06/18/2004: Jell-O Pudding Pops are BACK!

It’s a short article that was more suited to be a blog entry, but it was just too big of an occasion to resist: Jell-O Pudding Pops are back! This probably isn’t big news to most of you here; I’ve seen it talked about over the past few weeks, but for the other half of the planet who must have this information, it’s now there in html form with a bunch of pictures of Tunnel Rat. Now then, the answer to yesterday’s Kinder Egg trivia quiz is…

A spider. Guess the clue was a little easy. “Ant” is our winner with the first corrent entry. He wins a big huge smile. :)

One more thing. The only thing that would make this event even better, is the revival of all those Bill Cosby commercials. I’d love to see the old ones on TV, and even on this website. It’d also be cool to see new ones.

Pudding Giggles!

Ghosted by kingklash @ 06/19/2004 4:51 PM EDT

Mmmmmm, that article made me hungry now, darnit. Might have to make a trip to the store for some of those pudding pops…

Seeing Tunnel Rat made me wonder though, will Cobra’s Chia Plot ever see a resolution?

(Also wondered, if pudding pops can come back, why can’t McDonald’s Changeables? But that’s probably more of a long shot, huh?)

Hey, the Wachamacallit candy bar came back. Anything is possible.

Ghosted by trajeal @ 06/19/2004 7:23 PM EDT

Well… I went to the grocery store and they didn’t have them there. We tend to get things here a lot later than other places though. I’m still waiting on that Glad Press N’ Seal wrap stuff, although I’ve heard it’s not all it’s advertised to be… I had to settle for plain old frozen water/sugar/colour/flavouring popsicles…

It’s not the only thing that’s back. Our here in California I’ve been buying Orange Tangergreen Hi-C for a while with a June expirationd date thinking "oh well, the last of it here" This week I went to the store and woot! Nov baby, they’re making more! hooray!

Additionally I bought about 5 pounds of chocodiles, I guess West coast producers are just better :P

Ghosted by Ghalidrim @ 06/19/2004 8:17 PM EDT

That’s one of the things I love about working in a grocery store. A customer about my age (25) or a little older brought up a package of these, and I’m like "Are those Pudding Pops?" and she says "Yeah! I haven’t seen these in years!" and I’m "It’s a little piece of my childhood back!"

It wasn’t a summer evening in the mid-late 80s if we didn’t get to sit out on the back porch, under the big willow tree or on the rickety steel swing set, slurping Pudding Pops and discussing out day at the beach, movies, TV shows, or life in general. I’m definately going to have to pick up a box.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 06/19/2004 8:30 PM EDT

i just picked up a box today thanks to you guys, i have been asking for the return of these delicious treats for years. if you grew up in the 80s, these were the best.

Bill Cosby… pudding man.
As a little kid, I thought because he liked chocolate puddin’ pops, I assumed he was made of chocolate.

All this talk about Bill Cosby reminds me of those Picture Pages days! Anyone remember the name of the damn pen he used to use?!

Picture pages, picture pages,
lots of fun with picture pages.
Lots of fun with crayons and your pencil. . .

Ghosted by Mugzy. . . @ 06/19/2004 9:17 PM EDT

I would have gladly taken the "plain old regular shitty stupid nobody-wants-it piece of crap Vanilla" – I hate chocolate ice cream.

So, hey, Tunnel Rat – lemme know next time, ‘kay?

Somewhere a disgruntled Bill Cosby glares into his grocer’s freezer. How could they not include the man who immortalized the infamous pudding pops? I’ll be he is plotting his revenge with Malcolm Jamal Warner and that dude who played his father on the Cosby Show. I actually met the guy who played Cosby’s dad. He’s really friggin tall…

I watch "Unwrapped" all the time just because it makes me happy to see that Marc Summers still has work.

Ghosted by Youji @ 06/19/2004 10:48 PM EDT

I love Unwrapped, period. Maybe they’ll do something on the pudding pops if they haven’t already.

Holy picture pages Batman! All of our wishes came true. We all wanted the pops back, and we got em back

Speak of TMNT, did you ever notice that in the UK they were referred to as the "Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles"?

Mugzy…: Cosby’s pen was named Mortimer Ichibod. The best part of the show was the weird electronic noise made when Bill would put his pen to paper. Sadly, this wasn’t a feature available in the home version. :(

Now I’m sad. I require a "Mac and Me" review to continue living!

