06/28/2004: Toddler Turtles & TMNT Mutagen!

I love these figures, and you will too. Playmates has finally unleashed the Toddler Turtles four-pack, featuring each of the Ninja Turtles as little kiddies with less painful weapons and more innocent smiles. They’re really some of the best toys I’ve seen out there in the past few years, and if you were ever a TMNT fan, don’t even bother trying to pass ‘em up. I would’ve paid double or triple the eight bucks they ran without feeling the least bit ripped off. Okay, maybe not triple. The next article should be killer…expect it tomorrow afternoon or early Wednesday. Or never.

While we’re on the subject of TURTLES, you’ve gotta check out this shit I found. Okay, at Toys ‘R’ Us or a reasonable facsimile — you know that section of the store with all of the party favors and whatnot? The one spot you never really bother with? Well, break the code. There’s something great tucked in there, and it’s cheap cheap cheap. A set of four small TMNT mutagen tubs, featuring this entirely too kickass slime that’s more like Play-Doh than anything you’d get out of a vending machine. You can totally mold shit outta this stuff, and it’s a lot sweeter smelling than most toy slimes to boot. I know a lot of the new figures come with a much more impressive barrel of mutagen, but this is a slime of a different kind. Definitely worth hunting down.

The party favors aren’t new entries, and I doubt more are being produced. If any of your local stores have it, rest assured that it’s the last of their stock. In other words, get away from your computer. Get out of the house. Get in your car or on your magic flying bike. Buy the Toddler Turtles and the almost-bootleg mutagen party favors. You know it’s what you want. Don’t deny yourself victory.

Pre. Teen. Turtles.

Ugh.

Ghosted by Gretchen @ 06/28/2004 4:06 PM EDT

Oh come on, they’re great!

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/28/2004 4:07 PM EDT

How cute are those? I want to hug them and squeeze them and call them George.

Ghosted by Kay @ 06/28/2004 4:09 PM EDT

they look kind of cheap, makes me wish my mom didn’t throw out my old TMNT action figures

Ghosted by Steve @ 06/28/2004 4:11 PM EDT

There ae a lot of flashbacks in the new show, so the figures aren’t continuity-less. Ma collects turtles, and she really likes TMNT, so I might find these for her. Iwant figures based on the Anime Super Turtles.

If you’re saying we see Toddler Turtles on the show, I’m saying I need to track down a compilation tape. Wasn’t there supposed to be a DVD set of the first few seasons? I can’t find it.

…. I forgot what I was gonna say… :(

Oh yeah! That wrestler he-man knock off thing looks like Jesus!

Ghosted by Paul @ 06/28/2004 4:33 PM EDT

Now I’ve seen everything!

And Krang watches in the background…

They could take krang 1 on 1. Hes just a brain :)

Ghosted by heeloyd @ 06/28/2004 4:35 PM EDT

so cute! by the way, the guy they’re attacking at the end is a generic Big John Studd wrestling figure. i know cause i had the same figure as a kid.

Ghosted by Chris @ 06/28/2004 4:37 PM EDT

I could definately see Toddler Turtles getting their own show ala Muppet Babies and that horrible Flintstones kids crapfest. Damn that pup named Scooby-doo too. Probably should have done it 15 years ago when cartoon "baby" versions were all the rage. Don’t get me wrong though I love the Todd Turts.

Ghosted by Blah...blah @ 06/28/2004 4:37 PM EDT

I liked Pup Named Scooby Doo, I used to watch it right before school started when they were airing reruns on cartoon network (right after that baby max cartoon, wow those were shitty days) I think that was 5th grade… Ok you’re right it was yesterday

Ghosted by Paul @ 06/28/2004 4:47 PM EDT

No wonder Raph’s mad, look what hes given as a weapon, I think I now understand were all the hatred and resentment came from, still pretty cool though, good to see the revived, wonder how long till a remake of the movie :)

Being that I was a big fan of the original comic series, and only about 1/4 as much of a fan of the less violent, more kiddy oriented cartoons, I’ll probably pass on these. There were definitely no toddler days for the turtles in the Eastman and Laird comics. I’m sure if I was primarily a fan of the cartoon I’d be much more enthusiastic about the young ‘ens.

