07/11/2004: 80s Commercials - Volume H2RE-46c!
Yeah, it’s late, but it’s up, here it is: 80s Commercials - Volume H2R3-46c. Another dozen in this batch, including Colgate Junior, the Mickey Mouse Playhouse, Roddy Piper and something about cheeseburgers. I sort of rushed through it so I’d have time to put together another article I’ve been meaning to write (and one that I spent a little too much money for the materials), but it’s all up and there’s plenty of downloads for you to check out. By the way, it’s way too hot out.

It’s hot here too, luckily, the pool got cleaned just now. Roddy Piper is the man.

OMG OMG TONKA HYPERDRIVERS WERE THE BEST…. they went sooo fast and were industuctable and rather large like you said. But to add onto that the track also let you make them crash the only downside to the wide varitey of the cars is that the AA batteries they ran on ran out soooo fast

Mmmmm…Mutagen Man. Loved him; filled him with water. Loved him even more.
And don’t get me started on Panda Khan… always the second in command villain in my TMNT action figure wars.
And that Colgate commercial reminds me of those Crest Sparkle Mania ads from some odd years back.

I found it a little creepy how the My First Sony ad has a child saying "It won’t be your last!" What, does a cheap tape recorder brainwash you into buying nothing but Sony for the rest of your life?
Good lord, the Mighty Dog commercial IS really effective. Something about seeing 25 dogs happily chowing down on mighty dog makes me want to run out and buy my dog some too.
Who is the cartoon character next to each of the links in the article??

I never thought I’d ever hear that jingle for My First Sony ever again. Now i am scarred for eternity. Rowdy Roddy was definitely one of the best "heals" of all time. I always liked how he sounded like he was growling when he spoke and was really over the top without being cheesey. You can’t forget the fact that he wore a kilt which is the shit. For some reason lately i’ve been craving Magic Middles cookies. I’m sure you all remember them. They were shortbread cookies with the creamy fudge in the middle. I’m really suprised they didn’t last because they were really f’n good. maybe they will rise again someday….

I’d have to say one of my fondest memories of old school WWF is I believe Wrestlemania 3 when King Kong Bundy wrestled those midgets. I remember when i was young I thought Bundy killed the one midget when he belly flopped on top of him. Pure cheese….you gotta love it

Chestnuts roasted by
phunqsauce @ 07/11/2004 3:53 PM EDT
Ah yes, and you gotta love how even the midgets on Bundy’s team turned on him for it. Bundy pissed off a bunch of midgets, Hillbilly Jim and 900,000 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome. The year before, he was main eventing with Hulk Hogan.

Colgate Jr.! Ha, I remember that. I remember eating it right out of the tube (uggh…)- that and the sparkly blue Crest.
Dress and Dazzle. I had a few bits and bobs of these sets but I’ve now realized why I never had the "dress" sets- they were bloody expensive! I have a Sears Wish Book from 1989; $47.88 for a crappy poly-satin "Princess Di" hat and belt and some plastic jewelry. Too pricey? Okay, how about $14.99 for some fake hair?

Panda-Khan, an ally of the TMNT that I don’t remember. He kind of remind me of another ninja panda from another show. Does anyone know what show I am taking about?
As Lain stated before, the talking Colgate toothpaste indeed reminded me of the Crest Sparnkle Man. But, the Crest Sparnkle Man never made an appearance in (I guessing) an educational pamplet, like the Colgate toothpaste, preventing children from going to evil carnival run by germs that only wanted to ruin the children perfect, normal teeth.

Holy shit i forogt about Hillbilly Jim being in that match. What a great name for a wrassler. Another moment I vividly remember was I believe on Saturday Night Main Event that was on NBC. Akeem the dream got knocked over the ropes flipped backwards and squashed Miss Elizabeth. If I’m not mistaken that was one of the events that led to the split between Macho Man and Hogan because Savage got pissed because Hogan didn’t do anything to save her or something. Maybe you would know more about this Matt.

