X-E’s Thanksgiving Season — & The Charlie Brown TG Feast!

The lengths I go through to keep this place festive. If you haven't noticed, X-E's main page is now engulfed in the Thanksgiving spirit -- something that's never really engulfed me personally, but dammit, let's give it a shot. Longtime readers probably know that Christmas is more of my thing, but if there's one thing I learned this past Halloween, it's not to start the festivities too early. All that said, I think you'll really enjoy what's in store for this month. I honestly believe that what will be some of the best articles in X-E history are on deck for the coming weeks, and as we grow closer and closer to December, we're looking at two full months of really fun stuff. Then, in January, I die from exhaustion and swear off all holidays in general forevermore. Enjoy it while you can!

Oh, and sorry to all of the readers outside the States. I know, I know -- these changes can't possibly do much for ya. Don't worry...the articles will.

To celebrate, there's been eight new commercials posted on the main page, ranging from Bubble Tape's classic "For You - Not Them" ad to one of my favorite action figures of all time, the Masters of the Universe "Modulok" figure. (I did a piece on him for UGO last year -- click here) Course, it wouldn't be a new season on X-E without an article to usher it in, sooo....

Some of you might remember "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" -- the networks very rarely broadcast Thanksgiving specials these days, but trust me, it's a good one. The money scene features Snoopy, Charlie Brown and Linus doing their best to cook the Peanuts gang a Thanksgiving feast using nothing more than some bread, popcorn, and loads of jelly beans. I've been intrigued with the holy offering since childhood, and finally decided that it was time to recreate Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving. When the paddywagon comes, "somebody had to do it" is my only excuse. Enjoy.

By the way, this ol' blog turned "1" last month. Totally forgot to buy it a present. Here's what was going on a year ago. Spongebob live, baby.

I remember watching that special(and the seldom-shown Garfield one). That bit of food they had DID look pretty good. Nice job on the recreation, and bonus points for even having Snoopy there. Given my current budget, that might be my Thanksgiving this year ;P

And yes, Peppermint Patty was a total bitchy dyke. I like the older Peanuts strips where Charlie Brown would’ve told the bitch off as he backhanded her… but, that’s just me.

In all honesty, I remember that there was such a thing as a Peanuts Thanksgiving special, but I don’t actually remember anything that happened on that special. It’s just not as classic as the original Charlie Brown Christmas and the It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown specials. For some reason, I have an easier time remembering what happened in the Peanuts Arbor Day special, actually. Of course, keep in mind that I am a deviant whom celebrates Thanksgiving a month and a half early.

I do remember the Garfield Thanksgiving special, but I have the book of it.

By the way, now that you’ve reviewed one film in the Tobe Hooper canon, care to review anything else? Like a certain one with space vampire zombies in London and a naked Mathilda May?

First reaction when I got to the homepage?

Holy…

Freaking…

CRAP!

That said, I like the new look. As for CBT, I know it exists and I remember having seen it, but all I can remember from it was Snoopy trying to make dinner.

Am I the only one who wants to see a Charlie Brown Kwanzaa?

You know, I know that Charles Schultz had serious problems "wit da ladies" (hell, I’ve probably had more girlfriends than ole’ Chuck) but did he have to take revenge by making every cartoon girl Charlie could have reasonably fucked (without violating incest taboos) an annoyingly raving bitch? C’mon Schultz: maybe it’s not that every woman who rejected you is a bitch — maybe all those women are on to something and you actually are a bit of a weenie.

I nominate Charles Schultz’ corpse for the next ep. of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Oh dear. You can’t do that to a person so early in the morning.

What I wanna know is, one year later, how’s the flea market doing, Matt?

Chestnuts roasted by Roddy @ 11/04/2003 6:43 AM

Ah, it’s time to bring out the Charlie Brown thanksgiving special again….. then Bugs Bunny’s Thanksgiving Diet, that’s always a good one. Right after the wuzzles commercial.
If only you could have recreated the sound of the plates full of food landing as Snoopy frisbees them in front of each kid. And the lawn chair fight, which scared the crap out of me as a child, and still kind of does..

Oh Lordy! How I <3 your articles;) I really need to stop reading them while in school attempting to do work…people start to look at me weird when they don’t know why I’m laughing…and yeah, Snoopy rox my sox!

the smells of popcorn and buttered toast were probably great.

7 and 77? Hmm, Hermes just came around too.

im surprised they have those goya juices up up there in NJ. i live in uber-latino south florida and i figured the goya products were tailored for that demographic. anyway, the mango and tamarind are really good. does anyone else remember those "goya, oh-boy-a" commercials?

