09/24/2003: gurgle

This week’s Top Eleven, kind of a quickie, takes a look back ay my favorite movie sequels.  I’m sure a few (or everyone) will debate the list, but I figured I’d stay true to what I felt instead of writing about some of the more popular sequels I’ve either never seen or just don’t have much of an interest in.  It’s the list that puts “Gremlins 2″ in the top spot and totally excludes “Godfather II,” so yeah, I know, I’m asking for it.  Actually, don’t read it yet, because I somehow frigged up the editing and chopped off what should’ve been in the top three.  Hello, McFly, I’m a fool.

Last night, we visited one of my sisters, and her son broke out the paper and crayons for a “look at what I’m drawing, everyone!” session.  You know how that goes.  Taken with the Halloween spirit, he debuted a masterpiece: Frankenstein, with red fangs, red eyes, and a biker jacket covered in knives.  We got into a discussion over what would be the worst way to get killed by this particular Frankenstein, both agreeing that the jacket blades were a far worse fate than the oddly red teeth.  I dunno, to me, that’s what this season is all about.  The Countdown has been updated with a look at a Halloween staple — phony spider webs.

What about Fly II?  Is there no love anymore?

Here is what I wrote here before about Gremlins 2:  http://x-entertainment.com/upd...entries/archives/00000227.html
"I still get in arguments, well once in a while, over why Gremlins 2 is the greatest sequel ever. Supposedly, Escape from L.A. was going for the same awareness vibe of a sequel knowing the deal with sequels, but Escape failed in that case.

‘Handsome’ John Pruitt is right with saying get the DVDs. I laugh thinking about Joe Dante showing Dick Morris in the gag reel how the bat gremlin will react to the actor by flapping a cardboard cutout at the end of a piece of wood."

While searching the X-E archives I also found this interesting fact from Richard: http://x-entertainment.com/upd...entries/archives/00000192.html

Ted Turner’s End of the World tape as parodied in Gremlins 2:  http://forums.alternet.org/gue...gfgjM+-chjz+MediaCulture+43+20
What would your tape annoucing the end of the world consist of?
This is what Ted Turner has planned, according to Mitchell Fink of NYDaily News:

"…Turner, it seems, has been a doom-and-gloom kind of guy from the very day in June 1980 when he launched the cable network. He said then, as only he could, "We gonna go on air June 1, and we gonna stay on until the end of the world. When that time comes, we’ll cover it,play ‘Nearer, My God, to Thee,’ and sign off.

"Ten years later, I’m told, Turner used CNN production facilities to create what he called his "end-of-the-world" video. Sources tell me it consists of a recording of "Nearer, My God," over footage of a waving American flag. Turner is said to have ordered the tape locked away until it was determined that the world was about to end.

"It was like a sign-off tape that you often see in the middle of the night," says one source. "But to Ted, it was a sign-off forever." Posted by Richard @ 07/06/2003 11:12 AM EST

Matt if your reasons for excluding LOTR: The Two Towers included anything about Ents and Faramir, I’m right with you.  There were points in that movie where I just plain felt betrayedby Peter Jackson after the masterful job he did w/Fellowship and how loyal he kept to the book.

On another note: TMNT II?  You couldn’t find one better sequel you’ve watched ever?  I was a TMNT fan as a kid, but never liked the movies all that much (1st one was pretty good), but c’mon.  I’d rather watch an Indiana Jones movie any day.

Posted by TOP1214 @ 09/24/2003 5:17 PM EDT

Well, I’m huge on those Turtles, so it was pretty much a given no matter how much it sucked.  I wouldn’t say it was better than the first, but I had loads of fun with it when it came out.

On still another note, checked out the Countdown, and that second picture Matt almost smiles!  Well, at least he almost completely stops frowning, and that’s almost completely close enough in my book.

Smiling is overrated.  If someone is constantly smiling I’m inclined to believe they’re not all there.  Anyway, another great list by Matt

Posted by Elliott @ 09/24/2003 6:13 PM EDT

I noticed Matt stopped frowning so much too. But I just put that on the backburner until it was brought back to the TOP1214.

Terminator 2? Helllloooo? Hello, McFly? Anybody home? Oh yeah, BTTF Part II…

Also, I remember you once mentioned the Gremlins novel being one of your first books. Well, I read the Gremlins 2 book in 6th grade before I saw the first move (maybe) and before I saw the second movie (I still haven’t). It’s pretty good, it goes pretty in-depth. There’s even a chapter where the Brain Gremlin types about communism! "I’m guessing you haven’t seen the movie. Well, at this point, the Gremlins burst out of the screen and kill the audience. Truly." And you learn his name (I forgot what it is, but he mentions how dissapointed he is that he was just referred to as "Brain Gremlin" in the script). And it ends with the novelist smashing through his bathroom door with an axe. Priceless. Go out and read it TODAY!

