03/30/2004: New Article: Krang’s Android Body!
We’ve seen lots of Krang here on the site. Several months back, we saw the TMNT episode where Krang finally got that body of his. Now, here’s a look at the toy based on it. “Krang’s Android Body,” made by Playmates in 1991, is a towering inferno of half-naked bald belly-brained terror made of plastic and sin. I love it, every part of it. For those curious: yes, the Krang figure was removable. You want a pocket brain pal, you can have it. Review features a bonus section where Krang Jell-O molds fall apart.

Hurrah an article.

Had him when I was little and still have him, along with nearly every TMNT toy made. I got a boatload of old toys mostly in good shape, which is what originally attracted me to this website. Love it! Great work! Bring on the Chia Plot!
Random Trivia: Krang’s species are called "Utroms."

I have the Krang wit da veins. As a side tip, mix a little milk or cream in the Jell-o to make a opaque, organ-y hue for the mold. Read "Penn and Teller Play With Their Food" for a recipe for a heart-shaped mold that bleeds when you cut it. Yummy, yummy, yummy, I got brain in my tummy.

Great article, Matt. I just wanted to say something about the pizza points. I so wanted to collect them back in the day, but my mom wouldn’t let me due to the insane prices in addition to the points that you had to collect.
We never had Krang, but I remember getting one of those order forms with the TMNT Party Wagon (a sweet vehicle, I must say). The merchandise was cool, but Playmates was ripping us off by making us collect 20 points or so (most figures were worth about one) and then spending $15.00 or so on top of that.

Was that a video copy of "Basket Case 2" behind Krang? I can’t believe they made a sequal to that.
And I had the first version of the Krang toy, but not the second. I think it was released when I was getting out of TMNT. Too bad, because it looks like something I would want…

I got the android body from some kid on the bus way back in like 3rd grade. He just handed it to me and said I could keep it for punching this mean kid who always bothered him. I still have him, but sadly never had krang to go with it.

I have this still, up in my attic somewhere I think. Brought it into show and tell three times I think. Once with Michaelangelo as a Sailor.
I also had a number of graphic novels reprinting the original comics, and I always found it funny that in the comics, the Krang-race were semi-good guys stranded on Earth who’d inadvertantly created the Turtles, and in the cartoon Krang was evil.
In the comics, they also had android bodies, but human sized and with skins so as to blend in with people.

I had the original Krang toy. I could never get that damn gun to stay on the side of his transport either. I also have a few of the TMNT tapes including the shredder is splintered one. Ahh, TMNT is one of the greatest shows ever. I Like the King Kong Bundy refference too. They should make a TMNT the movie 2: Secret of the ooze figure of Super Shredder cause he’s bad ass. And to end it, I propose that the TMNT 3 movie be erased from everyones memory, then they could make a new TMNT 3 and have it be good. X-E is Super Fly.

I had the original Krang figure–in fact I think I had two of ‘em. I never got the Android Body, but I so wanted it. I remember seeing it in a Toys R Us once, and I’ll never forget that holy image. By the time the smaller version came out, I had stopped collecting the figures. I have that coloring book, btw–it’s a great piece of literature. Up there with Chaucer. Seriously.

Lonewolf-
They did make a Super Shredder, ’cause I had him. He was normal action figure size and came with a mace for a weapon and a jar of mutagenic ooze. He was also bad ass.
On a side note, I was just remembering a commercial I used to see all the time as a (80’s) kid. It was for an educational product aimed at teaching kids french. I think there was a mascot named Mumpie or Flubby or something darling like that, and the memorable line was spoken by some kid who bragged that he was now fluent in french by saying, (phonetically) "Je swee a-lun-fee."
I’m pretty sure that boy grew up to be loved as a dead, gay son.

Thanks for the news D-d-dave-some. And I remember the Muzzy commercial too. I also believe its still played on tv to thsi very day. The kid said something in french…the kids a traitor to America. I hate the french. To bad Super Shredder couldn’t go and kick thier asses. It’d be over in 3 seconds.

