02/22/2004: New Article: CROSSFIRE!

Monday starts early with the latest article, a tribute to Milton Bradley's "Crossfire."  It's the game where two opponents vie for the championship by loading, aiming and firing endless rounds of marble bullets at two weird pucks.  Plays better than it sounds, believe me.  I've also included a download for the old commercial, which had a jingle that's probably a hundred times more remembered than the actual game.  By the way, they still sell Crossfire, so even if you haven't thought about it in ten years, it's still out there, waiting for you.

I guess that birthday wishlist really paid off. I remember my cousins having this game. They also had a little kitten that they put on the game board, and fired at its little feet.  I laughed nervously because they were older than me and I was too much of a pussy to save the cat.

…Sorry cat.

I loved that song in the ad "crossfire crossfire you'll get caught up in the crossfire". I think they still show a crossfire ad around Christmas time. A newer different verson.

Ahh yes, another great toy from the 80s that worked far better in the commercial than it ever did at home.

Fond memories.

I used to love this game!

Posted by KTK @ 02/22/2004 7:48 PM EST

Now THIS was a game I truly loved.  It never really required great skill or thought…. the person with the most trigger-happy finger and the slightly more accurate aim could win anytime.  Bravo for Crossfire!

Posted by Nachokhaki @ 02/22/2004 8:10 PM EST

I don't think I should ever own this game. My brother and I already have epic battles with Siege, mostly over who gets to use the cannon instead of the lame-ass crossbow, so I think one of us would end up with a weird alien triangle puck lodged in our eye.

Posted by Gabbylicious @ 02/22/2004 8:17 PM EST

I was just thinking about this game the other day….. probably one of the top five catchiest commercial songs I can think of.  I had no idea that they still made it, and I may have to possibly perhaps consider buying it maybe.

Posted by Kate @ 02/22/2004 8:20 PM EST

about the not-being-level thing, yeah, that was a terrible part of this game. i remember that my brother and i had crossfire and before we would even start shooting pellets at each other, the little alien things would start rolling in a certain direction toward the unfortunate sibling…who was usually me…

by the way, those are some great pictures you took…the little pucks looked like they were in some kind of shootout at sunset. dramatic.

Posted by ChaosTheory @ 02/22/2004 8:27 PM EST

Niiiice!
I haven't seen that game for awhile.

Nice to know they still make it.

i always wanted that curly haired kid to lose. I hated him!

Posted by LCM @ 02/22/2004 8:40 PM EST

Never had this one, but I did own another "battle game."  Who remembers `Crossbows and Catapults'?  If the game wasn't going your way you could always employ mom's ashtray and scatter castle parts to the other end of the house and leave a nasty welt on your brother's forehead.

Yeah, what a great game. My friend got one for Christmas when it first came out. We played it a few times and it lead to heated arguments like "You had more marbles than me!" and stuipd stuff like that. But we ended up destroying the thing and trying to put the marbles in gasoline then light them on fire and shoot them at eachother. Lets just say, we werent aloud to play at eachothers houses for a while, and were bannished to the outside.
haha

I still have mine.  I'm going to go play it now.

…Yes, by myself.

This is probably one of the few board games my family never owned. In fact, Mom point blank said, despite persistant begging, that she refused to buy this game. Her excuse was that it encouraged violence (and she's right, but who cares?), but I think she was just afraid she'd end up stepping on and picking up the little balls all over the house (and, come to think of it, she was probably right about that too - must be a mother thing).

Incidentally, I also fondly recall the commercials and can still sing that heart-pounding, adrenaline-rushing jingle ("Crossfire! Don't get caught in the…CROSSFIRE!!").

Posted by starwenn @ 02/22/2004 9:49 PM EST

I think I played this game once while babysitting years ago. Being the (much) older player, I hauled ass and shattered a child's confidence. Go me!

BTW, I'll be the first dick to point out that the article is dated incorrectly. Go me x2!