Chestnuts roasted by
phunqsauce @ 07/11/2004 4:07 PM EDT
It was something like that — Boss Man and Akeem were fighting Hogan and Savage in what was basically the end of their big moeny feud…Liz got busted, so Hogan took her backstage, leaving Savage alone. So after months of build, Savage returns backstage after the match, loses his mind, destroys Hogan, somehow segues into kicking Brutus Beefcake right in the balls, and ultimately puts on one of the best performances of his career. I still loved him way more than Hogan.

Chestnuts roasted by
Matt @ 07/11/2004 4:11 PM EDT
Awesome, you are right. I’m sure Brutus deserved a kick in the nuts no matter what but no one needed it more than Ravishing Rick Rude. He was such a pussy.
Here’s another question (i’m sorry if my constant postings are getting annoying) I’m sure you remember the manager named Slick. Who was he the manager for because i can’t remember for the life of me. Its funny how most of the big time guys back then had "managers." People like Mr. Fuji and Bobby "the brain" Heenan. Jimmy Hart was an annoying little fuck. But i’m sure you knew that already…

Wrestling was so much cooler back then. I remember watching Maple Leaf Wrestling on Saturdays. Maple Leaf wrestling was what the WWF was called in Canada at one time before Vince Macmahon went out to be the only show in town, which was great for a whole 4 months.
My two personal favorite wrestlers of all time were Papa Shango and the Berserker. Papa Shango, for those that don’t know, was a voodoo-themed wrestler who spit fire and ‘acid’ at his opponents as well as weilding an impressive array of WWF voodoo dolls. I remember when his time was coming to an end (after his Wrestlemania tag-team championship with CoCo Beware) and he was feuding with the Ultimate Warrior. The arena lights went out as the Ultimate Warrior engaged in histrionics in the ring, and then the only light you could see was a small flickering flame which grew rapidly in intensity and activity and we see that the Ultimate Warrior’s feet are on fire! And get this, Papa Shango was not meant to have been in the same city! Classic stuff.
The Berserker’s schtick was that he was meant to be a viking berserker; wearing a horned hat, a fur shirt, crappy boots, and weilding a pretty deadly looking board sword. Cryptically enough, the Berserker (though he was a maniac slob) was a member of Ted ‘Million Dollar Man’ Dibiase’s crew. Eventually, the Undertaker (also part of the same super tagteam) turned against Dibiase and the Berserker and Adam Bomb (a guy who wore chemical gear and spit green acid [incidentally, is now Rhyno in the current incarnation of WWF]) were sent against him. The Undertaker dismantled them both, narrowly avoiding a couple savage sword swing which looked real for all the world, and they were not seen again for years.
*disclaimer: Now, I may be mangling all this, and it might be very hard to read or reconcil, but that’s how I remember it.
I loved wrestling once…maybe I will again one day.

Unlike the first batch, I actually remember most of these, especially the "Dress and Dazzle," "My First Sony," "Mighty Dog," "Cocoa Pebbles," and "Colgate Junior."
My sisters and I wanted those "Dress and Dazzle" - type sets badly, but, as Jess mentioned, they were too expensive…not to mention seldom-seen in the south Jersey area. Most of our "dress ups" were hand-me-downs from our mom or friends or stuff Mom made or Halloween leftovers. It was probably more fun that way…and a lot more comfortable because some of it was around for YEARS. There was this one "dress up" dress my little sister lived in for months.
And, oh yes, it’s way too hot out even here at the southern Jersey shore…and I can’t afford the apartment I’m sitting in, much less air conditioning. I have one small fan turned on me and one large fan trying in vain to cool off the living room.

