Milton Bradley’s FIREBALL ISLAND!

Yay, done. Sorry, had some siiide business going on and it had to take precedence, because I wanted a reason to use the word "precedence." But now I'm here, and we are one again. Bet you thought it'd feel more special. Specialer? Course, I'm zipping back out in a minute anyway, so don't get used to me, I'll only disappoint. Before the big return to my casket of choice, as Uncle Louis would say, the blesss-sing: Fireball Island was one of the best games ever in the entire world, and clicking that link will take you to my tribute hof hit. It's the tale of multicolored explorers traveling the uncharted jungle on the hunt for jewels and on the run from fireballs, told at last.

I actually had this game. It was missing half the pieces when I got it from a yard sale, though, and I dunno where it went–probably somewhere in the attic…

Hey Matt… I have some pics I have to send to you. I found a full size replica of He-Man’s sword.

Ok, so I gotta ask… what’s that "Fake Jewel" card do? The other’s look self-explanatory, but…

Does it let you swipe the jewel back from somebody who’s already gotten it, or what?

Chestnuts roasted by Captain Caveman @ 01/26/2005 10:17 PM

I know a game very similar, TORNADO REX.Check that out on ebay!!

Chestnuts roasted by james @ 01/26/2005 10:28 PM

Players frequently steal the jewel from each other during games — by issuing a fake jewel card when somebody is in clear position to take it from you, you get to keep it — by giving them a "fake jewel."

I had dizzy devil. I couldnt think of the name until I read the post. It rocked my socks. Picture this game, only with a plastic devil spinner top that you could launch instead of the ball.

oh i had this game when i was a wee-lad, but my mom threw it away….tater sauce…

Chestnuts roasted by neo @ 01/26/2005 10:43 PM

Never had it, but my babysitter’s kid had it. We usually ended up playing Crossfire or Mousetrap.

Anyone ever played the Dukes of Hazzard board game? My cousins had it, but somewhere through the years, they got rid of it in favor of their immense collection of Scruples and Trivial Pursuit. Damn, sez me. Damn, damn. Wait, I’ll say it thrice. Damn, damn, d-a-m-n…thrice? Who says thrice?

[you get to keep it -- by giving them a "fake jewel."]

Oooooh. I like that even better. More underhanded and such.

Chestnuts roasted by Captain Caveman @ 01/26/2005 10:49 PM

Fireball Island? Now that sounds sweet… and I thought Crossfire was the coolest game ever.

That game looks spifftastic. They should bring it back and update it with flashing marbles and glowing terrain. That would be cool. If they could combine Fireball Island, Hungry, Hungry Hippos, and Crossfire into one game, that would be even better.

I must admit that when I look at the picture of that guy on the Fireball! card, he appears as though he’s saying "Talk to the hand cause the fireball don’t wanna hear it no mo". Also, "My hat is slightly askew. Ah man my hair is messed u…OHSHITAFIREBALLRUNBITCHRUN!"

Then again, I didn’t get much sleep today.

Yes! Thanks for the review – I had this game as a kid and it kicked ass, damn I wish I still had it.

OMG FIREBALL ISLAND!! My friends and I were talking about this game just the other day, except we couldn’t remember the name of it, thank you Matt, I can now forgive you for leaving us without an article for so long

I don’t know why, but I have the comemrcial jingle for "Crossfire" in my head now…"CROSSFIIIIRE!"- It was so rock n’ roll.

O…M…G. I LOVED this game! Infact, I still have it, preserved wonderfully in the closet, one room over.

I made a modification to the board, though … I took a piece of clay and made a dam near the end of the "river" so that I could really fill it up with water. :D

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 01/27/2005 12:16 PM

Before you think Mouse Trap was the most elaborate board game ever, I had something called Screwball Scramble where to play it, you had to set up an entire course for a ball bearing to roll around in. And it was a COURSE, folks–I forget how one was supposed to actually play it, but why was that important when you could make the ball go crazy? That one’s got the record, unless someone here knows what beat IT.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 01/27/2005 12:53 PM

Oh yeah…THE OMEGA VIRUS. I should have mentioned that one instead, though I didn’t own it, a friend did. THE OMEGA VIRUS is a board game that tries to win itself, basically, and you have to beat it or the space station it’s attacking will be taken over. You could just remove its batteries, but then you wouldn’t constantly get grunted verbal barbs like "I…will…destroy you…FOOL!" Boy, we loved saying that….and it DOES win itself; it’s way too hard to beat it.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 01/27/2005 12:56 PM

That guy from C.O.P.S. you mentioned, with the brain in a bowl? His name was Dr. Bad Vibes. He was my favorite villain from that show, and i even wrote a poem about him when I was a schoolboy:

There once was a man named Dr. Bad Vibes
Who always hated amusement rides
He worked for Big Boss
Who liked to eat moss
Dr. Bad Vibes led a thousand enemy tribes

Ah, Fireball Island. I will never, ever, in a million years, ever, forget the hours and hours of joy that this piece of plastic provided. On my death bed, I will recall fondly to my grandchildren the happiness that accompanied "killing" my friends with those fiery red marbles.
