12/02/2004: X-E’s 2004 Christmas Season has begun!

It’s here, it’s here, it’s finally here!  For those with a sour cache, yes, X-E is in it’s 2004 Christmas Season, celebrating the launch of the third annual X-Entertainment Advent Calendar, and the first annual X-Entertainment Advert Calendar!  Mare Winningham returns to X-E over on the Advent, while Christmas-themed commercials of the past are posted everyday until Christmas over on the Advert.  I’d like to thank my good friend Brian Jacks for slaving over the new design for us and putting up with my shit, along with Jaime and Mike, who also helped make this all possible.  Oh, and even if you’ve seen it already, you may wanna check out the new Christmas Jukebox one more time.  X-E mixmaker, Tummi, has been kind enough to reorganize the files, fix the volumes, and add a few more choice selections — including the Del Rubio Triplets’ classic rendition of “Winter Wonderland” from Pee-wee’s Christmas Special. There is sooo much more to come, but sadly, I’ve gotta go.  Discuss, be merry.  The fun really begins next week!

X-E Christmas celebration!

Posted by Rinse Cycle @ 12/02/2004 10:02 PM EST

THE MADNESS BEGINS!

I hope Mare becomes evil again, but even if she doesn’t, the stormtrooper duo is awesome.

BTW, any plans for other familiar figures to stop by as the month goes on?

Posted by Behonkiss @ 12/02/2004 10:10 PM EST

People seem to forget that Gremlins is a Christmas movie.  But it is.

Because it’s either a Christmas movie or a horror movie - except that it’s really not that scary (except if you’re 6 years old)

*Woot* first X-E Christmas!!!

My first X-E Christmas too! Playmobile rules! They must be from Outer Space!

Finally!  My first X-E Christmas!  This is what I’ve been waiting for all year long, and for the first time in five years, I’m actually excited about Christmas!  And the site looks great!

Whoo-hoo! My 2nd X-E Christmas…

Lego Stormies rock!

Posted by Cameron T. @ 12/02/2004 10:40 PM EST

All RIGHT! The beginning of another great Christmas advent calender…with Stormtroopers! This is gonna be the best Christmas ever. Mare Winningham, "Star Wars" Legos, fireplaces, and Engergizer batteries. It’s awesome already, and we’re only at the third day of the month.

Nice job on the Christmas design, too, Matt and company. I especially like the icons and the "stickers" on the Trapper Keeper/Blog. :)

Love it, love it, love it!

I love how Mare’s first words are a Tim Curry/Worst Witch quote.

Posted by John @ 12/02/2004 10:47 PM EST

Matt you are too good to us.  Also I don’t know if you saw this or not, but the ghost of Christmas specials past have released a DVD of Rudolph, Frosty, Frosty2, and one other christmas special that eludes me.  Just thought I’d let you know, seems like something you *might* be interested in.

Posted by Gimpy421 @ 12/02/2004 10:56 PM EST

Dude, Matt, the playlist rules!  But what about Linkin Park "My December"?

All I want for Xmas is another Bitner post….

Posted by Kirk @ 12/02/2004 10:59 PM EST

Would it be too much to ask that you never remove this design and devote the entire site to Chirstmas forever?

Posted by Yar @ 12/02/2004 11:03 PM EST

Yay! It’s beautiful Matt.

Posted by Kay @ 12/02/2004 11:11 PM EST

I’am all teary, this is so great! I must control myself and not read December 3 until tomorrow though. It’s hard.

Posted by Mara @ 12/02/2004 11:13 PM EST

Damn! That is a killer rendition of ‘Carol Of The Bells’!

Posted by gramsci @ 12/02/2004 11:16 PM EST

Gotta say, the advent calendar made me LOL!!!  It’s a PUPPY!!!!!!!  I also liked that ass-shot of Mare Winningham.  Hot hot hot hot hot!

I’ll hafta blast the x-mas jukebox in celebration of the holiday season.  My whole dorm is gonna love me (my ASS)!

Posted by Nate @ 12/03/2004 1:47 AM EST

Yar, that might be a bit much, but maybe every six months since there is so much material to cover.