Ah the Krangs body toy. I never owned it, but damn was I jealous of some kid at the Toys R Us that got it. Oh well Unfortunatley I never knew anyone that had it either so I couldnt even play with it. Anyway they dont play the Muzzy commercial as much as they used to, but me and my friend made some joke about Muzzy being from Franceland where everyone talked in that goofy ass deep voice he did. Anyway heres some words from some familar characters about the Chia Plot absense..
Storm Shadow: Say Commander, what ever happened to that Chia plot deal?
Frack: Well Storm Shadow, these things take time. You read re-read em lately? Comedy Gold! I know two weeks seems like 2 hundred fucking years when your waiting for some of my great one liners like "Za-ZOW!" and "Stark Raving!!!" but time shall come.
Storm Shadow: Uhh commander you know how long its been?
Frack: Uhhh lemme guess….2 weeks?
Storm Shadow: FOUR weeks
Frack: Sweet mother of fucker. Jesus holy and shit!!!!

I was always pissed off at Krang, because I used to read the original Eastman and Laird comics and there are guys who are like Krang who ride around in the stomaches of robots that really look like people, but they were good for the most part. They ran the Company TCRI (as oposed to TGRI in the 2nd movie) and they were trying to get back to thier home planet. Well things didn’t exactly work out, and they wound up sending the turtles to another world where they met the Fugitoid.
Also aparently all of this happened in the new cartoon. Which is why I must say that I like this one more than the original, even though I haven’t gotten a chance to see it in a long time.
If they get to the storyline with Donny and Casey solving the mystery of the Missing Bull, I’ll be the happiest person who wishes he was still 10 alive.

I know I DEFINATELY had the original Krang, I didn’t have the 2nd one, and I don’t know if I have the 3rd version, I’d check but all of my TMNT, as well as all the other toys I’ve amassed over the years have ended up in several upon several boxes in my basement.
Stangely, I have enough interesting action figures to make a segment similar to the Chia Pet story (which is very excellent, I might add), and I even have an unused Chia Pet! Weird…(actually, had a Chia Pet because my mom attempted to grow it…it didn’t go quite as successful as the Cobras’ though)

One day, the first week of 4th grade, one of my future best friends let me play with his TMNT coloring book - my first intro to what would soon become my first "crack-like" addiction.
At Christmas that year the only figure that could be found in any store was the original Krang figure - so everyone in my boy scout troop all got the same toy at the Christmas pary that year.

Ah, Telefrancais. "Café, te, ou la musique?" Funny in a lame way, but not as cool as the adventures of Buraun-san in the "Japanese For Busy People" videos.
My final project in second-year French was a partially-animated video in Hypercard, an old Mac program which was sort of a precursor to Flash, in a way. The plot involved Ananá becoming an evil necromancer, and raising an army of Les Skelettes to conquer the world, growing to enormous sized and eating the boy and girl, and Pilote finally destroying him by crashing her plane into him.

I had the original version of Krang with that walker thingy, but I had pretty much lost interest in the Turtles by the time they made the full-bodied ones.

UTROMS!!!! Yes! Those are the Real Krangs! Good Guys! APRIL’S BLACK! BAXTER’S BLACK! YOU ALL WORSHIP THE ARCHIE COMICS WATERED DOWN VERSION OF TMNT! AHAHAHAH!
by the way, There was a TMNT graphic novel called "Body Count" that came out in like ‘96 that comsisted of Casey and Raph going after a drug lord with guns A-Blazing. They also hook up with a large breasted hispanic woman at some point. It was so bizarre when I read it, because Raph blasting off rounds was just a lil off, but the story kicked ass!

I don’t get it, I’m fairly close to the same age as most people on this site, yet when tmnt was coming out I was still playing w/ micromachines. everyone at school laughed at me, not cuz it wasn’t the coolest toy, but because all toys and stuff were too "little kid stuff" for us in the 5th and 6th grade. None of my friends or myself ever had tmnt stuff.