Ghosted by a piece of milk @ 06/28/2004 5:06 PM EDT

Hah, yes, I guess this must be a pisser to the old comic fans. Reading that biocard must pain you. :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/28/2004 5:07 PM EDT

I love them! They are so cute! Now I must run out and buy lots of them to give to all the little kids in my family! Thanks Matt!

As a box-opener at KB toys, I have to tell you that these elusive figures are, in fact, elusive. I’ve only seen 1 package of them in every 24 pack box. Its one of the more rarer figures, like the Ultra Mouser or one of the deformed rock-eating humans.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 06/28/2004 5:12 PM EDT

Interesting. They’re not being sold that high on eBay for some reason, so if you can’t find ‘em in stores, check there.

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/28/2004 5:16 PM EDT

Drat, I was at Toys’R'Us at lunch and saw the TMNT stuff and thought how odd they still had that old junk…

I should have gotten some, was shopping for my nephew’s 12th b-day.

I remember watching TMNT after school as a French-Canadian teenager, at the time I could barely scrape together 3 words in English. I loved watching cartoons because the language was simpler than sitcoms. My favourites were TMNT, GI Joe and the #1 of all times: JEM. Yes, it’s girly stuff, but, well, I am a girl. So.

No news of a not-so-old Splinter or pre-teen April?

Ghosted by Yzziefrog @ 06/28/2004 5:33 PM EDT

Yzzie, FYI: they just released a bigass Jem DVD box set. Looks absolutely awesome.

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/28/2004 5:34 PM EDT

They kinda look like the old TMNT’s, don’t they? Well, with the goofy grin bit.

Ghosted by Freezair @ 06/28/2004 5:36 PM EDT

wow.. to be frank I was born in 1988, therefore a bit too young to remember the turtles, but I do have some old action figures that are kind of neat.. anyway.. These look kind of interesting..maybe I’ll just get em for the hell of it.I saw that slime at a party store too, that and foam ninja stars. crazy world we live in.

God, why do I always seem to catch the eps where none of the really good stuff happens? Without trying to spoil it, have they gotten to the "pink thing" yet?

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/28/2004 5:48 PM EDT

Matt,

Amazon has the DVD for volume one with the toddler in it. You can also check out http://www.ninjaturtles.com for upcoming figure release, episodes, and guides.

P.S. have you seen Baby Popeye? Go to http://www.cartoonbrew.com and see for you self. Just scrow down and it should be there.

Ghosted by Spongebob @ 06/28/2004 5:50 PM EDT

Damn. Now the article’s musings won’t make much sense to those who’ve seen the toddlers on the show. Then again, when I speak of them there toitles, I’m talking about their personas circa the old cartoon 99% of the time.

I’ll pick up some DVDs on my next outing to DVD Land. Couldn’t hurt.

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/28/2004 5:52 PM EDT

JEM DVD sets??? Can’t wait to see them turn out at the second-hand CD store.

Can’t afford them new, taxes and stuff in Canada make it out of my league.

Ghosted by Yzziefrog @ 06/28/2004 5:56 PM EDT

Without trying to spoil it, have they gotten to the "pink thing" yet?

Matt,

Yes, they have gotten to the "pink thing or things". That’s all I will say without spoiling it. It is in Season 2 in case you were wondering.

Ghosted by Spongebob @ 06/28/2004 5:59 PM EDT

Cool, thanks. Gonna be pretty cool to watch the gamut of episodes in a few sittings. I went through the same thing with Beast Wars after only getting into it well after season three began. I’m sure I’ll love it.

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/28/2004 6:00 PM EDT

Is it wrong to call this one of my favorite articles just because I love the crayon header with the "I’m 2!" turtle? I hope not.

Ghosted by Crayola @ 06/28/2004 6:16 PM EDT

Matt, will Saban’s version of the turtles get any X-E love? Sure it was bad, but it hearkened back to the Krofft-lite original GhostBusters from Filmation: http://www.protoncharging.com/ghostbusters/fgb.shtml
http://members.tripod.com/whittakill/ghostsounds.htm

Michael Ian Black (The State, Ed, and also known from over use of gay reference humor on VH1 countdowns) and Ben Garant (The State and Reno 911) were once mall Ninja Turtles:
http://www.stellacomedy.com/website_press/onion.htm
"O: Michael Ian Black, I’ve read that you toured America as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Is that true?
MIB: That’s true. Michael [Showalter] was in How I Learned To Drive, which won a Pulitzer Prize. I was in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
DW: Which won a Tony.
O: What was it like touring America as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle?
MIB: In a word: smelly. My primary memory is that it was smelly, and that there was a lot of pizza involved.
DW: My understanding was that you were not actually in the show, but rather did the live appearances in malls and stuff before the show.
MIB: That’s right. Me and Ben Garant from The State toured the country promoting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the show. We were turtles promoting other turtles.
O: Was that a fulfilling experience?
MIB: It was, actually. It was a fulfilling experience financially for me at the time. I was 18 or 19.
O: Do you ever wish you could reprise that role?
MIB: I have. Many times."

