04/27/2004: New Article: Tamagotchi Video Adventures!
A reader was nice enough to mail me this one, and if you’ve ever played with a Tamagotchi, learn more about those little creatures you raised with Bandai’s infamous Tamagotchi Video Adventures. It’s a really odd special featuring Tamagotchi monsters running around Earth looking for souvenirs, ending off with a live action segment where some bored artist teaches kids how to draw Masktchi with the help of a sock puppet named Handy Worhol. Jesus. Still not as bad as you might think, and worth a look if you were into the stupid keychains a few years back.

I remember Tamagotchi. I have to admit I had an alien one. I liked it for about 3 days, then it went into a drawer. I still don’t know what happened to it.

I never had a Tamagotchi. My friend Cindy did but me and like everyone else she knew would always steal it to see who could kill it first.

Look: it’s Mimitchi’s brother, Mametchi. YAY!
Yes!! I swiped my little cousin’s Tamagotchi and tossed it into the lake. She cried. Then got a new one.

I had a knock-off tamagotchi. I blame my parents, who were clueless but had seen my cousin’s damn thing. I didn’t want it, but as a bonus, it had a PUNISH button (I think it was actually labeled "scold" or something). BUT it caused a bonk-in-the-head animation and did something to the critter’s happiness and loyalty?
I whacked the CRAP out of my Tamaknockoffs.

Wow I got here early this time…
I had a Tamagotchi knock off my last year of primary (elementry) school, it was shaped like a dog.
One long word for this:
WEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRD.
::in an obsessive haze:: It’s never going to happen is it? We’re just going to sit here, pretending it will, waking up every morning running like a kid to a christmas tree, only to find out the present santa promised isn’t there! There never was a continuation was there Matt?! Just admit it, you enjoy watching me suffer. You enjoy that for the rest of my life I will wonder about what happened to Zartan and destro and all the rest there on Gilligan’s island.
Well I Tell you what? I’m going to make my own website called Y-entertainment.com and It’ll be better than this one! and yah know why? yah know why Matt? Because every article will be Action figures in crazy adventures! AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Then maybe I’ll make some smores, and you won’t be able to have any! OK, maybe you can have some, but not too many. I really like smores.

Great review, Matt — this looks like some pretty wild stuff. I was never big on the whole Tamagotchi craze (too expensive for me…), but back when I worked at KB Toys our remaining stock of Tamagotchi plushies got knocked down to a quarter apiece…so of course I bought them all. Cute little buggers, they are.

You’re sure this was originally in Japanese, Matt? The facial expressions and character designs(especially on that little girl) really don’t look like the usual Japanese style. I think this might have been a domestic job (though like almost all of our shows, it was probably animated by Koreans).

I had a Tamagotchi, but I had to stop playing with it because the emotional pain of it repeatedly dying became too much for me. It was tearing me apart inside.
I tried some of those goofy virtual pets on my computer, but everytime I turned off the computer, I would come back a few days kater, turn it on, and the pet starved to death. The stupid thing needed constant maintanence even with the computer off. I guess that if a kid can’t keep that thing alive, he shouldn’t get a real pet. I just thought it was cool running around the screen. Then of course it peed on my files.

Well… hmmm…. ok… Since this Tamagotchi thing coincides with my first year in college, I really have nothing to say about it. I do remember the virtual pet fad thing, but I was too busy getting drunk to partake or even feign interest. I think my cousins may have had this stuff. Though I think I would enjoy that video… truly one of the more bizarre things I’ve seen you cover, Matt.

I got the Bill clinton guy once, it was easy just lgnore it for a week, let the crap pile up and clean it every other day. Yeah it’s sad I remember that.

Back when they were big I had a Tamagotchi. I carried that thing around for a few months at least.
There were a lot of close calls. I’d forget and leave him in my room, and then return to find him nearly starved to death, lying in a pile of LCD shit. The batteries ran out and I had to start all over again. I dropped it a few times and thankfully only scratched the screen up. But I was a devoted parent, really I was.
And then I went to the beach. And because I wouldn’t leave him at the house, he came down to the shore with me. And I still remember the moment of horror when, in the water, I realized it was in the pocket of my swimming trunks.
We tried to revive him, but the salt water had done a helluva number on the electronics inside the green, plastic egg shell. The green shell, which served as his home in life, now in death serves as his coffin.
Rest well, Tamagotchi. You’re in a better place now, I know that.

