It’s a ‘classic’ because white academics hag-ridden by PC concerns have elected it to the canon as such, not because of any intrinsic literary merit…the book is as much hash as her so-called poetry is; in fact, I can detect little difference between her ‘poetry’ and ‘prose’ apart from the fact that the former is scansioned to conform’alledgedly, with some kind of metrical line (which I’ll admit I’m too possibly tin-eared to have ever been able to detect), while the latter is just an unstructured outpouring of diabetic treacle, lashed with heavy helpings of race-conciousness and sentimentality laid on with an equally heavy–and phony–hand.

Maya Angelou must be one of the worst poets to ever achieve such a level of notoriety. Her preachy poems and catalogs of random, empowering-sounding words are worthless.

She’ll be doing a reading in my area on Feb. 28, 2004. I usually don’t like plans that far in advance, but I know where I won’t be that night.
