New Article: The Mystery of Hostess Choco-Diles!

Hope you're hungry -- here's a tribute to Hostess Choco-Diles! The snack cakes have taken on a cult following over the years, mainly because they've become so hard to find. If you live in a city that sells Choco-Diles, don't take it for granted. You're part of an elite minority. Promoted with the help of "Chauncey Choco-Dile," the chocolate-covered Twinkies are a sadly obscured corner of junk food history. Review includes everything from a trip to the Hostess Bakery to old commercials starring "Captain Cupcake."

You didn’t answer my question, what are all the fruits named by Whiskers the Kitten Who Can Name Fruit on Cartoon Network Fridays?

Chestnuts roasted by Whiskers' #1 fan @ 01/10/2004 11:54 PM

I don’t watch much Cartoon Network and have no clue who Whiskers the Kitten Who Can Name Fruit is although I am sure he deserves his own show or at least a guest spot on Conan O’Brien. I’ll guess anyway since I worry that lack of answers might make you angry enough to eat a cactus. I will guess that said talking kitten talks about pineapples, kiwi fruit, bananas and pears. If he talks about more than that, well, he shouldn’t.

You crazy Americans and your crazy food. And the crazy food laws that let you all have some things and us Canadians have other things. I love my ketchup chips, and my chocolate bars. Yes, chocolate bars, not candy bars. And beer. There, I am done with my patriotism for the year. What can I say, I am a keener; I like to get my assignments done early. Eww, back to school on Monday… someone kidnap me and take me to Hawaii where no one will ever find me.

I live in ST. Louis to and we have an abundance of them at our grocery store. As a matter of fact, i had some in my house before i was reading the article

Chestnuts roasted by OtherMatt @ 01/11/2004 3:47 AM

Unfairness reigns. Heeloyd has a broken computer, Gabby is Canadian, and I have no Chocodiles!

Lauren – The Wal-Mart by Coconuts and Barnes and Noble and what not? Damned if I know…I haven’t been in there in about a year. But, for some reason I seem to remember them having gignatic boxes of Ding Dongs(They are called Ding Dongs, at least in MA…) so it is a possibility.

Chestnuts roasted by Diabetic Dinosaur @ 01/11/2004 9:51 AM

The Wal*Mart I was talking about (and I’ll be there today to confirm) is in Bristol. I’ll let ya’all know if I see them. Of course, my main purpose is hunting Transformers, but if I see it I’ll post in this entry.

Kingklash, I’m not sure what you meant by that "tee hee", but I’m going to be insulted to save time. Never joke about the Sacred Food! Mankind was put on this planet for the express purpose of making cheesecake. Dirty humor involving the Sacred Food (especially when it involves my MOM!!!!!!) will get you smited. It would be in the Bible but it was written in the one Dead Sea Scroll whose jar wasn’t closed tight enough.

The only humor kingklash knows is dirty humor. Take that and he’s got nothing.

Do any of you remember the short-lived Devil’s Food Twinkies? The pacakaging featured a Negroid Twinkie the Kid. They were so damn good, but quickly disappeared. I wonder if they’re still available somewhere too??

Chestnuts roasted by EmperorBinky @ 01/11/2004 12:22 PM

Wait a minute!

Isn’t Mare Winningham the name of an actress?

Chestnuts roasted by sfghsdfghh @ 01/11/2004 1:03 PM

I never had a chocodile before, or had seen them that i can remember. so now I will have my eyes peeled every chance i can find to get my hands on spongecake shaped fatteners.

I go to the state fair every year, so they’ll probably show up fried and on a stick in the next few years. (I don’t know wether to feel hungry or queasy)

Chestnuts roasted by Luke @ 01/11/2004 1:32 PM

Um…sfghsdfghh…you’re just figuring that out?
Emperor Binky, I remember those!!! They were mighty tasty. I imagine they got pulled because of their spokes-Twinkie. First time I saw them my friend said it wouldn’t last long. And yet they have yellow cake and orange cupcakse and no differing characters on those…

Chestnuts roasted by Killer Duck @ 01/11/2004 1:36 PM

Duck, I’m sure it has been that cold before, but if it was I have blocked it out of my memory (or it was before I was born). I am just not made for the cold. My friends and I had to wear our coats, gloves, scarves in the bar we were at because it was so cold in there. Of course, that didn’t make us leave. I guess our need for alcohol was greater than our need for warmth. I wonder if that makes us alcoholics?