So now I know just who or what that first Tamagotchi I ever hatched was: Bill Clinton!
Through a combined effort, me and my mother kept him alive for 27 days. By the end, he needed to be fed every five minutes, meaning his surroundings needed to be cleaned just as much.
I haven’t tried another one since then (early ‘98, I’d say) and the batteries have long since died, but I mentioned Tamagotchi in passing the other day, and my mother says she’d like to play it again.
Thanks for the memories, the weirdness, and the animation of the Clinton creature. I’d probably never be able to hatch him again.

There is a Tamagotchi game for Game Boy. And it has a Sleep option to put the little bugger in suspended animation so you can go to school or work or whatnot and not worry about it starvin’ to death while real life has you by the danglies. I remeber these, during the craze we had a school trip to the Isle of White (I live in England, its off the south coast) and loads of people bought them. Then some girls trashed there room for some reason. Then one of the girls Tamagotchis died and she cried and cried and cried for like a day. But the teachers thought she was crying because she was sorry or something for trashing the room and she didnt get in trouble, the other girls did. They werent allowed to go down to the arcade and couldnt go to the cafe. Man they were pissed at the girl who got off.

Actually, I believe it’s made in America because this cartoon features Gaijintchi (the Bill Clinton guy) and Zatchi (the alien looking guy). Both of those characters never appear in the Japanese counterparts of Tamagotchi. Oyajitchi was in Gaijintchi’s place, while instead of Zatchi, you’d get either Sekitoritchi or Charitchi.
Anyway, Matt, you should review the "Songs from the Flintstones" album that came out in 1961. I heard that the "Meet the Flintstones" song is in there, but they have different lyrics, like a reference to Dino and a "Meet the Rubbles" section. You should include an MP3 of the song presented in this version.

I’d just started college during the whole Tamagotchi craze and had no money and no interest in raising a machine, but my younger siblings both had them. I had a strong facisnation with virtual pets also. My craziest knock-off was a fish thing where you had to blindly adjust it’s tank temperature and also READ TO IT to calm it down… It died and became a skeleton (unlike most virtual pets who became ghosts or angels) right away, and it’s batteries soon followed.
Bandai’s going to release new Tamagotchi keychains with all characters from both previous versions and it has wireless link-up amongst other new features.
If you want an effortless Devimon (AKA Darkmon) in Digimon, just start a new digimon and set the clock to the middle of the night AFTER it hatches without feeding it or anything. When it goes to sleep (I don’t remember if the lights needed to be off or not), go back to the clock, and go into the clock set mode and leave it that way (this is how you’d pause the 2nd Tamagotchi version, only the digimon NEEDS to be asleep during this so it doesn’t starve). Come back in 7 days, and *POOF!* you got a little digital Satan that can actually beat a well-raised Greymon 50% of the time.

Regarding the Japan status of this cartoon: I seem to recall a review circa 1997 in Animerica of a one-shot Tamagotchi OVA special (original video animation = animation produced to be sold direct-to-video), but, when I looked up Tamagotchi in the Anime News Network encyclopedia, all I could find was an entry for a short-lived Tamagotchi TV series, not a one-shot special.
It’s true that it doesn’t look Japanese, and, while you can make a handful of generalizations about the anime "look" which will apply to about 90% of Japanese cartoons regardless of subject, content, or tone (with the most common element being the two-tone shading… more so than even "big eyes"), there are a handful of exceptions which look nothing like the rest of anime-dom, like Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbors the Yamadas, or Sazae-san (the longest-running weekly TV cartoon in world history, with over 1750 half-hours… before anyone says it, Doraemon’s episode count is inflated with several hundred mini-episodes; in terms of total half-hours, Sazae-san is longer), or Crayon Shin-chan. This thing might be an American-Japanese co-production; amazingly I can’t find much about it on the web.
The bit about the "How to Draw Tamagotchi" segment reminds me of the "Arlen School of Drawing" tutorial from the second King of the Hill DVD box set, which I thought might be a brief, two-minute overview of the general art style on the show but really is a long, dry tutorial on how to draw each major King of the Hill character, step-by-step. It’s boring if you’re not drawing along, but I don’t think it was meant for casual viewing.
You know what’s a wierd toy in the same vein? They’re much more recent, and I forget exactly what they were called, but it was an actual serial code scanner with an LCD screen on the side, and you would go around scanning the codes on just about anything that still had a tag and it would give you pet monsters that you could battle like Pokemon. To get a shit load of creatures you just had to stick it in your pocket and take it shopping with you. It was wierd as hell, but I thought a strangely clever idea.

