03/27/2005: X-E Loves Sharkleberry Fin Kool-Aid!

Merry Easter! And what better way to celebrate than with the Ultimate Tribute To Sharkleberry Fin Kool-Aid! Yes, Kool-Aid is my latest obsession, something I’m not very proud of but totally welcoming of it all the same. I’ve decided to devote a whole ten minutes of my life each week to tracking down old packets of Kool-Aid, and since Sharkleberry is an awesome pink shark wearing sunglasses, his flavor topped my list. Long thought discontinued, the mix is now on sale again in the United Kingdom. Article provides a taste test, commercial review and a look back at the pages of an all-Sharkleberry edition of The Adventures of Kool-Aid Man comic book. Oh. Yeah. Is this the part where I tell all of you to raid the back of your kitchen cabinets and send me all of the old Kool-Aid ya find? That’d be swell, thanks.

Thanks to the whole two of you who sent in egg pictures! I kid, I know it was a late request. The R2 egg was created by a reader named Anthony, and I’ve definitely done the same thing to eggs in the past. “Wanda Waddle,” the blue beauty on the right, comes from Kristin. Big bonus points for using plastic googly eyes.

When you’re done celebrating GAWD or waiting for your friends who celebrate GAWD to finish celebrating GAWD, get down with this survey: What’s your favorite Kool-Aid flavor of all time? I told you…I’m on a kick.

Edit: Blog regular and old pal Manimal sent in a great batch of Easter Egg pics — click “more” to see ‘em…

Manimal calls it: “Busted on a joy ride.”

Manimal calls it: “The Max Eggo Band.”

Manimal calls it: “Emmie Side Up.”

Okay, off to stuff the mush.

Second post, and my favourite Kool-Aid has to be cherry. Anyway, I WOULD’VE sent in an egg, but I have no egg colouring shit, except for a sharpie. Hey Matt, whatever happend to that store that sold food long forgotten, (the one you bought the ten year old Jell-o at)? I wish I had a store like that.

Ghosted by Well @ 03/27/2005 12:16 PM EST

Wow, i forgot about this one. Thanks for mentioning the all mighty purplesaurus rex…always my favorite. I remember being quite addicted to the heavenly frozen variety

So tell me, when is Shark Week exactly?

Happy Easter!

Thanks for clueing us in on the ecto cooler/screaming tangerine name swap. I know that was like a year ago, but thanks.

woo hoo, I’ve finnaly found time to catch up, and I’m even rewarded with a new article…man am I spoiled. My fav koolaid is lime..I dunno why, I just like green sturff.

Ghosted by brandon @ 03/27/2005 12:57 PM EST

Kool-aid kicks major ass but who could forget Freshie drink mix, with the little kids on the cover licking their lips, well thats as i remember it. I’m sure no one will remember, because it was a canadian company from the 60’s, my dad had saved up packages of it lol.

My favorite Kool-aid flavour is cherry.

Kool-aid articles were among the first things I read here at X-E and this one is every bit as good.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 03/27/2005 1:45 PM EST

Great Bluedini. favorite blue flavor(Though blue lemonade’s a close second) probably the first to use that color changing powder, plus the fact that it’s a octopi magician, which seems like a random choice, but it made for an interesting commercial. I found it weird though that the octopus was a cartoon in the kool-aid stuff store spot then appeared in his own commercial as a puppet with a human face. at least it lasted a few more years as a kool-aid blast flavor.(do they still make those?)

Ghosted by cheaptrick @ 03/27/2005 1:54 PM EST

I think he’s still available as a plastic-bottled Kool-Aid. (Are those Blasts or Bursts?)

Ghosted by Matt @ 03/27/2005 1:57 PM EST

yeah, i think bursts were the real name. I never seem to bother with those store sections anymore.

