80s Commercials – Volume H2RE-46c!

Yeah, it's late, but it's up, here it is: 80s Commercials - Volume H2R3-46c. Another dozen in this batch, including Colgate Junior, the Mickey Mouse Playhouse, Roddy Piper and something about cheeseburgers. I sort of rushed through it so I'd have time to put together another article I've been meaning to write (and one that I spent a little too much money for the materials), but it's all up and there's plenty of downloads for you to check out. By the way, it's way too hot out.

Don’t really loathe FOdd so much now that I’ve had a chance to see more of it. It’s not "up my alley" so to speak, but hey, my favorite show is Get A Life, after all. There’s usually a few really great lines in each ep. Haven’t seen enough DanPhan yet to give you a good opinion, but I’m sure I will.

That RGB commercial really was the ultimate homage to one of the greatest scenes in cinema history. I have always said that! ps. looking forward to the expensive article!

Wrestling was so much cooler back then. I remember watching Maple Leaf Wrestling on Saturdays. Maple Leaf wrestling was what the WWF was called in Canada at one time before Vince Macmahon went out to be the only show in town, which was great for a whole 4 months.

My two personal favorite wrestlers of all time were Papa Shango and the Berserker. Papa Shango, for those that don’t know, was a voodoo-themed wrestler who spit fire and ‘acid’ at his opponents as well as weilding an impressive array of WWF voodoo dolls. I remember when his time was coming to an end (after his Wrestlemania tag-team championship with CoCo Beware) and he was feuding with the Ultimate Warrior. The arena lights went out as the Ultimate Warrior engaged in histrionics in the ring, and then the only light you could see was a small flickering flame which grew rapidly in intensity and activity and we see that the Ultimate Warrior’s feet are on fire! And get this, Papa Shango was not meant to have been in the same city! Classic stuff.

The Berserker’s schtick was that he was meant to be a viking berserker; wearing a horned hat, a fur shirt, crappy boots, and weilding a pretty deadly looking board sword. Cryptically enough, the Berserker (though he was a maniac slob) was a member of Ted ‘Million Dollar Man’ Dibiase’s crew. Eventually, the Undertaker (also part of the same super tagteam) turned against Dibiase and the Berserker and Adam Bomb (a guy who wore chemical gear and spit green acid [incidentally, is now Rhyno in the current incarnation of WWF]) were sent against him. The Undertaker dismantled them both, narrowly avoiding a couple savage sword swing which looked real for all the world, and they were not seen again for years.

*disclaimer: Now, I may be mangling all this, and it might be very hard to read or reconcil, but that’s how I remember it.

I loved wrestling once…maybe I will again one day.

GOd, that music for the Mickey Mouse Playhouse ad was catchy

Pure Beer? That’s some cool dog food.

I had three out of those four, and my cousin had the ray guy.
I think Panda Kahn & Napoleon are still kicking around in the more recent box of kids stuff stuck in the attic. And that giraffe guy. The later figures sure were weird.

Chestnuts roasted by Piscez @ 07/11/2004 6:43 PM

I don’t think Brian Clark played both Adam Bomb and Rhyno. I’m pretty sure he’s a different guy since he’s about two feet shorter and alot less ripped than Adam Bomb

Chestnuts roasted by Pygmalien @ 07/11/2004 6:45 PM

Adam Bomb definitely isn’t Rhyno. He got a tryout as part of Kronik (from WCW), had a terrible match with UT/Taker, quickly got the boot, the end. I always kinda dug him, tho.

"Kibbles n’ bits n’ bits n’ bits!"

I remember that ditty, and my family has never even owne d a dog. We do have a kitty, though. But he’s mean.

As for that WWF commercial, it left me with "WTF" look on my face.

Anyway, great ads, Matt. Quite memorable.

Man that was awesome, a Ghostbusters toy ad! Those things eventually led to me purchasing an old ambulance and turning it into an Ectomobile! The worst decision of my life! You bastard!

Holy S#*t
an actual Real ghostbusters toy commercial, i don’t even remember that one. that was awesome thanks Matt.

had the wrong link for a minute, don’t go to the above link or you will go to the commercial page. sorry for the mix-up

You rock, Matt. It’s nice to see a fellow lover of 80s commercials. I have a two hour tape myself filled with stuff, but I envy you as you have more stuff than I do.