Ghosted by A-wel Cruiz @ 06/20/2004 9:53 AM EDT

Thats cool as shit that they’re back. I’ve been craving some for years. I’m a little disapointed that they’re not the same shape as the originals. Ah well, puddin’s puddin’.

Ghosted by Jason @ 06/20/2004 10:54 AM EDT

I will buy anything endorsed by Bill Cosby. If Dr. Cliff Huxtable suggested a sex change, than the next time I posted on this blog it would be with a new pair of breasts.

Ghosted by IncogNegro @ 06/20/2004 2:23 PM EDT

Them pudddin’ pops is good.

Yeah, I love those!!!

And I love Bill Cosby– Purveyor of the Jell-o Pudding Pops, Kodak Film, and Coca-Cola.

OMG!!!! I am so happy, I have been waiting for the day when I would see these back in the freezer section. I hope they are in my area. Thanks Matt!!

Hey, the Wachamacallit candy bar came back. Anything is possible.

I still think the "Sounds good… smells PEANUTY" is the funniest commercial ever, and Matt needs to review it.

Ghosted by Piscez @ 06/20/2004 3:43 PM EDT

Thanks A-wel Cruiz, aprreciate the info. It’s the little things that make me happy and keep me going! I too remember the cool noise Mortimor Ichabob made when used for writing – I owned my own and always wanted/wished it would make that cool noise!

. .Lots of fun with pictures pages,
you’ll have fun with picture pages.
‘Til Bill Cosby does another picture page with you!

Those things kick ass! I can’t wait untill I can get them tasty jello fuckers! And that cartoon was funnier than shit (and shit can be pretty funny, too)!

Mortimer Ichibod Marker. Sigh… he was the best.
Mr. trajeal’s uncle is a pilot, and he used to fly Bill Cosby all over the country on a private jet. Supposedly, he was a pompous jerk. I don’t know if I could believe that about Pudding Man. It’s just TMI, ya know?

Hey, aren’t Matt’s initials M.A.C.? Maybe that’s why he won’t review Mac and Me. He was traumatized by the thought of a relation.

Ok, here’s a fun game. Take the first 2-3 letters of your first, middle and last name, put them together into one word, and find out your Clan of the Cave Bear name. That’s where I got trajeal from. So, Jonathan Taylor Thomas (the only three part name I can think of off the top of my head) would be Jotato. If Matt’s middle name were Andrew, he would be Matanca.

"you see the kids they lissen to the rap music which gives them the brain damage with their hippen and a hoppin and the bippin and the boppin so they dont know what the jazz is all about you see jazz is like jello pudding pop. No, actually it’s more like kodak film. No, actually jazz is like the new coke …it’l be around forever ahh ahh ahh"

Ghosted by Scourge @ 06/20/2004 10:53 PM EDT

I don’t have a middle name so I can’t play Trajeal’s game properly, but if I play it with only two names I can be Gabla, Gablar or Galar, depending on whether I use two letters or three from each name.

"I watch "Unwrapped" all the time just because it makes me happy to see that Marc Summers still has work." -Youji

It’s funny as hell that you said that, I’ve had the same reaction towards the show ever since it came on. The remote always gets put down when Marc Summers pops up out of nowhere with a new show. Not to mention the show itself is great.

We’ll flip "Big John Studd" for it.

That almost made coffee come out of my nose.

Using my real name, I’d be Adalawel. Hmmm, I think I’ll stick with A-wel Cruiz.

Of course, should Matt review "Mac and Me", I may be compelled to leagally change my name to Adalawel. Something to think about.

Nice….I remember Bill Cosby and I hated his comercials, but I loved the pudding stuff. Nice article too.

Well, according to Kiowa legend, when the Kiowa say that bears are our brothers, its’ not in a spiritual sense, its literal. So be nice to bears, they might be my relatives. Hey, is that a pic-a-nic basket…?

I thought we were talking about spiders and frozen pudding. Where the fuck did all of that come from?

Ghosted by IncogNegro @ 06/21/2004 7:41 PM EDT

I think it’s kinda sad that the only legacy this man is leaving behind is a decade of ugly sweaters and shilling for Jello.

