09/29/2004: ‘The Fright Glove’ and ‘Hockey Mask.’ Guess who?

Wow, this was dangerously close to being late, but it’s NOT, and that’s all that counts. The Halloween Countdown entry for September 29th delves deep into the seedy world of knockoff horror costumes, introducing the pitiful “Fright Glove” and “Hockey Mask.” No royalties for Freddy or Jason. But then, they don’t need money. I should also report that I’ve contracted the dreaded East Coast Fever and will now leave you to go find more secret places to spit phlegm.

Somewhere – in a torn, moldy cardboard box – I have the issue of Nintendo Power where Robert Englund is interviewed. Robert Englund in his Freddy persona. Robert Englund saying that no one wants to be Freddy because he’s such a "mean ol’ cuss."
And I remember that part in Freddy’s Dead where he kills a kid using the Power Glove. And talks about how the dead kid is Now Playing with Power. And I ponder this chain of events that turned a once menacing figure into a shill for Nintendo, the same company that removed all of the spines and internal organs from Mortal Kombat, and I think, man, I wish I could rock it so hard one day.

I remember when I dressed up as Jason in the sixth grade,I got a cheapo hockey mask like that for my costume at my town’s local Rite Aid,I believe, and this was in 1988.

"Lonely tylenol" appears in the song "Bob," an all-palindrome tribute to Bob Dylan by Weird Al Yankovic.

Keep up the nice work, Matt! Props. :)

For those of you who want to buy some really great Freddy gloves (or just want to see them) you need to look at this site:

Do those look great, or what? :)

I was about to mention the Freddy’s Dead Power Glove incident. That was on TV the other day back-to-back with the original Elm Street. It really shows how far he fell.

Palindromes kick ass

Didn’t Matt review a Freddy glove before from a dollar store I think? race car is a palindrome. hannah is a palindrome which is a horrible 3rd grade story

Yup. Here’s the 99 Cent Store Halloween Costume article.

Or just click on my name. A true X-E classic. :)

I’m sure I went as Jason like 3 or 4 times during my Halloween career. Not surprisingly, most of those times were when I was "too old" to trick or treat, but went anyway. The Jason costume is perhaps one of the laziest costume ideas you can come up with. A hockey mask, a fake knife, and a flannel shirt is all you need. Sometimes, we didn’t even bring knives.

Ironically, I hadn’t seen any Friday the 13th movies until *after* I dressed up as Jason for the last time. Stupid.

Didn’t you say lonely tylenol is a palindrome about 4 days before?
Or was it the weird way how I learn something, suddenly everyone knows that?

More palindromes:

Gnu dung.

Egad, an adage!

Wonton? Not now!

Oozy rat in a sanitary zoo.

Too hot to hoot.

Won’t I panic in a pit now?

Doc, note, I dissent. A fast never prevents a fatness. I diet on cod.

A six is a six is a six is a…

"Red?"

"No.

"Who is it?"

"Tis I."

"Oh, wonder!"

And I dig the devil on that card. He may be a cheap Freddy knockoff, but when he shows up at your door with that glove, you know he’s not here to do landscaping. (Funnier knockoffs abound at http://www.bootlegactionfigures.com.)

Matt, I don’t know if you’ve ever done a review for The Monster Squad, but I wish you would. Anyway, GET WELL SOON!

I’m really liking the whole Halloween thing, especially the updates everyday. I’m impressed that none have been late so far! I’ve always liked Halloween, I think partially because it’s 8 days after my birthday. (21 this year!!) Also, according to my bookmark, Sep. 29 was my one year X-E anniversary! Keep up the awesome work! :)

"Freddy Kruger" rocks too bad the genaric glove sucks, I was going to pick one of those up maybe I’ll re-think that.

Ghosted by Caylor @ 09/30/2004 4:13 AM EDT

I bought that same crappy glove back in 1987 (Grade 8 Costume). Glad to see that the packaging has not changed in 17 years! ROCK ON YOU CRAZY DEVIL!

Thanks so much for this countdown, Matt, it’s a blast. I can’t believe we’re not even into Oct yet!

I managed to win a bet by eating a knock-off Freddy glove once. It tasted like plastic and hurt like hell coming out.

heheh.. try this stupid thing.. see if you can find any differences in the two pictures..
http://members.home.nl/saen/Special/zoeken.html

yo matt.. you should do an article on these things.. they seem to get passed around alot towards halloween…

Ghosted by EyeLikeP00 @ 09/30/2004 9:53 AM EDT

Shit man, that one actually got me, and I’m ashamed to admit it. A little less obvious than the "stare real close for no apparent reason at this picture" gimmick.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/30/2004 9:57 AM EDT

Sucks that you’re sick, dude. Sick enough to stay home from work? Hey, what ever happened w/ your commercial? Did I miss it somehow?