Posted by God Animagnus @ 02/22/2004 9:54 PM EST

I loved that commercial, but now that I watch it, I have to wonder what the circumstances were.  I mean, I think we're all in agreement that the kid with the greasy slicked-back black hair is decisively evil, but still, he spins into some sort of oblivion in the end.  Maybe he just got stuck on the side that slid downhill.  I kind of feel sorry for him now.  But the people in the bleachers surrounded by fire seemed to be pretty happy about his loss.  Is this the way we'll settle arguments in the future?  By playing Crossfire?  I hope not, because my aim's horrible in this game.

Posted by Darth Monkey @ 02/22/2004 10:15 PM EST

Matt, you don't like Mousetrap?  After all, "The fun's in catching…Mousetrap!"

Posted by TOP1214 @ 02/22/2004 10:22 PM EST

I don't know. To me the game looks like a dark wizard took "Hungry Hungry Hippos", "Turn the Terrible Tank" and "Beyblade" and used that same merging spell New Skeletor used on new Two Bad in the New MOTU.

As for playing a game like this by yourself, some would say that makes you look lonely. I say it's the best way to make sure you win! :D

Posted by ShadowWing the Technorganic Autobot @ 02/22/2004 10:27 PM EST

i truly miss that game, and too cheap to buy it. eh, i guess i'll just have to settle for watching the commercial and reading matt's review. =*(

Posted by nelson from www.safetylamp.net @ 02/22/2004 10:49 PM EST

Matt - remember the "Three-In One Tournament Table" that was pimped in the early-90's?

The commercial had the 2 kids in the basement playing billiards, then the mom shouted down "Time for lunch!" and the kids changed it into a ping-pong table, then mom shouted "Dinner's ready!" and they started playing glow-in-the dark air-hockey.

I wanted one of those so bad.

Posted by Chris @ 02/22/2004 11:09 PM EST

Well, I only played like one game of Crossfire in my entire life, but I knew it was still in production courtesy of Matt's Amazon Wish List. As for Mousetrap, I never played a game of it ever. I would just set up the board and then set off the mousetrap. Good fun.

Posted by Rood @ 02/22/2004 11:12 PM EST

I had the early 90's version of Crossfire as well. However, mine had metal rails on either side of the goal(?) rather than plastic. Also, mine was sloped with a slight spine, meaning the middle of the board was higher than either side to keep the balls from gathering in the center.

The real trick to this game is getting your one handed re-load down. Being able to aim and reload at the same time is a must.

And I had this one friend that would play for about one minute, than stop shooting. He then would sandbag and collect my ammo, then destroy me. I fell for it every time.

Good times!

DAMN YOU X-ENTERTAINMENT!  MY APT. FEELS EMPTY NOW WITHOUT CROSSFIRE!  This theme song, and that damn Water-Pets theme song that no one else remembers as even existing, are the two theme songs I still find myself humming or singing in my head, even today at the ripe old age of 19.  Now I have to go home and hunt through my attic for my game or blow a 20 on the current version.  I must have been one of the lucky ones, cause my board had a perfectly level playing field that brought me and my brother hours of entertainment and years of bitter hatred.  Ah, memories.

Posted by The End Of J @ 02/23/2004 1:06 AM EST

I'm a little disappointed that you didn't use the original Crossfire commercial. Crossfire was one of those games I constantly wanted but my mom would never ever get for me.

She's the reason I'm so bitter.

Posted by Kev @ 02/23/2004 1:09 AM EST

should have done something about the crossfire commercial. cmon, the kids riding in on those pucks! maybe another day, good stuff though. i really should buy that game but no one wants to play with me.

Posted by Sideburnedhamster @ 02/23/2004 1:54 AM EST

Grrr…..the water pets commercial! I remember that clamp trap! I don't know what the hell they are but…

"water pets water pets love getting water wet…"

I'll never get that out of my head now….And I always got pissed off, because water was already wet.

Posted by David Logan @ 02/23/2004 2:05 AM EST

ummm…Clamp should be clap. Guess I have MOTU On the brain again. Speaking of which, I hope EVERYONE has, or will now sign the petition to keep it around. Matt rocks for mentioning it on the site.

