04/07/2004: Movie Review: Munchie Strikes Back!

“Munchie Strikes Back” is the second sequel to 1987’s “Munchies,” though you’d never guess that from watching it. Howard Heeseman voices a creepy-but-friendly space alien charged with helping a lonely boy find happiness in his awful, hopeless, fatherless life. I believe this one made the cable rounds a few years ago. Review includes a few video clips and a lot of general ill-will towards Munchie.

Pod People! Time of the Apes! Robert Vaughn as a middle-aged Teenage Cave Man! If it wasn’t for the wis-dumb of Joel, Mike, Tom, and Croooow, I would have been scarred by the horrible horror of these films. Or at least I never would have known that other people talked through these films like I do. "I’m huge!"

Ghosted by kingklash @ 04/08/2004 5:26 PM EDT

I saw this film. It wasn’t bad, but it was definitely low budget. Munchie was a pretty bad puppet and in fact, you can tell that the puppeteer isn’t well hidden since in most scenes, Munchie is against a wall or you see the top half of his body.

Does anyone know that name of the movie where these little mini-aliens that looked like robots came to Earth and helped an old couple? I keep thinking it is Batteries Not Included, but isn’t that the movie with Johnny 5? I’m so confused, and this is the only place I know to turn for help! ;)

Ghosted by Gabbylicious @ 04/08/2004 8:49 PM EDT

Batteries Not Included is right. The Johnny 5 movie was Short Circuit. Try http://www.imdb.com

Matt needs to review Short Circuit if he hasn’t already.

Anybody remember ‘Mac & Me’? That alien movie where the boy in the wheelchair finds a whole FAMILY of ugly, naked aliens (who do this weird ‘family whistle’ thing to talk) and needs to save them— turns out they need to drink COCA-COLA IN ORDER TO SURVIVE! Also, before the end of the movie the aliens and the kid go to a huge party at a McDonalds. I watched it as a kid and loved it….Turns out it was PRODUCED BY COCA-COLA AND MCDONALDS AND THE WHOLE MOVIE WAS BASICALLY A GIANT COMMERCIAL! Found that out the other day- man, I feel so jaded and used :0(

Dammit, Matt reviews are hillarious because they are bad movies. Short Circuit is an AWSOME movie.

#5 is ALIVE!

Re: "Mac & Me"-Heck, review the darn movie already! At least in the context of it being a ripoff of "E.T."-like themes. It did have a slim chance to make it. Remember "Willy Wonka" was partly financed by "Quaker Oats".

Thanks Trajeal ;)

"Fritos?……..here?"
That was great; I am surprised that you didn’t mention that Howard Hesseman played "Dr. Johnny Fever" on WKRP in Cincinnati.

I thought it was safe to assume that everyone would know that. :)

Matt,
I had my cursor sitting over the XE link in my Favorites folder, and the pop-up over it said "X-Entertainment, Summerhouse of Baboochi". What in the blue fuck does that mean. I’m so confused I don’t think I can work for the rest of the day. I’m no good to no one now. Thanks, Matt. Thanks alot!!!

For more info on Baboochi, check the "Best of the Rest" Toy Fair article on the main page. Or read Dianetics.

Thanks man. Everything makes sense now. All hail L(avarius) Ron Hubbard! He will deliver us from the evil Thetans and Xenu! Batshit crazy – its for me!

Did anyone else notice that in the clip where Munchie is "Culkin-ing" Shelby, Shelby is doing an amazing rendition of Daffy Duck all spun out? Listen especially to the sound from the clip and imagine Daffy all hopped-up.
I think all of Munchie’s comedic material was pilfered from Dave Coulier. Anyone up for a game of "Full House: The Board Game"?

Ghosted by Never Eat Shredded Wheat @ 04/09/2004 2:50 PM EDT

MuppetBaby, I’ve been begging Matt for a "Mac and Me" review for the better part of year now, but he just won’t listen. Its cuz I’m Canadian, I’ll bet.

Incidently, what’s with WWE moving all their Canadian babyfaces to American hometowns? What’s that about.

Okay, ranting done. Now review "Mac and Me".

Ghosted by A-wel Cruiz @ 04/09/2004 2:55 PM EDT

Well I think Munchie is probably the uglies alien of all time, which is quite a feat considering you have things like ET and crap all going for the same title.

Oh ya, and I’ve been begging since the beginning of time for a Friday 13th review…

Ghosted by ANdrew @ 04/09/2004 3:30 PM EDT

A-wel Cruiz: Well, Trish Stratus, Christian, and Chris Jericho all still retain their Canadian hometowns because Toronto and Winnipeg don’t get easily confused with other counties or states.

Chris Benoit, on the other hand, comes from Alberta, which is just like Atlanta, except it isn’t, and you can blame whoever’s writing Lillian Garcia’s cue cards.

As for Gail Kim, they felt she would seem more ‘heel’ if she acknowledged her Korean heritage over Canada – two heel Divas from Toronto, oh no no no, this will NOT do.

And ON TOPIC: Not that I want Matt to suffer unneccesarily, but I bet he’d feel my pain if he watched "The Black Hole" with Ernest Borgnine and reviewed it so that we can all spread the suffering. AGONY PLUS.

Ghosted by Niq @ 04/09/2004 3:46 PM EDT

I think I’m starting to fall in love with Munchie, in a totally nonsexual way of course. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Ghosted by Goonie4Life @ 04/09/2004 3:53 PM EDT

I think Munchie has a strong resemblence to Chris Kattan from SNL

Niq, don’t forget Tony Perkins getting shredded by Maximillian, a robot that shoud have been better than he was. Why something with anti-grav should move as slow as that and still be a threat, ain’t right.

