New Article: You guys got an early look at the Slimer gum, but I felt that there was enough material there to warrant a full article. Click here to read it. Also includes information on Slimer’s cereal, fruit snacks, and yes – Ecto Cooler.

What about that stupid video game where you manage the GB team and buy cars and accesories like the hood-mounted ghost vacuum? It came out on apple IIe right before slimermania. It’s not slimer-centric.

I thought that Jack’s balls were seen in that Three’s Company episode? Either way they have since edited the problem out.

I loved Ecto-Cooler and the Real Ghostbusters. I really did not lose interest until they changed the cartoon from the nice DIC animation to the crap DIC animation (see DIC’s version of G.I. Joe) for Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters.

DIC show intros except for Ghostbusters:

The Ghostbusters DVD is great. Reitman and Ramis discuss on the commentary how originally Ackroyd had the story set in the future over run with ghosts. Ackroyd and Belushi were just like today’s firemen going from job to job. I have read that there will not be another sequel, but I would like to see that original concept have a go. Too bad Columbia could not re-release the movie for the twentieth anniversary coming up. The only thing that would have to touched up is the Terror Dogs, since they are really clay looking. The rest of the effects are fine.

The gum must not have aged too well, because I don’t remember green syrup. Man, I used to friggin’ EAT that stuff. It was damn tasty, too!

I vaguely remember learning about Slimer from cartoons, candy, etc. before I actually saw the first Ghostbusters movie. My Dad insisted that although this was the movie Slimer came from, he was barely in it and didn’t have anything to do with the story. I wasn’t yet at the point where I’d doubt my parents’ knowledge, but I was sure he was just kidding. Of course he was right after all. Damn reality.

i totally had that slimer action figure. only his head portion survives to this day, but it’s still floating around somewhere.

Is there anything kids won’t eat? I never used to be able to get enough of those damn gummy candies, but not the bears or worms–it had to be the scary scorpions and spiders and sharks, because those are cool, and the package was a mold that you could make yourself believe was reusable for ice or chocolate or something. Mostly, it just broke, and the delicious slimy candy made me nauseous after about 2. So I’d eat 24. Good times.

Dammit Matt, now I want some Ecto-Cooler.

I used to own a Slimer party balloon that I hung on my wall when it deflated. My mom had me throw it out.

Did anybody else have nightmares of Slimer eating you whole?

I was a Ghostbusters fanatic. Had the Power Pack, the Trap, all of it.

And I can still say, in all honesty, that Slimer Gum is the most disgusting "snack" I’ve ever had the displeasure of seeing.

Matt, you have my eternal admiration. I nearly puked at the sight of it…you actually put it in your mouth. Im amazed.

Ghosted by Voodoo Ben @ 03/12/2003 11:45 PM EST

You ate the Nads… you ate the Slimer gum. I’m amazed you didn’t have a go at the bubble gum HiC or the decade old chef boyardee pasta.

You are a braver soul than I.

*blargh*

I too want some Ecto-Cooler. Does anyone know what the flavor was exactly, and do they still make this flavor under a new name?

Ghosted by mindsuckr @ 03/13/2003 12:57 PM EST

Well, after some web research I have solved our problems.

Order of it’s names- Ecto Cooler, Citrus cooler, Shoutin’ Orange Tanger-whatever..

I know that my first task tomorrow is to track down a few cases of this stuff.

Also, has anyone else out there besides me been inspired by Matt to buy some Hulk Hands? They are mega fun!

"Ghostbusters tastes great, with milk and juice and toast/A [something] breakfast with the ghost!". Damn you, just when I thought the majority of 80’s TV jingles were purged from my brain.

I had the Apple Ghostbusters game. Totally rocked. I hated that Slimer like I hated Scrappy-Doo.

You’d have to eat a lot of Froot Loops to make your shit look as green as that!

Ghosted by Blah... @ 03/13/2003 11:04 AM EST

i still can (and do) find and purchase ecto cooler.

Ghosted by dick @ 03/13/2003 11:27 AM EST

My God, Matt! That was a pretty big wave of nostalgia- not that your articles don’t usually supply the stuff, but I was as big into the Ghostbusters as most kids were into G.I. Joe. The gum (yeah, it did look nasty), the Ectocooler- elements of my childhood that I took for granted and hardly made note of until you pointed it out.

