New Article: The Mystery of Hostess Choco-Diles!

Hope you're hungry -- here's a tribute to Hostess Choco-Diles! The snack cakes have taken on a cult following over the years, mainly because they've become so hard to find. If you live in a city that sells Choco-Diles, don't take it for granted. You're part of an elite minority. Promoted with the help of "Chauncey Choco-Dile," the chocolate-covered Twinkies are a sadly obscured corner of junk food history. Review includes everything from a trip to the Hostess Bakery to old commercials starring "Captain Cupcake."

Does anyone think that a Chocodile would be a great tool for recreating that famous scene from Caddyshack? Baby Ruth might be great, but the small nature of the Crocodile is perfect. Also the chocolate covering should keep it from falling apart, and the it’s soft nature would make if belivable.

Dang, gotta find a pool that is open and try this out.

In the interest of behaving somewhat and seeming ladylike there is one word I have always self censored when I used it on the blog. Today is a day when I shall break it out of its secure plastic housing becuase today it is needed. What the fuck???!
Now I shall just sit here in a curled up ball, thumb in mouth, trying to make sense of the universe.

On my lunch break i decided to check out the hostess store that i pass every day on the way to work. its on route 110 in melville, li. it was just like the picture. old looking, small, stocked to the brim, and smelling sweet. they had everything that matt had in the article but no choco-diles. i would have asked if the guy working there when was the last time they had them in, but he was in the back getting a shipment i think.

The only mention of Chocodiles that I knew of was in the movie "Summer School".

Here Mark Harmon tries to wile Kirstie Alley by telling her to try a pop tart. She tells him that she will stick to the chocodiles, which I thought was some type of health food or something. It’s obvious that "I’ll stick to the chocodiles" can be added to the great rejection lines of all time, including "It’s not you, it’s me", "Let’s be friends", and "You’re like a brother to me."

Maybe I’m just hoping someone will review "Summer School".

The chocodiles are probably ok to eat still. Food and beverage people put the experation date ahead of when they actually do expire. Its a safety bumper so they dont get sued and such. So feel free to by old chocodiles and one gallon milk everyone.

They sell Chocodiles in Utah (Provo, Orem, etc. at several hundred locations – mostly convenience stores – in the valley. I had no idea they were so hard to find. They used to be three for a buck, but now are up to two for a buck. Come on over, we have plenty.

Does anyone remember Choco- Bliss that came out in the late eighties? Choco-Bliss was the only reason why I use to be fat.

Firsty, I’d like to say I’ve lived in the East my whole life, and never have I ever seen anything called a "King don." It’s ALWAYS been Ding Dongs in Massachusetts.

Secondly, I went to one of those Hostess thrift stores up here last year, the only difference was that most of the food WAS expired, or was about to expire within days. Ick.

Thirdly, I have never had a Chocodile and that makes me sad. I wonder if I can find them in Massachusetts? Guess I’m gonna have to start my own endless search.

Sigh. Thanks Matt.

I am pretty sure they have them here in Columbus, OH too. I know I saw them very recently. It appears that most midwestern cities have them, based on the responses.

It figures. I think the mid west contains most of the top 10 fattest cities in the nation.

I’m going to buy a box of those tonight.

HAHA! Good work, Matt. I’m from the St. Louis area, and I can tell you that Chocodiles used to be widely available until about 10 years ago. Shame, really… When I first started dating my wife, some random conversation led me to tell her about them. For years she refused to believe such a thing existed until I played her the song "Chocodile" on Soul Coughing’s Irresistible Bliss album. She finally caved…

Matt, what can I say? You have once again completely outdone yourself :) If you aren’t going to eat ‘em, sell the fuckers. Finding an autographed Choco-dile in my mailbox would change my life.

Chestnuts roasted by Kristal @ 01/09/2004 4:42 PM

I second the suggestion to freeze them. Expiration dates are, as others have mentioned, suggestions. BUT – freeze those puppies and you’ll have ChocoDiles forever. Sweeeet…

Deep-Fried Frozen ChocoDiles. It’s slobberin’ time!

Great article. I remember when there used to be this one Bakery Thrift Store Called Dolly Madison in South Sacramento. My mom would go there every Wednesday and bring my brother and I along. We would get to pick out one thing for ourselves. Usually I’d just head straight for the candy, but there were times when I would pick out something from Hostess. I still love Twinkies, but everything else just makes me sick to my stomach.

One of the greatest things about living in Southern California is that there seem to be Chocodiles everywhere. I buy them at the Chevron station by my house all the time.

There is nothing quite like kicking back with a couple of Chocodiles and a Mountain Dew to wash it down. Mmmmmmm. It makes me feel like I’m 12 again.

Undiscovered nests of ChocoDiles.

i like snackies. whatever happened to jello pudding pops? those things ruled and made me want to eat them all the damn time.

Chestnuts roasted by jobot @ 01/09/2004 6:15 PM

Sell the things on ebay or make a tower. I’m sure after a while chocodiles will be wonderful building blocks.

B-Dawg – was it the Worcester, MA Hostess store you stopped at? B/c I was going to take a ride up there this weekend to check, but if you know they’re out o’ Chocodilios, I won’t bother.

Chestnuts roasted by trajeal @ 01/09/2004 6:41 PM

Don’t worry about the expiration date. Those Hostess products have enough preservatives to last for months.

On the same note, do you know that undertakers are saying that people are decaying slower than they used too, most likely because of us eating so much of those same preservatives?

Back in high school, I used to work at a grocery store in Evansville, IN and I will never forget my first day. The guy assigned to show me around was walking down an aisle and came across the snack cake display. He looks at me and says "Look, chocodiles" and then stuffed about 8 of them in his jacket pockets. He was really fat.
