11/22/2004: Seed of Chucky & The Thanksgiving Survey.

So I checked out Seed of Chucky on behalf of Box Office Magazine (and because I really, really wanted to), and while I had several typical complaints and couldn't possibly recommend the movie to a broad audience, I worry that I may have been too hard on it.  It wasn't boring, it wasn't a retread — I guess it just didn't click together into something that could keep my attention diverted from the asshole chair-kicking kids who were somehow stationed directly behind us in an otherwise empty theater.  Definitely loving the Tilly, though.  Certain moments of dopey dialogue aside, Chucky's clearly the coolest of the slashers these days.  Not necessarily my favorite, but hey, Freddy, Jason and friends haven't earned enough stripes to make Britney Spears jokes yet, and apparently, Chucky has.  We must also concede that the final two installments of the Child's Play series revamped the original idea using one of the better methods in horror history.  When you've got Jennifer Tilly voicing a killer doll who's trying to impregnate Jennifer Tilly with a dripping turkey baster full of Chucky's sperm, there's at least some small thing here to make you stand up, raise a glass and shout: "Okay, I didn't see that coming."  For audiences who aren't going to be in love with this type of movie no matter how bad it is, no way, can't tell ya to see it.  You'll want outta there after fifteen minutes.  Likely better on DVD with a bong nearby.

To celebrate a movie I'm just not sure about, here's a saucy gallery featuring Jennifer Tilly's best…heh…"assets."  _1_ _2_ _3_ _4_ _5_

I'm still working on the parade review, trying to get some bits and pieces done after work for a night-before-Thanksgiving launch.  Not as early as I would've liked, but not late.  Meanwhile, survey: what are you doing for Thanksgiving this year?

Wow! JT's assets are magnificent to be hold. Makes a girl like me a bit jealous. Incidently, what is that red thing or do I even want to know?

Posted by Kay @ 11/22/2004 10:03 PM EST

I wish I had assets like that.

It's not worth it for me to go home for Thanksgiving ($500 for 4 days isn't worth it for a lowly college student) so I'll be here, working on my final architecture studio project and cursing my professor…

Eating and shitting.

Eating, watching the parade, and hanging out with my sister, my boyfriend does all the holiday cooking (and most of the other cooking, for that matter).

Posted by Lindsey @ 11/22/2004 10:30 PM EST

Kay, the red thing is a missile.  But an unpainted Boba Fett prototype might be tempted to use it for other things.  When you're worth about $15,000, you can do whatever you want.

Thanksgiving?  Watch my old high school's football game, eat turkey with my family, probably see "National Treasure," watch that Seinfeld special, and watch a Christmas special or movie (either the Albert Finney version of "Scrooge," Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, or Pee-Wee's Christmas Special).

Posted by Darth Monkey @ 11/22/2004 10:34 PM EST

Man I'm practically already on Thanksgiving! My college is on strike  and it seems like it could be this way for awhile I have enough time to go see Seed of Chucky again! Me and my brother both agree that the Tiffany doll was cute (not like hot cute like guinea pig cute). http://www.upi4100.org/neiu/ Go see Seed of Chucky this holiday weekend so they make more sequels!

Oh yea Matt which Burger King watch commercial did you write? There are three I've seen. One with Spongbob and 2 office ones.

THe SB one.  The office ones aren't done by Nick.

Posted by Matt @ 11/22/2004 11:14 PM EST

I'm going to eat some non-pilgrim like Chandler, watch the parade, and eat a turkey tv dinner. Finally my family has agreed with me to not hassle with cooking a big bird that we'll dread having leftovers of.

Posted by pikachulover @ 11/22/2004 11:37 PM EST

Doing bookdrop at the library I work at (time and a half!) and not spending time with my family. Y tu?

Posted by MellowBlissful @ 11/22/2004 11:53 PM EST

My cousin and his family are coming in from Mississppi.  He's a Captain in the Marime Corps and is stationed near Jackson.  Going to watch the parade and hard hitting football action.  Then going to my Aunt and Uncle's house for the annual gorge-a-thon.  Woo Hoo!  Then on Friday it is football, football, leftovers, and more football-Followed by Karaoke firday night.  Karaoke rules!! :)

Thanksgiving is over for Canadians, but what I DID do was have my first Thanksgiving with friends instead of family- we made the big meal together and the whole bit….except we cheated and bought a pre-cooked chicken and then just warmed it up. Then we watched evry single episode of "Family Guy" on DVD!

