New Article: Tamagotchi Video Adventures!

A reader was nice enough to mail me this one, and if you've ever played with a Tamagotchi, learn more about those little creatures you raised with Bandai's infamous Tamagotchi Video Adventures. It's a really odd special featuring Tamagotchi monsters running around Earth looking for souvenirs, ending off with a live action segment where some bored artist teaches kids how to draw Masktchi with the help of a sock puppet named Handy Worhol. Jesus. Still not as bad as you might think, and worth a look if you were into the stupid keychains a few years back.

Oh, I SO loved those stupid keychains. I remember when Toys R Us had a pre-order for the limited edition GOLD Tamagotchi and I bought it and waited and waited for it to arrive…it was awesome.

Well… hmmm…. ok… Since this Tamagotchi thing coincides with my first year in college, I really have nothing to say about it. I do remember the virtual pet fad thing, but I was too busy getting drunk to partake or even feign interest. I think my cousins may have had this stuff. Though I think I would enjoy that video… truly one of the more bizarre things I’ve seen you cover, Matt.

Is it just me, or does this article make anyone one else want to dig out the stupid things and play with them again?

In Japan, pervs used Tamagotchi to lure young girls into a round of bad touching. That’s how popular it was. Tamagotchi, not bad touching.

tamagotCHIA!

Congratulations Matt, you have managed to dig up something that even I,a guy who was completely obsessed with electronic pets at the time, never knew existed.
Tamagotchi was never really my favorite though,I always preferred Furby.I had fun successfully raising a Tamagotchi, got the best character and everything. But afterward I never had the desire to pick one up again.I probably still have a couple Tamas lying around here somewhere.Them and Small Soldiers,Looney Tunes and Jurassic Park Giga Pets.

And, here’s another rare cartoon courtesy of our good friend, Matt.

I never owned Tamagotchi. I was thinking of buying one, but the Pokemon craze swept in before I had the chance. Oh well. Nice work, once again, my man.

Hey Matt, I think th elink to the 4th bread is broken. It sent me to the homepage.

On another note, how do you keep your sanity? I know us Northeasterners are made of stern stuff, but Potato Head Kids and Tomagotchi back-to-back? God bless you.

Wow I never knew there was a cartoon…and I was obsessed with these guys. I had 2 Tamagotchi’s and 19 other rip offs. Like the Giga pets. But there was this girl who had me beat, she had 30…and kept them ALL on at the same time. It was madness.
I got the Bill clinton guy once, it was easy just lgnore it for a week, let the crap pile up and clean it every other day. Yeah it’s sad I remember that.

Chestnuts roasted by Jenner @ 04/27/2004 12:29 PM

I remember the Tomagotchis. That’s the strangest cartoon i’ve ever seen. I never had one but I think my older sister had one.

Chestnuts roasted by The Dragonrider @ 04/27/2004 12:36 PM

I prefered the digimon keychains to the tamagotchi. Not only could you take care of your digimon you could make it beat the shit out of your friends digimon.

Back when they were big I had a Tamagotchi. I carried that thing around for a few months at least.

There were a lot of close calls. I’d forget and leave him in my room, and then return to find him nearly starved to death, lying in a pile of LCD shit. The batteries ran out and I had to start all over again. I dropped it a few times and thankfully only scratched the screen up. But I was a devoted parent, really I was.

And then I went to the beach. And because I wouldn’t leave him at the house, he came down to the shore with me. And I still remember the moment of horror when, in the water, I realized it was in the pocket of my swimming trunks.

We tried to revive him, but the salt water had done a helluva number on the electronics inside the green, plastic egg shell. The green shell, which served as his home in life, now in death serves as his coffin.

Rest well, Tamagotchi. You’re in a better place now, I know that.

O_o

So now I know just who or what that first Tamagotchi I ever hatched was: Bill Clinton!

Through a combined effort, me and my mother kept him alive for 27 days. By the end, he needed to be fed every five minutes, meaning his surroundings needed to be cleaned just as much.

I haven’t tried another one since then (early ’98, I’d say) and the batteries have long since died, but I mentioned Tamagotchi in passing the other day, and my mother says she’d like to play it again.

Thanks for the memories, the weirdness, and the animation of the Clinton creature. I’d probably never be able to hatch him again.

I used to have like 100 of these little things…I loved them for like….2 days then let them die. Oh Matt, those mighty beans also come in Ninja Turtle and Pokemon flavors now…just a heads up. I work at Toys R Us, and I remember we got the Pokemon ones in a few weeks ago, but I think the Ninja Turtle ones are brand new.

There is a Tamagotchi game for Game Boy. And it has a Sleep option to put the little bugger in suspended animation so you can go to school or work or whatnot and not worry about it starvin’ to death while real life has you by the danglies. Anyone have the Rancor Giga Pet? I hear it had a funny instruction booklet.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 04/27/2004 2:17 PM

Speaking of Pokemon WHY HAVEN"T YOU ANSWERED MY POST ABOUT POKEMON COLLUSEUM?!

Chestnuts roasted by TOM @ 04/27/2004 2:17 PM

Haven’t played it, TOMMM. If I was going to review another Poke-game, though, it’d probably be Pokemon Snap.

My Atkins diet is ruined!

Chestnuts roasted by DeathFrogurtchi @ 04/27/2004 2:41 PM

Shawn: Nope, you’re not alone. I’m about to go on Google and see if there’s something like them for download somewhere.

Matt, I’m all for a Pokémon Snap review. That’s a really underrated and quirky game.

And upon reading the article again, this time more carefully:

" I need one of those pills they gave Jodie Foster before she spun around in the Mars ball for eight hours."

This got a good laugh, I tell you. That movie sucked so hard.

Chestnuts roasted by Behonkiss @ 04/27/2004 2:41 PM

Matt already did a quick Pokemon Snap review three years ago. No pictures to go with it, though, so I’d bet an updated article would be snazzy.

Chestnuts roasted by Volkaru @ 04/27/2004 3:27 PM

I’m all for a Zelda game review!

Or how about one of these movies:
Little Monsters
The Halloween that almost wasn’t

…Ok I’ll stop being annoying now.
Hmmm ya don’t really hear too much about that Pokemon Snap game anymore.

Chestnuts roasted by Jenner @ 04/27/2004 3:51 PM

Jenner, Matt already has a wealth of Zelda madness running around this site. Look it up with the "search" feature on the homepage. Just type in "Zelda" and watch the craziness unfold.

Pokèmon Snap review? Yeah, do it, Matt! I love that game so much. Todd r0x0r2 /\/\y b0x0r2 ololololol.

Now I want to go find an old, genuine Tamagotchi. I never had a real one, though I had about a thousand of the Imitationgotchies.

Great Caesars ghost! I´ve comepletely forgotten about those…
The Show seemed right up my alley though. I can never turn down a sock.

Chestnuts roasted by Bein @ 04/27/2004 4:10 PM

All you people where lucky, you had aliens, and dogs, and digital monsters and junk and all I had was an immortal duck.

The thing lasted for ever on his own, I could never win the kill derbies we used to do at recess in junior high. Crap duck.

Chestnuts roasted by Cannibalizer @ 04/27/2004 4:31 PM

Your Pikachu’s so fat, it jumped up in the air and got stuck!

Your Bulbasaur is so dumb, it thought the DEF on the telephone was a rap hotline!

Now, those are Pokemon Snaps!
Any others?
