05/21/2003: Who Was Photog?

Off in the far corners of Masters of the Universe lore lies Photog, the action figure Mattel ‘forgot’ to make. The character was a creation of a kid named Nathan Bitner – the winner of a grand contest where children plied their trade at drawing their own MOTU figure. According to the (disregarded) rules, Nathan was to have his figure forged by the thousands and put out for a national release. For whatever reason, it never happened. My best guess is that the character itself wouldn’t lend itself to easy production using older molds, and Mattel didn’t believe the extra money necessary to make Photog work was worth the risk. That’s pure speculation of course, but if true, it’s pretty silly. Nathan was eleven-years-old at the time of the contest – if anyone knew what kind of action figures kids wanted, I’d say it was him.

But who knows? Maybe Mattel found out he cheated or something. These days, Photog is about as obscure as it gets, and nobody really knows what happened to the poor guy. The only documentation available came on the last page of the Spring ‘86 issue of The Masters of the Universe Magazine, so today, we take a look back at that article and try to piece together this incredibly pointless mystery. It’s time we found out the truth. Who was Photog?

Believe it or not, the article fills in a lot of blanks. I was just expecting a few congratulatory remarks, and maybe some Nathan-brand quotes where he talks about how Orko is such a funny guy. Apparently, Nathan was awarded a scholarship for 100,000 dollars, plus a five-day trip to California. I dunno, sounds like hush money to me. I can just picture some shady Mattel exec offering the wad of dough to Nathan’s family before putting one of those iconic black mouse caps on his head, asking if he’d ever been on Space Mountain. In a flurry of confusion and newfound greed, everyone started signing papers until Photog’s promised production was null and void. If that’s the case, I hope Nathan had fun at Disneyland. Actually wait, no I don’t – that’d mean he screwed the world out of Photog. That blows. I hope the fine print read that the scholarship could be paid out in Monopoly money. Stupid kid.

On Photog, Nathan adds: “I thought the idea of making my character with camera features would be neat.” Sounds like something they made him say, all the while waving 100K checks and VIP passes to Epcot which didn’t even make sense since Epcot’s in Florida. That’s his only quote in the article, so I guess he’s about as good of an interview as Tara Reid.

Photog’s power was said to be the ability to ‘focus in’ on his enemies before draining their strength. The silhouettes shown on his chestplate are pictures of his fallen foes, proving Photog both a sadist and a pretty skilled photographer. The article closes out with a detailed list of Nate’s hobbies, but I stopped reading after I got to ‘doing puzzles’ since no hobby will ever top THAT. Even though the figure never made it to stores, the kid took in a hundred grand and a week-long date with Mickey for spending a few hours with paper and magic markers. I’d say that’s a decent haul. I’m sure the enthusiastic customs artist might be able to make a Photog figure – I’d try it myself, but I’m not a customs artist and I’m usually too busy trying to figure out a way to make plastic edible. That’s the story of Photog. I never said it was going to be long.

I am going to have to say that we stand behind him, because if this blog has taught me one thing its that if you get in the way of "THE BITNER" you will be destroyed

What happened to the kid?! Did he grow up a hollow shell of a man, his Photog stripped before his very eyes to the candy cane dreams and happy time adventures only offered by a 6 foot tall rat in bibs?! Was is YEARS of psychiatric care to the realization that the corporate machine wants us to be mindless creatures giving into their every whim with hands stuffed with crinkled bills ready to throw them before the tall alter of HeMan?!

Pft I say! PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT!

Hey… you know, that does sound pretty cool! o_O

That’s what happened!

Just figured I’d post this anyway.

Been following the Bitner Blog since it’s inception, never posted.

I just figured I’d try simple things, see what happens. Took the name Bitner and Naperville and googled them, gives me a John Bitner who works in the town of Naperville, IL as a vice president for a packaging company, also gives me a 54 year old John Bitner who participates in quite a few 5k runs. The 54 year old John Bitner has his hometown listed as Glen Elyn, IL. Since I’m from NY, I have no clue how far apart those two towns are, so I mapped them. I just used the two addresses that they give me as center points for the two towns, and I come up with an 11 mile difference between the two, which gives good credibility that there is a Bitner family, still living in the Naperville area, with a man who is of proper age to be Nathan’s father.

Also, came up with a link to an about.com page which says that Naperville, IL is ,statisically according to the US Census, home to more families whose children live out their dreams.