Posted by David Logan @ 02/23/2004 2:06 AM EST

There was a longer version of that commercial, wasn't there? I thought I remembered the winner shouting "Yeah!" at least twice. I never liked that kid. Also, up until now I never knew what the second line in that damn song was. For some reason I always thought it sounded something like "You can count a finger!". Yea, I must have been pretty retarded 10 years ago.

Posted by MG @ 02/23/2004 2:33 AM EST

I owned this bad boy probably the first or second year it came out, as those stupid jackets and gloves the kids were wearing were STILL in-style.  Man, I schooled my younger brother so bad, even though he had no idea what the game was about.  That didn't matter.  He got caught up in tha Crossfire!

Posted by Armagideon Time @ 02/23/2004 3:04 AM EST

I also had this game when I was younger.  Even when there was no one to play with, you still can play, all I did was inclined the board.  Man, I had great fun with that game.

Posted by Liquidduck @ 02/23/2004 3:59 AM EST

So ShadowWing, you don't like Crossfire? TWO-BAD!
Eeeha ha ha ha hahahaaaaa!

God, that's the funniest line in the new MOTU… I'm going to curse you forever for the sake of a punchline. Awesome.

Anyhow, I didn't know what the second line really was until reading this article. I thought it went "Crossfire, you'll get caught up enough… Crossfiyah!" You know, like you'll get caught up in it, sho' nuff. Well, at least I wasn't counting on a finger.

Where can I buy this game? And is one of the mutant pucks worth more points than the other?

Posted by Deathfrogurt @ 02/23/2004 5:14 AM EST

Man, we called this game the equalizer. Since none of my friends had this game, we had to hang out at one of the nerdy kids houses to play… and yes he did have the holy grail, mecca like level playing field. I still remember spending sundays at his house, getting yelled at for swearing and smoking in the back yard…. still it was crossfire.

Posted by Toxikfoxx @ 02/23/2004 8:26 AM EST

I just came up with an awsome idea while reading the article.  I want to take my old Crossfire game and my old Turn the Terrible Tank game, and meld them into one Super Battlefield game where you have to shoot the pucks and stop the tank from destroying your base.  Complete mayhem.
incedently, ShadowWing gave me the idea to add Hungrey Hungrey Hippos, so you have to actually work to aquire your ammo.  I just think the pastel colored hippos will take away from the battlescene, so I will have to paint them all silver and add wires to make Cyber-Hippos.

Yeah.

And Crossbows and Catapults rules!

Posted by Stilewalker @ 02/23/2004 9:15 AM EST

Oh man!!  You had to mention the Water Pets song…  Now it's stuck in my head…  AARGHHH…  My bro and I played CROSSFIRE!! all the time…  He was a sandbagger…  Blast him…  *runs to Toys B' Us*

Awesome review Matt. My best friend had this game growing up and we thought it was the shit. He won most of the time, but ironically nowadays, he complains that his dick is only 4.5" long. I'm serious.

I guess I won in the end since mine is 5". "You gotta win it in the crossfire…Crossfire!"

Can you imagine a hyperactive ADD single child with cross fire? I must have learned to play millions of board games by myself. Other games I need to see reviews for are FIREBALL ISLAND and TORPEDO RUN.
I must have had one the "level" cross fire boards the 2 times I owned one. Never had a problem. I used to even do freakin tests with my board by letting two marbles run from the center of the board to each end and they pretty much tied.

Posted by Bloodcat @ 02/23/2004 12:17 PM EST

in the late eighties, i found in my garage a copy of crossfire that was quite different from the early 90's version. no fiery graphics; this thing looked like a 70's air hockey table with green and yellow colour scheme.  the pucks were not star and triangle shaped, but were just perfectly round.  no bumpers, and the board was of a sturdier material that probably was less likely to be unbalanced.  how did this strange game arrive in my garage? i was too young to have purchased it when it originally came out…that sure was a good game, wish i still had a copy of the old school version…

Posted by Michael @ 02/23/2004 12:32 PM EST

Hm… I was just playing Crossfire yesterday. Sadly, we only have 16 marbles now, and only the star-shaped puck piece. Still, the game lasted a good twenty minutes. It's really intense with one piece.

