08/11/2004: Tamagotchi Mobiles!

On the way to work yesterday, I couldn’t help noticing a line about 64 miles long wrapped around Toys ‘R’ Us like a hungry boa. Apparently there for some event tied to the brand new “Tamagotchi Connection” toys, enthusiasts from all around the world congregated at Geoffrey’s headquarters for a spirited round of “let’s wait 80 hours to see new Tamagotchi toys yeeaaahhhh!” Something like that. Just before navigating my way through the giant noodle and into my building, something caught my eye and wouldn’t give it back:

Tamagotchi-style Volkswagon Buggies! Herbies from Hell! There was a row of five of six of ‘em parked outside Toys ‘R’ Us with enough security hanging around to make me think our terror alert had been raised to Neon Carrot. Sadly, they could very well be repainted “Pikamobiles” from a few years ago – Pokemon had the same deal going with the same yellow cars. Poor Pika.

Dang it, second post.

Sorry I haven’t posted in awhile, but see that New York is being invade again by though blasted Tamagotchi creature. It seems the year 2004 is year to go retro as Tamagotchi are reintroduce to the world, the orginal pokemon games (blue & red) are redone for the gameboy advance as leaf green and fire red. Don’t get me started how Bandai is also trying to redo digimon with a CGI movie, though I kind enjoy the thrid season of the franchise.

My Mom was thinking about getting a Bug when I take her old car to school. Maybe she’ll want one of these. Now, if they had Stargate Bugs…

Maby the Tamagotchis are the terrorists??….think about it

Ghosted by bri-guy @ 08/11/2004 11:16 AM EDT

May be instead of formal president Bill Cliton as Tamagotchi, may be president Bush is next Tamagotchi monster with his, hmmm, I don’t know. I just we have to stick with sexual Bill, the Tamagotchi.

Ghosted by Beta-Theta @ 08/11/2004 11:19 AM EDT

Bri-guy may have a point there Matt since New York lately has tighten security.

Ghosted by Beta-Theta @ 08/11/2004 11:20 AM EDT

Those Pika Bugs you speak of weren’t just painted like everyones favorite (or most reviled) Pokemon, they were molded to its features too. Ears on the roof, big freaking tail out the back. Tell me one of those wouldn’t be fucking sweet to drive.

Hamburgers and aliens, Matt. You know you want to. ;)

Pika, Pika chu. Pika chu chu chu. Pika Pika chu chu. Pika-chu. Pika, !@#$#$%^$&, chu. ):@

Whoa! Pikachu is swearing. Looks like Ash was not watching the sites pikachu was visiting again.

Let’s power up the ol’ portal, type in "Pokemon" in the randomizer and….

ZAPITTY ZAP!

PIKA PIKA, YA LOUSY SACK OF CRAP!

Ohh-kay, this is why I don’t use my portal too often.

Hahaha!
Matt, you are so lucky; you get to witness all of this awesome city stuff daily!

A line that long for Tamagotchis? They’re too old to be hip and not old enough for nostalgia. Maybe it was every Tamagotchi slobbering fan that exists…they just all came to New York to see painted Beetles.

Ghosted by Mars @ 08/11/2004 1:25 PM EDT

The lines were for the Beetles, hopefully.

Ghosted by Samoht @ 08/11/2004 1:44 PM EDT

It’s a very rainbowed car… next thing you know Jerry Falwell will vilify Tamagotchis for being gay, like the purple Teletubby.

That would have been even funnier to see that paint scheme on a big-ass SUV. Tamagotchi Hummer?

In Toronto they pay people to have ads for movies on their cars, and for Anchorman they got a guy to put a fake papier-mache satelite dish on his Econoline van. That guy must have caused more accident than a dozen snowstorms, it was so distracting to see him drive by.

Matt, my friend, you made my day by chosing my entry for the coloring contest! Who could have dreamt that those 20 minutes of not doing my job would have rewarded me so fantastically! Can’t wait to see what’s in the box…

The return of the Tamagotchis!
I don’t know about you but i’m kinda sick of all the ‘return of…" stuff. The creative department must be lacking. We need new stuff!

Ghosted by Jenner @ 08/11/2004 2:42 PM EDT

I never knew they had cars in Hell.

Ghosted by Croliss @ 08/11/2004 2:49 PM EDT

Actually I don’t mind all the comebacks of all the old toy and cartoon lines (so long as they don’t go fucking around with it like they did with He-man, among others). It only proves we grew up with ALL the good stuff.

Corey Haim looks like he is waiting for that inevitable call from Nickelodeon to play Matt in a X-E show. In case Matt does not get around to taking Mugzy’s advice of X-Eing The Coreys extra on the Lost Boys DVD, here is a review of the movie’s special edition.

Ghosted by ME @ 08/11/2004 3:59 PM EDT

I own a New Beetle. Thanks for the picture, Matt.

/Wish I lived someplace cool.

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 08/11/2004 4:11 PM EDT

BTW: From looking at the car, these are either ‘99 or ‘00 models, so they aren’t new. Which means that they probably ARE re-used pika-mobiles. Unless they just bought a bunch of used Yellow NBs.

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 08/11/2004 4:13 PM EDT

Ladies and gentlemen, next up on our stage, Used Yellow NBs!

Ghosted by kingklash @ 08/11/2004 4:26 PM EDT

From the look of the illustration on the NBs, the graphic on the Tamagotchi’s thing look low tech.

