Is it… It is! Gummy Bears!
Is that a He-Man figure?
I had a Go-Bots!
That’s one hell of a viewmaster. Connect Four was probably the only game I could beat my parents at.
Have no clue what that next one is.
The Bernstein Bears had Happy Meals Toys? Did they have Clifford toys as well?
Dude, that Glo-Worm is bigger then me!
Robotech, never had one.
Galmor Doll, never had one.
Is that the pre-concept of Bananas in Pajamas.
My sister had an Upsy Baby.
Remember all that recent hype on the Sci-Fi Channal for Firestarter 2? That movie sucked.
Fluppy Puppies, never had any.
Fun Fruits, never had them.
What is that? An Etch-A-Sketch video game.
Cookie Crisp was the only thing I would eat when I was four. I would refuse to eat anything else.
Come to McDonald’s. Eat Bloody Shit.
Care Bears a like cuttier Ewoks. I must eat them all.
Claire!
The View Master looks like it has gone all Cujo. And speaking of Cujo, I haven’t read any Stephen King or heard any hype about him since I was a teenager (dismissing that time that he was struck by a van — he doesn’t get credit for accidents). And is that Rudy Cosby pushing Glow Worms?
I had the Mop Top Hair Shop: it was actually pretty fun, especially when dried up play doh crudded up the holes and started making the dolls grow the punkiest punk dos that ever did punk.
I remember liking Ice Cream Cones (despite the stupid Ice Cream Jones mascot) more than Cookie Crisp, but being disappointed that it wasn’t more vanilla-y.
Care Bear cousins: interestingly enough, the non-inbred end of the Care Gene Pool. Note the phenotypic expression of individuality beyond their chest icons.

ok… so toxicity in another blog post made me remember this…. maybe you guys will too. it was kinda like the G.U.T.S. guys, and monsters in my pocket. It was called… the garbage bag bunch… or something like that. the gimmick was you didn’t know which one you got until you put the trashbag in water, and disolved it… someone has to remember these guys.
That viewmaster pic looks like the ill-fated ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ viewmaster set, fine until you get to the pic of the damn open Ark.
Melted a lot of nazi kids though.
Get to see a pretty lady for a few seco…
Are these pictures a preview of forthcoming additions to the commercial downloads section?
I hope so.
Ghosted by Ubu Rex @ 05/19/2003 1:09 PM EDT
I had those trash bag toys. They were nifty, disolving in water in such. I hate that whole toxic thing toy companies went through in the early 90’s…so…h’m…i dunno where im going with this-
These are old adverts aren’t they? I’m sure as hell Cookie Crisp has only recently come to the shops in the UK. Is it the same thing? I’ll give you a clue… It just tastes like the kind of healthy cereal crap my mum eats, but it is disguised by FAKE choc chips, that you cannot taste at all!!! Oh, and advertised by some really annoying cartoon wolf that howls when he says coooookie. Hilarious. Or not.

Okay, maybe it’s just be but the thing in the 11th pic that looks like an anthropomorphic bananna kind of reminds me of Peter Griffin from Family Guy.
Ghosted by Rick @ 05/19/2003 2:19 PM EDT
I auctually had some of those Bearenstein Bear toys from McDonalds.
Ghosted by Josh @ 05/19/2003 2:36 PM EDT
Random coincidence…at lunch today, one of my friends (female, thankfully) had a Care Bears sticker/coloring book. They’re back from the dead, apparently.
I still have some of those McDonalds Bearenstein Bear things. What should I do with them!?!
Ghosted by Diana @ 05/19/2003 2:52 PM EDT
I actually had those horrible Bearenstein Bears books. I mean come ON!! When I was that age, I didn’t know what the hell the word "Snappy" meant…
I also thought that white people only existed on TV…
Is that a Frosta action figure? I just recently found my old She-Ra figure. Apparently I gave her a hair cut so now she looks like a skinny pale Don King. Woe is me…
For Mr. Mr. Mr. the sixth pic that you stated you did "Have no clue what that next one is" is, of course, Voltron. I remember back in 1985, I was told that I was getting one for Christmas and after 18 years I’m still waiting for it. That is one thing I hate about getting older, you finally have the money to buy all the toys you wanted when you were younger, but you’re looked at like a freak from family and friends if you display any of the toys around the house. I guess you call this ‘guilty pleasure’.
Ghosted by Liquidduck @ 05/19/2003 3:43 PM EDT
I can remember the Voltron cartoon when the blue member was "seriously" injured in battle, I cried. Voltron’s star faded too soon, when the princess became the pink lion, that was that.
Ghosted by DaDaDandy @ 05/19/2003 4:42 PM EDT
Diana, Bin ‘em. They are probably worth about 3p.
Ghosted by Nina @ 05/19/2003 4:57 PM EDT
What is that purple seal at the bottom, it kinda looks like a my little pony spin off or something.
Oh and the anthropomorphic bananna is really an anthropomorphic fruit pie. He helps kids out with his magic powers and fatty snacks. He’s David Blane meets Dave Thomas.
Heh, I actually remember about 80% of the commercials for those toys, and I actually owned that G.I. Joe hovercraft/boat, as well as Voltron, and even a couple of GoBots, although I wasn’t too fond of GoBots, cause they seemed to me like a cheap ass Transformers rip-off. One question, what is that really cool lookin’ etch-a-sketch thingy called? If I remember correctly, a kid could use that thing to create different frames, or pictures, then put them together into an animated sequence. That’s one of the toys that I wanted as a youngster, but sadly, never had the joy of owning….:-P