Oh yeah, and just reread the Supergirl review. Why not any screencaps of Helen Slater in panties, hmm?

Hey hey kiddos.  Job well done Matt.  Its nice to see the Robocop trilogy get the well need respect it deserves.  I know its a little cheezy (with a "z" thank you) but I loved these ultra-violent movies when I was a kid and still do.

There is alot more subtexture than any casual movie watchers would notice at a regual glance.  The series is anti-corporate and about man playing god in a corrupt city.

Anywho, the 3rd one gets ripped alot but was pretty decent.  It would’ve been a trillion times better if Peter Weller reprised his role.  But I guess he was busy do other movies like "Naked Lunch" and that movie USA network movie about the true story of Vlad Dracula where Weller played a Slavik Orthodox priest.

Did I mention that Peter Weller is awsome.

No Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors? Dokken’s career is spinning in its grave right now.

Great to see Bogus Journey on there, though. It’s especially better if you’ve ever seen the Seventh Seal.

with that costume you could be "Walking into Spiderwebs". I just had to say that :)You could make that a No Doubt themed costume by covering yourself in Spiderwebs and telephone cords and play the song "Spiderwebs".

Posted by pikachulover @ 09/24/2003 8:56 PM EDT

Two of my all-time favorite movies are on this list, so I’m happy already. As for the others…

Robocop II - I’m not into hugely violent films, and I’ve never really gotten into Robocop.
TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze - Nowhere near as fun as the first flick, but it has its moments, especially the introduction of Tokkar and Razar, making the anti-mutagen ("Try carrying it on the subway. I never got a seat so fast in my life."), and the wild nightclub finale. ("And now it’s time for the tradidtional pre-fight donut!" "Thanks, Raph, I may never have the hic-ups again.")
Superman II - Superman is one of the few superheroes I’ve ever really been interested in, and this is probably is best big-screen appearance (and that includes two cheezy late-40s serials). The story is intelligent, the villains are phenomenal (Ursa was a great addition), and the element of making Superman vulnerable through something other than Kryptonite adds suspense.
Ghostbusters II - Not great, and not quite as much fun as the first one, but it holds warm memories for me as the first movie I ever saw in a theater without parental supervision. (Translation - my sister and a friend and I snuck in, thanks to not looking our ages at the time.) My favorite scene involves everyone’s favorite oozey ghoul, Slimer. Rick Moranis, who is trying to join the Ghostbusters, waits for a bus. When the bus does show, Slimer is happily behind the wheel. Morains’ reaction? "Ok, but I didn’t know you had your license." ; 0 )
Batman Returns - It took me 10 years to get to the first one. God only knows how long it’ll take for me to rent the second.
Aliens - Haven’t seen it, and it all sounds a little much for me.
Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey - One of my guilty pleasures, especially considering I wasn’t crazy about the first one. How can you not love a movie where Death ends up a rock star?
Dawn of the Dead & Evil Dead II - I’m not a fan of bloody horror films, and even the non-bloody ones tend to freak me out. I have heard both these films are excellent, but I’m afraid they’re just not my cup of poison-brewed tea.
The Empire Strikes Back - Now this, I’m into. This is my favorite movie. I’m not really big on sci-fi (see "Aliens"), but I do love the "Star Wars" series. This is by far the best of them, more polished than "A New Hope," faster-paced than "Return of the Jedi," less stiff than the prequels. This is what movie-going is all about. How good is this movie? When I went to see the re-release in 1997, the entire theater collectively held its breath as Darth Vader said those fatal little words to Luke…and I actually heard some people gasp, even though everyone in the theater’s probably known Vader’s family secret since they were old enough to know who Vader and Luke are.
Gremlins 2: The New Batch - I hated the first film, so I avoided this one like the plague when it came out. Since then, I’ve heard a lot of people go on and on about how funny this movie is. Maybe I’ll eventually do what I did with "Bill & Ted" and give it another chance…

Spiderwebs! Spoooky. We have too many in our house to pretend that we don’t and are just faking it. Real spiders would move into the fake ones.