Ok, off my nit-picking soapbox now.
Never owned a Tamowhatchi. Have heard of them, but never had an inkling to buy one.
I wonder if Matt could find any of the old Andy Kauffman children’s shows that he tried to do? I bet those would make a classic review. Andy is pretty early 80’s and not really known as a children’s actor, but he did try to break into show business by making a Howdy Doody-type children’s show. Personally, i think Andy got sick of the negative spotlight and became Raffi.

Then to top it all off, I had to pacify my wife as we went out to dinner w/ my mom, they can’t stand each other. My 16mo daughter threw all of my food all over the restraunt, and I couldn’t sleep again last night. hope today’s better.

I remember my little sisters were Tamagotchi crazy too. They each had a real Tamagotchi and a knock-off Gigapet. For the most part they took horrible care of them, and I was often tempted to notify P.E.T.D.A. I would have done it too, if I hadn’t feared for the lives of my family members. They’ve got genome-enhanced Sam Fisher clones working for them, and it’ll take more than a few coupons for free McDonalds burgers to get them off your back, let me tell you.
Caleb, I know what you’re talking about. There are a few different toys like that. One attached to the Gameboy and worked with a Pokemon-like game, but that was only released in Japan. I seem to remember the other handheld games came out a while ago, and I think I recently saw a commercial for some rehashed version. I think the name was something with an unecessary, annoying "z" at the end, like ‘Scannerz’ or ‘Barcodez’.

Ah, tamagotchi. I had one of thems once. I wasn’t all that fond of it so I decided I would sell it to my friend, I was 11 or so and 10 dollars still seemed like a huge amount of money. When my mom found out, though, she was really upset because it was a gift, and she made me give the money back. So I probably still have the thing somewhere…I just remember I was really bad at taking care of it…

When Little Brother moved to his new apartment a couple of years ago, we moved a fridge in the new place, and I found the previous tenants DinoKun virtual pet. It liked to play Rock, Scissors, Paper.

I knew someone who had one of these things and no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t keep the thing happy. When I took it the little freak wouldn’t die no matter how hard I tried to kill it. Did anyone else ever have one of the miserable yet resiliant bastards?

Tim @ 04/28/2004 1:35 PM EDT
Cool…Matt apologized. You’re forgiven.
As far as Tamagotchis go…I ended up getting one, seeing as I was in fifth grade and a mindless sheep. They were fun little toys at the time…but it’s spent the last six years or so in a sock drawer.
I also had an R2-D2 one…the little bastard wouldn’t die, no matter what I did. He would just fall over onto his side and get up if I paid him any attention at all. Assuming the battery hasn’t died on that one yet, it’s probably still laying there, waiting for care that’s never going to come…
I have a Tamagotchi, but I have trouble getting it to work because the battery compartment is broken

What would a Matt Tamagotchi look like? Give it beer to keep it happy. Let it play on its computer. Feed it ChocoDiles. Clean up the poop and empty bottles. Add a microphone so when it cries, you just say "Porn" and it stays quiet for fifteen minutes.

Hey I remember Tamagotchis! Me and my little brother used to have them, and when they got boring in two days, we played Tamagotchi baseball with them. Also, after reading this article, I cleaned up my computer desk and found a copy of the old PC game. I was disappointed when I found out that it was the exact same thing as the keychains, and even more disappointed when I got bored and discovered it doesn’t make a good baseball.
I didn’t actually enjoy the Chia plot that much. I must be the only one who’s glad things are back to the regularly scheduled programming.
I had a tamagotchi dog I think. My sister almost flushed it down the toilet because it started "barking" at 5 in the morning. I got sick of it and sold it for five bucks.

