01/27/2004: “Battle of the Rock Lords,” and LIME COKE!

There wasn’t a new article to kick off the week yesterday, but I hope the fact that this one is 55,000 words makes up for it. Here’s my review of “The Battle of the Rock Lords,” a Go-Bots movie that introduces a whole new legion of rocky characters and long-tongued fur-covered dragon cuties. You’re probably associating that “Go-Bots” connection with crap, but it really wasn’t a bad little flick. I collected the Rock Lords toys, and this was the only way to see ‘em animated. Not sure if that was worth the full-blown 90 minute treatment, but whatever, I’m still glad it’s out there. Definitely worth picking up. And by the way…

This new Coke WID LIMA shit is fantastic. I got used to the phony lemon flavoring (actually prefer it over the original, non-fruitified version), but the lime is sooo much better. Way more natural. Besides, everyone loves limes. Admit it, you eat limes. Raw. You cut them in half and chomp on the skin, letting the heavenly acids flow forth like a river of sour. Now you can have that wonderful feeling and tack Coca Cola on top. Who could ask for anything more? I doubt it’ll be around forever — regular Coke, lemon Coke, lime Coke — something’s gotta give. Buy it while you can. Drink it while it’s lime.

There is already a Sailormoon live action series in Japan.

And phunqsauce thanks for reminding me about my lament for the lost pudding pop. They just don’t make them anymore. I yearn for the pudding pops we got in school lunches.

You know what I love about Japan? Everything. Not like I’ve ever been there, but the land of Engrish is a great place. I mean, they gave us Most Extreme Elimination Challenge, what more could we ask for? Guy LeDouche is my hero.

Mortimer the pen rawks! One of my childhood friends said he got it and that it made funny sounds like in the Picture Pages segments. Of course, I shoulda known better. This kid also told me to pack my bags one Friday after school, because I was going with him and his family that weekend to Disney World. My mother still likes to tell about me patiently waiting all evening with my packed bags. Sigh…

Before this article, I could only remember two things about watching the Go(-)Bots as a kid: 1) one of them was named Scooter; 2) he sounded like Urkel with a mouth full of marshmallows only less garbled. Still, I always have mad respect for the man who was the voice of Grimey.

Ghosted by Hecubus @ 01/28/2004 2:16 PM EST

And don’t forget the short-lived GELATIN POPS…But then again I’m sure Matt could dig some of those up at his local deli :)

oh yeah, if you enjoy silly broken english stuff from japan check out http://www.engrish.com

(1.) I need to show my fiance this thread so I can make her feel dumb for not knowing about picture pages.

(2.) Hell yeah we should throw an X-E convention. I work at a hotel in Niagara Falls, I can probably get a deal on the ballroom or something, or if not, my boss can probably get us something whereever we want to have it.

(3.) Dammit, now I want puddin pops. And the topic wouldn’t have come up if I didn’t bring up Bill Cosby in the first place. Damn me.

(4.) If there was an X-E convention, we could set up that "Nick Arcade" type game that I babbled about a bit on the board games thread.

(5.) The moral of this thread is that GoBots may not have sucked as much as some of us remember.

It’s all about Mortimer Ichabod Marker.

No, they sucked WORSE then i remember……

Ghosted by phunqsauce @ 01/28/2004 3:09 PM EST

You know what I found out last year when *I* was craving puddin’ pops? They are essentially just…frozen jell-o pudding. Seriously. You make up some of that instant stuff, freeze it in little molds or tupperware or whatever, and there ya go! Then you can make it in whatever flavor you want, or pour a little bit of each flavor into each mold and make it swirled! Mmmmm…

Whats the deal with this Bubba the Love Sponge fella? I just heard he was fined like $750k by the FCC…thats a lot of f-bombs. Since I gave up on radio a long itme ago someone fill me in…What exactly did he do?

Ghosted by phunqsauce @ 01/28/2004 3:23 PM EST

Two things:

1) Lime Diet Coke is evil because it’s replaced Vanilla DC in the cafeteria at my place of business. Vanilla was the only "diet" soda I’d drink, so now I’m gonna be fat AND IT’S ALL LIME’S FAULT!!!! Okay, not really, but I WILL have to hit the gym just that much more often. Bah. Damn you, lime!

2) I don’t know why, but I was confusing in my mind the Rock Lords with those Stone-Dar warriors or whatever from He-Man. Having read that article, though, I can now remember having had both the mohawked bad guy AND Nuggit. Now, aside from my shame at having owned TWO Rock Lords, I now have to devote my life to regaining a Nuggit figure, because that shiny gold is just too alluring for words. Double damn you, Matt!

Harvey Wallbangers are my favorite to drink. I suppose that those are not really soda pop, but they sure keep me warm on lonely nights with my room mate, Julia Ormond. I enjoy limes in my beverage from time to time as well.