Posted by Tadashi @ 02/23/2004 12:40 PM EST

I never owned the game, but I've somehow come into the possesson of the six-pointed puck.  Sometimes, I shoot at it with a TMNT marble shooter until I either run out of marbles (I need to buy one of those big bags of a million marbles for a buck), or it falls off the table.  I like the memories of going to the nerdy kid's place and getting thrown out.  Reminds me of the Toy Fare editorial about the Superman Spinball Pinball where someone got torked about his place in line and chucked the pointed spinball at another kid, resulting in severe "bannination" for all.  When that kind of thing happens, you know it is a game to be envied.

Posted by kingklash @ 02/23/2004 12:49 PM EST

thank you so much for writing this review. i remember seeing the spots for it on tv loooong ago. the way the kid pumped his fist in victory at the end of the commercial was just priceless. i was thinking that this game was prime material for this site, glad to see that its here now!

I could've sworn that the lyrics to the theme song were just "You gotta firefirefirefirefirefire CAH-RA-HOSS FIE-AHHHHHH" over wicked-bad-nasty guitar riffs. But maybe I'm a chode. I never really had any, ya know, friends growing up, so I used to set my M.U.S.C.L.E. Men up on this and shoot their mutated selves. "EAT BERRING TERRI-BULL!"

I don't know about anyone else, but in my house we reference the Crossfire commercials all the time, to this very day. I can't tell you how many times my sister and I have howled "Croooosssfiiiiiiiiiiyah!" and then followed it up with the deadpan "You'll get caught up in it!"
By the way, thanks a lot, The End Of J, for bringing up that damnable "Water Pets" jingle. I'll never get rid of that earworm.

Anyone here ever play Fireball Island?

Posted by Malfuriouspete @ 02/23/2004 3:57 PM EST

I never played crossfire, but I had this game that was one better. Essentially it was a smaller variation on air hockey where each player had a slider attached to the rink blocking a goal. Pretty standard, but the hook to this game was the puck launcher that launched a metal puck that you put into a winder and shot out that was spinning at least 60,000 RPM (no kidding). The metal puck shot around the arena at a superhigh speed until it stopped or you got a goal which consisted of the puck going in, spinning furiously for a couple seconds, and you covering your face in case it suddenly hit an angle to go airborne.

Coolest game ever…I destroyed three bad GI Joes with it.

i still have it somewhere, but im sure all the balls are missing.  i remember the few minutes those games lasted.  it was a great game to cheat at, since you could always pick up the board w/ the pistol for a split second and no one would notice but it would give you a decided advantage.  in case you forgot…

WHOS GOING TO BUY ME?

Posted by monkeymonkfish @ 02/23/2004 4:34 PM EST

I wanted that hockey game!  I wanted to rev up the puck as fast as humanly possible and see if it could do damage to the board.  Imagine if you could spin the pucks in Crossfire like that!  AND shoot the ball bearings at them.  And add Hooters girls to the mix.  And everything was covered in hot fudge and/or 24 carat gold.

Posted by kingklash @ 02/23/2004 4:39 PM EST

Oh man. This harkens back to the day when ball bearings seemed to be one of the marks of a kid who knew their science. That seems like an odd scentence, but whatever kid had actual ball bearings to work with for their science fair project was an atlas of science. And best yet, after dismantling the project the ball bearings were left over to play with.

Getting hit by a ball bearing hurts way more than getting hit by a 2' rubber ball (aka: the world ball). Getting hit by each in the same day was the first time I learned about distribution of energy through surface area via direct example.

Of course, back then a kid could believe that paint was the ultimate adhesive. Childhood indeed is a time for wacky theories and misusing the mighty ball bearing.