Another option would be to follow the stores and start the coverage on November 1st.  Macy’s Parade would fit into that format.

Posted by ME @ 12/03/2004 1:56 AM EST

Why are all the ad files titled "X-E CHRISTMAS87"? Does this mean they’re all from the 1987 Macy’s tape?

And what of the cartoon specials you accumulated from people(and I know you did)? Are they being saved for 2005?

Posted by Mars @ 12/03/2004 2:00 AM EST

It’s great having an advert and advent calendar. And the layout is great too.

Posted by pikachulover @ 12/03/2004 3:09 AM EST

Matt, I did finally get home to check out your playlist.  What an excellent addition to the X-E Christmas season.

Oh, & the top banner is crooked here on the blog, dude.  You might want to fix that.  Or make your web designer guy fix that.

Posted by Mike Fireball @ 12/03/2004 4:19 AM EST

"Rulebreakers aren’t good, save for the early stages of one "Stone Cold" Steve Austin’s face turn."

I remember the good ol’ days of the WWE back then.  Damn I miss those times.  "And that’s the bottom line, cuz Stone Cold said so!!!"

Posted by J-Dog @ 12/03/2004 9:39 AM EST

Been a looooooong time since I’ve seen Jacko. OY! Love the new format. Christmas has truly begun.

Posted by jhnnywalkr @ 12/03/2004 9:41 AM EST

Congrats, Brian & Matt. Strange.. my brother’s name is Brian and mine is Matt. Brainfreeze. Anyway, the site looks great. Finally X-E is back to the way it’s supposed to be, all covered with Christmas goodness. To me this is the best time to be a reader/poster around here. It doesn’t get better than a good old fashioned X-E Christmas.. down on the farm. A little overeatin’ never did you any harm.

Oops.. almost lost myself there. Can’t wait to see what’s coming to the site this Christmas.

Posted by Matt(#2?) @ 12/03/2004 10:12 AM EST

Thanks, Matt! December has officially become a Xmas countdown! Love the layout, and wow- an advent AND an adVERT calendar? We don’t deserve such goodness.  I’m loving it all so far- keep up the goodness.

Posted by Muppet Baby @ 12/03/2004 10:52 AM EST

Matt- just listened to the Xmas jukebox……..Wham’s "Last Christmas"……..thank you! Great stuff! :)

In the middle of finals and hadn’t checked X-E since the first Thanksgiving Day parade came up.  Thanks for a site I can read when I’m about to have a nervous breakdown–you put it all into perspective for me.  I mean, it could be worse; I could have NO FACE.  Awesome.  Love the Christmas jukebox.  Now, the only thing missing is Charo.  Waitaminute…

Posted by Emily @ 12/03/2004 11:15 AM EST

HOLY SH*T!  Mele Kalikimaka!  Haven’t heard this since I was little.  Sniff.  Thanks, Matt.  I think I have the strength to go on living through schoolwork now.  You’re the best.

Posted by Emily @ 12/03/2004 11:19 AM EST

Ah, my first XE Christmas! Am glad to be part of this where i’ve been seeing countdowns as they happen (The Halloween countdown, and now the X-mas Advent calendar) Can’t wait to see if Mare is really good, or just waiting for the right time to turn back into the b*tch we know and love (or hate, depending on what side of the fence you’re on!) So keep up the great work Matt, and I’ll keep comin back everyday for the countdown.

Side note: Recently when I typed Giant Ape Juice in Google the first 2 sites that came up were for X-Entertainment. I dunno how to explain that…unless search engines act differently to us Canucks (Canadians, for those that don’t know :D)

Posted by Jabo @ 12/03/2004 11:37 AM EST

A ‘vent and a ‘vert all in one site!  Woo-hah!  Mare may be on the side of the angels for now, but with the two troopers hounding her, I’m waiting for the breakdown.

