X-E’s Thanksgiving Season — & The Charlie Brown TG Feast!

The lengths I go through to keep this place festive. If you haven't noticed, X-E's main page is now engulfed in the Thanksgiving spirit -- something that's never really engulfed me personally, but dammit, let's give it a shot. Longtime readers probably know that Christmas is more of my thing, but if there's one thing I learned this past Halloween, it's not to start the festivities too early. All that said, I think you'll really enjoy what's in store for this month. I honestly believe that what will be some of the best articles in X-E history are on deck for the coming weeks, and as we grow closer and closer to December, we're looking at two full months of really fun stuff. Then, in January, I die from exhaustion and swear off all holidays in general forevermore. Enjoy it while you can!

Oh, and sorry to all of the readers outside the States. I know, I know -- these changes can't possibly do much for ya. Don't worry...the articles will.

To celebrate, there's been eight new commercials posted on the main page, ranging from Bubble Tape's classic "For You - Not Them" ad to one of my favorite action figures of all time, the Masters of the Universe "Modulok" figure. (I did a piece on him for UGO last year -- click here) Course, it wouldn't be a new season on X-E without an article to usher it in, sooo....

Some of you might remember "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" -- the networks very rarely broadcast Thanksgiving specials these days, but trust me, it's a good one. The money scene features Snoopy, Charlie Brown and Linus doing their best to cook the Peanuts gang a Thanksgiving feast using nothing more than some bread, popcorn, and loads of jelly beans. I've been intrigued with the holy offering since childhood, and finally decided that it was time to recreate Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving. When the paddywagon comes, "somebody had to do it" is my only excuse. Enjoy.

By the way, this ol' blog turned "1" last month. Totally forgot to buy it a present. Here's what was going on a year ago. Spongebob live, baby.

Heh, heh, heh, pretzels. Heh, heh, heh, beans of jelly. Heh, heh, heh, ice cream and such. Well that’s enough.

You can always count on Matt to recreate a cartoon’s Thanksgiving dinner. That actually made me hungry… and I’m never hungry. Curse you, Matt!

Some of X-E’s greatest articles to ever be written? This should be interesting…

Heh, I remember those holiday specials with fondness. My personal faves are, and still are, Rudolph The Rednosed Reindeer, the puppet version of course, and Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown. I didn’t really watch too many Thanksgiving specials, other than the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parades that were always on every year. Oh yeah, and I also remember when The Fridge scored that touchdown. It was a Thanksgiving to be remembered!

My thoughts on Snoopy’s delicatessen–the popcorn he makes is white, therefore plain (ie, unbuttered). How does one eat popcorn without flavor of some kind? I know there are people who do eat it but it’s freakish, abnormal, and frightening and thus those people should mocked, abused, and ridiculed (I just love to be redundant (and use parentheses)). But seriously, what’s with people eating egg whites or buying bottled water? (drinking tap is perfectly normal because the body needs it, BUYING plain water is another thing entirely) America is a land of taste and flavor, don’t hold back. That’s the lesson of the day. I see that Matt used buttered popcorn and thus is deemed groovy–let that be a message to everyone!

Dude, you are hilarious! I LOVE this flick, and just saw your reproduction with the stand-in stuffed Snoopy. All that buttered toast makes me super hungry…keep it coming!

Matt,
In yer article you mentioned the use of fake butter?
Did you use a substitute?
That wasn’t butter I hope…
It looked like old cheese or wax of some kind. (Damn crusty lookin’)

Goddammit! I was wrong! I totally predicted that you were NOT going to do a thanksgiving theme and do a Christmas one instead! C’mon, Matt. Thanksgiving may be a fun holiday when it comes to eatin’ and all, but I want my damn Christmas theme!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Nate (Dammit, Matt!) @ 11/04/2003 9:37 PM

Nate my friend, don’t you worry. This will be our best Christmas season yet. As for T-G, I think you’ll be okay with it by…hmmm, let’s say Friday. :)

Just so you know, I wasn’t REALLY angry in my last post. Anyway, good job with the design.

I come from a big family where Thanksgiving is a huge deal, so I was glad to see Matt didn’t pass it by this year like the rest of the world tends to. I consider the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special to be a small gem – it’s not as good as either the first Christmas special or the Halloween special, but it’s far above all of the Thanksgiving specials I remember but one.