Ghosted by cheaptrick @ 03/27/2005 2:12 PM EST

I loved sharkleberry! Kick ass flavour, man. Let’s see, what else? All the old ones you can’t get anymore… purplesaurus rex, the blue one they had around ‘90 (i think it may have just been an early blue lemonade, i don’t know), that black halloween one, and that really really red one that my mother always absolutely refused to buy because if I dropped it on the carpet she’d cut off my fingers. I think it had a dinosaur on it too or something. Anyway, that’s my kool-aid, sigh, meeeeemories.

Ghosted by Road Block @ 03/27/2005 2:18 PM EST

I just read the article and realized the blue one was berry blue. Damn, I loved that Windex poser.

Ghosted by Road Block @ 03/27/2005 2:22 PM EST

Black Cherry or Orange. Big Berry Blue fan when it was out.

There used to be kool-aid races in our house to see who’d be the one to finish the current pitcher and select the next flavor.

Ghosted by Carri @ 03/27/2005 2:24 PM EST

Favorite Kool-Aid flavor? Definitely Ice Cool Arctic Green Apple. It makes my mouth feel like I just brushed my teeth…with Kool-Aid. Has anyone heard or seen anything about there being a Mort The Dead Teenager Movie being made?

Ghosted by Jerkface @ 03/27/2005 2:25 PM EST

Kool-aid burst are still avialable at a local gas station here, they sell them in singles and over priced.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 03/27/2005 2:45 PM EST

Do you EVER get relief from the mush stuffing detail?
Fav flav would be Strawberry, followed pretty closely by Cherry. Reading the Kool-Aid FAQ reminds me of those bygone days when we thought that mixing hard liquor into any flavor of Kool-Aid made an delicious and even sophisticated cocktail. We were simple and naive back then…
Awesome that E. Claire seems to have more interest in the Doc Ock egg than the frilly pinky girlie one. The R2 and Wanda eggs are cool too.
Happy Easter, all. My churchiness was limited to watching four hours of "Jesus of Nazareth", and that only started because the tv guide told me the dude from Deadwood played Judas.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 03/27/2005 4:08 PM EST

Three articles in a week? It’s almost like the good old days! Happy Easter, all!

Ghosted by WP @ 03/27/2005 4:20 PM EST

Gawd rawks! Gawd rolls! Gawd does the flying drumset better than Tommy Lee!

I had friends in town last night, so we went out and closed a bar down, it was killer (duck?) Then I just stayed up all night, since I had to be at church at 5:30 in the fucking morning. I had to play trombone in our church choir, which is kind of hard when you’re still drunk from 3 hours before! :) It was a blast, I smoked a bowl so I was down with Jesus for the morning. Then I went to breakfast, came home and took a nap. Then I went to my grandma’s house for ham. HAM!! It was delish. Now I’m home trying not to crash until bedtime. If I take a nap now, I’ll be up all night again and that would be bad for work tomorrow.

Fave Kool-Aid? Hmmm…prob Berry Blue or Great Bludini. I also dig plain lime. The green is a big draw for something you put in your belly!

Happy Easter!

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 03/27/2005 4:22 PM EST

Has Berry Blue been resurrected? Kool-aid has it on their site as a current flavor.

Ghosted by Carri @ 03/27/2005 4:55 PM EST

The "new" Berry Blue isn’t really the same as the old one, even if it is, if that makes sense.

Ghosted by Matt @ 03/27/2005 5:02 PM EST

Kool Aid was okay. I tried it a few times. The only powdered drink I ever really drank a lot of was Country Time. Is it just me or are most powdered drinks 99% sugar or aspartame?

Never tried the Sharkleberry Fin. From the picture you have, Matt, that strong pink color makes it look more like liquid bubble gum or a weak Pepto Bismol solution.

Ghosted by Bert Raccoon @ 03/27/2005 5:07 PM EST

It makes perfect sense Matt.

If this article had come a day earlier I would’ve been inspired to experiment dying easter eggs with kool-aid.