Ghosted by kingklash @ 04/09/2004 3:56 PM EDT

Just did a X-E search on Black Hole and this was from the Go-Bot Sex comments:
http://www.x-entertainment.com/updates/entries/archives/00000197.html
"This reminds me of the dirty scenes in Disney’s The Black Hole that I watched again on cable the other night.

In the final fight between the Maximilian robot and V.I.N.CENT. (Roddy McDowell voiced the Vital Information Necessary CENTralized robot according to IMDB.com), Max and Vin are locked in combat and Max’s wang pops up to knock Vin off him.

Later, when we see Reinhardt’s corpse floating in the Black Hole, he pops up to scare the audience and the next thing you know the Max robot mounts him and they "merge" into a super being that control the humanoids left over in some form of Hell. Although dirty, this ending is still the coolest I have seen in a Disney movie

I will always take The Black Hole over Event Horizon because it has perverted robots and Ernest Borgnine! Reinhardt said it best, ‘Something caused all this. But what caused… that cause?’" Posted by Michael @ 07/13/2003 02:14 AM EST

Chad: mapquest.com is your friend.

And I know it’s wrong, but MuppetBaby’s comments about Mac and Me had me in figurative stitches. It also has me curious: When people stumble onto the blog for the first time, do they read any of the older entries? How about using the search box before asking Matt to write an article about something?

I saw this bad movie about a guy who has an ailen in his apartment. All I remember is the alien mentioning a woman’s "bodacious tatas."

Ghosted by JG! @ 04/09/2004 5:41 PM EDT

Chris Kattan. Haha!

I was just curious, do all alien movies try to hock some sort of food? Is that a rule for these movies? You’ve got Munchie and his Fritos, ET with his Reecie Peecies, and Mac with his McDonald’s and Coke. Please explain that to me.

Ghosted by Goonie4Life @ 04/09/2004 6:48 PM EDT

Niq, nononononono. Jericho was just moved to Manhatten, NY, and Trish and Christian, while still billed from Toronto, are heels not babyfaces, as per my original point.

Incidently, Gail Kim was just relocated from Toronto to Korea, and La Resistance were just moved from France to Quebec. Seriously, what the fuck is going on here??? If Edge is introduced from L.A. in the near future, I’m gonna flip out. Does this company realize their next PPV is in Canada?

Review "Mac and Me"

Ghosted by A-wel Cruiz @ 04/09/2004 7:03 PM EDT

THIS JUST IN: Sega has announced that Wolf Hawkfield, the Canadian Pro-Wrestler character of its award-winning "Virtua Fighter" series will be relocated to his new hometown of Tampa Bay, Florida for "Virtua Fighter 5". Explanations were not forthcoming.

Sega also revealed they will hold off the release of "Astro Boy" for PS2 until Matt reviews "Mac and Me"

Ghosted by A-wel Cruiz @ 04/09/2004 7:07 PM EDT

Jericho in Manhattan? Well, that’s just silly. And it was semi-implied that La Resistance were from Quebec anyways.

And I thought Wolf was from Alaska.

My god, how could you watch this movie? I could barely make it through the damn review!

speaking of Canadians, I think Matt should review "the raccoons"

Ghosted by keegan B. @ 04/11/2004 8:51 PM EDT

I just realized, Munchie Strikes Back was directed by the same guy who directed Swamp Thing Returns.

An extra three points!

Hey, is the guy that plays Kronos in this movie Angus Scrimm? The "Tall Man" from the Phantasm series?

Ghosted by BaronVonHotPants @ 04/13/2004 11:14 AM EDT

Has the same resemblance to Chris Kattan? No way Chris kattan is hot!
but…well, maybe a little in his Mr. peepers characters.

I really wonder what posesses people to make bad Direct-to-Video movies, unless they’re Disney and can afford to lose a couple thou.
I’ve noticed that most of the bad DTV children’s movies are made by companies out in Canada, probibly filming across from the latest Power Rangers series.
I do remember seeing one of those movies on HBO and it had to do something with the return of Merlin or one of King Arthur’s knights and it had the dude who played Stiles in Teen Wolf. That was pretty bad…

Ghosted by AngeFaitore @ 04/20/2004 2:23 PM EDT

Those clips kill me. I had to hit the floor laughing at little Chris’ terrible acting skills!

Ghosted by R.J.S. @ 05/12/2004 10:43 AM EDT

Sorry to say this but i did watch those two movies as a kid… the movies were good when I was little of course because i couldn’t tell the difference between good and bad. But yeah now i look back on the movies and wonder… why the fuck didn’t I have nightmares of that creepy little fucker?!

Ghosted by Matthew @ 05/20/2004 5:05 PM EDT

I’ve seen this work of horror. The only movie in the world that was worse than this was The Skateboard Kid. Munchie has got to be the absolute worst movie puppet thing in the history of movies. He looks like a filthy, child-molesting shitbag. Fuck him.

Ghosted by THUNDERGOOSE @ 06/15/2004 10:09 PM EDT

I remember seeing the box for this, but I was never brave enough to attempt a viewing. I commend you for watching this all the way through (even if it did take you 14 times). I could barely make it through the clips. The baseball one was classic, though. Keep up the good work!

Hi there. I would like to comment on Munchie Strikes Back and the review from Matt. First off….I was the person playing Elvis in the movie. I am not of Asian decent(not sure where you came up with that one) and thought my impersonation of Elvis wasnt bad considering it was the first time acting and my lines were not scripted. The director had me make up my own lines. The movie was never intended for the theaters but I still believe it was a good little movie. It was fun doing, and I have fond memories of making it.
