New Article: POP QWIZ Colored Popcorn!

How many of you remember "Pop Qwiz?" Made in the early 90s, this ill-fated Pop Secret brand combined the familiar taste of buttered popcorn with wacky ass neon colors. If you wanted to eat red, blue, green or purple popcorn, you had to be a Pop Qwiz loyalist. The stuff seems to have been criminally short-lived. The world wasn't ready for pink popcorn, but that doesn't mean we can't reminisce. Review includes a download for what's probably the only Pop Qwiz commercial that ever existed. And Guessin' Ted, too! Click here to read it!

Ugh, I remember this stuff. I loved it absolutely to death. I can’t imagine how many boxes my brother and I went through as a child, but I have lamented the loss of this wonderful popcorn for years. Sure, I could go out and buy some NORMAL Pop Secret, but it just wouldn’t be the same. I couldn’t whip open a bag and amaze my less-endowed friends with my fancifully colored kernels of joy, nor could I partake of the quiz myself. I hope they bring it back soon, though, for all the children of this most recent generation. Surely, I would ignore my attmepts to be healthy and get the low fat kind if only they tempted me with *color.*

i remember that stuff…ahhh good times. then after it disappeared we tried to recreate it by dipping popcorn in red koolaid. not a good idea, dont try it. i say we get a petition going to bring it back. haha.

I absolutely LOVED this stuff as a child. I remember being totally depressed (well, as depressed as a pre-pubescent girl can get) when they stopped making it.

Everything else from my childhood is making a comeback. Why not Pop Qwiz?

I could of sworn i already psoted, but i don’t see my psot anywhere so i’m goign to psot it again.

I vividly remeber this stuff. It tasted like shit, but i bugged my mom to get it every week, because the novelty of colored popcorn prevailed my tastebuds.

Oh yeah matt i have a sugesstion. You should get a message board. These blog comments are fine and dandy but a message baord would get rid of most of the off topic comments, and having a registered name would be nice so noboy could just put in my name and pretend to be me.

I remember that the networks always aired those Pop Qwiz commercials at least twice during every break. I always thought that the nost (his name was Playtoh?!) looked a lot like a broke-down Vanilla Ice who, come to think of it, is sort of a "negative-image of M.C. Hammer. Man, those commercials were annoying!

We’ll see about adding a new message board in the future, but it definitely wouldn’t be for a while. On the upside, I’m working on an option for blog readers to register their nicks complete with a bio page and whatnot, hopefully soon.

Bring back Pop Qwiz! Won’t somebody think of the children?

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 01/16/2004 12:31 PM

If you do add a message baord take your time. new articles are more important than a message board.

I thought this popcorn had a different flavor to it like colored caramel corn but I must be thinking about something else…anyway, making something different just to appeal to kids is nothing new, I remember the graham crackers shaped like dinosaurs…or were they cookies? Oh well…anyway, I just thought the pop qwiz people would still be on the market today if they had gone all out on that first commercial and hired JD Roth. Yeah! My man JD! That would’ve added at least 2-3 months to the life span of this craptacular product.

By the way, John and Chad two real good funny posts in a row, I too have known the pain of eating a food I’ve begged for and now must suffer for my insolence and easily manipulated childish mind…I am of course referring to the cereal with the comic strips on it(Breakfast Funnies?), man I’m sure sure wringing out a dish cloth used to pick up spilled Cookie Crisp would taste better than this bile. Ah, memories!

And to think, I would have probably have gone the rest of my life without ever thinking of Pop Qwiz. But of course the second I see it’s the subject of Matt’s latest update all the memories instantly rush back. I remember the commercial well, but it seems like I only tried to stuff once. Or maybe never at all. Maybe I just thought I tried it cause I saw the commercial ten times a day. Oh well.

Oh boy… Pop Qwiz. Heavily advertised during "Chip n’ Dales Rescue Rangers" as I recall. In college during my ‘starving’ year I managed to swipe a giant box worth of the single vending machine packets from a store roomn and lets just say that I haven’t eaten much popcorn ever since…

I too was unfortunate enough to attempt to "recreate" the wonderful colors of pop qwiz popcorn went it fled the shelves of our local market. I may have been a bit less well attended to as a child however because I had ready access to food coloring dyes. MMMMMMM eating colored popcorn with hands, face, and clothing dyed is infinitely better than eating it while clean.

