02/02/2004: Strange Freakin Request.

Heyyyy. I have an odd request. A few of you mentioned something about Hostess’ “Tiger Tails” still being available. These seem to be much rarer than the Choco-Diles. If anyone has access, I’d love to get my hands on a few boxes for another upcoming Hostess article. Shoot me an e-mail if you’ve got the goods, and we’ll work something out.

Also, here’s a little thing I wrote for UGO a while back, though it was just published today. My mission was to choose my eleven most-wanted gadgets from movies, and in an attempt to be as honest as possible, I filled it up with Bathroom Buddies and almanacs. Click here to seeee it, baby, seeee it baby.

Excuse me, but the hell!?! You chose the Sports Almanac over the Hoverboard!?!

i tried looking them up but they seem to be a mystery everywhere

Awesome list! Heheheh loved your commentary on the bathroom buddy. heh breakdancing hellspawn indeed.

I always wanted a speeder bike too. Probably because I had a bad habit of hitting curbs with my regular old 2 wheeled doom cycle. I am amazed I never got seriously hurt from the number of times I went over the handlebars. This in the days before every kid wore helmets.

I had two entries from Star Wars, didn’t want to repeat the process for BTTF even despite the cool hoverboards. And yes, I’d take Grays… Sports… Almanac over a hoverboard any day of the week.

Yeah, HTF lists it as discontinued, but I can definitely confirm that they still exist. I’ve found one online retailer that has them, but they’re unfortunately sold in forty dollar chunks. Don’t want to spend another mint on Hostess. :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 02/02/2004 10:21 PM EST

Can’t help you on the Hostess, Matt. I never heard of Chocodiles before I started reading this site reguarly, much less Tiger Tails.

Ahh, I have fond memories of "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." That was the first movie my sisters, a friend, and I saw without adults in tow. We saw the second that same summmer – "Ghostbusters II." We always figured the proton packs would come in handy. We grew up in Cape May, one of the oldest towns in the US, and certainly one with a lot of spooks, spirits, and weird shit running around. Looking for ghosts was one of our favorite things to do on a dark, spooky night.

My brother had a reletively realistic-looking plastic lightsaber. I say "reletively," because I don’t remember them being that BIG. The "lightsaber" was a huge, thick piece of gray and green plastic that could extend to the size of your average four-year-old. When my brother first got it, it was bigger than he was. Come to think of it, he has a speeder bike toy for his action figures, too. Press a button and it comes apart, like it did in the movie.

ALL HAIL GLASS MOOSE MUGS!!! From the 1st time I saw Christmas Vacation as a youngin’ I’ve been dreaming about owning a set of those god like moose mugs.

We’d sit around a roaring fire, roasting chestnutS and s’more, sipping heavily boozed egg nog we would.

WE WOULD I SAY!!! ALL HAIL GLASS MOOSE MUGS!!!

Hmmm…dunno what to tell you, Matt. Do you have a Hostess shop nearby? We’ve got one — I could give them a call for you and see if they’ve got Tiger Tails. Tomorrow, when they’re open again.

Still waiting to hear about your KB finds, btw — I crossed two state lines traveling to closing KBs and now fully understand why so many KBs are closing. Their prices are too damned high! Seriously, on the stuff I would’ve bought, even their closeout sale prices were higher than Walmart’s regulars. And Suncoast was having an insane sale on toys to boot… really made KB look bad, even in defeat. I walked with a $7 Turtle Van Battle Shell… seriously.

But then, I already knew that — back when I worked at KB I used to refer people to the nearby Toys ‘R’ Us, since their prices were much lower than ours. Usually the people appreciated my altruism so much that they bought something from me anyway. :)

They have them in Kirkland, Washington. Search for the nearest bakery.

Ghosted by Mathew @ 02/02/2004 11:32 PM EST

Good choice on the bathroom budy, but what about the smokeless ashtray?

Ghosted by Bright Noah @ 02/03/2004 12:05 PM EST

Tiger Tails? God, I thought those things were gross. Neon orange HoHo’s.

I haven’t seen them in quite a while, but for some reason I know the guys at http://www.penny-arcade.com loved them.

Man, I need to get out more…

Ghosted by Rayzak @ 02/03/2004 1:13 AM EST

I gotta say a hoverboard would suck if you couldn’t use a skateboard. Like me. I have never been very coordinated. Except I could play sports for some reason. I just flipped over the bars of my bike a lot and couldn’t skateboard no matter how hard I tried. I could roller skate though. Back in the days before roller blades. God I feel old.

You know it is going to be a long semester when on the first day of class the teacher spends 15 minutes at the start of class autographing her book for people in class…I didn’t buy a copy of her book. She gave one to my roommate for free (my roommate is her assistant) so I read that copy. :P to my teacher.

Ghosted by Killer Duck @ 02/03/2004 2:15 AM EST

I coulda sworn that I’ve seen reasonably priced moose mugs before. It was probably at the Christmas Tree Shop or maybe that Christmas store at the mall that only opens in December.

If I ever run across ‘em, I’ll post it here, and definately pick up a set for meself.

Ghosted by Tony @ 02/03/2004 2:17 AM EST

Matt already wanted a speeder bike. I’d be happy with a speeder bike and a hoverboard, but a speeder bike alone is quite cool by itself.

Speaking of lightsabers, I have a vague memory of toy lightsabers from around the time of Return of the Jedi that made cool sounds when you waved them around. It was some sort of physical effect, not something electronic. Anyone else remember that, or is it just me?