Posted by Muppet Baby @ 11/23/2004 1:07 AM EST

I love Thanksgiving; it's my favorite holiday. Once Christmas happens, it's all over…on Thanksgiving it's just begun; plus you get tons of food, a parade when you wake up, a FOUR-day weekend, first-run movies on TV…man, it just keeps on giving!

"I had several typical complaints and couldn't possibly recommend the movie to a broad audience"

*Broad* audience? That, sir, is sexist! They prefer the term "dames". I mean, I haven't actually talked to one since '98, but that's what I figure.

Also Matt, you check out the Spongebob movie yet? Good stuff.

The Cyclops deserves the Oscar for Best Actor.

Being an American in Canada, I am stuck with a different time of year for Thanksgiving.  However, my school does do an American thanksgiving dinner for American students who have parents that are willing shell out the dough to pay for it.  My parents get it for me every year, and it's always damn good.  However, I miss the days of my Grandma's turkey and pumpkin pie.  My Grandma's da bomb at cooking.  I can't wait to taste her food again this Christmas.

Going to my MIL's for Thanksgiving. We alawys do. Boring. No one watches the football game over there, or the parade. They usually just play Bill Gaither tapes super loud so Mr. Traj's step-grandmother can hear them. I know my littlest one is going to be grumpy - she usually goes down for a nap after lunch, but she won't even be eating until 2. Not my favorite holiday, let me tell you.

Sorry for the bitching, all. BTW, Giant Ape Juice, though.

Going to my mom's new house to eat with her, my husband, my sister, her boyfriend, and my new stepdad.  If that isn't an American Thanksgiving, I don't know what is.

Posted by dfggfg @ 11/23/2004 8:44 AM EST

I'm super psyched for thanksgiving! It's my favorite holiday because turkey is my favorite food…not that gross deli turkey however, big, golden, roasty turkey! Yum.

We are going out to brunch at some fancy place with my parents at 11:00, then heading to my In-laws house at 2:00…we probably won't eat there though since we will have just eaten but we'll have dessert and there'll be leftovers to take home!

Mmm turkey and stuffing sandwiches…

Posted by B-Dawg @ 11/23/2004 9:27 AM EST

Oh, and you know what might be cool? I think I recall last year you mentioning that you have to make some special stuffed mushrooms every year to bring to your sister's house for Christmas right?

Well, I have to prepare an appetizer for Christmas eve family's this year, and I thought stuffed mushrooms would be good. Maybe you can share your recipe?
A new installment of Chef Matt could be comedic gold! Gold Jerry, Gold!

Posted by B-Dawg @ 11/23/2004 9:29 AM EST

B-D, oddly enough, I had already planned to post that recipe on the blog the night before TG.  Yes, I have to make 'em again. :)

Holy crap! Was that an original Boba Fett action figure?

Posted by Jeff @ 11/23/2004 9:42 AM EST

I guess I'll have to catch Chucky on video. I found a video store with a copy of FOOD OF THE GODS, so I have been waiting to get my timewasting paws into that one.
For Thanksgiving, eat with the wife's family and watch the SEINFELD DVD's until the wife threatens to kick me out (again).

Posted by manimal789 @ 11/23/2004 10:47 AM EST

I was totally looking for the 'unsafe for work' disclaimer before opening pictures of Jennifer's "assets".  Matt, you rock!

For the holiday, I am going to my grandmother's in Buffalo.  It'll be my second turkey day (Canadian Thanksgiving rocks!), and my husband is in the Philippines/Australia for two months, so this one is not such a big deal.  The crappy thing is I fly from Westchester to Dulles to Buffalo.  It's still shorter than driving.

Posted by Alison @ 11/23/2004 11:01 AM EST

I've got a hotel job, so I gotta work each and every major holiday. But they gave me a free turkey, so it's not so bad.