I do indeed remember this delightful treat! It was fuckin’ extra greasy as I recall, but it was a staple of my pantry. In fact I ate copious amounts of this stuff, drinking liters of Crystal Pepsi whilst watching TGIF and pulling muscles trying to do the Urkel dance.

Chestnuts roasted by JessieSpano @ 01/16/2004 1:30 PM

god i remember this stuff. like alot of other people who posted, mine always came out burnt.

Chestnuts roasted by winkle @ 01/16/2004 1:31 PM

Bright Noah, as the resident random link guy, I must protest Matt bringing back the message boards. X-E is pretty high up on Google searches. The more random the comments are here then the more random visitors you help bring in for X-E’s benefit, and hopefully the new visitors as well.

Like say, how many movies have Ninja in the title?
http://imdb.com/find?more=tt;nr=1;q=ninja

i also had some trouble with the whole burning deal. but one sweet memorable time i did succeed in not burning it…but it turned out to be yellow. it wasn’t as exciting as i thought it would be, so i threw the rest of the shit away. i was expecting to get something good and freaky, like purple, but no. the pop qwiz failed me. how disappointing.

Chestnuts roasted by macks @ 01/16/2004 1:38 PM

I think the host said that his name was Play-Doh or something similar at the very beginning. Plus, it wasn’t the host of the Barbershop who did the superkick. If anything, Ted would have had to superkick Mike through the plate glass window, to the horror and bad acting of Play-Doh, and leave with Kate as his manager who would then sing a crappy version of his theme song, only to be replaced on vocals by Ted himself, with the new song being Ted’s trademark for years to come. Duh.

COLONEL!

Chestnuts roasted by fasff @ 01/16/2004 3:00 PM

I think I had this stuff! I distinctly remember colored popcorn once, and unless there was another kind, then this was it, because I know it came in a box. (I’m going to pretend that it was…)
Yeah, it got "overcooked" a lot. Not necessarily burned, but it tasted a little burnt. Yuck. I think of it every so often, but nobody else I know remembers it.
I think that if they offered "Pop Qwiz" today (possibly under a different name), it would do rather well. You know, with the colored ketchup (or ‘catsup’, whatever), fries, etc. I guess kids love that stuff.

Chestnuts roasted by Rainbowfeet @ 01/16/2004 3:07 PM

Oaul, dammit, I ended up with Dr. Pepper on my screen from the trips comment :) God knows it’s true too. God and JR.
I like randomness. Random is good. I also like the idea of being able to register my name. My biggest fear is that someone will jump register it before me. Then I will have to seek them out and sic kingklash on them.
Pop Qwiz tasted like dye flavored popcorn. Crystal Pepsi tasted like um…not Pepsi. Remember the crystal gravy commercial parody on SNL? That was funny sheit, that.

Chestnuts roasted by Killer Duck @ 01/16/2004 3:09 PM

I remember this popcorn. I used to eat it all the time, and I was sad that the store no longer had it. But I was content with non-colored popcorn afterwards.

Chestnuts roasted by JG! @ 01/16/2004 3:30 PM

Me, I don’t think adding a message board will hinder random people comming to the site. Many times when I’m searching for obscure things on google theonly links i get are mb threads. and besides how many other sites have articles on pop qwiz? With just this one article matt probably has the largest ammount of pop qwiz information on the net.

Anyway its pretty useless to argue about MB sicne matt has not definetively said he was going to bring them back or not.

Chestnuts roasted by Bright Noah @ 01/16/2004 3:33 PM

Matt,

You ever try Pez flavored popcorn? I bought a box a couple of years ago and I cannot force myself to taste it.

Chestnuts roasted by Poppy @ 01/16/2004 3:35 PM

Matt, why did you get rid of the message board in the first place? I remember having it, and then remember it dissapearing very quickly. Too much cash? Too much bad stuff being discussed? too difficult to mod?

just wondering.