Once again, dead on the money description, too- I loved Slimer. I can’t really explain why, except that he’s kind of "so-ugly-he’s-cute". And he made messes all the time. I don’t know, kind of like Scooby Doo, except Slimer’s a green, goofy specter of death, and he isn’t linked to a show that inexplicably, invariably embarrases me when I think about it O_O

You know, we never got a really good Ghostbusters video game. I mean a REALLY good one. I’m all for a third-person, completely-3D Ghostbusters game, a survival horror/survival horror spoof.

Yeah, I have no clue why I felt compelled to post that.

Ghosted by Night_Trekker @ 03/13/2003 11:52 AM EST

I never really enjoyed Ghostbusters. I chalk this up to the fact that I was three or four when the cartoon was on, and it gave me nightmares. I guess you have to be a real pansy to get nightmares from cartoon Ghostbusters. But I did, and I’ve never quite forgiven Slimer for it. Slimer is the scapegoat, in my mind. It’s his fault.

Toei Flexing Ultimate Muscle Sequel in the US
Wednesday, March 12, 2003 10:42 CST

Variety says that Japan’s biggest animation studio, Toei Animation, is creating a sequel to its popular Ultimate Muscle series, called "Kinnikuman" in Japan, for exclusive release in the U.S.

The 26-episode wrestling series will be less violent to comply with U.S. audience preferences, says the trade. This is the first time Toei has produced animation for an overseas market only, rather than selling a domestic hit abroad.

The series started as a comic book in 1982. Toei’s TV series hit the air the following year and lasted 137 episodes until 1986. In 2001, the next generation of Ultimate Muscle hit Japan and was picked up by 4Kids Entertainment for the U.S.

I liked Extreme Ghostbusters… but yeah, the original? Slimer? You bet your 80’s-born-ass.

Ghosted by Otaku Queen @ 03/13/2003 2:28 PM EST

Matt, what about the otrher Slimer toy from the 80’s that dripped Slime? Also, I too would like a new Ghostbusters game.

Ghosted by Nemesis @ 03/13/2003 2:57 PM EST

hmmm, this is off topic, but i just wanted to say that im 18 and have NEVER had a birthday party in my life :( guess im not as cool as matt :D btw, you were such an adorable little kid! liked the flashback :)

Oh yeah, the Ghostbusters Firehouse toy? That thing was massive. When I got it, it was as big as me. I could almost fit inside. Hours and hour of fun…By the way, Matt, you deserve a jumbo pizza for eating that stuff. Your dedication and willingness to eat things is admirable. I would suggest seeing a dentist about that cavity or you will regret it…

I remember Ghostbusters like it was yesterday. Had to be one of my biggest binges of corporate America fed TV. Ghostbusters, Ninja Turtles, Swamp Thing, and Nintendo. That about sums up me from being born to age 10. God I love this site.

I LOVED GBs when I was little! I remember me and my neighbor playing in the driveway drowning them in the mud puddles pretending it was protoplasm. I had this black ball cap with a plastic like cover and the GB symbole on it. I wore it for so may years until one day my dad cut the bill off for a costume! And the blue GB lunch box? I used that until I was in 6th grade and mom my tossed it! Parents ruin everything! Oh to have my hat and lunch pail for a brief moment.

JJuett,

The show you are thinking of is Filmation’s Ghostbusters. Filmation actually had a live-action Ghostbusters show before the moive was made in the seventies.

I remember really enjoying the Slimer gum. But I would have enjoyed cyanide if it had a Ghostbusters logo on it.

Ecto Cooler wasn’t just about the Ghostbusters product placement. I was the one kid in class who wasn’t obsessed with Ghostbusters. I liked it, but I was more interested in making sacrifices to my Beetlejuice shrine.

Ecto Cooler, though, was my favorite thing in the world. I drank as much of it as I could get my hands on, and that’s probably why I’m hypoglycemic (can’t eat sugar) now. I’m convinced it was worth it. I still get overwhelming cravings for it on a pretty regular basis.

The full title of what may be the modern version of Ecto Cooler is, according to the Hi-C site, "Shoutin’ Orange Tangergreen." With a name like that, it’d have to be Ecto Cooler. I’ll punish my pancreas with a box or five as soon as I possibly can.