I should probably mention that I did end up going to Chuck E. Cheese’s today. I went and I left after about 4 minutes. For some reason, I remember it being better when I was a little kid. It actually had a lot of good video arcade games back then, and didn’t thrive solely upon skee roll. I guess it woudn’t have been so bad if it weren’t for the fact that there were 500 screaming little 8-year-olds running rampantly throughout the place. Plus, we didn’t even get to see Chuck (neither in person, nor in robot) After we left, we went and got something to eat and then went to a small casino arcade at an amusement center, which was far more enjoyable (I got a skateboard!). Robert Berry was well justified in saying that he doubted he would return within another 20 years.

Chestnuts roasted by
Nate @ 07/12/2004 1:22 AM EDT
Nate> I hear ya’. I went myself, didn’t seem as good as I remembered. The lack of video games was surely a contributing factor. Playdium is better. Still, might be fun to take the kids someday. Even though the prices are absurd.
And I forget, who’s Robert Berry, and why’d he say that?
On the TMNT commercial: only one there I had was Ray Fillet, though I called him Man Ray, like when he first appeared in the comics. He was pretty cool there.
LBD "Nytetrayn"
Also, for reference purposes- according to 1989’s Wish Book, the Mickey Mouse clubhouse retailed for $169.87. It also came standard with such features as a "working door" and "instructions". The playhouse featured in the catalog is incredibly bleak-looking compared to the one in the commercial. It’s just sort of floating in an empty blue netherworld. Maybe I’m being a little harsh- the picture next to it is one of a "3-tot rocker" featuring the creepiest looking kid I’ve ever seen.

Thanks for bringing up horrible childhood memories Matt
If you remember those Mighty Dog commercials had run for a while during the 80’s, I remember as early as ‘83. That is the year that I tied a hand towel around my Aunts Shi tzu’s neck and threw him off of the second story stairs :(. I honestly, in my childhood naivete’(or stupidity) thought that he would fly just like Mighty Dog. He didn’t, he landed with a thud and broke his back. He recovered though (of course the dog died in the early 90’s because he was old by that point, but anyhoo) that was the first time that I realized that there is a line of reality between what is shown on TV and real life that shouldn’t be crossed. I still feel bad about it to this day.

HyperDrivers were amazing, but what I want to know is, is that Daniel Stern (Wonder Years, CHUD) narrating that BK commercial?
I thought about that pure beer in dog food.
Funny you should say something about The Real Ghostbusters. I have an old VHS tape with a long string of ABC’s Saturday lineup from around 1992. Okay, I’ll admit that all I wanted to do was frame-by-frame the DiC kid in bed logo. Damn, that thing still freaks me out.
Anyway, that tape sucked, but I found it in tact on an episode of Sonic The Hedgehog on another tape and it was pretty clear.
Matt needs to do a review of the DiC Kid in bed logo and make up some creepy story about it. Actually, he should do a review of all the creepy kids’ show logos.
The scary thing about it is that the kid’s bed is up against the wall, under the window and he keeps his lamp lit, which is located on the nightstand. It’s creepy because I have my bed in a similar position and _I_ keep a dim light on at night.
Are those cheap DiC animators stalking me…?

Chestnuts roasted by
Matt @ 07/12/2004 10:10 PM EDT
Speaking of pet food commercials that make you want to buy the product, when I was like 6 or 7 there was this fancy feast commercial and that cat food looked so good to my little mind at the time. I got some for my cat and tried some myself. Needless to say it was sick. Why the hell did they make it look so appetizing? Oh, and I don’t know who said it, but I agree about the dic kid, creepy stuff.

By the way, you better be kidding about shutting X-Edown.

Woooo! 100th post! Nothing else to add.
Oh, except that Matt is probably a fake, now that I think about it.

Chestnuts roasted by
A-wel Cruiz @ 07/13/2004 8:49 AM EDT
Hmmm…If it was the "real" Matt he would have written in by now. I’m sure t’was just the standard blog flamer. Flamers put their pants on one leg at a time, just like everyone else, but after they get their pants on they post stupid crap and run. Besides, I’d have to agree with Joe in OH…Matt knows how to spel gud.