I just remembered that I also had that Krang coloring book too. Hooray for Matt for helping me remember things I would never recall otherwise. Also I think Krang has been on the new cartoon, but he doesn’t look as good in my opinion. Less like a brain and more like some sort of pink tree stump. And there’s no bald android body, at least not yet.

I’ve got a funny sotry about TMNT: back in the second grade, I had to take a day off from school. Later that day I went over my buddies house to see what we did in class today. Somehow (and I’m not totally clear on exactly how) the conversation ended up like this:
Buddy: "I’m a Leo."
Me: "I’m deffenitally Raph!"
Buddy: "No, I’m talking about the astological sign we spoke about in class."
Me: "Oh …"
I think that should sum up the TMNT craze in a nutshell.

Just looked for Krang’s Android body on Ebay. It’s going for 35.00 and a free 50th Anniversary turtle figure. Is there really a 50th Anniversy figure for the turtles? Are they really over 50 years old? I think not. This seller must be scheming something.

ME : I do believe you are referencing the French-Canadian hit show "Telefrancais". Primarily shown in da classroom, it featured "anana" the pineapple (btw anana is french for pineapple…real original). I remember anxiously awaiting the performances from the hot rock band "Les Skelettes" which were basically a bunch of cheap ass skeleton puppets singing and dancing on a makeshift stage.

Someone has to bring up the TMNT anime again, so, TMNT ANIME! Who else would like to see american cartoons as anime? A lot of the 70’s saturday morning stuff would work. Speed Buggy, Groovie Goolies, anything by Sid and Marty Krofft. Remember the episode of Real GhostBusters where they went to Japan and were given Ecto-Ichi? Imagine Live-Action GhostBusters Sentai. I’d better calm down a bit before I come up with something ugly. Like Akira and Stimpy.

I loved that Krang and Walker set. After getting a few of the TMNT figures and playing with my sibs and then getting him, I was rockin’.
VERY coicidental, one of my little sibs who likes to play with my old stuff from time to time about a week ago, and POW!, the giant Krang Body, which we got only after the Walker after some time and the only thing I could remember from playing with that is the very cool mirror in the stomach.

Though I was heavily into TMNT, I never got this figure. Had every other one, just not this. Never really remembered even wanting it.
Strangely enough, in that second picture from the coloring book, Krang looks suspiciously like Meatwad (the character from "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," not the above poster).
And nothing beats "Krang Goes Babysitting." I still laugh my ass off at that one.

^^ Ah! That is the scariest damn think I’ve ever seen. It kinda reminds me of a Pac Man Ghost with rabies.
That said, awhile ago I had sent an email concerning a possible appearance of a revamped Krang in the new Millenium Cartoon series, and they stated that there was no way, no how they could do that citing that with the Utrom story arc (Of which I’m guessing is close to the comic story arc.) it left no room for Krang. On one hand it saddens me, but on another maybe, just maybe, there’s a way to bring Krang to life. Of course I’d like to see him look more like this than a rabid Pac Man Ghost:

brandon,
I was the same way…. you know, when the turtles craze hit big time, I was at that age where I was beginning to look beyond toys and focus more on Nintendo. Only a few of my friends got the turtles toys, because there was that stigma that we were getting too old for action figures. But it didn’t keep me from lusting over the product. The solution? Trips to the arcade to play TMNT and trips to my friend’s to play Nintendo’s TMNT… the original one, you know, the one where all the turtles looked like Raph on the front of the cartridge.

Ahh…the good old NES. Still the best system out there. I can remeber playing the first TMNT on it for hours. It was by far the hardest game I have ever played. And I never have heard of anyone beating theat damn game ever. All of the emulators that I have tried for it just go black once you get to the part where you would enter the technodrome. I think that the developers made the game soo hard that they didn’t even bother putting an ending on the game, cause no one would ever beat it.

The second level(the dam) with the seaweed = the hardest, most aggervating level in any game ever created.

And I have seen the game beaten before. Of course, we used the quicksave feature on the emulator, but it was beaten. Shredder can kill you in one hit. I hate his ass.

