ago that Berry Lemonade made by Jones Soda tastes EXACTLY like it!

Like Matt and Well, my favorite is good old cherry.

I still drink Kool Aid occasionally in the summertime, and it always brings me back to hot summer afternoons when my sisters and friends and I would come back from the beach for a brief lunch before returning for a second round of sand and surf fun. Since we were usually covered with sand and salt, Mom would serve us Kool Aid and sandwiches on the back porch. Sometimes, we’d even get a home-made Kool Aid pop.

All about the Purplesaurus Rex.

Apparently, two parts lemonade Kool-Aid to one part grape Kool-Aid makes a decent copy.

I had an uncle who worked at a church and he’d always cut off the Kool Aid points from the big cans.. I had two or three Wacky Warehouse watches, that Kool Aid canteen thats on this page and a Sharkleberry Fin towel that I STILL HAVE AND USE every summer. The thing is extremely faded but still in one piece.

Awesome. I don’t remember sharkleberry fin, as I was not alive. But, I do remember when squeez-its were introduced, and Kool-Aid made their own, midgetized versions of them. Squeez-its no longer survive(at least not anywhere I’ve seen), but the Kool-Aid versions still litter convienience store coolers.

Hey Matt, I was just digging around X-E on the Wayback Machine over on http://www.archive.org/web/web.php There’s so many great great articles on here. Have you ever thought about (or has anyone ever approached you about) publishing a book of all your articles? In glorious color no less! Maybe break them down into a couple different volumes; Movies, Toys, etc.

LOVE IT!

Holy crap!

Yay for Sharkleberry Fin! I’ve got an old packet hanging around in a plastic bag in my room- sorry, but I don’t think I could give it up. It’s pretty beat up, but it looks almost exactly the same as that new one. I really hope this comes over to the states soon.

Favorite flavor? From the past, Purplesaurus Rex. Today? Ice Blue Raspberry Lemonade, hands down.

Also reminds me of the time we were in K-Mart and we got stuck behind the guy with 100 packets of Kool-Aid in the express lane. Did I tell you guys about this before?

Thanks, Matt, for all the current articles- it’s almost like we’ve stepped back in time!

No, tell away.

Wow, it’s been a while.

My favourite of all time was Mountain Berry. Also know as Knott’s Berry if you go to their farm and pay A LOT of money for Kool-Aid.

Of course, that is also the only flavour that literally made me sick fro both ends. I was a masochist.

AND IRRIDESCENT SHARKS REALLY ARE JUST CATFISH, MATT! FOR THAT MATTER, REALLY BIG, REALLY DUMB CATFISH!

But I used to keep them, and balas, and redtails, and blacktips, and blacks, and rainbows, and apollo sharks. Just for the name (also, apollos ate guppies and minnows like they were going out of style). Who cares if they are all really just barbs (AKA carp, AKA minnows).

I like that flavor that has the magician/hopeless gamble-aholic octopus on the front. I forget if they were trying to sell it to kids based on their love of magic or their everlasting desire to gamble illegally, so the octopus with cards could be either. All I know is it’s greenish blue and tastes good.

Mountain Berry Punch is the definitive Kool Aid EVER!!! I so wish I could drink this once again. And not get poisoned for drinking an old packet.

Does anyone know what the shelf life is on a packet?

Chestnuts roasted by Heathtown @ 03/29/2005 4:02 AM

We don’t have Kool Aid in the UK, where did you get yours from?!

Chestnuts roasted by Thom @ 03/29/2005 9:03 AM

maybe you do have it, but it’s spelled "kool-aide" or something. extra letters seem to be a staple of your language. haha, just kidding.

my favorite flavor is tropical punch. other have come and gone, but tropical punch will always be there. plus, the packages smell really good after you empty them.

How could I not mention the all-time favorite flavor of all kids the world over: The Suicide! Kool-Aid Suicide is the possibly the only thing on Earth that is close to the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster. Especially if you mix the packets with only enough sugar for only one packet. No sugar rush, but you might pucker yourself inside out. The sugar is just enough to keep you from becoming a singularity.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 03/29/2005 11:35 AM

kingklash- My friend has the best recipe for a pangalactic gargoblaster. I’m allowed to tell it to you, but you must swear to always toast to Nick every time you make one.

Here goes:

1 oz Spiced Rum
1 oz Gin
Tonic Water
1 oz Blue Curacao on top
Dash of bitters
Toast to Nick

The drink will glow in black light. I’d love to see it glow in the dark, which may soon be possible.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 03/29/2005 11:53 AM

Oh yes. I forot to mention garnishing it with a lemon, or a lime, or both. I prefer both.

Keep in mind, this drink will most likely blast you off to a places where you can find the ingredients to make a real pangalactic gargoblaster. Yep. It’s that potent.

And as with all drinks of that type, alcoholic and non- : drink, but very carefully…..
The Hitchhiker’s Guide sells better than the Encyclopedia Galactica.