Chestnuts roasted by
Blah...blah @ 07/13/2004 9:41 AM EDT
Ha ha, how mighty original, pretending to be Matt, and saying something ludicrous like you are shutting X-E down. Please.
I can’t believe anyone fell for that illiterate asshole’s post. Not only are there simple misspells, it’s nowhere near what Real Matt would have said anyway. Geez. THINK, PEOPLE.

Chestnuts roasted by
Uschi @ 07/13/2004 9:59 AM EDT
Geez, haven’t you people been reading long enough to realize that not only is Matt an immaculate speller, but he doesn’t write anything in less than 30,000 words! He wrote 10,000 on a broom he found in an Advent calendar! I think he would write a lot more than that if he were leaving.
But let’s all hope he never does!

I Love the 90’s has some guy who’s a "pop culture expert". They should have used Matt instead.

Chestnuts roasted by

Matt uses proper punctuation and capitalization. Fake Matt used the usual lack of punctuation and capitalization most people on the internet use because they’re too lazy to do otherwise.

Chestnuts roasted by
Teirusu @ 07/13/2004 6:56 PM EDT
The reason Matt never had to secure some way for no one to pretend to be him is that no one was stupid enough to try to do it before now. Honestly, why do you, whoever you are, want to imposter him? Unless you’re 13 I don’t understand the motivation.
About "Shredder’s" not-Shredder voice–remember doing the run of the original cartoon, there were a few episodes where a different guy did the voice? It really peeved me simply because the normal guy sounded so much better.
And am I the only 80s child who never watched pro-wrestling? Mostly due to the fact I wasn’t allowed to watch it. I only saw the WWF cartoon a few times and only remember the episode where they had an amusement park where every wrestler got a ride named after them. Hulk Hogan, of course, had the roller coaster.
That bubble-gum quote, Number5, is going to keep me laughing for a good day or so.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to more 80s commercials. I think that TV commercials in the 80s were far more memorable than the 90s batch. Hope you got some of the good stuff like Twinkie the Kid, the Hubba Bubba Gum Fighter, Snausages, Klondike bars, and more Transformers commercials.

Matt- Thanks so much for the commercials! So many of them I thought only I remembered the jingles to ("My first Sony" is permanently etched into my brain, I am pretty sure.) Glad to see all your WWF knowledge as well! DANTHEAPE- I went to a WWF show when i was 10- Front row….dream come true….BRET THE HITMAN HART .vs. ADAM BOMB WAS THE MAIN EVENT! (and for a Canadian kid like me Bret is ‘the best there is the best there was and THE BEST THERE EVER WILL BE) but anyways- DOINK THE CLOWN was there too- and he came out with a bucket of snowballs and I got hit with one! I was one of the chosen ones! I agree with you- he was best at first.

TOM, aren’t you like, ten? Chill on the language or you won’t have any curse words left to bug your parents with by the time you’re 15. At least hold back on the "C" word as your trump card.
Imposter Ant: nice lesson teaching, but it would be more effective if anyone had believed it was actually Matt for more than twenty seconds. I think people have been blocked from commenting on the blog in the past, so hopefully we’ll be spared if some other evil genius decides to replicate your insidious and ingenious plan.

Yes I’m blaming you for the writing. And yes Roddy Piper is THE man for insane wrestling promos. I would love to see him and Dennis Miller just go head to head for insane rants.

I had the purple tonka hyperdriver!! That thing was awesome! You just turn it on and let it go whereever, it had major treads on it so it could climb the steepest carpet! The bumper had rollers on it so it would guide itself around walls. There was no stopping that thing!

Regarding Fake Matt:
Don’t you people realize that by making a big stink about the whole make-believe Matt thing, that you are just encouraging that kind of behavior? Whoever is doing that is only doing it to get a rise out of you, and you are all rewarding the impostor with each subsequent comment. Just ignore it and move on.
