12/21/2004: The Christmas Sushi Roll!

Everything’s updated. The link for the new Advert download is incorrect – I’ll fix that when I get home. It’s almost Christmas – this is probably the first year of my life that I’m actually more into Christmas itself that all the shit leading up to it. I’ve long touted the magnanimous glories of preliminary anticipation, but the combination of having zero time and having so much to do is making me look forward to what Christmas is really all about: a few days off and a fuckload of food. Finally finished shopping for my 10,000 relatives, and I must say, I am Santa Claus Reincarnate. I had no less than a dozen kids ages 1-15 to get gifts for, and through the magic of Amazon clearances and pot luck, it looks like I spent twice as much as I actually did. One of the best finds was for one of my younger nieces – it’s a big ass “Bratz” playset that normally goes for 110 bucks, marked down to 20. I’m living proof that people remember the gifts they got for decades and decades, and I know this particular niece will connect every success and moment of happiness of her life to the day I gave her the god damned stupid Bratz playset. Go me.

There’s a small group of us at work who order sushi for lunch roughly six times a day. In my short time being here, I’ve gotten much braver with what’ll try. (the Advent Calendar’s sushi entry was semi-inspired by this) I started off with California rolls, moved on to the many non-fishy fun rods, ultimately ending up where the party starts: raw fish, and lots of it. Though I’m not really down with the octopus crap and all that kinda junk yet, it’s becoming progressively harder to resist certain “specialty” rolls because the restaurants give ‘em such cool names. I mean, really, a “Godzilla Roll?” How am I supposed to turn down a chance to order food using the word “Godzilla?”

There’s a topical twist to all this: the pile of sushi shown in the lower part of that picture is called a Christmas Roll, a festive special combining rice, seaweed, avocado, caviar and too much raw tuna to create a Christmas-colored mass of something not from this world. I couldn’t really eat the thing (I can deal with the raw crap in small doses, but in fist-sized piles like that, I need hickory smoking), but it’s so pretty to look at. Perhaps I can have it shellacked and mounted on a stand among the many plastic Santas I sleep beside. Roe your boat.

What are you guys doing for Christmas this year?

Lest ye wonder why the bitterness, I grew up Catholic…in Boston. You think Michael Jackson’s bad…some of my friends learned firsthand that "spreading God’s love" means something different in Bernard Law’s world.

just discovered this site not too long ago, early december. been diggin it. thought i’d leave a note here. the octopii and squid really are freakin awesome, they’re up in my top ten.
the concha thing…i’ve heard of a conch salad, but they didn’t eat it squirming. that may help making it a bit more palatable. being raised in the boonies, i’ve eaten a lot…raw maybe, but not alive.

You know, I think you can eat the testicles of sea urchins. Yea, I think I saw that on some cooking show. Ah, as for christmas… Spending it with my family and watching Strangers with Candy with my cat Henry after all the festivities are over. SCABS!

Matt,

I just watched the Fruity Pebbles commercial. My Christmas is now complete. But I seem to remember at the end Fred would say "Merry Christmas, Barn" and not Happy Holidays. Am I imagining this or is this just another attempt to erase anything Christmas? Although you have to wonder how Fred even know about Christmas since he was alive 1,000,000 years BC!

For the first time in (number deleted, but too damn many) years, I will NOT be finishing my shopping on the 24th. I do, however, get to spend the 24th and 25th visiting family and friends of my other half. Lots of food but no raw fish. Well, can’t have everything!:)
BTW, that Lego-Thriller thing is great!

I also saw that lego-Thriller video. Funny!

Matt, keep up the good work on the Advent Calendar!

Watching Rankin-Bass animation and drinking egg-nog until I drop.

My favorite has always been "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." Something about Burger-Meister Meister-Burger falling on his ass makes me laugh out loud…

Hey! I’m Spanish! so I might be of service for once…
Yes, here many sorts of clams are eaten alive…just like dogs, parrots and some sort whales…well, no…just the clams, but the idea of eating whales alive is quite amusing.

Also we’re pretty evil when cooking whatever we is that we cook. For example, practically all shellfish has to be alive when it gets boiled…pretty disgusting sight…really!

Lucky me, I only have two cousins and one nephew in the ‘toy age’ to shop for. The two little girls will be getting My Little Ponies because 1) I’m feeling nostalgic and 2) They’re still too young to really care what the toy is as long as it’s a toy. Have to cherish those years. :P

Now if I can only keep myself from taking them out of their boxes and playing with them.

Christmas in my household always follows this schedule:

Christmas Eve Day: Order out and watch a marathon of whatever Christmas movies are on TV/in our archives

Christmas Eve: Attend church, come home and watch several hours of A Christmas Story, and I usually check X-E before I go to bed for any last minute Christmas stuff I missed. Oh, and there is also an annual special around here called "Christmas in Central NY." The local news team travels around the area and films what the various towns do for Christmas. It’s so sappy and I love it.