The Jays,

"Also, came up with a link to an about.com page which says that Naperville, IL is ,statisically according to the US Census, home to more families whose children live out their dreams."

I don’t know why but that quote made me laugh. I think that its entirely possible that the 54 old bitner could be "The Bitner’s" Father. Maybe we should see if we could contact him.

Did anyone ever notice that it takes everyone three hours to read this entire blog?

Just thought that was interesting.

It took me like 3-4 days. Off and on of course. But long none the less

I’m an old friend of Nathan’s, and that long post earlier was indeed his. I was with him in Jr. High when he won the award, and I’ve been razzing him about it ever since. I lost saw him in the Winter of 2003-04, shortly after he returned from Iraq. In the year since, his e-mail address and cell phone are "disconnected". Could be due to blogs like this…if anyone has any info, please let me know. I suppose he could be in the Atlanta area now…last phone number I had for him was a 919 area code.

Greetings all, and a belated, but heartfelt birthday greeting to PFC Bitner, may you come home safe, and not get mobbed to death by us fanboys (and girls). Sure, we sometimes like to take the piss out of you, but in a weird way, you and your childhood creation have enriched our lives, and we are thankful for it :-)

Well, I made it.
After first seeing this thread the day after it was posted, and not checking on it again until now (over a year later), I fell like my head is going to implode like a coke can in a vacuum chamber.

I have just spent the last 10 hours (minus the half hour I attempted to go to sleep, but to no avail, thoughts of Bitnermania drew me back in without a wink.) reading the saga that is Photog, begat of Bitner. I have read every single post, skipping none, and visited every working link. And my mind has been blown. I never thought that anything on X-Entertainment could top the review of that god-awful demonic Swanson Hungry Man frozen hell on a sectioned platter, but BOY WAS I WRONG.

This goes down in history as the greatest blog posting of all time.
This has become an internet culture LEGEND.

You have surpassed Fark’s pickle incident.
You have surpassed SomethingAwful’s P-P-P-Powerbook.

Matt, with your simple post, ending in "That’s the story of Photog. I never said it was going to be long.", you have created a phenomenon that grew to a 200+ page epic. I don’t even know the real number of pages this has become, as when I pasted it into Word to find out, it crashed the sonofabitch.
THAT’S how big this is!

We have heard the tale of a man who was inspired, then betrayed, who worked with a highly successful company, and then spiraled downwards, only to triumphantly rise up again like a phoenix from the ashes and become a man who saves peoples lives in a time of need. And somehow, through some strange twist of fate, he has also become an internet legend.

So, on this day, five days after blessed Bitnermass, I would like to wish all who posted here well,
especially the big B himself.
This has truly been a fuckin’ blast.
Viva Matt!
Viva Photog!
Viva la Bitnerlution!

Wise fwum yo gwave!

Anyway, it has been nearly two years after the so-called “Bitner” posted here, and I still maintain that he isn’t the real deal.

Discuss.

All I wanna say is, reading the photog blog was one of the coolest experiences I have encountered on the internet. It’s been awhile since I read about our wonderful pal Nathan Bitner, but I remember the last time I did it took me 3 days. I remember feeling so sad when I link did’nt work, laughing really hard at everyones funny, witty, and, great haiku comments. And hey, I also figured out who he hell Heather Ramage was. But… now I forgot. What I’m trying to say is, this blog was like a great novel you wanna read over and over. Honestly I could care less about Nathan Bitner, it was reading peoples thoughts, feelings and personalities that I found the most interesting.

Thanks for the great read!

I would also like to admit, that for most of the time I was reading the blog, I thought it was Binter not Bitner. How I wish I could read and write :P

Alright, now I consider myself a bonafide X-Er.

Maybe it’s possible that Photog was not a good idea. A camera head figure???

Here’s X-E’s entry, with this blog mentioned:

And here’s where you can put it:

And maybe one for Photog himself:

I sure wish we could confirm somehow if that was the real Nathan Bitner or not. I’m glad it is open again, perhaps now that we are little older, alittle wiser, we can finally solve the mystery.

I agree with Manimal. Now I’m bonafide! Posting on the Photog blog is like getting an oficial X-E Membership Card. For more information send $2 in a SASE to Pueblo, Colorado. Care of Nathan Bitner.