Ghosted by Carri @ 03/27/2005 5:08 PM EST

When I was younger, I used to drink Kool-Aid like it was going out of style. Now, I can’t stand any drink that comes in powder form (even Nestle Quik I only get in syrup form). Of course, my mom only gets the sugerfree diet flavors so that maybe why.

I guess my favorite flavors are the citrus ones or combination flavors like Sharkberry. One fruit flavors are too simple for me.

I had the mugs, but they were clear plastic. Never collected those points.

Cool pics. I really like the R2D2 one.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 03/27/2005 5:33 PM EST

OH NO YOU DIDN’T!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awwwwwww shhhhhiiittttt! You made a tribute to my most favorite flavor of Kool-Aid of all time! OK, now I absolutely must read this article before I make like Kingklask and- KABOOOM!!!!!!!!!!

(too late)

Ghosted by Nate @ 03/27/2005 7:35 PM EST

Great article Matt!

As for my favorite flavor? That’d be plain old Orange. Why? For the last few years my doctor had me on a VERY strict diet with NO citric acid in it. But, now I’m off those meds, so I can have orange again! Sitting here drinking a glass of orange Kool-Aid right now. :D

By the way Matt… Buy my old cookies!

After they stopped making Purplesaurus Rex I never drank anything grape flavored again. In my mind, it could never live up to the taste of that damned Kool-Aid. To this day… still no grape flavored drinks for me! (And that dinosaur was so CUTE! Sickeningly cute…)

Ghosted by Meg @ 03/27/2005 8:06 PM EST

I’m totally stoked to hear that Sharkleberry Fin has returned in the UK, cuz I’ll be there in May. Maybe I’ll come across it.

However, this article is not going to make up for the fact that you STILL haven’t taken down your Christmas decorations.

Ghosted by Nate @ 03/27/2005 8:07 PM EST

Ghoul-Aid is definitely the coolest one I’ve ever seen, but I’ve never actually had it. My parents didn’t let me drink Kool-Aid when I was a kid. We were a "100%" family. :(
I used to drink Squeeze-Its at friends houses, though. Those were really good.

Favourite Kool-Aid is Orange-Pineapple. Can’t find it anymore. When I was a kid, it was Apple Kool-Aid. Why did they discontinued that one
?

Ghosted by Liquidduck @ 03/27/2005 8:47 PM EST

Holy…Christ. Sharkleberry Fin is my all-time favorite Kool-Aid flavor. Oh, the countless sleepless nights I’ve spent pining for that unique Sharkleberry goodness. Actually, I can’t even remember what it tasted like when it was around, but I do remember loving the shit. Speaking of egg-coloring and whatnot, anybody remember those Dudley brand coloring kits that included a large plastic egg into which one was supposed to place a real egg along with some dye and then shake vigorously? Whenever I would see a commercial for that thing, I would think to myself "Gee, I wonder how that works without smashing the egg to pieces". Well, I eventually ended up having my mom by it for me and guess what? The egg intended for colorization ended up being smashed to pieces. You won that round, Dudley…

I love all things grape-flavored. The fact that Our Benefactor His Eightiness The Matt hates the stuff means "more for me! Wooo!"

Grape juice, grape soda, grape Gatorade, grape Kool-Aid…but not wine…I’m not the hooch type.

Ghosted by Monster Dog @ 03/27/2005 11:14 PM EST

Continuity error, why is this article labelled 929 when the delicious sticker article was 931? some future X-E fanatic will believe they’re reading them in order, but will be sorely mistaken, and if they’re OCD for chronology like I am then blood will be shed.

Ghosted by Brentantation @ 03/27/2005 11:41 PM EST

My wife and stepdaughters made it on the cover of the European Stars and Stripes this past Sunday. How cool is that?

Manimal, Em is adorable! :) Wish I could find those shrink wraps for the eggs, they only had the egg dye kits here.

Tropical Punch! I could guzzle that stuff ALL DAY LONG.