Hot damn!! Let’s all go to Matt’s house this Thanksgiving. He knows how to lay out quite a spread!

Hey Matt! As promised, Halloween has ended, and I am once again beginning my crusade to bring the the rest of the Photog pictures to a place where we can at last view them in all their splendor and glory. PHOTOG, PHOTOG, PHOTOG! Please don’t make me write Haikus again in protest. Just bring out the pics! Thanks, the Countdown was GREAT!

its hard to believe the ol’ blog is a year old. yea.

What’s really hard to believe is that Matt hasn’t been picked up by some major publication… With all of the drivel that’s being spoonfed to the public everyday, it’s refreshing to read the work of someone who can paint pictures with words… Also, anyone that calls Peppermint Patty an "unappreciative twat" is A-OK in my book… = ]

The dude’s first name is INDIGO, not Enigo. But I’ll let that slide because I try to follow in Andre the Giants footsteps of non-violence. Them are some big feets.

I don’t know why this article reminded me of how I was scared of the Garfield Halloween special as a kid… disturbing.

You’re holding my hand, Chuck-you sly dog. Best line that bitch Patty ever uttered. And no stupid Snoopy fighting WWII battles. Just a dog and his bird fighting over costumes. My kind of holiday.

Matt, this isnt about thanksgiving persay, but ive seen the house from halloween!! in fact, i see it every year (it always catches my eye on the right side of the main road – dont want to give away too many locations here). nonetheless, they do the same thing for christmas – seriously, its insane! you can barely walk around their yard, there’s so much christmas goodness around. you should do an aritcle about this house over christmas too – its twice as packed.

Hey Matt, just thought you would like to know, when I click on the commercial for the Tail Spin plane it just opens a new windown that goes straight back to the home page instead of playing the commercial.

NecroticFace –
It’s definitely Inigo. Check the book dude.

That dinner actually looks nice. :p

I was rummaging through my old VCR tapes of shows I recorded as a kid awhile back, and in my futile attempt to find ANY trace of Saturday Supercade (why didn’t I record it.. WHY?!?) I found that I recorded both the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special and Bugs Bunny’s Thanksgiving Diet.

I forgot all about the dinner preperation scene until I got to watch it again. ^_^

Strangely enough, I didn’t seem to record the Garfield Thanksgiving one, and can’t remember any details. :(

Oh yeah, ABC supposedly showed "It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" this season, but I never saw it.. they cut too much out of them these days for MORE commercials anyway. -_-

By the way, I wish they’d show What a Nightmare, Charlie Brown on TV again (well, on a channel I could watch in Canada). That’s the weird one wherein Snoopy dreams that he’s a sled dog. I think I was about 4 when it first aired (1978) and it’s actually one of the first specific things I remember watching on television and, boy, did it freak me out back then. Not that I think anything which even older children would find particularly frightening happened in the special, just that, in the dream, it seemed like he had been completely abandoned by Charlie Brown which I suppose I equated with being abandoned by my parents.

On VHS, it was coupled with It’s Magic, Charlie Brown, which I also vaguely remember… Snoopy turns Charlie Brown invisible, and, like Kevin Bacon, Charlie Brown takes full advantage of his invisibility, though, by "taking full advantage of his invisibility", I mean "he tries to kick the football Lucy was holding even though she doesn’t think he’s around". Or maybe Lucy had infrared heat-sensing goggles? Well, maybe she did; it’s been two decades since I’ve seen it.

If they ever released the same combo of those two Peanuts specials on DVD, that would be almost as certain a buy for me as the hypothetical DVD of The Worst Witch with a commentary track done by Matt I wish they’d make.

Anyone notice how in the picture of the Thanksgiving table there are 3 kids and Snoopy all crammed together on one side, but the little black boy is segregated and has to sit on the other side by himself?

Chestnuts roasted by Jesse Jackson @ 11/04/2003 3:41 PM

Brilliant writing as usual, Matt. I never did like it how Charlie Brown was always being verbally put down by everyone (Peppermint Patty, Lucy, etc.) and just once, I wouldn’t have minded seeing him tell his detractors what they could go do with themselves (hint: it starts with "f").

What other holiday specials are you planning to review BTW? When Christmas rolls around you should have a big selection of specials to review. Could you do a review of the Christmas Raccoons or even an article on the Raccoons TV series? In case you haven’t noticed by my handle, I am a Raccoons fan. Do you remember them? If not, there’s a whole webpage dedicated to them:
http://www.gilsinan.com/raccoons

I could even help you out with writing them too.

Anyway, excellent article. Keep up the good work.