My brother had a subscription to Picture Pages. They’d come in the mail so he could do them with Bill Cosby.

phunqsauce, you kick ass. Of course, now I’m going to have the theme from "Picture Page" stuck in my head all day. Matt, you should find some old Picture Page episodes and do a review. Speaking of, you never told me if the s5p team and I could do the review of VCR WrestleMania.

Ghosted by Skitzo from stupid5pin.com @ 01/28/2004 4:46 PM EST

my cousin had the picture pages stuff too. i would go to his house and watch him do them with cosby. we wanted his pen so bad!

Ghosted by heeloyd @ 01/28/2004 4:50 PM EST

I have a vhs tape of Picture Pages and it comes with the booklet to follow what Bill Cosby does with the whistling pen. I just e-mailed you about it Matt.

Ghosted by Michael @ 01/28/2004 5:12 PM EST

I liked the way the magic pen sounded. I used to try to get our markers at home to sound like that. Of course, they did not. Especially when writing on the walls.

Ever see the Office Depot ad where the guy giving a presentation is trying to write on a dry erase board with a dried-out marker? There’s your squeaky noises.

You know what would also be cool, having a page where X-E’ers could send in pics of themselves. would be cheaper than an airplane ticket, since I"m betting the convention won’t be in texas

Go-Bots never really became big when I was a kid. The storylines where just silly, and lets face it Transformers was just cooler with Megatron and Soundwave. Tho I alwas had someone that would get me a Go-Bot for xmas. The Rock Lords I remember them showing on Channel 11 or 5. By that time if I recall the 80’s toy craze was dieing down and the NES had come out and to us kids the NES was just cooler.

Leader-1 still lives on tho. He’s Megatrons Mini-Con on the new Transformers show on Cartoon Network.

I vote for an X-E convention! I live two blocks from the Wildwood Convention Center! Matt, remember the place you got the basket of Green Bamboo Peanuts from? It’s still there. The Psychic booth is still around. Fat Daddy’s on the other end of the Boardwalk, but he’s still there. Heck, the lady who he took the picture of giving him the licorace pipe was still working in the same candy store last summer. Dracula’s Castle is, sadly, not still there. It burned down two years ago. : 0 (

I remember Picture Pages. My sisters and I spent many a Sunday morning, summer morning, and mornings home sick watching "Pinwheel," with "Picture Pages" during the commerical breaks. It was such a fun concept, and the pen was too cute. I loved when it came to life and solved the puzzle before Bill came back.

Oooohhh…also meant to mention I’m a devoted Sailor Moon fan. I don’t have nearly the episodes I’d like to have (they’re kind of pricy on video), but I do own four fashion-type dolls (Neptune, Uranus, Moon, Chibi/Mini Moon) and one stuffed doll (Moon). Kay Bee’s been having big sales on their Sailor Moon toys, God bless them! I may look for the fashion dolls online, too. I think they’re too cool. I love how Neptune, Uranus, and Chibi/Mini Moon have such different faces. Chibi/Mini Moon’s eyes are more oval and detailed than her "mother"’s. Uranus’ eyes are narrower and almond-shaped. Neptune’s are somewhat similar, but larger and less narrow.

Has anyone seen the live-action show yet?

Diet coke with lime tastes like Coke and Sprite procreated. Then it got dieted. I have half a bottle sitting here by me because I had to buy it when I saw it.

Ghosted by Killer Duck @ 01/28/2004 10:56 PM EST

I’m about to open another can of worms with this one…I’m sure most of you learned your alphebet with those totally "grooooovy" letter people. I did a little research and found out that the letter people still exist today but they changed them!!! They have been raped of their psychadelic dignity. Most of the changes came about because of political correctness bullshit. How could you forget Mr. M with the munchy mouth? Or Mr. T’s taaalllll teeeth? What mostly kicked ass were the 70’s funky-fresh theme songs for those letter people. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find any mp3s out there but they must exist. Then again I’m sure the people who have the vynils don’t have the equipment to rip the songs. I don’t know if your school did this but at the end of the year we had a letter people parade. Each child dressed as their favorite letter person. Since my name is Kevin i naturally chose Mr. "kickin" K. I could just imagine a school full of kindergarteners dressed like 70’s throwback characters…..silliness!!

Starwenn, personally I am a Sailor Mars fan. I like how she is so bitchy, it amuses me. And she has cool hair, I wish mine was that long. I did dye it the same shade of purple though… and it looks cool! Normally I’d be embarrassed to share these things, but I know that half of you watch Pokemon (I know I know, I do too…)

i have come to light crystal light lemonade in the past month. for sugar free its pretty sweet and i prefer it over minute maid which was my old favorite. I also prefer sugar free candy over regular. cant believe how good this stuff really is. they have sugar free hershey’s, reeses, russell stover, anything you can imagine has a sugar free version. Even the "Atkin’s Endulge" chocolate bars are awesome.

