05/26/2003: More 80s Commercials Added!

BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT! After months of inactivity and disarray, X-E’s 80s Commercials Downloads Center is back in business, with over thirty new files. I spent an ungodly amount of time sprucing up the index page, so it’s all a little prettier now. Check it out.

Loads of stuff going on at the moment, I’m uncharacteristically overwhelmed. I don’t say ‘uncharacteristically’ to be egotistical — I just rarely have anything going on. The gig for the Delaware paper is going pretty well…haven’t been canned yet, so I guess that means it’s being received by their readers okay. I did a little digging around their site, and oddly enough, you should be able to pick up the News Journal in some parts of PA and NJ. That’s not the real big news, though. I won’t tell you about the ‘real big news’ until it’s officially real big news, but rest assured, it’s really big news.

Man, oh man, do I love commercials! From regular commericals to info-mercials, I love em all! I always thought it would be cool for them to have a 24/7 commerical channel. I’d watch it. You betcha I would!

Any chance that the newspaper is available online via a webpage, for those of us who live a little too far away?

At least give us a hint about the real big news. I hate not knowing stuff, even if it probably has no direct bearing on me.

Travie Yak, up here in Canada, we do have an all infomerical channel, called, um, well Infomercial Channel. It’s not that good though. Most of the time it the "Get Rich in 10 Days with Real Estate". Occasionally you get to see buddy crush 24 CANS at a time, with a sealer that contains the suckage of a blackhole. Now a channel of 30-60 seconds commercials from the past would be sweet though.

YEAH-HA More Commercials!! This place is so great for this stuff.

Matt coulkd you get the Gravedale High intro video working I watched the show as a kid anbd would like to see it again.

Does anybody remember the Toilet Duck commercials? cuz they would be awesome to see again.

Ghosted by Toilet Duck Fan @ 05/27/2003 1:51 AM EDT

Oh yeah toilet duck that was cool. Where do I begin… my 2 cousins who are around your age had those coleco tabletop games. One of them had Pac Man and the other had Glaxia. When I was little (about 2) I believed that if you ate Bonkers candy fruit would fall on your head, so I ate the candy covering my head. Around that age too I would sing the Pops commercial. I have some of those Chipmunks figures but I don’t remember the commercial. I forgot about how goofy those Mc Nuggets were. My cousin had a Cricket doll and she put a Monkees tape in it and the mouth opened when the music played. Pound Puppies are cool too. I have 3.

P.S. Hey Matt do you have any of those Pocket Rockers or Ring Pop commercials? I love to make fun of how goofy those kids look and act. Are you going to post more? I know they take a lot of bandwith.

Dear God your power server is going to explode after everyone downloads all the videos :(

Have you ever thought of putting as many of your commercials, as you can, on Kazaa for a day? A nostalgic artificial intelligence of the future will appreciate the early effort.

I only downloaded the DC Superhero Create A Villain contest to see if it could run on Real One Player instead of the accursed Windows Media Player which I downloaded the update once and got my computer crashed on, afterwhich I will never download anything from Microsoft because IT DOESN’T WORK!

Anyway, after opening Real One Player separately and opening the file through that, it worked. It was kinda weird seeing the major players Super Friends selling a bogus cereal contest. My mother was watching it and thought it was a real commercial, until I told her it was from 1983.

Excuse me, but the pervert in me wants to check out the Underoos commercial now. :)

must…hear…big..news. but that’s cool tho this site is some of the best entertainment around better than television, hopefully the big news will have somethin to do with your talents reaching a much broader audience, just remember to always update the site every once in a while!

Thanks for putting these commercials up. They bring back so many memories. This is the only site I’ve seen to do anything like this, especially on such a big scale, and especially for free, so thanks.

Damn, I completly forgot about Stretch Armstrong. I still own Stretch’s villian, Vac-Man I believe his name is. His big and red and, when you pump the air out of him, stays in his stretched posistion.

Good work, Matt. If you ain’t a god, your at least demi-god.

Do you have anymore Rainbow Brite commercials besides the cereal?

Also… unrelated…

You did an article on those little figures for guys and girls… the little mini muscle women dealies… so I was thinking. You know those creepy new "Diva Stars" dolls? They are ripped off the Blythe dolls… although those are from the 70’s. Girly yes… but also tacky and creepy. The fact that the prices for an good condition, original Kenner Blythe are ranging from 1,000 ~ 3,000 bucks makes them pretty hilarious too.

I want one so bad… *weep*

whoa that takes me back to when I was like 3 man lol! I remember I used to eat that smurf cereal religiously….oddly enough I dont remember anything bout smurfs lol! Whoa chuckie cheese was even creepier back then… Hey does anyone remember somethin like Chuckie Cheese called ShowBiz? Basically the same thing only they had creepier robots like Billy Bob the bear and Mitzie the mouse. I used to have nightmares cuz my parents took me there all the time lol! Oh cant wait to hear big news…:D

Matt, you….are….a….god!! I’m seriously thinking about starting up an official religion where we all worship our god Matt so we can get tax breaks.