My brother had a glow in the dark Jason mask for Halloween. When I was younger, he’d sneak into my room wearing it and would crawl under my bed unitl I woke up and then pop out with this horrible glowing Jason face. Scarred me for life, seeing that picture of the mask, even though it wasn’t in a dark room and it didn’t glow, still freaks me out.

Hope you get feeling better Matt! Sucks that you’re sick, but maybe you’ll get a couple days off work!

Ghosted by Stacey @ 09/30/2004 11:07 AM EDT

After seeing those Fright Night pics I began wondering whatever happened to some of the actors from that movie. So after doing my own "Where are they now" check out what became of the guy that played Evil Ed

I saw the Words "Cheapass Costumes" and I thought it was about my friends’ boyfriend. Sure, he talked a good date, but next day I would hear all about how it would become a case of "She’ll pay for half, even if I didn’t tell her that at the start." or some varient.

Anyway, I bought four glow-in-the-dark masks a couple of years ago for a buck each. I needed spares for my experimental All Hallows’ project. I trimmed one down, using a pocket knife, into a different shape. Busted one early in the process, which is why one needs spares. If Matt sends out a call for poster costumes, you can see how it turned out.

for the glove why not cut of all the blades except the middlefinger?

goood job matt.. i love these holiday countdowns

Ghosted by ed @ 09/30/2004 2:11 PM EDT

Hmm… are you repeating stuff from years past, Matt? I could’ve sworn you did the Fright Glove before. I’ve got two of ‘em, actually — you’re right about them being awkward, which is why I’ve been planning to dismantle them and attach them to a better pair of gloves. For my Choi Bounge cosplay, you know. :D

Smell the Glove.

That’s hilarious. The fright glove brand has been around for at least fourteen years. I had one when I was Freddy for halloween as kid.

Hey I had one of these as a kid! It was the authentic Freddy glove though and came with a little plastic brown fedora. Looks like they are just reselling the same thing. I liked it, but I agree, the blades would always end up bent out of shape. It spent so much time trying to get them straight.

Nothing could be creepier than reading that article while listening to some old Halloween cassettes I dug out, and coincidentally hearing the Fat Boyz "Are you Ready for Freddy" and reading the Fat Boyz comment at the EXACT same friggen time!!!

Ghosted by EtHM @ 10/01/2004 12:15 PM EDT

I like the Freddy claws :)
Everytime I think about Nightmare on Elm Street, I think of The Simpsons parody where Groundskeeper Willie uses his rake to slash people instead of Freddy claws.

Ghosted by AngeFaitore @ 10/01/2004 9:49 AM EDT

I love the Simpsons parody of the Shinning. (Bart: "Don’t you mean the Shining?" Willie: "Shhh, boy, d’you want us ta get sued???"):D

Love it. I have never seen the Elm Street movies, although these days I’d probably laugh at Johnny Depp being pulled through the bed in a fountain of blood… people with perfect cheekbones and great skin deserve such a fate! Hah!

Hey, Matt. Never "dropped a comment" before and I dunno if you look at these. If not, cool, but I figured, what the hell.

If you click on my name down there, the link will take you to some pictures I had taken last Halloween. The first one is me as a zombie but scroll down the page and you’ll see my brother’s Jason costume I threw together. There’s a lot of makeup and crap but check out the mask. It’s the exact same one you talked about here. The plastic is so freaking cheap, I had no problem cutting new holes in it and filling in the holes that shouldn’t be there. I also burned the mask and dirtied it up with some paint. The effect isn’t great but it’s pretty similar to the "real" Jason, maybe from Part IV.

Just goes to show what you can do with a two-dollar piece of plastic.

On the other hand, I’ve been seeing that glove in stores for years and god, what a piece of shit. I don’t possess the ingenuity to make something cool out of that.

Hey Matt, Love the website. You had a an article about the Wildwood NJ and the Haunted House there. Holy crap I remembered that. I was probably eight when I went there. We went to the shore in Sea Ilse during the summers. That was an awesome haunted castle or hause. It has stuck with me for 20 years. I still remember that Iron Madien looking character on the billboard from the boardwalk. That will give a kid nightmares.