Ah! I’d forgotten about that bit. Probably better that I don’t have my grubby paws on one now; I’d spend all of my free time animating x-rated etch-a-sketch doodles.
Ghosted by Molten @ 05/19/2003 6:21 PM EDT
Ha Ha Ha. I remember most of that stuff, even the Sweet Sea doll oddly enough. Oh, life in the 80’s.. wasn’t it great?
Ghosted by JerM @ 05/19/2003 6:29 PM EDT
Hey, I had that Go-Bot. He isn’t that tall, though. Yay, Voltron cameo! Voltorn could kick the bejezus out of any Megazord. So there!
Ghosted by Bansheex @ 05/19/2003 6:44 PM EDT
The happy little guy on the bottom is a "Snugglebum." No, really, thats what they’re called.
Ghosted by RolfesAngel @ 05/19/2003 7:01 PM EDT
Voltron, oh baby…Voltron assembled was big enough that you didn’t just play with him, you hung out with him. Getting him was a real project too; save up for a yellow lion here, recieve a red lion there, beg for a pilot inbetween, and get promised the black lion for birthday/christmas.
Ghosted by Krappy Kat @ 05/19/2003 7:35 PM EDT
I would love to see a commercial pic and/or review about Magic Nursery Babies. Kind of a cabbage patch rip-off, I suppose, but with an added twist. You didn’t know if you bought a boy or girl until you dumped the baby’s hat into water and it would dissolve into the birth certificate (like the trash-bin whatchacallit’s mentioned above.)
Of all the toys I spent my childhood pining for, Magic Nursery Babies were numero uno.
Ghosted by squee4242 @ 05/19/2003 7:47 PM EDT
That blue/purple fuzzy-backed thing is CREEPY! But the CB Cousins… oh, I used to love everything Care Bear and the cousins were my favorite! Best of all was the purple penguin with a heart wearing a Santa hat on his stomach… wha was he called?
Ghosted by Freezair @ 05/19/2003 8:14 PM EDT
The Trash Bag Bunch was such a cool toy they were so cool you dumped the trash bag in water and once it disolved there was a toy. HOW COOL IS THAT? I Wish I could find some just to do that again. I had about six of em still do.
Here’s a site that has pics of the good guys the Disposers and the bag guys the Trashers.
We need X-E to show the Toilet Duck commercials they were the bet thing ever. Especially when Toilet Duck went "Quack, Quack" as he nucked the scum with his tank or plane. I’df kill to see those commercials again!
Ghosted by Toilet Duck Fan @ 05/19/2003 9:48 PM EDT
Oh man, I had that Voltron thing and a couple of those Robotech figures and that G.I. Joe hovercraft thing. The only commercial I remember directly from there is that McDonald’s one though. Not the happy mean one but the other one. What happened to all those other characters they used to have on those commercials? Birdy, the Fry Guys, that professor whats-his-face-type-guy in the picture, and the rest.. They must have killed them off or something.. I miss them..
Ghosted by Toxicity- @ 05/19/2003 9:54 PM EDT
er.. Happy Meal… not mean
Ghosted by Toxicity- @ 05/19/2003 9:55 PM EDT
In the Glow baby ad (of which my dad bought me one, even though I thought I was too old for it), is that Keisha Knight-Pullian (pardon my slaughtering her name) (the youngest Cosby kid).
Also, Matt, I’d love to see something about Trapper Keepers back in the day…some friends and I were discussing them and one had no clue about them, and we were unable to find ANYTHING about old school 80s Trapper Keepers, and you have an uncanny ability to dig up anything and everything.
Ghosted by Raechel @ 05/20/2003 1:59 AM EDT
maaan i remember that animator thing (#16) if it’s the same thing i remember.
a couple of kids in school had one i always wanted one but they were like $100 or somethin, way out of my league and i guess i didn’t want to waste a x-mas on it.
i remember it bein called ‘the animator’ but i’m sure it had a more original name.
i am proud to say that i am still an owner of the etch-a-sketch animator. unfortunately i could never actually make anything that looked remotely interesting.