Ghosted by marioshoku @ 02/03/2004 2:29 AM EST

tron clothes…awesome choice…

Ghosted by heeloyd @ 02/03/2004 2:59 AM EST

Marioshku, you’re not imagining things. I remember them too :)

Ghosted by Killer Duck @ 02/03/2004 3:02 AM EST

My eyes are burning. That means bedtime. I don’t want a speeder bike, I don’t like fast speeds, I get in trouble, like that time when I went over a cliff/hill hybrid on a dirtbike. My personal pick would be an ectosuit, a pink one. With twin lightsabres, also pink. Then I would tranform into a pink fighter jet. I like pink.

Ghosted by Gabbylicious @ 02/03/2004 3:30 AM EST

The Exo-suit would be sweet, but the suit in Aliens pwns it all to hell..

If it could transform instead of just being a walking foklift it’d be that much cooler!

wait one minute. on the one list it says tiger tails are strawberry twinkies. if thats so i know for a fact i can get a product identical but not hostess at my local grocer

Ghosted by the corinthian @ 02/03/2004 4:40 AM EST

I actually considered buying some Tiger Tails twice over the weekend, but decided on Zingers and Snowballs, respectively. It’s funny you should bring them up, I see them all the time.

I realize I am alone in this but I have always wanted the Cosmic Key. It was the only cool thing from the He-Man movie:

Unfortunately Mattel did not produce the prototype:

Someone has stolen my name…That faker above? He ain’t me. I’m the Paul that’s been here for months.

That said…what the heck is a Tiger Tail? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these…

Ghosted by The ORIGINAL Paul @ 02/03/2004 8:42 AM EST

I would love a light saber. I don’t want the almanac, though. It is from 1950-2000. I don’t think I can win much money betting on old games.

Great choices, Matt. BTW, I am designing a Proton Pack. Maybe it will be done in a couple of years.

Ghosted by Stilewalker @ 02/03/2004 9:22 AM EST

A preliminary search of Yahoo! Canada brought up this page:

http://www.cache.k12.ut.us/HTMLfiles/WVMS/office/cafe.html

Willow Valley Middle School offers Tiger Tails among their Hostess products as a ‘government approved’ snack…right along with cookies n cream milkshakes and Twix bars…geez, no wonder kids are getting fatter.

I woulda added the amp that went to 11. But that’s cause I play guitar. Good top 11 though. How come you say the blog has taken off in recent weeks? Has the number of hits increased, or the number of posts?

Ghosted by chad @ 02/03/2004 9:52 AM EST

Yeah, wasn’t speaking from a webmassa success standpoint, but rather the conversations found in the comments sections, which sometimes are going over 200 a piece. With a comparatively low number of crap comments, too! :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 02/03/2004 9:56 AM EST

If I could have a Johnny 5, I would be so freaking popular. It would be such a great chick magnet. I could point to a girl and make him go up to her and say, "Stephanie beautiful." Oh, and I guess I would have to hope her name was Stephanie.

I didn’t notice the high amount of comments, but the "quality" of comments is getting better. A lot of people are regulars now… and to top everything off the first poster didn’t say "FIRST POST WHOOOO" so we are moving in the right direction.

Is a user profile still in the works for the blog, or is that kinda on the back burner?

Ghosted by chad @ 02/03/2004 10:33 AM EST

It’s not really on the back burner so much as me not having figured out how to get it done. I have every faith that it will get done, though. I have a larger project that involves coding coming up in a bit, and if I can’t figure it out by then, the person doing the coding surely can. And then he will bill me. :)

If my calculations are correct….J-5 should be merrily on his way.

I always wanted a speeder bike too. We used to pretend the two person swing on our swing set was one.

Ghosted by Spiffy McKracken @ 02/03/2004 10:56 AM EST

I think you’re all missing out on the critical element here- WHERE’S THE DAMN HOVER STUFF? Transformers: The Movie showed us jet-powered hoverboards by 2005… y’know, next year. And even without the bigass-robot-technology advance, Back to the Future 2 promised us that we’d have flying cars and skateboards by 2015. (Not to mention about 20 more Jaws movies, so they better get cracking on those.) What the shit?!? That’s only 11 years away; are we gonna be ready in time? ‘Cuz if I can’t throw the trash from my 34th birthday into Mr. Fusion, I’m gonna be pissed…

Ghosted by The Lucky One @ 02/03/2004 11:27 AM EST

Wtf?
I think I’m a little early huh?

Little Brother had one of those hard plastic lightsabers. We were living on the left coast at the time and he got it at a store called Starbase Central. Before too long, I had taken it apart and figured out how it made its sound, and had it back together. It was a kind of a low-pitched whistle. whooo-oooo! I loved the old inflatable blade lightsabers we used to bap each other upside the head with. I always wanted the AutoBot Matrix. Or Crow T. Robot.

Ghosted by kingklash @ 02/03/2004 12:37 PM EST

The AutoBot Matrix was pretty, I’d want a little one as a necklace.

Ghosted by Gabbylicious @ 02/03/2004 12:42 PM EST

Yes kingklash, I know exactly what you mean about having Crow T. Robot. I actually spent 3 years collecting all of the authentic parts for Tom Servo and have had him finished for about 5 years now. I have about half of the Crow parts so far.

Ghosted by alienmagic @ 02/03/2004 12:46 PM EST

does the larger coding project happen to involve re-instating the archives? I hope so.

Ghosted by chad @ 02/03/2004 1:27 PM EST

I heard of MST sites that help you with finding those hard-to-get Tupperware pieces for Crow. If any one comes thru my part of the state and wants to check out some haunted territory, (I’m looking in your direction, Duck) I can point them to a couple of places to start. One is even near a tourist attraction! Of course, you might want to keep your Proton-Accelerator out of sight, at first. Tee-hee, poltergeists are noisy!

Ghosted by kingklash @ 02/03/2004 1:33 PM EST

Those Ghostbuster figures look awesome, but they better make some of the Ghostbusters them selves and an Ecto-1 vehicle.