Christmas morning: See what Santa brought us (my youngest brother is 9, so we still do Santa) and then open up the presents under the tree once everyone is awake.

Christmas afternoon: Christmas dinner at our relatives in Baldwinsville, NY.

Ghosted by Jeff Mack @ 12/22/2004 11:51 AM EST

Don’t talk to me about live food. If you’ve ever seen "Dances with Wolves", you know how plains tribes really felt about the buffalo meat. Chomp! Bloody good.

Poor monster dog, first the Spanish Inquisition, now this. As a lapsed Baptist, allow me to pass on this advice gleaned from my childhood in Oakland, Ca.: At least once in your life, attend Christmas sevices at a African-American church. Sometimes, just being in the presence of unbridled Joy is enough.

After I get done w/ my finals I’m going to hang out with some friends I havent seen since the semester started then spend the holiday itself w/ my family.

Christmas Eve, I start wrapping at about 11:30 while watching the Christmas Story. Do that until about 3, go to bed, get up at 9 to make breakfast for my brother, sis-in-law, grandmom and mom, eat, open presents, watch more Christmas Story until it’s time to go to my Aunt’s for dinner.

Christmas Day will be spent at the boyfriend’s house, pretending like I get along with his family (it’s been almost 3 years; it doesn’t look good that relations will improve.). But Christmas night…ah, Christmas night. Dad and I are flying to Vegas! It’ll be the first time for both of us, so hopefully it will be grand fun. Thought the boyfriend would be bummed that he isn’t going, but (a) he has to work and (b) he’s getting a DS for Christmas and feels fairly confident he’d ignore me that whole week anyway…

Erik, I agree with Nikkii–jewelry is always a winner. Just make sure it’s something mid-priced, and that she can wear around her neck or on her ears…why, you ask? Because she’ll probably want to wear it while she’s pregnant, and she won’t be able to wear a ring (and possibly not even a bracelet) because of the swelling. Make it mid-priced because when the baby is born, a super-fantastic gift of jewelry (better than last year’s Christmas gift) is traditional. Possibly another piece to go with the Christmas gift?…but that’s just my humble opinion.

On Saturday, we’ll sleep late for the first Christmas in 4 years and open presents. Then we’ll drive south for three hours to see MY family. I’m on ‘His Family Overload’ right now because they live in town. Ta-da!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU MATT!!!!!!
As much as I like Jim Cumming’s work, I’m so glad you went with the "classic" Santa Pebbles ad. I don’t know why they went through the trouble of redubbing Santa’s line with a new actor for the more recent airings the past few years, but this how my childhood heard this ad, and now I have a copy of it! This alone should earn you a Merry Christmas from this old fogey. (For those of you who think 31 is "old".)

I’ll be visiting my aunt and uncle, the same as every Christmas Eve. And I’ll be half dead from working at the grocery store like I’ve been every Christmas Eve (except for last year) since I started working there. Thankfully, I have Christmas off, where I might be going to my cousins. *After* opening my gifts. :D

I’ll be spending Christmas at work in West Africa. No family, just a bunch of oil workers. Happy happy joy joy. The only good things about this Christmas are the Advent calendar and finding out my wife is pregnant.

Keep up the great work Matt. (On the calendar, not getting my wife pregnant, at least I hope not.)

Christmas in Korea this year- my 1st Xmas away from home…me and the 12 other foreign english teachers are going skiing to ensure we have a white Xmas!! I still havent seen snow here. So, tonight (23rd) is "Xmas night" at our apartment where we’ll open everything and watch "Charlie Brown", "The Grinch" (original) and "Muppet Family Xmas" before heading to bed early and gettin up at 5 AM for skiing…

Unfortunately, I will be in the mountains and won’t be able to see how the advent calendar ends until AFTER Xmas….but Mare, Claire and the gang will be in my thoughts, along with Matt and everyone else at XE. Awwww :)

Have a Holly Jolly One!

I think I saw the phrase Dues Ex Machina in there somewhere…

Just like all evil villians, Claire spilled the beans about her Christmas Eve disaster. Sigh… Oh, eveil villiams, when will you learn?
Also, is it foreshadowing that the dog is covered in redness? Maybe this has something to do w/ the Time Machine? Which one of the Storm Troopers had a dog just like that when he was little? Will these questions get answered? Will turkeys fly out of Megamare’s butt? Tune in tomorrow. Same Bat time. Same Bat channel.

The dog’s got ketchup on him. The time machine is gonna work really well, or as well as it worked in DBZ. It never really took Trunks directly back to his own timeline’s past, it skipped sideways a bit, then back. But seein’ as there are no Lego DeLoreans about, Bulma’s capsule will do. Tick…. tick…. tick…. tick…. leech…. tick….

If the dog has ketchup on him, does that mean that MEGAMARE will eat him? Personally, I hope that they save Santa and put Claire in the box with the bomb. Now THAT would be awesome.
oh yeah, and a shout out to Matt again: I hope you realize how important this site is to so many of us. For most, YOU have made X-MAS the event that it was in our younger years, and for that we are all greatful. Keep up all the hardwork and good stuff, you are doing an incredible job.