Posted by kingklash @ 12/03/2004 11:52 AM EST

eight-bit, I was 6 when I saw Gremlins and It traumatized me so much I don’t open my curtains from age 6 till now…(i’m 17)

Hey Matt, ever consider reviewing A Claymation Christmas? That special gurantees a spot on the Best Xmas Specials I Ever Saw List…and I have it on VHS that I taped when it first aired…I have no idea if I still have it though.

On that or a similar-looking VHS tape, I also have Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, the Garfield Christmas Special, and Frosty The Snowman…again, I have no idea if I still have it…

Posted by Invader Norbert @ 12/03/2004 12:08 PM EST

To be truthful… I like Thanksgiving better these days :)

Posted by AngeFaitore @ 12/03/2004 12:22 PM EST

Invader Norbert: Claymation Christmas is available on DVD now, and I agree that it is perfect x-e material, IMO.

Posted by Cameron T. @ 12/03/2004 12:31 PM EST

"Would it be too much to ask that you never remove this design and devote the entire site to Chirstmas forever?"

I agree. Then I’ll never have to do a redesign again. For ever and ever.

Dear God…I have no recollection of that Energizer commericial, but it’s easily one of the best commericials I’ve ever seen.  The moment where the dude shouts ‘OY!’ at those bastard kids…Holy shit, I lost it…Perfect.

Posted by Bill Cosby's Sweater @ 12/03/2004 12:36 PM EST

Nope, here in the States, X-E is still #3 for Giant Ape Juice, despite yesterday’s efforts. But, lets not get back into that today.
Oddly enough, as an experiment, I changed it to "Ape Juice Giant" and X-E was #1 and 2. That’s some weird wild stuff man.

Posted by jhnnywalkr @ 12/03/2004 12:42 PM EST

That Energizer ad… one word…

HEIDENREICH.

Posted by Rein @ 12/03/2004 1:03 PM EST

I love the besantahatted Krang!! Great job on sprucing up the place!

Posted by B-Dawg @ 12/03/2004 1:12 PM EST

Matt-Okay, so I see you have David the Gnome at the bottom of the homepage.  Now there’s nothing wrong with David in and of himself, but why would you include it in the x-mas layout.  I mean, Iknow he’s wearing a red hat and looks like Santa Claus and all, but there’s really nothing to actually associate him with Christmas.  I mean, he didn’t have a Christmas special like all the other characters that you’ve depicted on the homepage, did he?

On second thought, maybe he did.  Hmm.

Posted by Nate @ 12/03/2004 1:39 PM EST

Matt-Oh, another thing.  One song in your jukebox, "Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer," doesn’t work.  Disappointing indeed.

Posted by Nate @ 12/03/2004 1:41 PM EST

Who’s sposta dig? I’m sposta dig. Uh-huh.

Nice work, Brian! Tons of detail - I love it. I really like the buttons at the bottom of the pages. They look good in red like that.

Awesome Advent so far. I love the movie/tv show references you always stick in your articles. Recognizing them are sometimes my favorite parts. They make me make my "O" face.

Mare reminds me of Ami from this season of Survivor. She seems so sweet and smiley, but when the claws come out, run for the hills! They even have the same hairstyle. I’m more scared of Mare than ever.

Matt, have you ever reviewed Ed and His Dead Mother? Now there’s a cinematic marterpiece just waiting to be reviewed. Much love for Steve Buschemi. ;-)

I have yet to listen to the Christmas Playlist. I’m hoping it includes some Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

My six year old just told my 3 year old how to win at Super Mario Melee - "If you want to win, you have to try and not get blowed up, or die or anything." Great advice, I think.

Posted by trajeal @ 12/03/2004 1:53 PM EST

I was only expecting the Advent calendar so to see the 1st Annual Advert calendar was a cool surprise!  Matt, you truly are the man!

Posted by J-Dog @ 12/03/2004 2:18 PM EST

Hey! Forget Giant Ape Juice, we’re #1 for "Mare Winningham Christmas."

So Matt (and Brian)- excellent job with this XE Christmas stuff. I love it! Yay! I can’t wait for tomorrow now…

Posted by Rainbowfeet @ 12/03/2004 2:31 PM EST

One more thing, the Christmas jukebox kicks MAJOR ass!