Ghosted by Ryane @ 03/28/2005 1:31 AM EST

How can Kool Aid man go diving underwater? Wouldn’t his life essence, the fruit punch, get diluted very quickly? Or is the so-called "Kool-Aid" inside him really a liquid that’s like oil, so it doesn’t mix with water?

We had a bunch of old Kool-Aid packets lying around our cupboard, but I think we tossed it out when we moved.

RE-POST: "HAPPY EASTER!! We are about to dye eggs right now. I will send some pics later.
Erik, forgive me for not saying this sooner: CONGRATULATIONS! Keep us posted."
Erik, I didnt want you to miss my message.
In retrospect, I wish the eggs were clearer in the first picture. D’oh!

My favorite three Kool-Aid flavors in order:

3) Sharkleberry Fin
2) Berry Blue
1) Purplesaurus Rex

And in homage to Purplesaurus Rex, if you want to be a pain in the butt to your bartender, ask for a cocktail containing 50% (actual) lemonade, 40% vodka, and 10% grape soda. The bar I frequent happens to carry grape soda. Anyway, it is a very reasonable alcoholic version of Purplesaurus Rex… Love the stuff!

Ghosted by jack burton @ 03/28/2005 7:49 AM EST

Fave flavor? Berry Blue or one that was green…don’t remember the name. All I know is we used to drink shitloads of Kool Aid and then send away for stuff with the Kool Aid points- got a great frisbee and some other things. My brother kept all the points in a very professional briefcase, where we also kept Popsicle sticks that had points on ‘em.

Hope everyone had a Happy Easter, in the countries where it was celebrated (I would KILL for a cadbury creme egg right about now- damn Korea).

B) I’m bound to find them and read everything about their hobby.

Hey peeps, thought you might like to know I have in fact seen SHARKLEBERRY FIN KOOL AID in Salt Lake City, Utah. In December at the West Valley Harmons.

Ghosted by Underpants @ 03/28/2005 11:46 AM EST

My fave. is just plain old grape or red.

Ghosted by Shannon @ 03/28/2005 12:03 PM EST

One of my faves, before the diabetes, was that stuff they had for 4th of July one time. A red concoction that came with a packet of Pop Rocks- like substance that you mix in right before serving. Kool-Aid that sizzled and popped! Ain’t technology grand?

Just in case Muppet baby missed it on the last page, here it is again:
Dancing Chocolate!

CHERRY CRACKER! :D

When my mom heard sharkleberry was going to stop being made a long time ago. She sent to every grocery store around our Dallas home. She spend around 90 bucks on it all and if you do the math it is alot of kool aid. We drank like kings for a long time and now we only have about 20 remaining packets, I have a couple pinned to my bulletin board as decoration. Thanks for the site it brought back memories.

Ghosted by LJ Beckman @ 03/28/2005 12:41 PM EST

Awww man… my friend and me once got a bag of puffy wise cheez doodles to snack on in high school sole because it came with a free pouch of sharkelberry, so it was like a whole meal.

But being the idiots we were we mixed it with salt by mistake. We each drank about a half a cup before we even realized what we did.

Ghosted by toddis @ 03/28/2005 1:07 PM EST

I’m sorry, but the most unstoppable liquid ever created in a factory by human beings is Mountain Berry Kool-Aid. Even as an adult, I know that if I found that stuff, I’d drink nearly a gallon a day. That, of course, could lead to some disastrous diabetic effects, but you only go around once!

Ghosted by Ian @ 03/28/2005 1:14 PM EST

That was a kick asssss artical, so much to read!!!! Thanks Matt.
Oh yeah! But who didnt live on kool-aid as a child! My fav were Orange and Sharkleberry fin fo sho!…I could really go for some kool-aid right about now!

Ghosted by IHAQ @ 03/28/2005 1:30 PM EST

That R2-D2 egg is totally awesome!

Last year, in this dusty Mom and Pop grocery store, I bought a big can of Rockadile Red Kool-Aid that’s almost 10 years old! I still have it, un-opened, and it watches me every night in my sleep plotting it’s attack..