Ya know, originally Britney was going to make a cameo in SoC, but she pulled out during preproduction. That's what that jokey joke in the movie's about.

So whatever. Hey, has anybody heard of the new CGI Popeye cartoon, "The Quest for Pappy?" It's computer-generated, written by Paul Reiser (yes, of "Mad About You" fame), voiced by the guy who voiced Optimus Primal and also Billy West of "Ren & Stimpy." Considering its wacky credentials, it still manages to be pretty good! Worth a rent, definitely.

I'm going to my family's for just a short visit.. I have to leave and can't stay long because I've "Got a million places to go?"..    Then I'm going home to sleep and wallow in self pity..

My favorite holidays would go as such:

1. Thanksgiving
2. Christmas
3. New Years/July 4th

That being said, I'll be doing what I do every year: stuffing my entire body worth of food at my uncle's house in Baldwinsville, NY

Posted by Jeff Mack @ 11/23/2004 11:41 AM EST

I'll probably eat turkey then take a nap.  One thing for sure I won't be going to the bars on the day before Thanksgiving because it is insanely packed in each one.  Its not a lot of fun to stand in one place all cramped up for so long plus its loud as fuck….disgusting.

Posted by phunqsauce @ 11/23/2004 11:42 AM EST

I'll spend Spanksgivvin mo'nin in a light doze, with parades on the TV. Then the afternoon at my Aunt's house, helping skeletonize the turkey.  Getting some rest, because Friday starts the Holiday sale here at The Gallery.  And spending time with my Sis while she's here.  She's supposed to end her tour in February, but one of her CO's said the way things are shaping up, she'll get back to base just in time to pack up to come home for good.  We can only hope.  In the meantime, Giant Ape Juice.

Yea for booze.

Yeah, JT's known for her GIANT APE JUICE.  Actually I kinda dig Ms. Tilly.

Posted by kingklash @ 11/23/2004 6:22 PM EST

Jeff Mack, Alison…what are the odds of THREE people from the same corner of the world coming on X-E and posting a comment? I'd say pretty damn good.

I'm not from B-ville, though very close (Phoenix)…but my ex-bf grew up there so I've spent plenty of time there. I just can't believe that many people with connections to CNY admitted to such here. :)

Turkey Day this year will be spent at my aunt's house. My brother and I valiantly fought to have it at our house because there's more room/video game systems, but my grandmother decided it was time for her other daughter to do something for the family for once.

So I'll try to watch the parade with the boyfriend on the phone (Matt made me want to watch it this year!) and avoid helping my mother get stuff ready for dinner (I'm so lazy). Then it's off to the aunt's to gorge and listen to my family be their stupid funny selves. Then I have to work the next day. God, being grown up sucks.

Oh and DeathFrogurt…if Britney was going to cameo in Seed of Chucky and then backed out at the last minute, why did she sue them to ensure viewers knew it wasn't her in the movie? Such a spoilsport that ho is.

One more thing I just gotta say: Matt, I love you. Best site EVER.

Posted by Nikkii @ 11/23/2004 6:51 PM EST

As mentioned in previous blogs, I'm not a horror fan by any stretch of the imagination, so I'll bypass Chucky and Jennifer Tilly and go straight to the poll.

What am I doing this Thanksgiving? Probably the same thing I did LAST Thanksgiving: going over to my parents house, trying to wrestle the TV from all of the males in the house who want to watch testosterone-fuled action DVDs rather than the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, cheering the football team that comes from the closest place to New Jersey, and eating way too much with my very large family. Even with no reletives besides my sister's boyfriend, there's still six of us in my family, making almost any holiday a big deal.

Posted by starwenn @ 11/23/2004 6:59 PM EST

Speaking of recipes, I wanted to share a cool idea for a snack to bring to Thanksgiving (for anyone not already assigned to bring food). It was cheap (about $7 for the entire thing), plentiful (I was able to make about 100 pieces) and they're pretty good. All you need is: square pretzals (those ones that look like checkerboards), Hershey's Hugs (I got two bags) and M&Ms (also, two bags). Preheat the ol' oven to 175 degrees F. Line the pretzels up on a cookie sheet in a single layer. Unwrap the Hugs and stack them on top of the pretzels. heat them in the oven for about 6 minutes. When they come out, stick an M&M in the center of each Hug and press down so the chocolate spreads out to the ends of the pretzel. Stick 'em in the fridge for about ten minutes. Presto! Instant salty chocolate goodness. They look cool, too.