The star-shaped puck just reminds me of a Beyblade, or maybe it's the arena vibe.

New Skeletor is my favorite take on the character. He's the best of Old Skeletor and Skeletor 2 (from New Adventures of He-Man) wrapped up with the spirit of Mark Hamil's Joker.

News from the Dunkaroo's front: The store I work at stopped selling them maybe three years ago, so they actually might be gone now. Then again, we don't sell Cookie Crisp, so that's not official.

You know what, you're right. He DOES give me Hamill Joker vibes.

I'll never forget when they introduced Stinkor. My brother-in-law said they should just call him Fartmonkey. I replied by doing a dead on Skeletor impersenation: "Perhaps I should have called you FARTMONKEY!!!"

Man I loved to get caught up in the crossfire!  Except i dont remember sweating as much as the kids in the commercial did…  And there was a lot less lightning.  Also, i think i lucked out on the board. Mine wasnt off level at all.

And after i lost the pucks i just used the board as a execution ground for mu action figures.  one ball bearing in the back of the head would dispatch any unloyal GI Joe.

Crossfire is still available, but I've noticed here (southern Ohio) that it's harder to find than most board games.  Big K-Marts seem to be the most easiest place to score one.  I remember in the early 90's sometimes we'd put our Hasbro WWF figures of G.I. Joes standing on the board, and shoot them as well as the pucks.  And that commerical rules times tin.

matt, great article once again, but a little complaint from those of us Mac users in the world… ocassionally, the downloads don't work properly. I don't know why sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, but, for example, i can't play the crossfire or string cheese commercials, but i had no problem with the Macy's Day Parade videos.
I don't know if you can do anything about it, but thought i'd let you know.

Anyway, great article again. I never had crossfire, but i had the other violent marble game, and broke many a green head playing it: Hungry Hungry Hippos.

Dude, thats freakin hilarious, i used to play this game with my cousin and older brother,(both 6 yrs older than i). I always had the slanted downward side, so i only won once, and that one time i did win, i got my ass pounded with a lawn chair. good to know they still make it.

I was @ the local comics shop here & they had a complete crossfire box in a bag that said, "complete". As if It's so precious that it needs to be in a giant dust-free bag. And The Cobra-Battle Game is next to it in some yellowed box decrapitating (my word) for the past 3 months. I'd buy it if it had its own bag that said, "complete" but it's just not worth the $14.99 for a game minus a missile. I didn't buy Crossfire, either. I ended up paying 30 bucks for a Captain Power Fortress. w00t

It's a shame that the clip isn't the version with the kid saying "Yeah!" twice that I remember seeing ten-thousand times a day over a course of ten-thousand years.

If you thought water pets were annoying what about rub-a-dub doggy?  I know these have probably been out for a while but at the CVS where my brother works they have NEW garbage pail kids.  Yup, more kids barfing with snot hanging out of their nose.  I never really understood how some of these characters were allowed on stickers intended for children.  Is the only stipulation that as long as there is no blood its ok?  I saw one of the new GPKs and he was throwing up all of his internal organs…but no blood.  Another features a dismembered GPK being puked out of a shark.  In today's politically  correct and overly sensitive society I'm suprised Topps even considered re-releasing the garbage pail kids. Til then let the vomit and snot flow like water.

I literally squealed when I say this listed on the front page. Singing the song from the Crossfire commercial used to be an integral part of my seven year old daily schedule. I heart Crossfire.

I, too, greatly enjoyed this game as a child.

As for the problems with uneven boards, it might be possible to fix it with a carpenter's level and some cardboard or something for shims. Has anyone thought to try that?

Yes! once again Matt attacks full throttle.  Now I gotta get my filthy mitts on some CROSSFIIIIIIIRRREE action!