Well, since some folks are talking about the countdown, and others… spiderwebs.. I’ll talk about my computer’s mouse.  I enjoy that little rolling wheel in the middle.  Very convenient.  Oh, and I also had fun playing that tiddly winks game when I was a kid.  What joyous days those were.  I weep for the children of today who have no future, because of their inability to tiddly their winks.  Poor bastards.  That game made me the man I am today… a shallow, insignificant, drooling, sometimes smelly, handsome, renegade cop.  The method of flipping one ‘wink’ into a bowl the size of a… small bowl using only another ‘wink’ is a skill I will always use in my ordinary work day.  Alas!  Two paper clips which need to be placed back into the paper clip box!?  Tis no match for my mighty tiddlying power.  I digress… sleep comes late for those who wait.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone else had seen this one mini cartoon between commercials on nickelodeon as a kid. In the commercial there is this guy who has an egg that he is about to eat. He taps on it and the egg taps back, perplexed by the situation, the man taps back on the egg. Once again, the egg taps back. The man starts to get frustrated and taps it even harder and harder till the little person inside the egg screams as he crushes the egg into a pile of shell and goo. Afterwards he hears a knock at his door and goes to answer, but no one is there, so he walks away. There is more knocking and he goes to answer again, worried. Nobody there again, then all of a sudden his house starts pounding and pounding till his whole house is crushed in and he screams.

Anyone else see this? I used to see it durring commercials between Count Duckula. Scared the bejesus out of me at 8am in the morning. I would love it if someone could find it on one of their video cassetes.

Until I got on the Internet and until I saw the film Clerks (both at some point in the mid-90s), I honestly believed that most people thought that Return of the Jedi was the best film of the three "Original Trilogy" films. I know now that I’m one of the tiny minority that still likes RotJ better than The Empire Strikes Back; I just find the set pieces more impressive and I like happy endings (though I like happy endings with Ewoks singing a lot better than happy endings with instrumental music and test CGI shots of Coruscant if you catch my drift, George Lucas).

Though, I admit, my own preference for RotJ might be because Jedi was the only one of the "Original Trilogy" I got to see in theatres when it was new (I was 8 at the time), and, yes, I also have fond memories of all the merchandise, including Kellogg’s C-3PO’s cereal, which, miracles of miracles, actually did make it to Canadian supermarkets.

Posted by Steve Brandon @ 09/25/2003 4:20 AM EDT

For anyone that cares (*sound of crickets chirping, indicating no one*), the sequels I’d put on my list, should I ever do such a thing, that wouldn’t cross-over with Matt’s list would include Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Return of the Jedi (assuming we didn’t have to limit it only to the first sequels), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (ditto), Back to the Future Part II, Toy Story 2 and Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer (my favourite anime film of all, but it’s really obscure, even by anime standards).

The sequel I’m most excited to see on Matt’s list is Batman Returns, which I was never ashamed to admit I liked better than the first (modern) Batman film, though, actually, more because I liked the weird darkly comic version of the Christmas season than anything else in the film… for Burton Christmases, I even like it better than The Nightmare Before Christmas, which, weirdly (considering I’m a huge animation fan), I never really got enthralled by though I do admire the artistry of the film.

Posted by Steve Brandon @ 09/25/2003 5:06 AM EDT

Jeesus, Adam: that actually does sound pretty disturbing. Sorry I can’t help you with a tape or a title.

Woo! Dawn of the Dead! Woo! George Romero! Woo! *shuffle shuffle groan shuffle* Woo!

Anyway, Matt isn’t frowning in his pictures: he’s smoldering. Madd Matt? Smoldering with evil and the spirits of buried domestic pets. Muahahahahaaa! (Yeah, we just finished stuffing a hundred and fifty Halloween bags, I’m all in "the spirit" like some Oprah-watching housewife).

Posted by Molten @ 09/25/2003 6:05 AM EDT

Don’t worry Matt, Gremlins 2 has long been one of my favorite movies. When I was a kid, my mom had a list of "sick movies", movies to rent when I was sick and had to stay in bed all day. Ghsotbusters, The Goonies, Temple of Doom, Empire Strikes Back, the usual suspects were on the list. But by far my favorite was Gremlins 2. I would literally watch that movie 3 times in a row, no stopping. I’d watch the first Gremlins a lot too, but the sequel truely reigned supreme. But what REALLY surprised me was when I watched it again recently. I was expecting to be let down like I was by a lot of other childhood favorites (especially comedies), but no. It’s STILL GREAT. This is one of the pound-for-pound smartest comedies I’ve ever seen. It’s never gotten the respect it deserved, and we’ll have to change that.