I’ll try not to be gone for so long again. Damn work, they should realize I have other commitments when I’m there!

amazing…amazing…

I distinctly remember both Moonpies and Choc-o-diles being widly available at the Krausers on St George Ave in Rahway NJ in the early 90′s. Of course, knowing Krauser’s they could easily have been stock from the late 70′s. That same Krausers store was where I got 5 plastic Max Headroon candy filled plastic heads — in 1996….

Chestnuts roasted by Garrison @ 01/11/2004 2:24 PM

As to the Choc-o-diles….what about eBay? Throw in a couple of sacks of White Castles and Utz Crab flavored potato chips. Now that’s a Jersey meal. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Garrison @ 01/11/2004 2:34 PM

Matt, we also have a Hostess Bakery in our town, and we often refer to it as "The Wonderbread Store". Aside from Chocodiles, they also have Ding Dongs and the usual lineup. Not bad when you consider it’s cheaper than buying them from the store

Chestnuts roasted by Kool-Aid Man @ 01/11/2004 3:31 PM

Dammit I want my Devil’s Food Twinkies!!! I mean come on it wasn’t THAT bad a mascot. At least he wasn’t carrying a 9mm and a 40.

Chestnuts roasted by EmperorBinky @ 01/11/2004 4:01 PM

As far as I know, Seanbaby doesn’t work with UGO anymore. He’s also pulled away from the 80′s Hostess Fruit Pies/Mr. T nostalgia racket and concentrates more on the video game stuff he writes for EGM and the frivolous lawsuits for The Wave magazine. A lot of Sean’s focus was always on video games and/or the stupidity of the world, while I see Matt’s work very differently. To me, Matt’s more about finding unusual things that kickstart memories. I still die laughing whenever I read any of Sean’s work, but I have a much more emotional response to a lot of what Matt writes.
I type this next to a box of Hostess Crispy Rice Treats, which I didn’t even know existed. I should also mention that yes, at least in SoCal there is no shortage of Chocodiles at the Hostess Thrift Store, otherwise known as "The Day-Old Bakery".

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 01/11/2004 4:09 PM

Well, I stopped at that Wal*Mart today and the results were inconclusive. There weren’t a whole lot on the shelves. Plenty of Swirly Q’s and Devil Dogs, though. Maybe because it’s a Sunday. Either way, I wouldn’t end thine searching just yet. (They also didn’t have the Overload Transformer. Darn it!)

Devils Food Twinkies. I think I tried those once. Not as good as the magic wonder of his Caucasian counterpart, but still awfully darn good. What happened to them, or am I just not paying that close attention?

Chestnuts roasted by ShadowWing the Technorganic Choco-Dile Hunter @ 01/11/2004 7:05 PM

My dog is stalking the leftover pizza. It is in a closed box and not moving but he still is expecting it to do something. I love my dog but I think he is not all there between his enormous ears.
If you ever saw me at the mall when it was busy I would be the one climbing a fake tree and quacking loudly.

Chestnuts roasted by Killer Duck @ 01/11/2004 7:17 PM

Ok, I KNOW That you will NOT read this… but yet, here is my small little post.

I live in this magical land where Choco*diles are a thing of everyday here… No, actually no. They arent called Choco*Diles, but THEY ARE Choco*diles.

Instead, they are Called Gansitos ("Little Gooses") and This land, my friend, is Mexico.

Gansitos had been done ever since the 30´s here by BIMBO, our Mayor Bread company. How they are different to Choco*Diles? Well, lets explain the them :

Gansitos = Choco*Diles in the facts that :
- Are Sponge Cakes
- Are Chocolate Covered
- Have a Creamy Filling

BUT, Gansitos :
- Have a STRAWBERRY FILLING WITH THE CREAM.

Yeah, think of Gansitos has Bastardized Choco*diles. Yet, every once in a while, Bastardizations of a Nice Cake taste Better.

Trust me, You Need this "Evolution" in Choco*Diles. You need to taste the thing that COULD had been with them…

Yeah, they are THAT Good.

I hate you all. I’ve been on this almost fruitless quest for Moonpies. Matt couldn’t have unleashed this six months ago when I was in Indiana and surrounded by the things. I found some at a gas station and I’m too embarrassed to go back. But I found two at the convience store near me and once those run out I’ll probably be back to the gas station to buy them out.

I have a feeling all the overtime I’m getting will be going to Moonpies. At least those can be gotten online.