Sweat Heavens!  They've ruined another classic just to save a few lives.  The classic version of "Crossfire" didn't have those wimpy plastic railings on both sides of the goals.  I surmise the only reason the modern version has them is to prevent little fingers from looking like they had just been shoved in a blender after a regulation game.  Geez… half the fun of the original Crossfire was aiming at your accursed opponents fingers as they struggled to reload, hopefully incapacitating them with pain so they didn't realize you were blowing on the pucks to make it seem that the board wasn't level, when in actuality it was.  Mwah hah… I also used to take the slightly larger ball bearings from one of my other games that was visually indistinguishable from the standard issue metal balls, but would clog the gun, and insure an easy victory.  In fact, the only way to get such an over-sized sphere out from the dispenser was to flip the entire board over, making a deathtrap of strewn marbles on the floor, which was a helpful strategy if I accidentally drew the larger ball.  Oh good times, back when games could scar your body *as well as* your mind…

DUDE!!!!! THAT CROSSFIRE SONG'S BEEN STUCK IN MY HEAD SINCE I FIRST SAW THE COMMERCIAL LIKE…& YEARS AGO!!!!

Oh man I remember this game back in the good ol'days. I was never really interested in it thought (mainly because I had a SNES and I didnt really like board games too much anymore).
I remember some other board games from that era of time, like 13 Dead End Drive (sponsord by YTV like every 2 seconds) The Forbidden game where you had to make your adventurer cross the bridge and the huge ass stone guy would shake the bridge and you would fall to your doom and die a thousand deaths and finally a game that was inspired by abusive/alchohalic fathers world-wide…Don't Wake Daddy. Quite honeslty the most realistic board game EVER MADE.

I LOVED this game when I was little.  I remember when my sister and I would play it, the loser had to "spin" oughta the room like that poor kid who lost in the commercial. God, we were stupid.

Since my junior high school was cheap, we had this game. In 98'. Everytime it rained, we rushed to get this game. It ruled.

Good God, I still have "You'll get caught up in the… CROSSFIRE!" seared into my mind from watching too much nickelodian as a kid, they ran ads for it all the time. I played it once. Air hockey's cooler.

Our entire staff would like to thank you for hosting the commerical.  Laughed ’til we cried.

I remember that commercial. To this day it lingers in the back of my mind and emerges every so often, leaving me helpless and yelling CROSSFIYAAAAAAAAAAH!!! HUH!!! Children and adults alike would crap their pants when that commercial suddenly (not to mention violently) exploded onto their television sets. It was, and still is, the BEST…COMMERCIAL…EVER. How can you say no to insane, hover board riding, kids in Road Warrior Jr leather suits maliciously attacking each other with an onslaught of endless marbles? There is no way my friend. You either buy the game immediately… or you die.

I played the 70s version of this, like an earlier poster mentioned. The board was almost three feet long. What noone's talked about, and maybe it wasn't a problem with the 90s version, was the literal bloodbath involved from blistered fingers. You would recognise other Crossfire players in the streets by the calloused and scarred state of their trigger finger. The puck was round, again as previously mentioned, so matches were gruelling in light of the longer board. And after getting beaten? The guns just lifted right off the board and could be turned on the winner. Nice.

hey does anybody know who did the song for crossfire?  like…they have an album or something?

I just felt like hearing that old song again… and seeing that little kid in the leather jacket with the fire and lightning in the background… I wonder where that kid is today…

Hey, does anyone know of any customized crossfire boards? My friends and i want to deck ours out and turn it into a full auto loader and make it sweet, then we'd have the best drinking game ever…

Hey! Does anyone know where I can buy a Crossfire game? They don't carry it in any of the stores in my area and I have searched endlessly online and can't find it. I would like to buy it as a present for someone, their birthday is Feb. 11. Let me know! Thanks!

We lost the bag with the metal marbles to our Crossfire game.  Hasbro has discontinued the game - does anyone know the size of the marbles?  I was thinking that Pachinko balls (11mm) might work instead.

I attended the New York toy fair in Feb and was so happy to see that one of my child hood favourite toys was being relaunched. For those that remember Crossbows and Catalpults will be pleased to know that it is to be relaunched under the name "Battleground" in Fall 2007.
