10/29/2004: Shrek Twinkies with Green Filling?

Here's the late entry for Thursday.  I'd debated whether this really belonged on the Halloween Countdown or not, but I'll always associate it with this special time of year, so here ya go: Hostess Twinkies now come with "Ogre Green" Shrek creamy middles.  Fate, I tell you.  Amazing how, even with the many thousand Shrek-related food promotions covered on the site, this late entrant seems to be the absolute best.  After Halloween I'll show ya some of the other weird Shrek items on sale recently, if I remember that they're in the freezer buried under unfilled ice cube trays.

I've always liked green food

As Scotty would say, "It's…. it's… it's green!"

I don't know…I don't trust anything that looks like a mtn dew pitch black poop.

Amazing.  I go out to grab lunch and come back to this little gem.  What a treat!  Thanks Matt.

Still MORE Shrek crap?!?!  When does it end.
Los Locos kick your ass! Los Locos kick your face! Los Locos kick your balls into outer spaaaaace!

Oh, yuck. The things you do for this site, Matt, I swear. We'll be collecting donations for a quadruple coronary bipass for you in ten years, while we fodnly remember all of the disgusting crap you've eaten for us. For that, I thank you.

These things are forever burned into my memory due to a terrible skit that involved the green twinkies.

No, I won't reveal the details…

My kid swears by these.  He tried to eat and entire box of em in one night.  Matt you are a man possessed by Shrek aren't you.

Come on admit it.

Ya know the first step of recovery is to admit you have a problem.

Green is a good gross out food color, but as a kid I prefered to drink blue stuff the more like windex the better.

Posted by Tiny @ 10/29/2004 3:21 PM EDT

Eww. Stuff looks really horrible when green dye gets added. Especially those seasonal Oreos. The worst Oreos are the Halloween ones because the orange coloring changes the chemestry of the frosting.

I always trusted blue candy.  The fabled "blue raspberry" was always a good flavor (especially the sour variety).  I remember one time I bought a bunch of Tear Jerkers and lost my sense of taste for a day.  After sucking on those things all day my tongue started to hurt and throb.  That shit is dangerous!!!

What Does This Have 2 Do With Halloween?

Posted by Devin Connors @ 10/29/2004 4:31 PM EDT

Anyone know anything more on the possible demise of the Twinkie forever? Hostess is suffering under the stupid Atkens craze that demonizes every single thing I like to eat. There have been rumors that the Twinkie will be out of production soon.

Posted by Mars @ 10/29/2004 4:34 PM EDT

I got these the other day, and my immediate thought was that they were the perfect item to be reviewed on this site.  In person, the filling looks a little less radioactive, and a little more rancid.  But heck, the oddity of it all made me eat several in a day, and take my own picture of them for posterity.

Posted by Frostor @ 10/29/2004 4:50 PM EDT

I'm wanting black Twinkies with black filling.  'Cause that would be truly scary.  But, as anyone ’round these parts know, ChocoDiles rule all!

Posted by kingklash @ 10/29/2004 5:37 PM EDT

I've 'ad 'em.

Posted by Lone_Psycho @ 10/29/2004 5:58 PM EDT

first thing that came to mind was guacamole! Those look incredibly worse than the originals and for that i give them 10 points! :D

I don't know…I think I still prefer the Pringels easter edition…purple chips beat green filling 6 out of the 7 days of the week. The other it's simply a tie…

Awesome. Good job Matt.
You should do a article about spider rings. They come every Halloween they're immortal.
They're the symbol of Halloween.

That green stuff looks gross

Posted by fdfgdgf @ 10/29/2004 8:15 PM EDT

I'm on Frostor's side. I took one look at these, one of the few Shrek items Matt's discussed to have found their way down here in Southern New Jersey, and I thought "These have 'Matt' written all over them." Matt and "Green."

I'm not a Twinkies fan, and really they're the last thing I need to be eating…but, maybe, I'll give them a try. We may never see this again…literally, if Hostess really is having problems.

Posted by starwenn @ 10/29/2004 8:53 PM EDT

'Member when food companies used to make up their own names for snack treats, instead of relying on movies and TV shows?  My favorite is the now-extinct Sharkleberry Fin Kool-Aid.  (Sigh.)

In other news, I have never eaten a Twinkie in my life, and I'm not starting with these.  Now, if TASTYKAKE made a green-filled sugary wonder, I might have to investigate that phenomenon.  Hostess is anathema.

Matt, I'm so amused by you.  I've told about a jillion people to come over and look…hope they have!  Keep up the good work!

SACRILIG!!!!!!! That looks friggin' disgusting.

Posted by D-Roc @ 10/29/2004 9:35 PM EDT

it's not easy being green.

so lay off for christ's sake.

I wish I had Twinkies in Korea….

Posted by Muppet Baby @ 10/30/2004 3:05 AM EDT

You think that's bad? Have you seen the new, "Queezy Bake Oven"?
I swear to god this wasn't a dream, as I stood waiting for my friend to pick out her costume at Zellers, I noticed this disgusting product.  It actually said this on the package, are you ready? "Delicious beverage that tastes like boogers and snots."  God I hope it's a halloween only thing!

Posted by Cyanyde @ 10/30/2004 7:55 AM EDT

I can't believe how disgusting those look! :) I need some… LOL

Posted by Croww @ 10/30/2004 8:04 AM EDT

I have only had Twinkies once in my life.
I prefer those Little Debbie Swiss Rolls of Death.

Posted by AngeFaitore @ 10/30/2004 10:25 AM EDT

Cyanyde-

Nope, QBO has been around for over a year now. Its your basic EBO with a nearly everything you make being green in some way.

Some of the foods are like colour changing pop rocks "gravel", Dog bone shaped sugar cookies in foaming sour "drool", Make your own gummy worms, Mud and candy bugs pudding and Snot(Green edable slime)iceing

Posted by Mr Mango @ 10/30/2004 11:16 AM EDT

Yeah, Queasy Bake Oven was on i-Mockery once. I can't imagine anything being cooked under a light bulb tasting good.

Posted by Yama the Space Fish @ 10/30/2004 11:32 AM EDT

That green makes those Twinkies perfect for the Twinkie Sushi recipe!!!  http://www.twinkies.com/recipebox/index.asp?cmd=view&id...

Posted by Sara @ 10/30/2004 12:48 PM EDT

Hey, I've been eating these all week. I thought of this site too. Why do these seem to taste much better than regular twinkies?