Ghosted by Beta-Theta @ 08/11/2004 4:48 PM EDT

I agree with Jenner, this return of stuff is getting boring, and you can probably tell that Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green will not make as much money since they are bascially remix version of Pokemon Red and Blue.

Ghosted by Beta-Theta @ 08/11/2004 4:53 PM EDT

Ghosted by Pikachu @ 08/11/2004 4:56 PM EDT

That was truly amazing… around here we have an exterminator who’s got his bug (the car kind) painted as a squashed bug (the insect kind).

I wonder why more people don’t do that with shittier cars… like a Toyota Prius?

I spent yesterday morning with my 2 year old son looking at sorts of crap. In my mind, a world without Toys R Us wouldn’t be that bad after all.

Ghosted by Shelby @ 08/11/2004 8:20 PM EDT

Geez, and I thought (read: secretly wished) Tamagotchi had gone out of business. I never liked those little things. I’m a bad momma, I guess. Aways killing my little pets. Must be the fact that I’m a guy…

Seeing those little painted up Beetles makes me want to tamagotchi-jack one and drive it around. That would rock.

Ghosted by Paul Ortego @ 08/11/2004 9:10 PM EDT

I gots ta tell ya, I really hate them bugs. I don’t care for Tamagotchi so much either. So I guess it’s safe to say that I hate the Tamaotchimobile.

Jeff-I hate you because you won the contest.

Cool pikachu is here! ^_^ When my mom saw the news stroy about the new tamagotchi pets she said "Those are back?" Pass me a twin set and Cherry Poppin’ Daddies CD. Is stuff from 1998 retro now?

ME – thanks for the review link! Funny thing is, I didn’t get in ’til 5am and when I plopped my wasted ass in bed, Lost Boys was on HBO and I laughed my ass off!

Holy Crap, I’m glad I didn’t have to work yesterday… or today. (I work at Toys ‘R Us, though thankfully not the big monster one in NY)

Seriously, I doubt we had a line of people waiting for those things, though. Actually, we put ours on the shelf the other day and, I kid you not, we only had about 4 of them when I saw ‘em, and they were all pink, and were in a corner, on a single peg-hook where no one would ever find them. I hope *that* TRU got alot more than we did.

(btw this is my very first post here at X-E) :)

Ahh the Tomagotchi..this brings me back!

I can’t believe that the toy company that made it is actually trying to bring it back!

A good tip to keep your virtual pet happy is to have sex eith it at least once a week, or else it will key the side of your car ^_~

And you really should consider reviewing UHF, Matt…

toys R us used to be the coolest place on earth. I remember every christmas just gawking at the huge wall of NES games and making sure they had the game i wanted in stock. It seemed like so many times i’d just get the last ticket for the game i wanted. Although my most frustrating search for a video game ever had to be for Super Mario 3. After my brothers and i had FINALLY saved enough money to buy the game we called every store in the Cleveland phone book for about 2 or 3 weeks and asked if they had it. After getting rejected for those 3 weeks or so I remember vividly calling the last store of the day expecting to get rejected again. I almost peed my pants when the Best (Best no longer exists…RIP) store in Southgate had 5 copies in stock. We begged my mom to drive us to the store which was 40 minutes away and suprisingly she took us up there. When we got there my brother and i sprinted to the electronics department and low and behold there was ONE copy left. The game that had eluded us for some time was finally ours. We could finally become a tanooki and turn into a statue. We could finally slip on Kuribo’s shoe. A moment never to be forgotten…

New Tamagotchis are out? When those things hit streets in Japan people went ape-shit over em. In fact certain popular Japanese boutiques had thier own special LE designer tamagotchis that sold for up to 100 bucks on e-Bay. Now there here… I had a couple of the originals back in the day, might as well grab anew one, but then again… ahhh whatever i’ll see.. but a world without Toys R’ Us’s? Where will bored teenagers hang out to get a short cheap laugh? Oh and on a related note, Matthew, after I read your Tamagotchi video review, I actually found the damn thing in a Anime store, and I bought it. Why…….gahhh.

Cartoon Network wants to turn its "Boomerang" channel, which shows old stuff from the 60’s and 70’s, into a preschool channel. That’s a pretty big spit on people from that era, because Boomerang is the only place where anyone could see 99 percent of that stuff. And that’s not the worst of it. This article says Toys R Us is pondering dumping their stores in favor of their Babies R Us spinoff? They can’t do that! Doesn’t it make enough money?? When I was a kid, I thought the closest thing to heaven was Toys R Us. STOP THE BABIES!! THEY’RE GOING TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!

Ghosted by Mars @ 08/12/2004 2:54 AM EDT

Damn that sucks about Boomerang, Mars. My parents didn’t get cable until 1994. Lucky for me Cartoon Network was still in the early years and showed pretty much everything from their library then, so I got to see the shows from before my time.

I guess the success of Nickelodeon’s Noggin is the main reason for the switch. My younger nephew and niece only watch Noggin and On Demand Noggin in the little time they are allowed to watch television. From what I have seen of the channel, Oobi scares me the most, with the lack of budget for actual puppets.

This is why Matt needs to move up in the cable world and quick.

Arrrrrrg v_v;; I ordered a UK model like, 2 weeks ago and it STILL isn’t here (they’ve been out there for a while now)… People all over the states are finding stores that’ve put the Tamagotchis out on store shelves early. This infuriates me, as I ordered one on the ‘net early to avoid WAITING for them to come out (though then just might be available domestically before I get mine!).