I’m lovin it!  Yooooooooooo!!!

Posted by J-Dog @ 12/03/2004 2:31 PM EST

Sigh… Aww, the Chipmunks singing "Christmas, Don’t Be Late" just hit me in the Nostalgia Bone. Man, I had that record. I could practically hear the needle scratchings in that recording. I used to listen to it w/ my Strawberry Shortcake record. "Hello, Moms and Dads. Brothers and sisters. Cats and Dogs. Welcome to the world of Strawberry Shortcake!" Man, you seriously made my day.

What a wonderful time of year. This is my third x-entertainment xmas, and i have to say i’m loving it so far. Mare is back who could ask for more. The only thing i’m slightly dissappointed about is that some of the songs on your jukebox cutoff at the end. If possible could you fix this. thanx

Thanx for mentioning the claymation xmas whoever you were.
it’s my second favorite xmas special, (A year without a santa claus is my first)

Excellent Advent Calendar, Matt. Truly excellent!

Posted by 4thDown @ 12/03/2004 3:20 PM EST

But what happens when another Mare Winningham shows up? C’mon, you know there’s at least one of the sluts in there somewhere.

I haven’t listened to the jukebox yet, but am I right in thinking that "Christmas at Ground Zero" by Weird Al Yankovic is there? God, I hope so, or my Xmas will just suck.

Posted by A-wel Cruiz @ 12/03/2004 4:08 PM EST

Aw, Jimmie Eat World? Man, you rock!

Posted by trajeal @ 12/03/2004 4:22 PM EST

Good job on the xmas layout and the new Macy’s review that I finally saw. I hope i’m not THAT old if I decide to go back to working McD’s (and the Dad in the other one looks like the guy from Perfect Strangers. WTF?)

By the way, do you ever get tired of people drooling all over you? Just watching it annoys the fuck out of me… constantly needing towel-in-hand and whatnot.

Posted by Greg @ 12/03/2004 5:25 PM EST

p.s. I have oodles of 80s xmas garbage if you’re interested. Email me for more info (see website).

Posted by Greg @ 12/03/2004 5:27 PM EST

I must say that I don’t make it a practice to drool over Matt, unless he’s standing beneath me and I’ve recently had a Novacaine shot. However, I do do the Dance of Joy when I see he’s mentioned/quoted/played something that I love and recognize.

That’s all, I guess.

LONG LIVE KUSE!

Posted by bdsghost @ 12/03/2004 6:20 PM EST

I hereby will make it a New Year’s Resolution to drool over Matt more.  Anyone who can get me out of a study-induced funk is high on the droolable list, indeed.

I took a desperate study break to go buy "Barenaked for the Holidays" today, just because I heard them on the Jukebox today.  And then I sang ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ at the top of my lungs, all the way home.

Posted by Gimpy421 @ 12/03/2004 10:13 PM EST

Mare Winningham is good? Either she’s plotting something or the voodoo didn’t work properly and she isn’t actually Mare. I say we start a pool on when she turns evil again. I call December 24th, or at least the entry that is supposed to fall on December 24th because I’m not going to demand a post from Matt on Christmas eve. I work at the freakin mall, I’ll be too tired to read it when I get home anyway.

Dear X-E,

I am a faithful reader with lots of xe experience and I noticed every year around December you refer to it as the "Christmas season" well I have something to say about this I am a festive young man and I have a request for the fair nature of this season. Can you now refer to this so-called "Christmas season" to the Holiday season because as we may know Christmas isn’t the only holiday there’s also Hannnaka, Kwanzzua, Festivus, and many Middle Eastern holidays. I don’t mean to be durative, but it would show a little fairness if you would please refer to this wonderful season to X-E’s Holiday Season 2004. -Thanks

        Yours Truly

I just saw two of the most beautiful things that occupy my otherwise rinkeydink town…I passed by the Olympia Sales Company, AND I got to visit the Lego U.S. Headquarters for a robotics competition (it’s not usually open to the public).  It was like visiting the Holy Freakin’ Grail.  It was so beautiful…::::sniff sniff::::