Well, there's my good deed for the day. Adios!

Oh, oops. Giant Ape Juice. Goota fight for the cause, man.

Posted by zombone @ 11/23/2004 7:26 PM EST

She wasn't going to cameo at all, ever! They just wanted to use a song of hers (Hit me baby, I think?), and she backed out.
I was just thinking that it had been way too long since I'd come to the blog and seen a scan of an overpriced ticket stub. (Though the matinee price on this one isn't half bad, considering I just paid $12.50 to go see I <3 Huckabees at some trendo theater.) I was afraid the whole F911 poopla had soured you on doing many recent movie reviews, but you did review Shaun of the Dead after that so I guess I'm just full of it.
For Thanksgiving: We thought it would only be a few people, so instead of getting a bird, we bought one turkey breast. Suddenly more people are attending, and we still only have one solitary turkey breast to go around. I find it funny now, but it probably won't be so funny come Thursday afternoon.

I <3 Huckabees was a lot funnier than I expected (I wanted to see Spongebob, myself). It's so gaddamned bizarre that it might not even hit the dollar theaters, but unless you've got a reason you really want to see it I'd say it won't kill you to wait for the DVD. I actually liked it quite a bit, but I think it's partly because it's so off the wall that it caught me off guard.

Between finally playing tackle football again and X-E, I can actually stand living here in Germany, though I'm pissed that I won't be able to partake in the Thanksgiving tradition of watching the Lions win and pray the Cowboys get stomped on television.

I just graduated from college in May and got my first real job this summer, so I'm waiting to get out of debt enough to afford to get my own place. Which I'm projecting will be about 2015, give or take. :P

I've never been to Skaneateles, but I've always wanted to go since I always hear how nice and pretty it is.

Oh, and whoever it was that saw I <3 Huckabees…what in the hell is that movie about?! Every preview I've seen has just said how everyone <3s Huckabees, shows some random clips, some reviewer calls it "riveting" or some such thing and then it's over. It could be about staplers for all the preview says.

This Thanksgiving will be exactly the same as every other one- off to Grandma's for dinner. Good times.
And Matt- did I ever mention that I love the "Thanksgiving layout"? I know I'm a little late with that.

Matt, I just saw a banner ad, on some web site, for the Golden Girls DVD that came out yesterday. Did you pick it up yet? ;) It reminded me of you, so, I thought I'd remind you incase you forgot. (Pssh! How silly of me to think you might've, right?)

For Thanksgiving, I'll be … hmm, eating something vegan (not sure what, yet) and hopefully napping, since I'll have to get up at around 3:30 am, to be at TRU by 5am … -.-; Damn the Green Friday! (Yeah, that's what TRU calls it…)

I'm staying at school on Oahu, and not flying home to Kauai. My roomates are all going to be gone though, so my friends and I are going to take all 4 matresses in my apartment, put them in the living room, and have a huge sultan sleeping pad. THEN FEAST!

(claps hands twice)  Bathe the turkey in gravy, then bring it to me!

Im going to a  really nasty titty bar, then Im going to bring one of the skanks home with me, and make her dress up like an indian while I sodomize her to the Holiday sounds of Alvin and the Chipmunks.

(then Im gonna put her in a santa suit, cut her head off, and place her in front of Wal Mart with a Butterball turkey in place of her Noodle.)

Alison:

Sorry for the long times between posts, I'm home for Thanksgiving and all my parents have is dial-up.

I currently live in Pittsburgh, getting my MFA in Fiction (creative writing).

I've seen Sodus on Dave Eichorn's weather map. :P

Don't tell people from B-Lo that they are part of upstate: they go crazy!  They call it "Western NY" :P

Alison:

I know what you mean about missing the 315.  No matter where I am in the world, I check out how the Orangemen are doing. =)

Nikkii:

This weekend is Dickens Christmas is in the village.  I'm gonna be sure to take pics of it and post it in my picture blog when I get back to the city.  Make sure to check it out.