Anyway, I remember a few of those commershes, especially the King Kuts commercial you mentioned under the Mighty Dog entry. I remember the live dogs in pith helmets eating the King Kuts and then transforming into cartoon dogs doing the Bangles "Walk Like an Egyptian" dance. I guess pet food companies come up with those extravagant ads to get people to buy their stuff.

Honestly, Matt, how can you mention Rowdy Roddy Piper’s performance in They Live and not reference what it’s really known for? :)

I want magic middles!!!!!

Chestnuts roasted by phunqsauce @ 07/11/2004 8:56 PM

I think the worst wrestler ever was Doink the clown. I can’t say the name without pissing my pants laughing…

Chestnuts roasted by phunqsauce @ 07/11/2004 8:59 PM

Mighty Dog: As relevant in 2004, as he was in 1988.
Yeah, "GET A LIFE" was great. Still waiting for a REAL DVD on that so I can chunk my tape of 2nd season episodes with terrible audio.
Anyways, thanks for the commercials.

I loved the Piper. He delivered one of my all-time favorite quotes:

"I have come here to chew bubble gum, and kick ass. And I’m all out of bubble gum"

Gotta love those 80′s commercials too. I have plenty of them on tape myself, but I can’t put them on my computer unfortunately. I even have an amusing one for the failed Atari 5200 system.

Chestnuts roasted by Number5 @ 07/11/2004 10:11 PM

Man, I remember that Rowdy Roddy Piper commercial. Piper was definitely one of my favorites growing up…mostly because I thought he was certifiably insane.

All these years later it turns out I was right.

Unlike the first batch, I actually remember most of these, especially the "Dress and Dazzle," "My First Sony," "Mighty Dog," "Cocoa Pebbles," and "Colgate Junior."

My sisters and I wanted those "Dress and Dazzle" – type sets badly, but, as Jess mentioned, they were too expensive…not to mention seldom-seen in the south Jersey area. Most of our "dress ups" were hand-me-downs from our mom or friends or stuff Mom made or Halloween leftovers. It was probably more fun that way…and a lot more comfortable because some of it was around for YEARS. There was this one "dress up" dress my little sister lived in for months.

And, oh yes, it’s way too hot out even here at the southern Jersey shore…and I can’t afford the apartment I’m sitting in, much less air conditioning. I have one small fan turned on me and one large fan trying in vain to cool off the living room.

I love the old "My first Sony" commercial… but does anyone else find it a little creepy at the end how that kids voice was all like, "It won’t be your last!" Like he (or she) knew the awesome power that Sony had on our weak American consuming souls?!?!?!

Mat, I’m just curious what do you think of Bionicle? It’s one of the few toylines today that is not 80s revival. Ifyou have no clue what the hell bionicle is go to BZpower.com. Also: Poll time! How many of you think CHalkzone (on Nickelodeon) sucks and Rudy,Snap and Peny should all burn in hell?
PS. Matt , can you please do an article on Bionicle(I know your busy right now, so maybe in a few weeks? IF YOU DONT,I SHAL KILL YOU AND PISS ON YOUR GRAVE [Starts Hyperventilating]:P

Chestnuts roasted by TOM @ 07/12/2004 12:08 PM

I remember the "Dress And Dazzle" commercial.

Now that I think about it, the girls had all the cool commercials when we were kids.

Conspiracy!

I should probably mention that I did end up going to Chuck E. Cheese’s today. I went and I left after about 4 minutes. For some reason, I remember it being better when I was a little kid. It actually had a lot of good video arcade games back then, and didn’t thrive solely upon skee roll. I guess it woudn’t have been so bad if it weren’t for the fact that there were 500 screaming little 8-year-olds running rampantly throughout the place. Plus, we didn’t even get to see Chuck (neither in person, nor in robot) After we left, we went and got something to eat and then went to a small casino arcade at an amusement center, which was far more enjoyable (I got a skateboard!). Robert Berry was well justified in saying that he doubted he would return within another 20 years.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 07/12/2004 1:22 AM

Nate> I hear ya’. I went myself, didn’t seem as good as I remembered. The lack of video games was surely a contributing factor. Playdium is better. Still, might be fun to take the kids someday. Even though the prices are absurd.

And I forget, who’s Robert Berry, and why’d he say that?

On the TMNT commercial: only one there I had was Ray Fillet, though I called him Man Ray, like when he first appeared in the comics. He was pretty cool there.