The trick with the seaweed level is to leave one of the 1st and easy bobmbs, get all the rest, and kill one turtle. If you have one turtle w/a decent amount of life left, u can fill up the other 3 pretty easy in that 1st building in level 3 (where u get the rockets) and go get the dead turtle. Of course, this means u cant lose a turtle in level 3, but I never had a problem with that. The Technodrome though, that’s friggin impossible. All the enemies way too hard in there for me, and way too confusing a lay out.

TOP1214 @ 04/01/2004 3:26 PM EST
I mastered that damn seaweed level on the NES and it never occoured to me to cheat like that. I feel like I’ve wasted a LOT of time.
That game was pretty freakin hard for a kids game after that point.
Part 2 was SUPER easy in comparison, especially if you played two players, but man, that game was cool. Moreso in the arcade(that polar bear boss is pretty weak…) but still…

I could see Krang (the brain, not the Klingon) as being from a related species to the Utroms. Kinda like Vulcans and Romulans. Wandering around the galaxy in his freakin huge spacecraft, the Technodrome, on the trail of the Utroms, and eventually finding Earth. The Turtles slap him silly, and send him on his way. On the subject of TMNT video games, my favourite was TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project for the NES. It was so awesome how each turtle had his own unique ability and you could switch turtles between lives rather than having to stay with the same turtle. Plus the bosses were dang cool (especially Super Shredder). It’s too hard to play with one player, though, so playing with two players is advised.
You know, it’s really too bad that there was never a TMNT game for the NES that utilized the four-player devices. It would’ve been so bad-assed to be able to play as all four TMNT at the same time. Oh well, at least you could do it in the arcade games.

If you want a more Believeable "Krang Pink" For your Krang Jello Mold, Use Watermelon Flavored Jello and fold in some Cool Whip then let set. It will Be "Krang Pink" (and taste delicious) For Instructions:
Preparation
STIR boiling water into gelatin in large bowl at least 2 minutes until completely dissolved. Stir in cold water. Refrigerate about 1-1/4 hours or until slightly thickened (consistency of unbeaten egg whites). Gently stir in 2 cups of the whipped topping with wire whisk until well blended. Refrigerate about 15 minutes or until thickened (spoon drawn through leaves definite impression).

Here is some good Mr. Show/Adult Swim news:
http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/503/503483p3.html
"…Lazzo confessed his inability to explain quite what the concept was behind the next pilot, Tom Goes to the Mayor, whose executive producer is Bob Odenkirk (of the cult cable comedy Mr. Show). Each episode has small town citizen Tom Peters bring one of what the press release calls his "crackpot ideas" to the town’s Mayor, and comedy ensues as they try to implement the scheme. In the pilot, for example, they set bear traps out around children’s playgrounds; I presume this is to protect small children from bears, but I believe the flaw in Peters’ and the Mayor’s reasoning here is evident. Voices for the show will be supplied by Odenkirk, his Mr. Show partner David Cross, Jack Black, and his Tenacious D teammate Kyle Gass."

The last boss of the tmnt nes game was shredder with a retro mutagen gun :(. Evil man. i used an invincibility code though cos i had it on the commodor 64. The ending had amazing graphics for the time, but yes, the game was mad hard.

Nate,
It would have been great to have had the 4-player option on the NES game, but I doubt the NES would have been able to handle it. The NES was bad about flickering when too many sprites were on the screen. I remember how bad it was with two-player trying to fight three foot soldiers at once or a couple of mousers. i think everything would go invisible with four turtles on the screen. …Though that might be the gimmick to go for… Invisiturtle.

Next time try this for the perfect Jello firmness.
Once it is firm you do not have to keep it refrigerated.
Sorta like a giant Gummy Bear.
3 boxes of your favorite Jello
4 packages Knox Clear Gelatin
1/2 cup sugar
4 cups boiling water
1 cup cold water
Anybody remember the ULTIMATE cross-over in craze toylines? The Turtle Trolls?

