06/23/2004: Super Mario Bros. — The Movie!

Here’s my extremely scatterbrained review of Super Mario Bros., the 1993 film that took more than a few liberties with its video game subject matter. Here’s a surprise: I absolutely did not hate this movie. It’s ridiculous and stupid, but it’s got a lot going on, and some of it really works. Maybe it’s just that it’s so unbelievably different from any other movie I’ve seen. Maybe it’s just the Bob-ombs. The review is more an exercise in throwing a bunch of random shit at the html wall to try to convey the broad, silly themes of the film. In other words, it’s all over the place. Still, if you’ve never seen the Bob Hoskins version of Mario, I’d recommend a viewing.

“sept 12, 2001. I flip to HBO, this movie is playing and it is the scene when New York begins decintigrating, starting with the Twin Towers. 8o” Glad to see that I’m not the only one that remembers what now has to be one of the most awkward scenes in cinema history. The really morbid thing is that IIRC, the CG damage that magically appeared on the WTC actually somewhat resembled how it looked on 9/11.

Needless to say, i loved the movie. I bought it on VHS, when it first came out. i was prob. one of the maybe 30 Geeks that went to see it at are local Theater.

Given that, I DO WISH, they would of made a Sequel. It was a good movie, it kept to the Games Closely, and Followed a Focused Storyline.

Unlike Other games that became movies… Resident evil, Max Payne? They were getting so far away from the Focus of the games, most people got bored in the first 30 minutes.

All im saying is, For a Movie targeted at 7-18 year old’s. It was a Very Decent movie, that provided, good But, Dated Effects. Action, Adventure, and Most importantly a Storyline that Any S.M.B. Fan Could love!

Well im late in posting anyhting here but thought i would anyways. Years have gone by but I would say that the movie was heartbreaking to me. I agree with both sides. There was good points and bad points to this movie. I have thought long on what the script should be for a much better and darker Super Mario Brothers film could be. Let me explain for example. The plot should follow the first game only. It should be much more dark and sinster as well. I;m talking goombas that are still mushroom like with glowing eyes and sharp fangs that want to eat you alive. Nasty and slimy looking. Maybe even a bit of drool. I have a good imagination for this and have drawn pictures of it. King Koopa should be a nasty looking DRAGON! Not a F..king dino. He was a dragon in the games so keep him as one. He should look bad ass to. Fire breathing and all. He sholud even talk too. With a low pitch growl voice. Evil to the core too. Red glowing eyes and large fangs. Still look close to what he did in the game but better and more detail. My plot for his role in the movie would be that King Koopa was chained up and locked away many years ago in a castle of ruins. He excapes one day and breaks free of his chains. He seeks revenge on the Mushroom Kingdom and releases his koopa trooper(also bad ass looking like him) on the kingdom and begins to rule them all. He kiddnaps the princess for ransom. He needs her as a barganing chip for the thrown of the Mushroom King. The only one to excape this hell is Toad Stool. He is the servant to the King and goes to seek help. No one in their world can or will help him. So he travels to our world in desperation and finds Mario and Luigi doing there plumbing thing at a site. Toad Stool comes out of one of the pipes and begs them for help. He doesnt tell them much but the finally agree to help. Mario and Luigi are on deperate times and not much work so Toad Stood bribes them with the thought of a hugh some of money and other things.

Ok that is all i wanted to put on here about a GOOD plot of how it should have been done for Super Mario Brothers the movie. This plot will never make it to screen. I wish someone would do a relaunch of the movie like i described above but i may never see this happen.

If anyone wishes to hear more on this plot or think it sounds good or what not let me know. I’m open to opinions and would like to know.

I fondly remember seeing this movie when I was in grade school. I almost cried at how little it had to do with the video games. I was displeased.

Now that I’m older, I appreciate it a little more.

Following this trend, I think there’s a great chance that in 50 years this will be remembered as one of the best movies ever made.

In 1000 years, it will be shown to schoolchildren as a documentary portraying the struggles of the 1990’s.