Greetings from Germany again!

Baby Update:

Well, went in for the second ultrasound and it certainly was memorable. Just seeing the life you created and watching the heartbeat is awesome. No word on the sex yet as the doctor couldn’t tell (keep praying for a boy people, as unlike Matt’s clan, this is my one shot at a son and unsure if my in laws will want to have children and give me a nephew to spoil). We are at 9 weeks with a margin of error of 1.5 weeks, though we and the doctor lean toward the 10.5 week prediction. We go back in a month.

Trajeal- Again, thanks for the wonderful baby links. A baby growing is truly awesome to see. I sat there engrossed for about an hour surfing the sites. As this is my first baby, her third, she doesn’t really get into the whole “baby stuff” as a newbie father like me.

She didn’t have a middle name, so that when she married, her last name became that, which I thought was cool.

Boy- We are pretty much set on Brett David Majorwitz. Brett for Green Bay Packers Iroman QB Brett Favre as he was on the tube playing when we found out and David is her father’s name. It also is the name of Houston Texans QB David Carr, so it works twofold. It also happens to be the sunflower seeds I’m craving everyday, which disgusts her to no end to see me spitting them everywhere.

Girl- Leaning towards Emily (thanks by the way for the gift suggestions but the coincidence of us thinking of your name and you posting locked it in for me), but not sure what for the middle name. I had two great aunts named Emily and Marie…

Her dad is David O. (won’t reveal the middle but I’m sure you know any O name is bad) and mom is Pamela.

My mom’s name is Mary Elizabeth, though Elizabeth is already taken by my youngest stepdaughter’s middle name and my father that passed away was named Frank Edward.

Hope that helps Trajeal, work your magic.

Congratulations are in order for bishopX. Hope you and your wife are happy about it as I am about my future bundle of joy.

Muppet Baby- It has already snowed here in Germany, I’m sure I could FedEx you some down there via MPS. I’m alittle disappointed that I only have one more Kinder Egg on my Advent Calendar to open, but I’m hoping I can find some more the day after Christmas…Though I think eating 24 Kinder Eggs for a meal is a bit excessive.

Last but not least…Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!

Semper Fi,
Erik Majorwitz

P.S. Matt, my wife loved the mushroom recipe, but she is still peeved you don’t like the taste of Kinder Egg Chocolate.

"Emily Marie" is just beautiful…I love that! Kinda want to change my name now…

Emily is a great name. There’s really nothing to rhyme with it, therefore she will have a tease-free childhood. (Ha.) Everyone calls me Em or Emmy, so that would be in her future. I was supposed to be Emily Claire, but my dad vetoed it. I ended up being Emily Erin Bridget because no one could make a freaking decision between the two middle names.

I’m still pulling for a boy for you, though! Good luck!

Wow, you have a lot of names to work w/, Erik. Let’s see, what about Emily Francis (after your dad)? I was just as excited over baby #3 as I was baby #1. I get a little excessive, though. :-) I’m glad you liked the sites. It’s cool to see a dad who’s jsut as excited about the baby as the mom. have you been to babycenter.com? They have bulletin boards for every EDD month. So, she’s due in late June/early July, or thereabouts? Try here: http://bbs.babycenter.com/board/bbshome/bbs-birthclubs/birthclubs2005/1379764 Here’s a Dad’s Zone that you might like to check out: http://parentcenter.bbs.babycenter.com/boards/bbs-preg

Congratulation to bishopX! Wow, two babies now.

Good luck, Sam! Did you get her a ring?

Wow, good feelings all around. That’s why this site is always the first place I check in the morning, and the last one I visit before bed. No matter how insane the holiday traffic/shopping/cooking/begging can get, there’s always a little bit of childhood (in one form or another) to remind me why we celebtrate this holiday in the first place. Thanks, Matt.

Tonight while finishing up my shopping, I found some new and appealing additions to the candy aisle. One them caught my eye the most – Candy Cane Tootsie pops!

Candy cane surrounding the tootsie roll center. Best idea ever. Check your local Savon for them.

I’ve been feeling less Christmas-y due to the replacement of "Happy Holidays" for "Merry Christmas" for reasons I find kind of ridiculous. I’m sure on the 25th I’ll be good to go, but I just find the whole thing crazy. Soon it’ll become "Have a Satisfactory, Politically Correct, Non-Specific, Winter Themed Rest Period".

As far as this year goes, it’ll be the same as previous. Our relatives are too lazy to celebrate together, so it’s just clusters of families doing their regular Christmas thang of eating a lot and opening stuff. I just hope that this year, and years to come, I don’t start to give or recieve practical things (Toys. R. Us. Kid. Re. Pre. Sent.). It just doesn’t fit when someone gets soap in a wicker basket.

Suggestions to EMajorwitz: Off the top of my head, Emily Catherine/Alexandra/Jane/Louise. Basically, I’d go with any middle name that flows well with the first name.