Two years ago, ABC ran a surprisingly good Winnie the Pooh Thanksgiving special. It was the simple but effective tale of Rabbit’s desperation to have the "perfect" holiday – and finding that he had it already, with a smorgasboard of thistles and honey not far removed from Charlie Brown’s odd spread. Like Chuck and Peppermint Patty, everyone’s favorite neurotic yellow bunny learned that Thanksgiving isn’t about what we eat, but why we eat it…and who we eat it with. It’s ironic that the best Pooh holiday special that I’ve seen should be for a very American holiday, given that Pooh and his pals are British.

As for Charlie Brown’s infamous meal, I was looking at Matt’s spread and thinking it might not be such a bad thing. It could even pass for a Thanksgiving after-dinner tray for adventurous and non-traditional eaters.

did you know there are 2 different thanksgiving Peanuts specials 1 is the with the meal made up of jellybeans and such and the other was made in the 80s and is a historical pov of the first thanksgiving with the Peanuts characters. I know it exists I have it on tape.

Hehe I always thought it looked tasty as a kid but Snoopy just bored the hell outta me as did Scooby doo. LAME lol! I loved Garfield though and I think we still have all 3 specials. I remember the Thanksgiving one thats where John got a date with Liz but he couldnt cook a turkey lol ‘butter skin…well I dont see what good it will do but oh well’ LOL brillant! Ohh Matt as long as we’re pimping Xmas specials to be reviewed why not review "Pooky Puppys Christmas" I think it was called. Its the most fucking annoying thing ever I assure you would love lol!

So Thanksgiving has come and gone for us up here in Canada, but oh man, am I glad you got Thanksgiving goin’ on this here site. It’s nice to see something different, and TG doesn’t get that much cred, except for warehouse deals and TG-themed car commercial giveaways. Bring on the post-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving! Fare thee well, Canucks!

I watched this movie every day at my babysitters house, it was between that or ET, whome i was deathly afraid of. this is very much a "comfort" movie to me. by the way, what did you do with all the food you made? and, this is one of your better recent articles. I laughed out loud in the library

I loved this article. Matt, thank you so much, your creative spark has been shown yet again and is on display for everyone to see with another fun article. I’ve got the DVD of the Thanksgiving speacial, and watch it yearly with my girlfriend. I’ve always been confused, yet very interested and in awe of the meal they originally cook up before heading to Grandma’s to eat the real stuff. To recreate that meal from this obscure classic was a stroke of genius and was a very nice holiday surprise. Loved it. Can’t wait to see what’s on the horizion this month. Great job, Matt!

ABC airs this again now, however they’re putting ads for lame sitcoms over the credits like they do with everything else. This cuts out the best joke in the entire cartoon — where after everybody leaves, Snoopy pulls out the REAL dinner he made, complete with stuffed turkey and all, and he and Woodstock eat it. Without that scene….oi, it NEEDS that scene!!

Wow I can’t believe the blog is a whole year old. Many happy returns. I feel like I’ve reached a milestone as an X-E reader.

That is a fine looking feast. I forgot about thanksgiving, even though it happened already here. Shows how much I get into it. But hey, makes for a long weekend.

I’m inspired to recreate a cartoon feast and photograph it but I can’t bring myself to rip you off.

Tell me that some where there is a cartoon with a meal in it to make the mouth water!

"Doy."
Simply brilliant, my good boy. It’s good to hear someone utter that word in today’s time. It seems like it was long forgotten. The last time I remembered hearing that one-worded phrase was when my chap Wordsy was sucked into Robert Louise Stevenson’s "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." Following after him, I travelled through the pages of this classic tale to find Wordsy curdled in fear to the maniacal Mr. Hyde. When I asked the muscle-induced fellow if he planned on ripping good Wordsy apart from limb to limb, Mr. Hyde replied, "Doy!" We all sat there in silence before breaking up into "hiss"teria. Well, I dare say that Mr. Hyde was good to his word, or Wordsy I might say. He beat that poor bastard like he was a feline pinata, only instead of water taffy and peanut brittle falling from his shattered shell, it was half-chewed tender vittles and blood. Rest in Peace, Wordsy. You will be missed.

"Recreating Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving Dinner": this was absolutely priceless. It was fun to read and it looked like a lot of fun to do. (I haven’t had Jiffy Pop in years. I didn’t even know it was still around!) You’ve made my day.
