New Article: The Mystery of Hostess Choco-Diles!

Hope you're hungry -- here's a tribute to Hostess Choco-Diles! The snack cakes have taken on a cult following over the years, mainly because they've become so hard to find. If you live in a city that sells Choco-Diles, don't take it for granted. You're part of an elite minority. Promoted with the help of "Chauncey Choco-Dile," the chocolate-covered Twinkies are a sadly obscured corner of junk food history. Review includes everything from a trip to the Hostess Bakery to old commercials starring "Captain Cupcake."

Wow that post was a whole lot of nothing

Well, I can’t say I’ve seen Choco-Diles recently, but I know I had some about two years ago. There were selling them at small grocerie stories up here in northern Idaho.

Matt, this was hilarious! I’d never heard of Choco-Diles until last year on the WB’s "Angel."

Cordelia Chase (character on the program) was in sugar-high heaven over the thing. This set off a heated round of "What are Choco-Diles and where do get them?" on the alt.tv.angel newsgroup.

The Californians were the only ones on the newsgroup who had access to the bakery delight.

I’m from Massatwoshits but nowhere near Pittsfield. I’ve driven past there before but I kept on driving.
Heeloyd I just read your comments about my mural…I usually never go back to previous Blogs…I think I am going to rebuild it a little. If I do I will take pictures and post them on my site. I still have a huge craft thing filled with random body parts waiting for mutation, white and black craft paint and glue sticks. More cow headed aliens in the works :)

Wow, I missed a few days since I was busy at work and did I ever have a load to catch up on. Between the 130+ comments on the 49 pieces o’ crap and the 100+ on here, reading the blog is becoming a lenghty process as well as reading the 80,000+ word articles. Who am I kidding, I love every word of it!

To add another vote to the mix, I am from Philadelphia and have never heard of Chocodiles before this article. Also, I have never heard of "King Dons", they have always been Ding Dongs here.

I woke up this morning and the little temperature tracker and the new said it was 5 degrees! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a temp that low. Of course, I think it’s too cold when it’s 50. Christ, I can’t wait for the summer!!

If you want to keep the Choco-diles from going bad, put them in a swan-neck flask. Then, they’ll never go bad.

Chestnuts roasted by gmfbrown @ 01/10/2004 2:51 PM

I thought that I’d add that in Ohio, we have King Dons, not Ding Dongs. On the Choco-dile front, I haven’t SEEN them, but I’ll have to keep an eye out for them.

Twinkies, chocolate fudge, Kit Kat, and cheesecake (especially my Mom’s) should be considered the four food groups of snack food.

Try looking at Wal*Mart. I think I’ve seen them at a big Wal*Mart here in Connecticut. I don’t know if the grocery store I work at has them or not.

I know for a fact that I am not made up by someone in another state. No one would make up a Choctaw/Arapaho/Kiowa/Comanche in Two-Dog-and-Half-a-Horse, Oklahoma just to boost thier ego. I ain’t that lucky. And now, an out-of-context quote :"He did it! Charlie Brown got it up! And I helped!"

tee-hee. His mom’s CheeseCake.

I’d never seen or heard of Choco-diles before the article. I don’t they are common in Minnesota. However, curious about then today though I took a detour to check the nearest Hostess Thrift Store and there they were. So the any other Minnesotans out there, you can find them! I also grabbed a Peach Fruit Pie, I had no idea they even made peach.

FYI- the 7-11′s in Fort Collins, CO have an ample supply of chocodiles, for those seeking you may want to check with the bakeries in colorado as well!

I work as A vendor for George Weston (Thomas’, Arnold, Freihofer, Entenmann’s….and so on) You think THAT was a lot of bread? pah! I just finished up a day where i put, and this is the truth, 250 english muffin 12-packs into a stop and shop… fukkin 12-packs…
Oh, and by the way, have you ever seen what happens to a IBC Apple pie when it’s 2 months past expiration? i had the pleasure of stepping in one today… not fun. OH! If you can find a George Weston bread terminal (not thrift store) and you can convince them that you’re a farmer, they’ll give you as much stale product as you want. Serious.

I once saw a parody ad submitted to Marvel with the ThunderBolts eating fruit pies. ‘Twas funny enough that Marvel redid the art to better match the old ads. Just seeing Zemo eat a fried pie was hilarious!

Can you someday post a list of all the fruits named by Whiskers the Kitten Who Can Name Fruit on Cartoon Network’s Fridays? I think he is the only amusing part of that show with the dumb kinds, Zingor, and whatshisname

Man I grew up in Middlesex County, NJ. Woodbridge was a place I have been to on many an occasion, the mall in particular. Can’t say I’ve been to the Hostess sto’ though.

I live in Hollywood, CA now, and I must say, I see Choco-Diles seemingly everywhere. I think I’m actually gonna buy a package today, and with each bite I take my mind will be filled with the thoughts of what my Jersey brethren be missin’.

Seriously though, I loved the article, especially because it had pictures of home. Between this article, and the one from a while back featuring your trip to Easy Video, it makes me forget how much I miss Jersey.

Keep it up Matt, I love your site. And I think I speak for all displaced Jersey-ites everywhere when I say so. Keep up field trips to exotic locales such as Woodbridge, and you’ve guaranteed your readers a tremendous experience they will not soon forget.

king, are you from Oklahoma? I tried to make sense out of what you said but it was kind of um…rambling. My sister and brother in law live out there. Did someone accuse you of not being you? If it was me, was I drunk? If not, why wasn’t I???
Y2J, Philly has never gone to 5 degrees? Sheit, here in Mass it gets that cold a lot. I feel like you were gone forever. Never leave again, dammit.

They keep throwing us some new ones around here…one of the regional bakeries introduced red velvet "Twinkies" (Twinkalikes?) last summer. The actual cake part was right on the money, but I was a bit disappointed that the filling didn’t taste more like the cream cheese icing that usually tops the real red velvet cakes. Anyway, they popped up for a month and disappeared again. What a world…

If it weren’t for the accessibility of Chocodiles, I would have considered leaving California a while ago. Thanks a lot for that article, man. It’s nice to know that there are others out there who enjoy them as much as I do. In fact, I’m gonna pick some up in a few .
(3 for $1.00)

Keep up the kick-ass work!

FuzzyFurryFoxie and Shadow Wing – now my curiosity is piqued. There’s a Super Wal*Mart in Lisbon, too. Which mysterious Connecticut Wal*Mart was meant? The world may never know…

Chestnuts roasted by trajeal @ 01/10/2004 9:38 PM

Diabetic Dinosaur, actually I’m in North Adams, but I work in Pittsfield. The Bakery is along the last one minute of my drive in to work. Or those last few minutes before the end of lunch…

Does Wal-Mart have them?