Sweet! I here must raise a hand as only watching the Super Bowl for the commercials. I’m up at my grandparents and their computer doesn’t support .wmv files despite the fact their comp is like ten times faster than mine, but as soon as I get home it’s time to eat some hard-drive space!

Thanks for putting the Zelda commercial at the BOTTOM of the page, by the way. That guy is just creepy, and your shot of him is him in his creepiest pose and voice. "Blargablargablarga… TeehK-tites!!"

Ghosted by Freezair @ 05/27/2003 2:06 PM EDT

Nice stuff, the Coleco games brought back memories (especially of the one when I took my Donkey Kong one apart looking for the non-existant power supply port that the instructions said it had..).

Any chance of Pencil Pets showing up in either commercial or article form? :)

Ghosted by Lynx @ 05/27/2003 2:20 PM EDT

Ghahhh! I had a Cricket! She was Demonic. Espeically when I put Guns N’ Roses tapes in her. Creepy.

Ghosted by Otaku Queen @ 05/27/2003 2:30 PM EDT

Swear to God, I’m working on a huge ball of Big League Chew right now. Grape. Yes, yes, yes Transformers. Man-E-Faces, I hate you. No man needs three faces. Greedy bastard. Oooh, Centurions, I love you. I had a Stretch Armstrong. He’s full of corn syrup. Tastes great. Go-Bots, BOOO! Hey, anyone else laugh at the name "Drag King"?

Ghosted by Bansheex @ 05/27/2003 3:10 PM EDT

while i was cleaning out my parents house this weekend, i stumbled upon a box of my old toys…in them contained a massive battalion of gi joes and some transformers…i dont know anything about toys nowadays but im guessing there worth money…anyway i just watched that transformers commercial and noticed i have that lion transformer!

Ghosted by Peter @ 05/27/2003 3:14 PM EDT

Love the commercials, Matt!
Thanks for straining your bandwidth for us.
I’m also guessing the big news isn’t site related, it deals with your personal life… that’s my guess anyways.

Ghosted by Raechel @ 05/27/2003 3:21 PM EDT

I am operating under the assumption that the big news will be similar to the last, as in you getting another good break into the world of paid writing and/or wider exposure:

Congrats! Whatever the venture, I’m sure it will be successful, and I send ten thousand winged good luck prayers your way.

If my assumption is incorrect, disregard.

Say, what’s that sound? Well I’ll be! Do I hear wedding bells?

Ghosted by :) @ 05/27/2003 4:28 PM EDT

Here in Canada we not only had Chuckie Cheese until not too long ago (I think we managed to exterminate the last of them), we also had a terrible copycat venture called BULLWINKLES! That’s right, an entire restaurant of rigged games, crappy prizes and terrible pizza, themed around a moose and flying squirrel. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen robot Rocky sing happy birthday.

I hate that moose. And this restaurant was around before the recent surge in popularity of those characters.

Wow…okay, when I was really young, my family went on a trip to Niagara Falls, with a stop off in Canada. Me, being obsessed with Canada due to the cool flag and national theme as found on C64’s ‘Summer Olympics,’ was all for it. I remember very little about the trip, but now that you mention it, I distinctly recall ‘Bullwinkle’s.’ Amazing. :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 05/27/2003 7:46 PM EDT

Bullwinkles rocks!! If we still had it here I would still go there!!

Ghosted by KoNaX @ 05/27/2003 9:01 PM EDT

Yeah, Liquidduck, It would be cool if they had a channel full of 30-60 minute commericals, especially old ones. I recentlly switched from Analog Cable to Digital Cable, and even though I got a shitload of new channels, I didnt get no commerical channel from Canada. Oh well.

Speaking of the commericals, thanks a bunch Matt, for all the new commericals indeed! Talk about memories, I remember owning a Stretch Armstrong, and I accidentlly broke it open. Yeah, that was great, with all the elastic whatever goo getting all over the rug. Damn you Stretch Armstrong for getting me in trouble! Damn You! Damn You Straight To Hell! BAW GAWD!

I’m hoping the news is about some sort of book that is similar to what this godly site continues to be.

Does anyone remember a three-part anti-drug movie from 1989 called Straight Up? I had to watch this in P.E. class. The main character was some kid who looked like Corey Haim (but it wasn’t him). He was taken on various adventures by a guy in a psychedelic-looking robe named Cosmo. The kid had to face various temptations from people named after drugs (i.e. one character was called Booze, another was named Pot, etc.). The drug characters looked like members of Marilyn Manson. The movie’s best feature was a headband that Cosmo gave to the kid/hero. The headband would recite crucial information about drugs when the kid was being tempted. At one point, Booze and Pot stole the headband, fought over it, and sang a duet called "Give Me That Headband." Yes, that movie is my one fond memory from elementary school P.E.

Straight Up starred 80’s superstar Chad Allen.

I believe Gwildor said it best, "No Kevin. There is only one of you, only one of any of us".
At least that is what I think he said. Japanese synthesizer, my ass!