I wanna see Charles Lee Ray. Ray Charles too. I went to see Spongebob and the Incredibles this week though. Damn, matinees are expensive where you are!

My birthday is Saturday.  Maybe we'll have a weird-ass double feature of Seed of Chucky and Kinsey.  For Thanksgiving, I'm making cornbread stuffing and pumpkin creme brulee, dropping it off at my mom's, then skipping their dinner and heading to Huntsville, TX (home ouf the Texas State Penitentiary!) for dinner with the in-laws.  Then I'm working on Friday.  Whee!

Since I am far away from my family this year and I don't want to spend the holidays with my housemates, I am volunteering to feed those in need.  I have been wanting to do this for some time and now is the opportunity for me to do it.

Nikkii, I <3 Huckabee's is about a pair of existential detectives who go around solving the philosophical crisises of their clients. Huckabee's is a department store that figures heavily in the plot. Marky Mark is obsessed with petroleum and, at one very disturbing moment, Jude Law has a gorgeous pair of cans. Actually, Lily Tomlin has a pretty great pair as well. Everything else is machetes, hippies and psychobabble. Unvague enough for you? ;)

And, courtesy of "hidden" links, here's a preview for your Thanksgiving update. Don't be mad Matt, I'm gonna donate $3.00 on Thanksgiving =D

"Well, we covered the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades from 1984-1986 last year — let's try to get at least one more out of the way this year. If you're unfamiliar with these events, a refresher: The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade began its annual crawl through New York City in the late 1400s, truly an admirable feat as there was neither a New York City or a Thanksgiving back then. In more recent times it's been a staple of the holiday, in fact the third best part of it, just behind eating giant birds and getting off from work or school. A figurative parade of stars in a literal parade down streets, it's always packed with whomever the people of that year consider the hottest new acts or the true classics of their time. Suffice to say, it's changed quite a bit from what we're about to see in the 1987 edition, when the smokiest of the smokin' were a group of singing raisins with arms, when Baby Shamu was still a baby, and most importantly, when Clifton Davis of hit TV series Amen could snatch ten minutes of face time in a Macy's Parade without first paying off God himself. You can tell a lot about a year of this past century by what went on at its Macy's Parade."

squee4242, thanks for that synopsis about I <3 Huckabees. I totally have to see it now, it sounds right up my alley. My two best friends would love it too, they're just as nuts as I am. :)

Alison, I've heard of Sodus. And I can't wait to get out of the 315 so I can miss it, lol.

Jeff Mack…no freaking way are you getting your MFA in creative writing. That's what I just got my B.A. in, from Oswego State! What are the odds?

I want to get my MFA in fiction at some point. When I can afford to and not have to live on cat food to do it. And when I stop having a heart attack over whether or not I'd be accepted anywhere.

And I'll definitely check out your picture blog for the Dickens thing, it sounds gorgeous.

Hey, it's officially Thanksgiving now…Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

So are you guys all turkeyed-out? We missed Canadian TG for a family outing, so I hosted American TG one week early, with turkey, yams, the whole nine yards. Had never done a bird like that before, and it turned out wonderfully.

The only thing missing was a pitcher of ice-cold Giant Ape Juice. I could have use Giant Ape Juice as special stuffing flavouring, but I prefer my Giant Ape Juice on the rocks.

I hear Walmart had a door-crasher special on Giant Ape Juice. Hopefully no one got trampled this year.

Matt, I was at BK in Toronto the other day and they have the SBSP watches, so I had to buy one in your honour. My nephew will love it in his Xmas stocking. Too bad we don't have Nick here, I would have loved to see your ad. But I still bought the watch, so it's the thought that counts, right?

And much Giant Ape Juice was drankeded by all one and every one.

Matt - Thanks for taking out that guy's stupid posts!

Jeff Mack - I laughed when I read your post about Western NY - I have a friend from B-lo who is ALWAYS complaining about being called from upstate!

Nikkii - You'll appreciate home much more after you leave it!

Hope everyone had a great T-giving.  Now on to X-mas!