My little brother had a different one of those electronic pet things, everytime he’d start it off…he’d come back to find out that I killed it by overpunishing it and such. Man, when I’m a father, my kids are going to be soo afraid to do anything that even smells bad. Fear will become their only comfort, and pain their only companion. Of course thats only when they disobey my comand. HAHAHAHAHA

My cousins had nano-babies, and I, being the sadistic bastard that I am, consistently punished them.
Okay, I ‘m lying. I may be sadistic, but I couldn’t find it in myself to hurt a baby. Not even a digital one. I actually took care of them for about an hour.

Post 100!
I remember Tamagotchi - used to be a authority on the little buggers many years ago.
The cartoon looks like something out of Jhonen Vasquez. It piques my interest and want to see the thing now.
They’ve shown a lot of Scannerz commercial in my area lately and what most stands out about them is the ninth-rate character art. I mean, this stuff was really hideous, like they got someones 14-year-old cousin to draw ‘em. I swear I’m not exagerating in the least. Hell, I could do better.
Anyway, my name is link to the website, which unfortunately doesn’t have the commercial I’m thinking of. There’s a bunch of other cool (read: supremely cheesy) stuff there, though.
ch…ch…chia…
I wonder if chia pets are low carb…well, the part that grows anyways…
Back to watching conan.

It is no wonder that the machines dominated, destroyed or enslaved the humnans in films like Terminator and The Matrix. Look what we do to them. If you watch the Animatrix, you can see what we do to the machines, and it is mirrored right here in these comments.
Have fun punishing your Tama’s, cause paybacks a bitch.

Matt, what’s you’re opinion on Gamecube and Pokemon Ruby and Saphire? Personally, even though the Gamecube doesn’t play any DVDs, I still like it
PS. If you have Pokemon RUby and/or Saphire, can you please review it?
PPS I’m really sorry to be annyoung you with al these Pokemon posts, but it’s been such a long time since ther’ve been ANYTHING Pokemon on this site for a long while.
PPS. How many articles till the new Super-Naturals article comes out?

Shit! How did you manage to pull the storyline from a cartoon that has blips and beeps?? My review would of been like, "the wizard, apparently likes crafted pieces of gooey wood, so the blue guy wins."
PS..I’m sure you have heard of Fensler GI JOE spoof PSAs, if not watch them. Also, there is a band out there called the G.I. Joe Killas, that rap entire cartoon episodes. It will be like the Baroness and Destro talking about cobra cash. They are just known as ‘The Killas’ now. Aparently they dress up like the characters too at their shows.

Turn a flower pot upside down, draw a face on it. Put a layer of potting soil on top, and sprinkle some grass seeds on that. Set it in a shallow dish and water the whole thing. Occasionally pour some water in the dish and the pottery will soak up the water and keep the soil moist. Soon, the seed will sprout and your flowerpot noggin will have "hair!" Not a Chia per se, but you can draw your favorite face on the pot. I have no idea where I read this from, but as Berra once said, "You can observe a lot by just watching."

kingklash @ 04/29/2004 2:36 PM EDT
I forgot to mention it has to be a clay flowerpot.

the x-e’er is once again hungry. Having fed 3 days ago, the article has had more than enough time to digest, and the blog regurgitation has come to a standstill. the creatrues need something fresh to feed upon, no other website will do. they alertly scan the website, refreshing by the minuite to see what new prey may come. in the background the natives chant for the x-e’ers. calling for a victom…..cha cha cha chia!

Dude! I was actually going to send you this very video, thinking it might be review-worthy, but I didn’t really want to part with my one copy. I’m glad someone else did.
Makes me think I should go through with my other potential submissions, unless you already have "lumpkin the pumpkin" or "monsters B gone", which you probably do because they were sold at the dollar tree on halloween.
I love the secondary wizard of tamagotchi. That’s the best title ever and he reminds me of a fat orko.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention - you seem to have overlooked the fact that masktchi’s babbling little voice is identical to that of Slimer from the real ghostbusters (same actor, same gibberish)