Ghosted by pulseczar @ 06/21/2004 7:51 PM EDT

i guess i would have to be Jerhel or Jerohelt, or some crazy shit…i really like the Clan series, i have read the first four books a bunch, but nothing after that.
On another series note, I just got the new Dark Tower book, so I am pleased as punch.
No fucking pops at any store around me, so I still run to the freezer section anytime I go in anywhere. If I don’t get them soon I’m gonna get the shakes and see bugs ooggy on the wall.

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 06/21/2004 7:53 PM EDT

Pulseczar, if you think the only legacy is the sweaters ‘n jello,
ya got another thing comin’.

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 06/21/2004 7:54 PM EDT

:) I’d be Aliviotur or Alivitur
Anyone remember the Flinstone’s pushpops? Man i miss those. Flinstones used to be on everything. I wonder if matt has done an article on flinstone’s stuff from the 80’s. Multi vitamins, push pops, other sutff i can’t remember :P
Just something to cotemplate. :D

Ghosted by Allie @ 06/21/2004 8:24 PM EDT

Allie: they still make Flintstones Push-Pops. :) Check the freezer section. The vitamins live on, too.

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/21/2004 8:29 PM EDT

kidneyboy, you lucky dog! I’m dying to get the new Dark Tower book. Have you started it? how is it? is it all in Susannah’s perspective? Will you transcribe the whole book here in the blog?
I jest. Actually, no I don’t. Well, maybe. Not.
I’m dyin’ ovah heah.
Must.. have… new… Dark Tower… fix… now…

Ghosted by trajeal @ 06/21/2004 8:42 PM EDT

Don’t get me wrong, kidneyboy, I was a Picture Pages fanatic when I was a kid. Bill Cosby simply hasn’t done anything since besides that failed sitcom he had about five years ago.

Ghosted by pulseczar @ 06/21/2004 10:04 PM EDT

where the hell is the chia plot?!?!?!

Ghosted by spoco @ 06/22/2004 1:44 AM EDT

A-wel, shut up about your Mac and Me review. Pop Arena has one, and they mentioned you in it, that’s how notorious you’ve gotten around here……

Ghosted by Mars @ 06/22/2004 2:39 AM EDT

I only liked the strawberry ones… oh, wait, no, I remember liking the butterscotch ones too. I don’t know if we even got the swirly ones in Canada. Weren’t the 1980s version flatter and less phallic than the ones seen in the photos here?

chem: If you’re in Canada, what you’re describing were called "Ice n’ Creamy" and I loved those things too.

Ghosted by Steve Brandon @ 06/22/2004 4:28 AM EDT

After reading this feature, I went on a quest to find these sacred pops. Last time I had one was in 1988 or 1989. Went to popsicle.com and aside from that site sucking, there was no information whatsoever about Pudding Pops.

So I left work and hit 5 different chain grocery stores. Nothing. Frustrated, I recalled that Popsicle bought Good Humor, so I gave that site a whirl. Sure enough, there was a store locator that showed which stores carried the Pops.

Only place in Milwaukee you can buy them is Jewel Osco – the only store I didn’t check. I bought $62.65 worth of Pudding Pops. That’s 17 boxes and cleared out their stock.

Just like Otter Pops aren’t the same as they used to be, the new Pudding Pops aren’t either. A very reasonable facsimile though. The flavors don’t seem as robust, and the couple of swirl pops I had just tasted like vanilla.

BUT… It was frozen Jello pudding on a stick, and I didn’t have to toil to try to reproduce the desired effects. I long for the banana. I long for the milk chocolate. But in the meanwhile, I have 16 more boxes to go through.

Perhaps I’ll put a bunch in deep cold storage and give them to x-e in 10-15 years when they pull them from the shelves again.

(oh, and trajael, they never discontinued the Whatchamacallit (sp?) candy bar. I’ve been buying them on a monthly basis since my youth. As with peanut butter cups, they’re best frozen.)

Ok, there’s more. I know everyone loves Pudding Pops. Does anyone remember Jello’s Gelatin Pops? I’m not sure if that was the name, but it sounds right. Same shape as the Pudding Pops except fruity Jello.

Of course, I didn’t like them as much, but that’s just cuz they weren’t made out of pudding.

Remember those?

If they still make them (which I doubt) it shows you how much I don’t get out.