Okay. It’s now 1:42 A.M. EST on November 3rd. I started reading about the saga of Nathan Bitner at around 11 PM, after randomly finding out about the blog on Wikipedia’s entry for X-E. As soon as I read the story, I knew I had to find out the truth… Now here it is, nearly three hours later, and I’m absolutely floored. I’ve become witness to a blogging phenomenon like I’d never imagined… and let me say that if I hadn’t found out that Mr. Bitner himself responded, I would have been reading the comments on this blog all night.

So here I am, leaving my little mark on one of the most incredible internet stories I’ve ever read. Who knows? Maybe someday, years from now, somebody will track tasakeru828 down to this very site. Thanks, guys. Your dedication is something to be proud of.

I just spent WAY too much time skim reading this monster of a blog after reading about it on XE’s Wikipedia page (I’ve been sporadically reading XE for a few years, but never noticed this).
My brain now hurts, my eyes feel like they’re going to bleed and I feel that a large wadge of useful information has forever been replaced in my mind with terrifying facts about Nathan Bitner and the Fearless Photog.
God I love the internet.

Boy I hope this gets posted where people can read it…
Anyway, my sister and I entered that very same contest! Multiple times! There was no limit on submissions, so we each drew like ten or fifteen charactors each! How did we do? HOW’S SECOND PLACE, SUCKAS! That’s right, we won second- a prize I still have to this day- THE FRIGHT ZONE! I have never waited longer for something to arrive in the mail in my life. They reeeealy stretched that whole “6-8 weeks” thing to its limit, let me tell you. As for the finalists (waitaminit- how could we win second if there was… four first places? huh?! that never dawned on me before!), it appeared that the picturs we saw of them, including the rediculous Photog (no sour grapes there- just LOOK at him!) were re-mastered by an artist at Mattel, as they all had the “official” action figure box-art look to them. I thought the guy who was just a big eyeball should have won.
Oh, yeah, and Mattel totally stole one of my sister’s ideas- Spikor is the spitting image of “Sharp-Man” (hey, she was like four at the time)!

This thread is _still_ going on? Holy geez.

A not-so-kind review of Josette’s appearance on the daytime edition of _Who Wants To Be A Millionaire_ is here:
http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/lofiversion/index.php/t5489.html
Apparently, for this reviewer, the categories in the Miss America pageant is required knowledge for any cultured person. Screw him (or her).

I saw Josette often last year; we were intermittent teachers (dance for her, elementary for me) at an elementary school in Brooklyn. She appears to still be with the USO in Manhattan (http://www.usony.org/meettroupe.shtml).

So we came to the conclusion that nobody claiming to be Nathan came here? Sigh, I guess we will never know…

Then again, is the mystery the thing that draws all back here to check ever so often to see if there has been a conclusion?

Ghosted by Erik Majorwitz @ 06/04/2007 5:58 AM EDT

Wow – long time XE lurker, but never really noticed this crazy post until today. I just wanted to comment and say how much the ‘plot’ of Nathan’s story is totally like this book ‘To Die For’ by Catherine Jinks (i.e. same plot starting with a person on the Internet wanting to find some randomer and then resulting in big crazy stalkage lol). The ending is hardly the same but still.
Anyway, kudos – and RIP BitnerBlog.

….man, that was weird. but seriously, get Mattel to make a Master’s Classics version of Photog. I mean, they could just say that he got trapped in the Bizzaro-Universe for a few decades, and hung out with Bizzaro-Debbie from Sealab 2021.

If anyone cares I was a semi-finalist in the now infamous MOTU Create-A-Character Contest! I got a spiffy letter (which my jealous brother ripped up) and a brown box containing the Evil Horde “Fright Zone” playset! YAY!!! Happy 6th Anniversary!

Did the real Nathan Bitner ever show up? Thanks for the update Chris. It’s nice to know what he’s up to.

I’m very sorry I never followed through showing the movie. Life got in the way. Currently it’s sitting on an old hardrive at a friends house. Maybe we’ll post it on YouTube. For some weird reason I feel it needs to be seen. Nathan Bitner must live on.

And finally I will end this post with one of my favourite quotes I still use to this day.

I just came across this article and WOW! Not only do i remember this contest and photag but i was in the contest and they created my character without giving me any credit! I made a figure called Long Nose which was an orange he-man character with an elephant head. I received a man-at-arms magnet in the mail saying sorry you didnt win and then a few months later i see Long Nose on the He-Man Xmas Special. A few weeks later the figure was released under the name Snout Spout!!!! I am still bitter about this after over 20 years but loved to see the article about Photag. I believe the other co-winner or runner up was a figure called Netta that turned into a net!