By the way, I re-watched both Ninja Turtles movies the other day, and I have to say the sequel had much better martial arts action. It felt more genuine and not like guys in uncomfortable suits TRYING to fight. But I still like the first one better.

Gremlins 2, Ghostbusters 2, and Empire Strikes back are obvious inclusions.  here are the others that would go on my personal list:

Star Trek II
Nightmare on Elm Street, Part 2
Revenge of the Creature (MST3K homage)
T2
Jurassic Park 2 (for the sheer idiotically entertaining B movie aspects of it all)
The Care Bears Movie II (seriously)
Aliens
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls

i’m very glad no one brought up The Neverending Story 2.  oh bugger, i just did…

You know that part in True Romance where Christian Slater says if he just HAD to have sex with a man, if he positively was forced to and had no choice, he would pick young Elvis.  After that sequels list, Matt, you might be my choice.  Freakin Dawn of the Dead is easily one of the greatest cinematic achievements.  I’d love to talk metaphors metaphors all the live long day about that film, but I know I don’t have the audience Matt does.  And Evil Dead 2, I honestly admit I’ve yet to see a movie to make me laugh harder than that one.  And Empire Strikes Back, Yoda in that movie proved he was the A-#1 wizard in the history of cinema (sorry Gandalf, but it’s true).  And Ghostbusters 2 where Bill Murray is taking pictures of the painting, asking Vigo to model for him–ah, I’m babbling crap now, so I’ll have to concede.

There was another thing I wanted to mention though too.  I was reading the recent BooBerry article on I-Mockery and it directed me to a link of a Daily Show segment on the  cerial and for a brief second they showed a pale faced guy that I swear on the Lenin’s tomb was Madd Matt eating Boo Berry cereal.  Is this true, anybody?

And as for fake spider webs–spiders can kiss my ass because I want them all dead.  Wait a minute, no, I don’t want them kissing my ass because I freakin hate the living poison out of their bulbous buttoxes.  Kill all spiders now!  Fake spiders are just as bad.  I remember crying for the entire duration of a girl’s birthday party in pre-school because stupid boys had to keep scaring me with a giant fake tarantula.  Damn them, because that girl was so smokin’.

one of the best parts of robo 2 was the soundtrack. "the kid goes wild" performed by Babylon A.D. rocked. Babylon A.D. was a pretty good hair metal band lead by a singer known simply as "Derek" however 1990 was just to late for a hair band to start up as the "dark 90’s" of rap and grunge were decending upon us. It’s good to see hair bands enjoying a retro comeback. except for Warrant, I met Jani Lane about a year ago, what a conceded ass.

You think the king of the vampires would do one of three things:
1.  Develop a sense of humor over the years.
2.  Realize he’s not funny and stop telling retarded jokes.
3. Realize he’s not funny have someone else write his material (preferably some comedian he turned into a vampire.  That way he doesn’t have to pay him/her/it).

Damn, man, every freaking 11 list is better than the last! How do you do it?

I’ve always preferred Ghostbusters 2 myself. The scene where the bath starts pouring out "bad vibes" ooze and it tries to eat the baby? Pure cinema in all it’s glory.

I got Gremlins 2 as birthday present (13th maybe?). Another sequel that I preferred over the original. After seeing the XY/YY gremlin seduce that guy and watching the other gremlin meet the paper shredder, Zach arguing with some lady at the bank just pales in comparison.

The obligatory "How could you ignore..!" :
Desperado: Salma Hayek. Antonio Banderas. NUDITY. Nuff said.
I’d be kicked out of the family if I didn’t mention Godfather 2.

OMG, I remember that scary egg! One of us should try and compile all the bizarre shorts Nick used to air.

I know I’ve asked before, and I know it’s annoying, but here I go anyway: Matt, please please pretty please with sugar and cherries and jimmies and hot fudge on top, will you do a review of the Beetlejuice cartoon? Of all the forgotten shows of yore, it’s gotta be the one I miss the most. The Smurfs are overrated.

Adam. I soooo remember that short off of Nickelodeon. The title was The Killing of an Egg. I searched around to try to find the clip but I couldn’t. If you wanna know about anything else you used to watch, just go here.

"DUDES! I just got some Boo-Berry! My mom just got ti at the grocery today. If its in central Indiana, it ought to anywhere. And to think people thought it didn’t exist."

I think it’s seasonal, like the Halloweenie Pringles, so stock up. I’m going to take the first step toward recovery and admit that I have a problem:

I have NEVER tried Boo-Berry cereal…

Or Count Chocula.