Oh. My. God. Where in the blue hell do you find this stuff? Jebus, all I need now is for that Nerds cereal to pop up.
And Firestarter, I remember when that movie was filmed. Back home in Wilmington, NC. *sniff* Good times.
Ghosted by Tron @ 05/20/2003 11:12 AM EDT
Tron, I’ve actually done a full article on Nerds Cereal. Search for ‘nerds’ on the front page of X-E.
As for encoding these, in due time. Right now the commercials page is a bit of a mess, and the hosting charges associated with it are pretty high. Trying to think of a good way to put up more without spending hundreds extra a month.

Small suggestion Matt, so take it or leave it, why dont you delete some of the older ones off the server ad then replace them?
Ghosted by CalmingEffect @ 05/20/2003 2:31 PM EDT
crap, I can’t beleive another of Matt’s creations has pushed me to geek out like this, but … that is a picture of the Cobra swamp boat, the Water Moccasin and trusty pilot, Copperhead, and not the G.I. Joe Killer WHALE hovercraft. Its the little boat you got when your parents refused to pay fifty dollars for the big one. Both were cool, but its was the hovercraft that I remember most kids would trade a pinky for. It was the biggest G.I. Joe vehicle there was, until the Air Craft Carrier came out the next year. And NO BODY got that one, digital sacrifice or no, except one kid that lived to far for your folks to drive you to on a regular basis, and he was kind of a dick any way.

Also could you fix the link for the Gravedale High opening I’d like to see it.

I was kind of wondering when someone would notice about the Water Moccasin, too. It wasn’t the Aircraft Carrier, but it was a few bucks well spent anyway
God that thing was huge; would it not make a totally bitchin’ coffee table?
Ghosted by Krappy Kat @ 05/20/2003 7:37 PM EDT
Is it just me, or does that glo-worm look like it could eat keshia knight pulliam? That’s the biggest freaking glo-worm I have ever seen! Yeah, that’s the name of that G.I. Joe boat, the water moccasin! Very cool toy! I’m just wondering if and when Matt will put some stuff up about those kick ass M.A.S.K. toys, anyone remember those? Heh, I remember watching that cartoon show when I was a kid, along with G.I. Joe, and the Transformers, and Voltron! Man, those were the days!
Awesome, those pictures make me sad though, I kinda liked living back there in the eighties. Course I never got the new toys though..always had to settle for second rate.
Great job though!

My Voltron watches over me on the top shelf of my dorm room desk.
That toy weighs close to 5 pounds… I used to threaten my older sister with it when she pissed me off.
"I’m telling Mom!"
"If you tell Mom, I’m gonna throw Voltron at you."
"Oh…um…nevermind."
Defender of the Universe indeed.
Ghosted by Toxic Oreo @ 05/21/2003 11:48 AM EDT
That isn’t a picture from Firestarter, that’s a snapshot after Drew realized somebody ran off with her coke…
And the kid in the Cookie Crisp commercial looks like he’s opened a cereal bowl-version of Pandora’s Box (or a gateway to Hell).
Peanut Butter Boppers? I think somebody’s got a X-rated website about just that sort of thing…
Ghosted by XP Ranger @ 05/21/2003 5:41 PM EDT
The penguin Care Bear cousin was named Cozy Heart…the rest were Brave Heart Lion, Bright Heart Raccoon, Gentle Heart Lamb, Lotsa Heart Elephant, Loyal Heart Dog, Playful Heart Monkey, Proud Heart Cat, Swift Heart Rabbit, Treat Heart Pig and Noble Heart Horse. That information and more can be found here: http://members.citynet.net/weluvcarebears/carebearcousins.htm
I’ve never typed the word "heart" so much in my life.