Oddly enough, Krang was one of the few original TMNT action figures my Turtle-crazy cousin never had. He had almost everything else, including some of the rareties like Mondo Gecko, the blimp, the bike, and sewer hideout. We were given his stash after he outgrew them and my brother was declared old enough to play with them and not chew them, but he played with them and kept them outside, so we no longer have any of it, unfortunantly. A lot of it wasn’t in great shape when we got it, but still.

Here’s an idea…next Valentines Day, get some white chocolate, throw it in one of those "Chocolate Factory" things with the slightest amount of red food coloring (not too much, it gotsta be pink not red), pour it into that Jello mold, and give that special someone a chocolate Krang. Say it with a Krang. Krang conquers all. It’ll be a Krang moment.

I had that Krang figure. I didn’t have his body though. I don’t recall Krang being that hard to find. It was April O’Neil I never saw in stores. NEVER!
*plays with krang body and feels accomplished*

Matt, if you add just a touch of condensed milk to red jello right before refrigerating it, it’ll give a perfect Krang-y fleshy pink color.

Dragonrider and Time-E, I concur.
April O’Neil was virtually impossible to find. When the TMNT action figures first came out, she was on the back of the box along with the 4 turtles and Splinter. So, one could say, that she was meant to be one of the 1st edition TMNT Action figures to come out.
I searched high and low for years, in hopes of finding her one day, I collected the tons of other TMNT action figures that came out, just to keep my fight scenes in line with the cartoon series.
I finally stopped collecting these action figures when they started to get lame with "Hockey Leo" and crap like that. Then months later, as if the world was trying to define the meaning of serendipity…
THERE SHE WAS….APRIL O’NEIL, I almosted S-ed myself! FINALLY! I can complete the "original" set of action figures. April O’Neil was the Terri-Bull of the M.U.S.C.L.E. Men, (to paraphrase Matt) the trump card to all TMNT Action Figure Collectors. I soon became the envy of my whole block.
The only crappy part about April was her stance. She was virtually impossible to pose in a standing position. Most of my fight scenes I constructed with my army of TMNT Action Figures consisted of her leaning up against a wall, another action figured, or her having been knocked out and laying on the floor.
In all my years of collecting TMNT action figures, I never knew they made a Giant Android Krang Suit. I knew they had one, but I never knew it was that big.
Incidently, I have 2 versions of Krang, one in his "Wheel-chair" like robot suit, that Shredder gave him before the Android suit was constructed and another Krang, in his Android Suit, but his Suit is NO WHERE near the size that Matt has featured.
Keep up your awesome work Matt.

Krang gets his real body back in one of the episodes? Which episode was that, Trippy?

My brother had this one. The problem with this figure was it really couldn’t stand too well on it’s own and it couldn’t get into the technodrome.
The later smaller version of the figure was made toward the end of the series’ first run and is probably rarer than the 11 inch one.

On a fairly unrelated note, here’s a disturbing Turtles movie for you to download for your viewing pleasure.

Anyone who does actually watch it, don’t give up on it til Krang has his scene.
By the way, it’s pornographic in a humorous way, so you have been warned.

my favorite part of the show—no wait, krang was the ONLY reason I watched the show. I had the original toy version of him with the little walker, but never the full body. I used to immitate his laugh to my little sister “blabba-blab-blab-blab” or something like that.
my all time favorite scene with krang, the one I still laugh about with my sister to this day, was the episode where krang got a giant spider-tank-blow-shit-up machine for his body and was attacking the city. then the turtles messed it up and krang yells “Time to bail out!” so this spring under his chair just sends him flying about two hundred feet.
Thankfully, Shredder drives up and sees our favorite brain about to splat on the sidewalk as gravity catches up with him. Shredder shouts to the android body (who seems to have some autonomy without krang inside) “CATCH HIM YOU FOOL!!!” and somehow that android made a football catch of krang and sticks him right into his stomach with a cute “splat” sound.
fantastic TV moment. I’ve been shouting “Catch him you fool!” to my little sister at least once a year since.