I recall seeing the ‘Highlander’ cartoon on TV here in the US at something like four in the morning while flipping channels. All I really remember about it was a) it was reaaally boring, so i changed channels after about ten minutes and b) they had spaceships and shit, so i’m assuming it’s based on the second film (speaking of sequels) that i haven’t seen but nobody seems to like.

okay, if there’s anybody to back me up on this, shout out. I was eating Boo Berry & other artificial food products claiming to taste like blueberries long before I’d actually eaten a true blue berry. Then, one fateful day at age 13 I ate a blueberry and my world came crashing down. Blueberries have no taste, they’re like soldified water. My whole blueberry-crazed childhood I was living a lie…exactly what do they base their ‘blueberry’ tase on?

Just out of curiosity sharkie, was it a fresh or frozen blueberry? Fresh blueberries do definitely have a distinct taste. Frozen berries that have been thawed do often taste as you described, like squishy little bags filled with water.

My problems with The Two Towers movie stem mostly from the "Hour Long Elven Funeral while shoving Shelob into the third movie" scene.

To be honest, the LOTR trilogy is vastly overrated. Its pretty much just a travellogue. There’s better fantasy from the time period, and even really crappy modern fantasy is a vast improvement in writing. I have to paraphrase the Internet Film Laser Squad on this and say "To call this the greatest fantasy ever written is like calling the Model T the greatest car ever made."

In other news….

In the March wave of MOTU figures, Fisto is renamed Battle Fist for some reason(Probably trademark issues.). Still no word on whether Mattel will pull their head out of its crack and rerelease the Evil-Lyn/Whiplash wave of figures.

The TMNT movie 2 blowed compared to the first one. I went in expecting the TCRI aliens(Krang, to you simpletons who only watched the cartoon.) and instead got a washed up scientist, a catchy rap song, and rather motheaten mutant bad guys.

My chief problems with the new cartoon are twofold:

A: They never use their weapons. Its all this "spin the sword, kick." crud like on He-Man.

B: All the characters are changed to their original comics personalities, except Michelangelo. Its highly frustrating to have everyone else being serious and suddenly have someone make a joke about pizza. You have to start wondering if maybe Mikey is retarded or was dropped on his head as an infant.

Alright, reading down the list of comments, further comments need to be made.

The Highlander animated series was okay. It was basically a post-apocalypse cartoon. For some reason or another, the remaining Immortals swore to never touch a sword again. The one Immortal who didn’t join in the ritual conquers the world. The son of the Highlander and his sister go on a quest to free the world with Ramirez’ help. Interesting idea, so-so animation. Significant as it was one of the few action cartoons on in the era of Bobby’s World. Personally, I think Xyber-9 was a better execution of the idea. Too bad that at the time Fox Kids only gave shows 3 episodes in which to succeed before canning them.

Care Bears the Movie 2 was nowhere near as good as the first one. I mean, sure it had a more coherent villain, but the continuity from when they were babies to suddenly being adults raises disturbing questions about whether Care-A-Lot is a place in the world or a whole other dimension. Serious continuity errors abounded.

Movie that should never be on the list: My Little Pony 2:Escape From Katrina

Short Circuit 2: Why do they always have this compulsion to stage sequels "In the big city"?

Adam: For "The Cat Came Back" I was going to recommend that you try the animation section of the National Film Board store, but, while it’s featured on several VHS tapes, including this one, hosted by Leonard Maltin, who appeared in Gremlins 2, to make this slightly less off-topic (that tape also has "The Hockey Sweater", now featured on the back of the $5 bill), "The Cat Came Back" still isn’t on any NFB DVDs. In fact, the NFB has only produced 4 DVDs total, and one of those is a DVD-ROM!

In times like these, I like to call the National Film Board a taxpayer-funded Liberal Party boondoggle, waaayyyyy behind the times when it comes to home video technology…

Hey steve, i found a legit copy of The cat Came Back on Kazaa. Woot! Now im looking for other ones currently.

dunno, that was 10 years ago and I’ve forgotten almost everything from then, but I’d have to opt for the frozen ones based on what you described. Still, I’m pretty sure BooBerry is artificially flavored anyway.

For anybody in search of the almighty Boo Berry, check your local Wal-Mart or Wal-Mart SuperCenter, if you have one in your area.  I don’t know about the rest of the country, but here in central Arkansas they sell it year ’round at Wal-Mart SuperCenter, along with Count Chocula and Frankenberry!