Its agreed: slim is cool and turtles are awesome.

Ghosted by Dancer @ 06/28/2004 7:57 PM EDT

I think the Turtle Tots should get their own show. A pre-pubescent Shredder would be the bully at their dojo. Yeah, I know that leaves HUGE plot holes in the continuity of the story, but these are so friggin’ cute that you could excuse oversights.

Wouldn’t you want to see Shredder in a helmet and shoulder pads that he made out of his mom’s pots and pans?

Ghosted by IncogNegro @ 06/28/2004 8:12 PM EDT

Anyone remember during the cartoon (old series) that Shredder got hold of some mutagen that turned the turtles into baby turtles? They had to work together to get transformed back. I think even Splinter got changed into a juvie.

Ghosted by GhengisX @ 06/28/2004 8:13 PM EDT

Hey, Matt, I usually don’t ask questions, but have you ever thought of finding some Tiger Beat magazines from the mid-90s and reviewing them?
That would be interesting.

Ghosted by AngeFaitore @ 06/28/2004 8:27 PM EDT

I do have a few TBeats…the only reason I haven’t reviewed ‘em is because it’d be pretty much limited to making fun of washed out celebs’ faces. Though some of the articles could be lampoonable.

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/28/2004 8:30 PM EDT

Damn, those are some cute baby turtles. I must have them!!!

My 2 cents on the new show- it is far and away better than the original. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the original, but the new show just kicks so much more ass.

Ghosted by 4thDown @ 06/28/2004 9:30 PM EDT

Thanks Matt, another cute thing I have to buy my girlfriend >_< Actually I think I remember seeing those guys at the local Target, and since I was with my friend whom, when we wander malls all we do pretty much is make fun of every single thing we look at espeically in toy stores, all I did was say something like "WHat the hell are these? They look like little pirates...all 4? Wow...hey this Hulk figure is dressed in a stupid suit! blah blah", maybe ill actually buy them since they dont sound too expensive.
Also, Matt, my man, you ever gonna do a new MUSCLE article? I have a shitload if you need any.

cute!

My 4 year old would love these. Need to go to KB Toys @ lunch tomorrow. Thanks Matt!

Just to let you know (like you care),the figure that the turtles are attacking is a bootleg WWF Big John Studd figure.

Thats one to grow on

I take issue with the Donatello comments in the article, I hated him. Leo was my fav, and when I was 6, I had a full on, multi piece Leo costume for halloween. I won a costume contest with it, and it allowed me to see under my blindfold to win pin the tail on the donkey. I don’t condone cheating, the the prizes were WWF cards, I had to.

Ghosted by Rob @ 06/28/2004 11:53 PM EDT

Scratch the first "the", meant "but the", not "the the".

Ghosted by Rob @ 06/28/2004 11:55 PM EDT

Actually, these Toddler Turtles are so cheap because they are all just the same toy repainted. Makes it cheap to do a 4 pack.

And one of the comics actually had a slightly younger group of Turtles getting into a fight with some gangers and the Turtles had these toys’ headscarf things on instead of their normal masks.

The new Turtles show really does take its cues from the old TMNT Mirage comic book.

Ghosted by Bloodcat @ 06/29/2004 12:22 PM EDT

Leo would’t condone cheating either, Rob.

Ghosted by IncogNegro @ 06/29/2004 12:22 PM EDT

"God that would rock. And rock beats scissors. Scissors are kind of like Shredder, right? So long as none of the other villains associate themselves with paper, we’re in for a clean heroic sweep."

What??? LMAO

You my freind, have the gift of gab. Why, if you ever abandoned this site…I…I…just don’t know what I’d do. How could I ever move on with my life?

Ghosted by Novaximus @ 06/29/2004 12:41 PM EDT

these will fit much better up my tailpipe, they will be mine soon! back to the dark sewer turtles!