Ive got a wrist brace on for a few days since i got some ulnar tunnel syndrome from going to a lan and using my mouse in a bad position for 3 days straight. (Ulnar tunnel syndrome is like Carpal tunnel syndrome but the pinky and ring finger are affected instead of the thumb and forefinger.) Thank you WebMD.com! XD

Total weight lost on atkins so far: 17lbs in 28 days. ^_^

I know that you can make pudding pops by freezing pudding but its just not the same. We even have the old tupperware molds for making popsicles. I want the school kind with the icy shell to bite through.

I’ve seen the first six of the live action Sailor Moon eps (look around the net; they’re not too hard to find) but had to stop getting them as eventually I just COULDN’T BLOODY TAKE IT ANYMORE. I used to like the dub, but man… the live action eps are the worst. That said, I’m probably going to review one of them on SC at some point… if I can sit through it again.

This comments section has really picked up in 2004, Matt! (Hasn’t it?) Ever think of going back to a full-blown forum?

Damn Wes!!! I didn’t know about the TMNT anime!! Those super turtles look freaky. Leave it to an anime to have them fuse into the saint turtle. Just when I think I’ve seen it all there’s always something there to sneak up and bite me in the ass…What’s next? Captain N the anime? Could you imagine Super King Hippo vs. Mega Simon Belmont? The fusions would be a site to see. Just think about it….Mother Brain, Eggplant Wizard, and King Hippo in one conglomoration? ewwwwwww…..

X-E convention? I dunno… I mean, I’m down with it and all (s’long as it’s located in the tri-state area), but what would really happen when you gather together than many loners, freaks, geeks, and iconoclasts? Would we be able to actually get along, or are we united solely by our love for Megatron and Jem and the Holograms? Questions for the ages…

Still, a photo page would be cool. As long as I don’t get made fun of for having only 3 piercings and normal-colored hair…

First, because, why not? Get my wishes in before it totally slips my old brain. Happy Birthday, Duck! Redeem this comment at a future time for a synchronistic event of your choice. Or a medium value meal at your neighborhood Burger Brawl. (value meal offer not valid on dimensional planes that have Zsa Zsa Gabor) I like the picture idea, make them into paper dolls, then Matt could have the X-E convention in his living room. He could lord over all the tiny poster children like a huge and slightly drunk god. And I wouldn’t have to worry about saying something stoopid and getting stomped flat by Duck.

Hahahaha King that is great. Matt having paper dolls of all of us. Oh the highjinks…

Ghosted by Gabbylicious @ 01/29/2004 12:43 PM EST

The paper dolls idea is great. Anybody see the episode of Kids in the Hall where the two latent homosexual highschool kids (Scott Thompson and Mark McKinney) who are way into Hollywood threw their own Hollywood bash? They took face shots of the stars, pasted them onto the bowls of spoons, and put the spoon handles inside empty beer bottles – creating pseudo-bobbleheads…and made them have conversations with each other. Even feigned Liza Minelli throwing up by tipping the remaining contents of the bottle onto the floor. Classic stuff.

Speaking of, whatever happened to M. Jackson’s chimp, Bubbles? Bubbles, we hardly knew thee.

lemon coke has been out in england for about a year. but we dont have lime yet. i think its funy that jon travolta has a vanilla coke in pulp fiction but the drink dsidnt arrive n uk until last year again. but i think vanilla coke tastes like old goat ass

Phunq, what memories…my aunt was a kindergarten teacher so I learned the letter people early. She’d play the records for us all the time :) My favorite was always Mr. S because, well, who wouldn’t want to have super socks? Have you checked eBay for the records?

Ghosted by Killer Duck @ 01/29/2004 3:20 PM EST

Jim’ll, vanilla coke has actually been around for a long time. Thing is it used to be made at soda fountains by the soda jerks (just love them soda jerks). Since the scene in Pulp Fiction was set in an old fashioned-nostalgia-type soda shop it makes sense that they’d serve old school drinks including vanilla and cherry coks made the old fashioned way.

king-thanks for the Happys…you’re 8 days late but I promise not to stomp you.

Speaking of people’s pictures, I have round one ready to put on my home site of "my imaginary photo album". I actually started it yesterday but it was sometrhing I had wanted to do for a while. So far I have Gabby, heeloyd, king, and Trajeal. More coming soon and I’ll post the link as soon as I can keep the computer from crashing long enough to get them up there.

Bubbles is gone. Sometimes when chimps reach adulthood they get cranky and violent and can’t remain domesticated. They had to send him to a preserve.
